IWTV Musings - matador!Lestat as Killer/Bruce (Pt∞): Incest, Pedos, & SA
This post is in direct response to the VERY good point @aleelewisharlot made about Claudia:
But I'm also making this part of my ongoing discussion about how Claudia (and AMC) has constantly equated matador!Lestat to Bruce. (x x x x x x x x)
Talk about it! That tension is 100% there, yes, and it's deliberate, cuz it goes all the way back to Anne Rice, and the deeply embedded incestuous undertones/parallels in Lestat's story vs IRL cases; on top of how book!Claudia was constantly sexualized (esp. by Louis). But what's important is that AMC flips it so that the tension is b/t Lestat & Claudia, by emphasizing that AMC!Louis is a firmly GAY man who has zero sexual interest in females--but "non-discriminating" Lestat does....
This is a effing LIE, and Les being nasty just to spite & hurt her, cuz Claudia IMMEDIATELY clocked that Antoinette's just as flat-no-nothing-arsed & non-curvy as "built-like-a-bird" Claudia is. Les may prefer a fuller figure on his MEN (*cough* Louis got that booty), but NOT on his women, and it shows. 😂🤣
I’m assuming all this information is from Claudia’s diaries and not from Louis but Louis is shown to be altering Claudia’s story in the name of “protecting her”. There is an interning read if Louis is also a little responsible for this threat and tension between Lestat and Claudia, if he is adding or creating more than there originally was. Then it begs the question, why is Louis presenting Lestat and Claudia’s relationship in this way? Why does he depict Lestat like that?
(The pages Lou removed were specifically about Claudia's SA, and the ones Loumand/Armand removed were specifically about Armand "my name is in some of those pages." So that had nothing to do with Lestat.) The thing about stories is that there's 3 sides: Person A's pov, Person B's pov, and then the truth is somewhere in the middle. Everyone's quick to dismiss IWTV as a total fabrication--even book!/film!Lou hated the interview & felt he'd "failed again;" and AMC!Lou set Daniel's laptop on fire cuz he felt Armand's mindf***ery has compromised his memoir too much. But Daniel disagreed & published the book anyway, cuz the whole point isn't really about the truth about NOLA; it's about the ODYSSEY of recollection--the twists & turns. YES, Louis' opinion/memories of Lestat & Claudia are compromised. But he DOES get the jist of things--that's Armand's M.O., cuz lies mixed with truths are the most convincing.
Cuz book!Lestat IS a canonical rapist (TotBT) pedo (IWTV) incestuous (TVL) genocidal (QotD) basket case, just like Hannah Moscovich said. So book!film!AMC!Louis doesn't NEED to exaggerate/lie/paint Lestat any particular way, cuz Les confirms it himself in several books. Even book!Lestat himself admitted that despite details Louis got wrong or left stuff out or lied about, Louis still accurately "captured the atmosphere & told the truth about their eerie contentment" together.
And book!Lestat NEVER denied anything Louis said about Claudia--he even AGREES with Louis, and he castigates himself about how he treated her for the rest of TVC, cuz he KNEW he treated her like trash & that she didn't deserve him taking his anger at Louis out on her.
Claudia & Lestat
Lestat's relationship with his fledglings are very atypical, cuz the Old World covens act more like CULTS, not like FAMILIES. The Children of Darkness called book!Les a "blasphemer, profaner, outlaw." And they were scandalized that he'd turned his own mother Gabrielle into a vamp, cuz of the implications. The sexual aspect of vampirism is up & down TVC. If you wanna make someone a vamp, it's cuz you love/are in love with them--or you're at least sexually attracted to their beauty (which goes all the way back to Akasha's Great Laws); and the bite/blood is the closest approximation to sexual intimacy.
Vampirism is inherently sexual--the bite itself is sexual penetration (vamp teeth are their reproductive organs). A Maker is both a parent AND a spouse; the Fledgling is both a child AND a lover.
Ames, Melissa. "Vamping up Sex: Audience, Age, & Portrayals of Sexuality in Vampire Narratives." Journal of Dracula Studies 12, no. 1 (2010): 5.
Claudia, Les' 4th fledgling, was the first time he changed his pattern of behavior (his mom Gabrielle, his first love Nicki (RIP), & his endgame Louis). But ironically, Claudia being a child isn't what was weird about Les Turning her. The Children of Darkness were up in arms against it, but Lestat himself admitted that her being a child--"a beautiful little girl"--was what fascinated him MOST about her!
Lestans never talk about it, but Lestat is ALSO a pedophile--AR doesn't make Lestat any different from Marius, David, Louis, or any other grown man lusting after underaged boys & girls up & down her books--ESPECIALLY cuz underdeveloped flat-chested girls resemble androgynous/"beautiful" boys. (As groundbreaking as AR was for queer literature in the 70s-2000s, her books are still riddled with homophobic stigmas.)
The film/show blessedly skip this part of the Murder Plot, cuz it's gross AF, but when book!Les drinks from the twins it's WILD--he's slobbering over how beautiful the little boys are, licks their nipples, and as he drinks the blood he's humping the kid as they both moan & rock back & forth, it's unhinged, but SO free-love!1960/70s istg.
The ONLY difference in Les' vs Lou's pov of the Murder Plot's that Claudia had stabbed Les over & over again after she slit his throat, which Lou never mentioned--not that details like that really matter; he's bleeding out in the swamp & set on fire regardless. 😅
But the BIG thing that breaks Lestat's pattern of behavior Turning Claudia is that she was a stranger he didn't want ("Madeleine, this stranger"). He didn't know Claudia--he made her specifically for Louis.
