BOTD: Wrenthrush
Photo: Steven Easley
"A strange little understory bird, unmistakable if seen well. Plump and very short-tailed, like a small antpitta or wren. Mostly gray with olive back; most distinctive feature is orange crown. Sexes alike. Found in high-elevation forests from 1500m to treeline, often around bamboo, and always close to the ground. Listen for high, thin calls."

Day 13 for my challenge, a Wrenthrush requested by @zeledonia! Fun fact, it’s neither a wren or a thrush. Birds are great.
Feel free to suggest more birds!

August 22, 2016 - Wrenthrush or Zeledonia (Zeledonia coronata)
Requested by: @zeledonia
Found only in northern Costa Rica to west-central Panama, these birds have been classified in their own family, though more research may be needed to determine where they belong. They forage mostly on the ground in dense vegetation, searching for spiders, insects, and other arthropods. Weak fliers, they often leap from a perch to fly or glide downhill with rapid wingbeats and may be incapable of long sustained flight. Their nests are hollow spheres of mosses, built on the ground.