Sure, the 1x4 revisit in 2x7 shows more of that convo, but aside from the BS about the Great Laws (which I'm convinced was scripted AF cuz Lestat DGAF about no rules), it doesn't DENY the validity of 1x4--we still see Lou beg Les, Les say no, Lou crying, etc. The desperate atmosphere is still there, even if Lou's version never mentioned how he was on his knees sobbing please 1000x & dragging her unconscious body. Both versions emphasize that Lestat said NO. He did NOT want her around--but "anything for Louis."
Granted, book!Les didn't know book!Lou either--I always say book!film!Loustat was Vegas Married, cuz they didn't have the long romantic courtship AMC gave them. But Lestat always picks fledglings he himself has a romantic/emotional bond with--even Antoine(tte) was his sidepiece. (This pattern is broken again in Blackwood Farm when Lestat Turns Mona Mayfair for Quinn Blackwood--another underaged girl with a whole mountain of non/dubcon attached to her story as well.)
Claudia's relationship with Lestat is complex, cuz they're intimately connected to each other through the Maker/Fledgling bond; the same way Lestat is connected to Louis, Gabrielle, & Nicki. But it's loaded with resentment on both sides--AMC's version nods to how Lestat (felt that he) WAS forced to Turn her--by circumstance in the books, and more overtly by Louis on the show. The situation's the same regardless: Turn Claudia, or lose Louis.
Not that book!AMC!Lestat didn't love Claudia greatly, and not that Claudia didn't know that at ONE time, Lestat DID love her--though it was obvs never as much as he loved Louis. But Claudia died thinking Lestat hated her, cuz of the way he TREATED her: like a doll, a child, an inconvenient nuisance, a threat, etc. She was never Lestat's companion, and he was never hers, despite how similar they were & how well they got along during the "Easy Times" before Louis got depressed & Charlie died. She was LOUIS' companion, and she CHOSE Louis over Lestat to be her escort in Europe. ("You didn't want me, you made me for Louis." "I was just a roof shingle that flew off of your house!")
Claudia deeply resented & hated Lestat, esp. in the books, where she was eternally 5 years old. book!Claudia wrote Lestat off when she slit his throat & dumped him in the swamp--her rage was then redirected at Louis, going all the way into Merrick, even though she knew the babytrapping was explicitly all Lestat's doing.
Claudia & Louis
book!Louis didn't want Les to Turn Claudia at all, cuz he knew it was effed up for a TODDLER to be one of them--bitten/penetrated, turned into a killer like them, ripped from her INNOCENCE. But book!Claudia was mad that Louis tried to kill her, and thought she was better off dead and hated that she was vampire as much as she did.
I don’t know something about she was his daughter, his sister, his cousin, his throw pillow
AMC!Louis is far more responsible for what happens to Claudia, cuz he uses her as collateral--he desperately wants Les to Turn her, cuz he wants a companion all to himself--a child to love, who loves him--since he feels that adulterous Lestat DGAF about him. She's still babytrapped (or worse: in 1x4 Les says she'll be Lou's "lap dog"--an accessory/support system/comfort-object just like Armand in 2x5 calling her Lou's "throw pillow").
Claudia is another Miss Lily (is another PAUL). AMC makes parallels, but folk constantly get the wires crossed making false equivalencies that Claudia = prostitute and pimp!Louis = rapist!Louis. Louis is a homosexual with NO sexual interest in either of these females, even though that's technically Claudia/Lily's purpose--("10 million dollars, that's my wh*re number!")--prostitutes = sexual gratification; and vampire Turning = spousal marriage (but also childbirth). The SIBLING aspect gets lost in the Parent/Child dynamics.
Sure, the sibling/parent/incestuous slants are there--however, AMC never makes anything of it the way the books do. Louis is SAFE. Even the prostitutes like pimp!Lou. book!/AMC!Claudia still sleeps in book!film!AMC!Lou's coffin ("Paul crawled up in my bed last night"), and they are constant companions after 1x5--Les has Antoinette, and Lou has Claudia. But unlike Les having copious sex with Antoinette in Algiers, Lou is NOT having sex with Claudia--or with ANYONE. That's the whole problem-Louis is SEXLESS in a hedonistic world.
Les even weaponized this against Lou during the Trial, as the reason/excuse/CRIME that villainized Lou in his whole sob story about Vampire Loneliness being "the single worst thing that a vampire can feel." Louis refuses to have sex anymore. First he's anorexic & his libido's too low; then he's depressed & empty-nesting & ignoring Lestat's considerable considerables; then he's a cripple after being Dropped from the sky & all his bones are shattered.
Claudia becomes HIS mother, nursing him back to health and teaching HIM how to walk and feed himself, and keeping the dangerous Lestat OUT of their house and away from HER child/fledgling. It's an added element that the book/film never had, which emphasizes how AMC!Louis is NOT meant to be seen as her sexual predator--and it's Claudia's diaries that confirm that he's Daddy Lou to her, and then he's her brother, and then he's "Louis de Pointe du Lac. Dead weight," and she finally finds Madeleine & stops using her diaries altogether ("diaries are friends of LAST RESORT" when she's LONELY, too--Louis is a USELESS companion for her). It's not Louis emphasizing that he wasn't a sexual threat to her, it's her own testimony.
And ironically, the strongest associations with sex that Claudia addresses are all related to LESTAT: Charlie, and Bruce.
Claudia & Bruce
"He takes her to Lover’s Lane where she first sees sex and has a sexual awaking which leads to her to kill her first boyfriend and would-be sexual partner.... When Louis and Lestst confront Claudia about her kills, Lestst hides in her bed/coffin. He doesn’t knock when she demands he does after she gets her own room.
Exactly. And then LES is the one who violates her diaries (her private parts/body of work--Lou specifically tells him "don't do that, it's private!"). And the part AMC just so happens for Les to read is the part where she says how much it hurts whenever she has sex cuz her hymen keeps growing back. 😬
Louis goes along with it, cuz he IS complicit, and he's dying to know what she's been hiding (but he refuses to read the other diaries). But LESTAT reads them all, and HE is the one who takes umbrage with her "ungratefulness," and then he immediately puts his hands on her when she talks back & stands up for herself.
Which DIRECTLY parallels her experience with Bruce--they bond over talking about their abusive European Makers, and how she loves books, and Bruce oversteps by telling her to read a book on Etiquette and immediately attacks her when she talks back & stands up for herself.
I've said over & over: Lestat (& Bruce) had zero respect for Claudia, or her intelligence, and weaponize book-reading against them (& Louis).
"Lestat gives her a necklace he knows she’ll never grow into.... Lestst mocks her and forced her to watch as his body burns. "
Which makes him being forced to watch as her body burns SUCH a nice touch. 👌 Karma's a b****!
"Lestat does threaten her on the train saying he would do worse to her than Bruce did."
Lestat mocks/weaponizes Claudia's trauma CONSTANTLY, even in Ep5, so it's not beyond the pale that he'd say wild ish about Bruce SAing her. And here's where we get to the nitty gritty. Cuz this is Claudia's diaries--not Lou misremembering or Armand's effery. The only 2 people who can confirm that the Train Scene happened are Les & Claudia--and she's DEAD now. Not that it matters what Les did or didn't say--she ran away, got on that train, and he forced her back.
Claudia realized that Loustat weren't angels who'd rescued her from the fire--she calls them "Hell Demons." Her diaries explicitly say she "died in a fire but came back by the blood magic of two demons...that same girl was being raised to kill like her demon parents did." She says immediately: "I have my own room now, which is good, 'cause Daddy Lou can be smotherin', just as Uncle Les can get crotchety."
But she also says "There ain't no doubt Daddy Lou is my favorite. But sometimes, Uncle Les and I have a lot in common." She hollers at Lestat for not knocking on her door and throws her brush at him to make HIM get out of her room--NOT Louis. She KNOWS from the get-go that there's TWO of them at fault for making her, but SHE points the finger/blame at LESTAT. Way before Ep5 went to hell, there's ALREADY static b/t her & Les, but it just EXPLODES in Ep5. And then we see exactly what she thinks about Lestat in 1x6.
The screen diabolically overlays Bruce's face while Loustat are having sex--or rather, while Lestat is having sex & Louis is disassociating.
So yes, there's all kinds of layers to how Claudia perceives Lestat, and how she relates Loustat to her own experiences.
She's 19 when Bruce SA's her, and Bruce KNOWS she's older than she looks ("Always had a fondness for older women!"), but she LOOKS like a 14y/o child ("How old are you, Claudia?" "104!").
Lestat KNOWS she's a vampire stroner than an actual child, but he ALSO says she's "built like a bird," and that the vampires out there would "shred you to strips" cuz she's TINY.
They don't CARE how vulnerable she is. They use their strength against her, and throw everything she hates most about herself back in her face.
And Armand & Santiago do even worse to her in S2, cuz the whole point is that she (& Louis) are constantly being disrespected, violated & sexually assaulted. Which is why the moment she finally chooses her companion, it's when she's rescuing MADELEINE, who's about to be gang-raped. She hates Lestat so much that she balks at Les' blood being used to Turn Madeleine, he's so beneath her.
People keep complaining about Claudia's SA arc, but I think Rolin planned it from the get-go, cuz he knew he wanted Claudeleine to have that in common. They're both victims of SA, and see e/o as equals cuz they both know what it's like to feel like powerless women in a patriarchal world where they're never safe. And they pay the ultimate price when they're burned alive together on that stage, their ashes STEPPED ON & used as lube by Santiago--the bottle-blonde knockoff obsessed with being the coven's next Lestat.

Unhashed Podcast - Ruben Grows His Hair Out
On this episode of the Unhashed Podcast, we talk AMC accepting bitcoin, infrastructure bill shenanigans, Ee-lawn Musque's take on mining energy mix, how ETFs might or might not track the BTC price, half a billion dollars in a DeFi hack, and then finish off with some movie reviews.
AMC Theaters will accept the cryptocurrency bitcoin for movie tickets and concessions in the U.S. by the end of 2021, according to CEO Adam Aron, who first made the announcement during an earnings call on Monday. The theater chain will also start accepting Apple Pay and Google Pay, but there are still plenty of important questions about AMC's bitcoin bet that haven't yet been answered. 'œI've had to learn more in the past six months about blockchain and cryptocurrency than I learned about it in the entire decade before that,' Aron told members of the conference call. 'œThis increased knowledge has given me the confidence to tell you all today that AMC is hereby formally announcing on this call that by year's end we will have the information technology systems in place to accept bitcoin,' Aron continued. Aron noted that all bitcoin purchases of movie tickets and concessions would need to happen online, leaving some question about whether customers would be able to change their purchases after they showed up to the theater.
A compromise crypto amendment between senators Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), and the U.S. Treasury failed to make it into the final version of the infrastructure bill. Today in the Senate, Senator Toomey introduced a process known as Unanimous Consent, which required zero objections to pass a motion. Although support for the compromise agreement was widespread, it failed on the objection of Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL), who objected with the request of including a $50 billion defense amendment to the bill. Then in a last-ditch effort Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) asked for Unanimous Consent on his own amendment, which would have stricken the crypto language from the bill altogether. However, Shelby objected for the same reasons. There had been optimism this morning when the bi-partisan group of senators, which had been promoting competing agreements over the past few days, that the '˜problematic' language from the original bill would be struck before a final vote. In particular, Senators Ron Wyden (D-OE), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), and Pat Toomey (R-PA), objected to vague language that would require any node or miner, as well as software developers, to be categorized as a '˜broker' and produce 1099s for crypto users. The compromise language would have exempted these entities to primarily focus on crypto exchanges, such as Coinbase. The failure comes on the back of widespread crypto industry rallying, including more than 40,000 calls reportedly made to Senators by the non-profit Fight for the future. With no more paths to alter the bill's language, the next step in the process is for the $1.2 trillion bill to be voted on in its entirety by the Senate, which could happen anytime. Given the bi-partisan nature of the bill, it is expected to pass. It must then be reconciled with a version produced by the 435 member House of Representatives before getting signed by President Biden and becoming law. Actual implementation of the law is expected in 2023.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company will likely start accepting bitcoin for vehicle purchases again. 'œIt looks like bitcoin is shifting a lot more toward renewables and a bunch of the heavy-duty coal plants that were being used...have been shut down, especially in China,' said Musk on Wednesday at The B-Word conference, an event hosted by the Crypto Council for Innovation. 'œI want to do a little more due diligence to confirm that the percentage of renewable energy usage is most likely at or above 50% and that there is a trend toward increasing that number. If so, Tesla will most likely resume accepting bitcoin,' he said. In May, Musk said on Twitter that the company would suspend vehicle purchases using bitcoin out of concern over the 'œrapidly increasing use of fossil fuels for bitcoin mining.' Since then, Beijing has cracked down on crypto, expelling the country's crypto miners, who have since begun to patriate elsewhere. New data from Cambridge University shows many miners are headed to the U.S., which is now the second-biggest destination for the world's bitcoin miners. The U.S. is home to some of the cheapest sources of power on the planet, which, more often than not, are renewable. Fred Thiel of Marathon Digital said most miners new to North America will be powered by renewables, or gas offset by renewable energy credits, and Compass CEO Whit Gibbs estimated that bitcoin mining in the U.S. is more than 50% powered by renewables. 'œLong-term, renewable energy will be the cheapest energy, but it doesn't just happen overnight,' Musk said. 'œBut as long as there is a conscious and determined, real effort by the mining community to move toward renewables, then obviously Tesla can support that.'
French regulators have approved asset manager Melanion Capital to begin offering a bitcoin-tied exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the European Union. Though this asset does not have full correlation to the price of the world's number one cryptocurrency, its wide international market and 90%+ correlation marks major progress for investors' ability to gain bitcoin exposure. The struggle to create a legal, regulator-approved Bitcoin ETF has been a major ongoing development for years now. An ETF is a type of derivative that has its own value set to correspond with the value of some outside tangible or intangible asset, such as gold bullion or the growth in stocks of a specific private firm. The mechanisms of keeping this valuation on target can be a challenge, with slight fluctuations from the actual value to be expected, but complicated systems of arbitrage exist for most ETFs so that the asset managers can respond to changes in the financial world with speed and precision.
Hackers allegedly breached blockchain-based platform Poly Network and extracted more than $600 million in cryptocurrencies on Tuesday, the company announced on Twitter, marking the biggest hack ever in the decentralized finance space that's heating up among investors. Crypto-exchange operators spoke out soon after the massive hack. Changpeng Zhao, the billionaire CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Binance said in tweets that the company, which serves as the primary operator of the blockchain on which binance coins are built, will coordinate with its security partners and 'œdo as much as [it] can' to help. Meanwhile, Jay Hao, the CEO of cryptocurrency exchange OKEx, said the company is "watching the flow of coins and will do [its] best to manage the situation." According to a series of tweets by Mudit Gupta, the contract with the funds on Ethereum was essentially controlled by a single key, so the "hack" may have been as simple as a custodian losing their key.

Steel prices have tripled. Now Bank of America is sounding the alarm The pandemic brought the American steel industry to its knees last spring, forcing manufacturers to shut down production as they struggled to survive the imploding economy. But as the recovery got underway, mills were slow to resume production, and that created a massive steel shortage. “This is going to be short-lived. It’s very appropriate to call this a bubble,” Bank of America analyst Timna Tanners told CNN Business, using the “b-word” that equity analysts from major banks typically avoid. After bottoming out around $460 last year, US benchmark hot-rolled coil steel prices are now sitting at around $1,500 a ton, a record high that is nearly triple the 20-year average. Steel stocks are on fire. US Steel (X), which crashed to a record low last March amid bankruptcy fears, has skyrocketed 200% in just 12 months. Nucor (NUE) has spiked 76% this year alone. While “scarcity and panic” are lifting steel prices and stocks today, Tanners predicted a painful reversal as supply catches up with what she described as unimpressive demand. “We expect this will correct — and often when it corrects, it over-corrects,” said Tanners, a two-decade veteran of the metals industry who authored a report last week headlined “Steel stocks in a bubble.” ‘A bit frothy’ Phil Gibbs, director of metals equity research at KeyBanc Capital Markets, agreed that steel prices are at unsustainable levels. “This would be like $170-a-barrel oil. At some point, people will say, ‘F this, I’m not going to drive, I will take the bus,'” Gibbs told CNN Business. “The correction will be very intense. It’s just a matter of when and how it happens.” Gibbs said he is “more confident the steel price is in a bubble,” rather than that steel stocks themselves are in a bubble. The steel bubble buzz is just the latest debate about the sustainability of booming pockets of the market in this era of rock-bottom interest rates. Bitcoin, ethereum, dogecoin and other cryptocurrencies are on fire. GameStop (GME), AMC (AMC) and their fellow Reddit-fueled stocks skyrocketed earlier this year. And blank-check companies, some backed by celebrities, are raising gobs of money. Even Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has acknowledged the risk of overspeculation. “You are seeing things in capital markets that are a bit frothy,” Powell said during last week’s press conference. “That’s a fact. I won’t say it has nothing to do with monetary policy, but also it has a tremendous amount to do with vaccination and reopening of the economy.” Yet another shortage as the economy reopens Steel is just the latest shortage to hit the US economy as it recovers from a pandemic that scrambled supply chains and set off sharp shifts in demand. Everything from computer chips and lumber to chlorine and tanker truck drivers are in short supply. Manufacturers, restaurants and other businesses are also desperate for workers. Meanwhile, the International Energy Agency warned this week that there isn’t enough copper, lithium and other raw earth minerals available to make global clean energy ambitions a reality. The world risks “running out of copper,” Bank of America strategists said in a recent note to clients. Much like lumber, the steel industry was caught off guard by the rapid recovery in demand that began last summer — especially in the auto industry. “All of a sudden people were buying lots of cars,” said Tanners, the Bank of America analyst. And it took time for America’s aging steel mills to resume the production they had sharply cut at the onset of the pandemic. Steel prices have tripled. Now Bank of America is sounding the alarm
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/steel-prices-have-tripled-now-bank-of-america-is-sounding-the-alarm/
Steel prices have tripled. Now Bank of America is sounding the alarm
The pandemic brought the American steel industry to its knees last spring, forcing manufacturers to shut down production as they struggled to survive the imploding economy. But as the recovery got underway, mills were slow to resume production, and that created a massive steel shortage.
“This is going to be short-lived. It’s very appropriate to call this a bubble,” Bank of America analyst Timna Tanners told Appradab Business, using the “b-word” that equity analysts from major banks typically avoid.
“We expect this will correct — and often when it corrects, it over-corrects,” said Tanners, a two-decade veteran of the metals industry who authored a report last week headlined “Steel stocks in a bubble.”
‘A bit frothy’
Phil Gibbs, director of metals equity research at KeyBanc Capital Markets, agreed that steel prices are at unsustainable levels.
“This would be like $170-a-barrel oil. At some point, people will say, ‘F this, I’m not going to drive, I will take the bus,'” Gibbs told Appradab Business. “The correction will be very intense. It’s just a matter of when and how it happens.”
Gibbs said he is “more confident the steel price is in a bubble,” rather than that steel stocks themselves are in a bubble.
I won’t say it has nothing to do with monetary policy, but also it has a tremendous amount to do with vaccination and reopening of the economy.”
Yet another shortage as the economy reopens
Steel is just the latest shortage to hit the US economy as it recovers from a pandemic that scrambled supply chains and set off sharp shifts in demand.
Steel inventories shrank rapidly and shipments were delayed, just as steel buyers began ordering more than usual.
‘Peak’ prices?
The good news, for steel buyers at least, is that analysts say all of the US steel production capacity that was idled during the pandemic has returned.
That’s why Tanners said she’s very confident the shortage will soon end, causing steel prices to collapse. History shows that steel stocks “tend to peak” a month or so before steel prices, Tanners wrote in her report.
She said US Steel in particular is vulnerable to a commodity downturn because it has the most amount of debt and the greatest need to spend to upgrade its plants.
But for now, steel stocks may continue to look attractive to investors because the industry is minting money at the moment. The North American flat steel sector is expected to generate record earnings in 2021, according to Citigroup.
“Current steel prices are peak (or close to it) … and will correct sharply lower at some point,” Citi analyst Alexander Hacking wrote in a note to clients Wednesday. “The current scenario presents investors with the classic peak earnings dilemma.”
Hacking warned though that steel stocks can’t escape a commodity downturn. “We can recall exactly zero examples where steel equities have gone up during 25%+ metal price corrections,” he wrote.
The fate of Trump’s tariffs
Of course, those predicting a steel downturn may be underestimating the strength of the global economic recovery. A longer lasting boom could lift steel demand enough to keep prices lofty. Another risk is whether tougher environmental regulations in China will limit steel supply there.
One big wildcard is the fate of the tariffs on most imported steel the Trump administration imposed in 2018 to boost the domestic industry.
If the Biden administration rolls back even just some of those tariffs, it would ease supply constraints and weigh on steel prices.
Tanners thinks that is likely to happen in the next 12 months.
“We are protecting an industry where there is scarcity and prices are almost triple historical averages,” she said.

CAROL + 2
March 22, 1966
Directed by Marc Breaux
Written by Nat Hiken and Charles Sherman
CAST
Carol Burnett (Herself) got her first big break on “The Paul Winchell Show” in 1955. A years later she was a regular on “The Garry Moore Show.” In 1959 she made her Broadway debut in Once Upon a Mattress, which she also appeared in on television three times. From 1960 to 1965 she did a number of TV specials, and often appeared with Julie Andrews. Her second Broadway musical was Fade Out – Fade In which ran for more than 270 performances. From 1967 to 1978 she hosted her own highly successful variety show, “The Carol Burnett Show.” Lucille Ball made several appearances on “The Carol Burnett Show.” Burnett guest starred in four episodes of “The Lucy Show” and three episodes of “Here’s Lucy,” subsequently playing a character named Carol Krausmeyer. After Lucille Ball’s passing, Burnett was hailed as the natural heir to Lucy’s title of ‘The Queen of TV Comedy.’
Lucille Ball (Herself) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon, which was not a success and was canceled after just 13 episodes.
Zero Mostel (Himself) was an actor, singer and comedian of stage and screen, best known for his portrayal of comic characters such as Tevye on stage in Fiddler on the Roof, Pseudolus on stage and on screen in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Max Bialystock in the original film version of The Producers. He won three Tony Awards for his Broadway appearances. His film debut was alongside Lucille Ball in 1943's Du Barry Was a Lady. He died in 1977 at age 62.
John Harlan (Announcer)
This is the second of a multi-year series of television variety specials starring Carol Burnett. The first special was aired in 1962, featuring Burnett and Julie Andrews “Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall.”
The special was sponsored by American Motors Corporation (AMC) which was formed in 1954 by the merger of Nash-Kelvinator and Hudson Motor Car. At the time, it was the largest corporate merger in US history. After periods of intermittent but unsustained success, the company was ultimately acquired by Chrysler and ceased operation in 1988. The first commercial in the hour-long program stars Sid Melton, who had appeared in three episodes of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.” Although the AMC commercials are not included on the DVD release, some of the kinescope prints still retain the filmed commercials. The DVD does include, however, Carol Burnett's intro to two of the commercials.
The inclusion of Lucille Ball was partly because CBS insisted on Burnett having an established co-star for the special, and also because Ball already had a contract with CBS for up to three specials (in addition to “The Lucy Show”) for the 1966-67 season, of which she would only produce one, “Lucy in London.”
The show was such a critical and ratings success that CBS rebroadcast it on January 15, 1967. It was released on DVD on May 17, 2016. In April 2016, MeTV broadcast the special for the first time in 50 years.
The original airing straddled TV's transition from black and white to color. While “Carol + 2” was shot and aired in color, kinescope prints exist in black and white as well. While “The Lucy Show” was shot in color from Fall 1963, it wasn't aired in color by CBS until fall 1965.
The day before this special aired, “Lucy, the Superwoman” (TLS S4;E26) was broadcast for the first time.
Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett first shared the small screen in 1960 on “The Gary Moore Show,” where Carol was a regular and Lucy a guest. In 1966 and 1967 Burnett guest-starred in two two-part episodes of “The Lucy Show.” Both appearances were as Carol Bradford, who was at first Lucy's Los Angeles roommate. In their second teaming the two attended flight attendant school together. In 1969 Burnett played herself on “Here's Lucy,” and in 1970 she played another Carol, Carol Krausemeyer, a fellow secretary competing in a beauty contest with Lucy. In return, Lucille Ball guest-starred on “The Carol Burnett Show” during one episode of each of her first four seasons.
Coincidentally, Lucy, Carol and Zero all played Broadway's Alvin (now Neil Simon) Theatre in new musicals: Carol in Once Upon a Mattress (1960), Lucy in Wildcat (1961), and Zero in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962). Lucy and Zero were on Broadway at the same time in 1961; she with Wildcat, he with Rhinoceros. Carol and Zero were on Broadway at the same time in 1964; she in Fade Out – Fade In, and he in Fiddler on the Roof. Burnett's understudy in Fade Out – Fade In was Mitzi Welch, who wrote music for “The Carol Burnett Show” and the song “You're My Reason” for this special.
“Carol + 2” is also available as a bonus feature on the Time Life box set “Carol Burnett’s Lost Episodes.” It is also available on a stand-alone DVD release by Time Life. Interestingly, Zero Mostel is not mentioned or pictured on the cover, which is subtitled “The Original Queens of Comedy.”
In the opening, Carol introduces Lucy and Zero, who laments that TV show chatter is so artificial.
Carol: “I would like to present a woman who has dazzled the world with her charm and talent, who has conquered every phase of show business, who is the first lady of television, and who wrote this introduction.”
After a commercial, Lucy comes out and starts to play “Swanee River” on the banjo, but is interrupted by Carol. A running gag throughout the special is Mostel or Lucy wanting to do a solo act, but being interrupted. Lucille Ball had a rudimentary knowledge of several musical instruments, but banjo was not one of them. She was miming to a pre-recorded track.
Two years later, she would once again mime playing the banjo, this time with her daughter Lucie and Wayne Newton on a 1968 episode of “Here's Lucy.”
In the first sketch, "10th Anniversary," Carol and Zero play a bitter couple named Florence and Fielding Kissel who suddenly find out their marriage license is invalid. Whatever Florence says to him, he says “Shut up!” Whatever Fielding says to her, she snaps “Drop dead!”
After discovering that they're single again, they find themselves madly attracted to one another, but when a second phone call says it was all a mistake, they revert to being miserable marrieds again.
During the sketch Mostel croons a bit of "You and the Night and the Music" by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz. The song debuted in the Broadway show Revenge with Music in 1934. He then launches into a bar of “The Night Was Made For Love” by Otto Harbach and Jerome Kern, written in 1931 for the Broadway musical The Cat and the Fiddle. Finally, Mostel sings a verse of “Some Enchanted Evening,” written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for their 1949 Broadway musical South Pacific.
After a commercial, the same characters return, but in a different mood. Florence is found gazing at her wedding photograph and sings the ballad “You're My Reason” by Mitzi Welch, while Fielding sleeps on the sofa. Welch composed all the special material for “The Carol Burnett Show.” At the end of the song Fielding wakes up and quietly says “Shut up” and she lovingly says “Drop dead” as the scene fades.
After a commercial break, Zero Mostel sits at a grand piano and starts ad libbing a song with the odd lyrics “Millard Fillmore is dead and nobody came to the funeral.” Carol interrupts him and the scene transitions to the next sketch.
In the sketch “Goodbye Baby,” Alice (Carol) is saying goodbye to her sister Rita (Lucy) at a bus stop. Rita is about to leave on a two-week vacation to Miami but Alice won't let her sister leave without first hearing her infant baby say goodbye to his aunt. Alice's insistence and Rita frustration about missing her bus brings out the hidden animosity between the two sisters.
Alice: (shouting) “Jack the Ripper! John Dillinger! Machine Gun Kelly!” Rita: “How did they get into this?” Alice: “Oh, they're just some of the others who were rejected by their aunts when they were eight months old.”
Lucy's Brooklyn accent starts off strong, but then quickly fades out completely.
Zero takes the stage and starts to sing “The Road to Mandalay”, a song by Oley Speaks based on the poem by Rudyard Kipling. It was made famous by Frank Sinatra in 1958. Instead, Lucy and Carol slyly convince him to sing “If I Were A Rich Man,” a song he introduced in the 1964 Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. Although Mostel had left the cast of the musical by this time, the original cast album was still very popular.
In the sketch "What's Wrong with My Brother," Miss Cleaver (Carol) confides to her psychiatrist (Zero), that her brother thinks he's a frog.
To Miss Cleaver’s chagrin, the psychiatrist seems more concerned about the symbolism behind her scratching her itchy nose, which causes her to go to great (comic) lengths to avoid doing so.
Once again, Lucy comes out and starts to play “Swanee River” on the banjo, but this time she is interrupted by Zero.
In the sketch “Bunny Club,” Carol plays Nellie, the wardrobe mistress at the Bunny Club. Zero plays Eddie, the club's bartender who Nellie is sweet on. After he abruptly leaves, she dejectedly sings a slow-tempo version of "Wait 'Till the Sun Shines Nellie" by Harry Von Tilzer and Andrew B. Sterling (1905).
For much of the song, Carol sings to her own reflection in a mirror. In the brief dialogue set-up, the word “Playboy” is never spoken, although clearly that is the inference.
Zero takes the stage alone in a spotlight to lush orchestral music and starts to sing in Italian. Naturally he is interrupted – this time by both Carol and Lucy.
In the final sketch, Carol and Lucy play Evelyn and Emily, cleaning ladies who work nights at a New York City Talent Agency. The pair vicariously live the lives of show business producers. The establishing shot of the front door tells us that it is the William Morris Talent Agency on the 34th floor of a skyscraper. The two charwomen are arguing over whether 'they' can afford Cary Grant for an upcoming picture.
Emily: “They expect to make this picture for three million. They're shooting in Panavision. They've got a six week shooting schedule. Two weeks on location in Utah. If they bring this picture in for a penny less than five million four then I know nothing about show business!”
Evelyn says they're trying to talk Warner Brothers into making Joan of Arc with Jayne Mansfield.
Emily: “Jayne Mansfield as Joan of Arc! Man, would she take long to burn!”
Evelyn wonders if Cary Grant could do the picture if they offered him a capital gains deal like Emily came up with for Marlon Brando in Mutiny on the Bounty.
Evelyn: “It's a lucky thing we work at night. If anyone here ever heard us talking about our big deals they'd drop a net on us and cart us away to the palace for peculiars.”
There is a photograph of Vivian Vance hanging on the wall of the office. Vance made her last regular appearance on “The Lucy Show” in April 1965 in order to spend more time at home on the East Coast, although she would return for two guest appearances in 1967 and 1968. Vance did no acting at all in 1966, only making two quiz show appearances as herself.
Emily: “Are you still going around with that doorman from the Paramount?” Evelyn: “Ralph and I are engaged.” Emily: “Oh, brother!” Evelyn: “I know you don't approve of him.” Emily: “It's not him, Evelyn. But you know how I feel about show business marriages. Just don't come crying to me when your careers clash.”
Both Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett were in show business marriages that failed: Lucy to musician Desi Arnaz and Carol to producer Joe Hamilton. The Hamiltons divorced in 1984 and the Arnazes in 1960. This show was also written in the days when cinemas like the Paramount had uniformed doormen to admit patrons.
The sketch ends with the two charwomen doing a rousing song and dance number called “Chutzpah!”
Carol ends the show by calling out Zero and Lucy for a bow. Lucy and Carol are dressed in bright pink, an indication that color television was trying to make an impression. After a brief spot recognizing sponsor AMC, the trio sing “Bye Bye.”
The DVD has a quick outtake of Carol saying goodnight to the studio audience asking them to watch when the show airs to “up the ratings.”

Everything I'm Going To Watch In October (Oh God We're All Already Irreparably Behind)
Hi best friend!
I thought doing this was really fun, and brought me closer to you - my core audience. It also helped me organize my TV life (whereas I actually referred to my own blog like an asshole in order to make sure I was watching everything I said I was. Because this is the brutal honesty hour, here is a quick recap of how I did with September:
American Horror Story: Cult - I've watched three of this so far! Boy golly does this season not know what it wants to be.
Top of the Lake: China Girl - I didn't start this yet in hopes my boyfriend would catch up and watch the first season. Yes, I know he never will, and I'm lying both to you and myself.
Broad City S4- Watched it alllll, because I'm just a relationship girl.
Better Things S2 - Jumping back into this was the best choice I made last month. Thank you employees of FX for pressuring me.
The Emmys - Yeah I wrote a whole blog about it, and i was MORE THAN HALF RIGHT.
Channel Zero: No End House - Actually fun and legit creepy (Scarier than AHS...all tea all shade)
The Good Place Season 2 - No biting.
Gaga: Five Foot Two - You guys I'm worried about Gaga.
Transparent: Season 4- Haven't started, don't @ me. God it's depressing to be a whole season behind on something in 24 hours.
KUWTK 20th Anniversary: KYLIE IS PREGNANT, KHLOE IS PREGNANT, WHAT A WORLD!!!!!
The Good Doctor - Haven't mustered the strength.
Law & Order - Did people not like this? LA + bong bong + 1989 + true crime + Dr. Daddy = good.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine - Yas queen.
Great News - Briggggaaaaa
Will and Grace - So similar to the original series it's eery. For you to decide if that's good or bad.
But now October has come! And with it the arrival of new network shows that I'm not going to watch, programming about ghosts that I'm not going to watch, and Keeping Up With The Kardashians!
Sunday, October 1st-
Ghosted (8:30pm on Fox) -
The title and promos for this show have made me as skeptical as Scully in a cornfield at midnight looking at chupacabra bite marks, but I owe it to Adam Scott and Craig Robinson to at least give it a try. Fox has shown they are able to provide worthwhile comedy (talkin bout chu Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and paranormal investigation seems like a sturdy enough basis for comedy.... Let's just say I'm willing to consider the extreme possibility that there is comedy in the unknown. Maybe the laughs are out there.
Keeping Up With The Kardashians (9:00pm on E!)
DID YOU NOT HEAR ME SAY KYLIE. IS. PREGNANT.
Monday, October 2nd - The Halcyon (10:00PM on Ovation)
I barely understand what Ovation is, but this is a British series about a fancy hotel in London during World War II starring fresh-faced youths and Olivia Williams created by a woman. I have bolded all my trigger words in the previous sentence. Even if this is bad, it will still be amazing. How do you suspect one watches Ovation?
Tuesday, October 3rd - The Mayor (9:30pm on ABC)
The Mayor is a half hour about a young rapper who semi-accidentally becomes the mayor of his hometown. I thought the promo for this was genuinely funny, and Brandon Micheal (not a typo) Hall was horribly delightful as Dory's ex on last year's Search Party (don't even get me STARTED on my love of Search Party). With a lovable lead, and the even more lovable Daveed Diggs producing, I'm hoping this show will be able to inject some much-needed optimism and levity into political comedy.
Wednesday, October 11th - Riverdale (8:00pm on CW)
If you are feeling any sort of judgement stirring over this entry it is only because you have NOT YET WATCHED RIVERDALE. Riverdale is Twin Peaks for teenagers, Riverdale is whip-smart dialogue and rock-hard abs, Riverdale is the best cast show on television. I'm not even kidding, this show has my very favorite casting work of any other show. Golden-boy, ginger-haired Archie's parents are Luke Perry and Molly Ringwald. Pretty boy from the wrong side of the tracks? His dad is Skeet Ulrich!!! It is just 100% pure enjoyable. Also did I mention the abs? Archie's abs are crazy.
Friday, October 13th -
Lore (Amazon)
This anthology series from Amazon is based on the podcast of the same name written and narrated by Aaron Mahnke. The podcast consists of creepy short stories that range from mass murderers, to why tunnels make people uneasy. Each episode is beautifully written and delightfully unnerving and if the series is able to capture even a little of the fairytale magic of the podcast it will definitely be worth a watch.
Mindhunter (Netflix)
If I could choose any career to have that is not my career, it would be FBI criminal profiler. Sadly, I recently googled how to have this job and you need do a lot of stuff I don't want to do first, and there are literally only like five of them in the FBI. Feels like a very similar skillset to casting though tbh. This is directed by David Fincher, it is about the BIRTH of serial killer profiling in the FBI, and it stars beautiful cinnamon roll Jonathan Groff. I have watched the trailer almost every day. I want it so bad. SO BAD.
Saturday, October 14th-
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency Season 2 (9:00pm on BBC America)
Feel what you will (and validly so) about Max Landis, the first season of this show was quirky, clever and funny without feeling overwrought or precious. It handled time travel with mastery, and boasted a host of charming performances. It also had a corgi. And a kitten. I wrote about the first season when I started this blog last year (if you are interested you can read those entries HERE, be warned it may not help you recap the show in any meaningful way). I plan to tackle season two as well, so mark your calendars and the place in your heart that you have carved out for me. Everything is connected.
Sunday, October 22nd -
The Walking Dead Season 8 (9:00pm on AMC)
I am locked too deeply in a hateful, but passionate embrace with The Walking Dead to stop watching now. Whether I can summon the force of spirit to write about this season remains to be seen. (If you would like to re-live the agony and ecstasy of season 7, you can read everything I wrote about it HERE)
Monday, October 23rd -
Scared Famous (9:00pm on VH1)
This is a VH1 reality program starring Tiffany "New York" Pollard, Alaska Thunderfuck and Eva the Diva. Need I say more? I needn't.
Friday, October 27th -
Stranger Things Season 2 (Netflix)
Doo doo doo doo doo do do do
As a disclaimer to my ‘why are you not watching’ section, I don’t watch most network dramas being a) I am tired, b) I try and expose myself to as many new shows as possible, c) I am tired. Besides I am already woefully behind on my September shows, and it’s ALREADY October (and I’m behind). I can’t add 22 more hours of TV into this mix. When will I have time to watch Scared Famous!
But before you ask-
Curb Your Enthusiasm - This show is obviously legendary and I enjoyed it in the past, but it also makes me deeply upset and gives me anxiety. I can’t deal with those vibes right now.
The Gifted - The promos for this show claim it is one of the best Marvel series. If it is truly as good as Legion or Jessica Jones you let me know and I will watch it.
Scandal - I loved this show deeply for many years, but ultimately had to consciously uncouple from it.
Mr Robot- I tried. I couldn’t
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend - I have no excuse for this beyond laziness.
Jane the Virgin - Same.
I don’t know about you but it feels really good and cleansing to confess all of my television sins to you. I hope it’s just as soul-purifying for all of you viewers at home as well. If you think I missed something let me know, and I will tell you more specifically why I’m not watching it. I will see you all back here soon to talk about DIRK GENTLY! You can catch up! First season only 8 eps!
