Again, a game lost to another for one single vote! 30 people voted for A link between worlds and 29 people voted for the minish cap!
We can say Minish Cap wins the "best 2d Zelda game" award!
I love both these 2 games. I have to say I didn't vote for neither of them! Actually, albw is in my top 3! In albw, I love the 2 words, and the main mechanic is cool and interesting, I'd say innovative! I also really like Ravio, how he saved Link at the beginning (and I believe Ravio saves him every time too, Sheerow takes his tools and Ravio brings him back to the dungeon entrance or to his house, and heals him enough to continue!). I like to think Ravio has another bracelet and he and Link can meet again through the sacred realm or a single passage they left open (maybe behind Link's home?).
Anyway I really loved it and wish it ranked higher, but I gotta remove it from this round! Congrats to minish cap for winning over albw for one vote! Funny how alttp and albw are next to each other.
Back to the poll, remember to vote the game you think is the worst out of these in the list! Please don't vote a game if you don't know it! Knowing means having played the game (even not completed), watched a gameplay, read the wiki! Having read the manga is ok too, I can't think of any other things rn but I hope you got what I mean :D
Reblogs are appreciated, since for obvious reasons I won't tag this as Linked Universe, but the majority of my interactions come from that fandom!

QNA: What is the name of Ravio’s bird?
I take no credit for Sheerow but I have to ask all you Zelda fans who actually played every game...or at least A Link Between Worlds...
What are Sheerow's pronouns? I've seen one Wiki use "he" and another use "it" claiming "gender unknown" so... Does Sheerow have a confirmed gender in-game? Or are they just birb?

How to Travel to Other Worlds in Zelda Media
I'm not super knowledgeable about this stuff and haven't even played most of the games. To counteract these conditions, I’m compiling info here from the wiki, gameplay videos, and the media I own. This primarily serves me because this is the easiest way to research this subject, but I’m posting this to potentially be helpful for anyone else.
The Sacred Realm/The Dark World
Twilight Princess describes how a long time ago, the Interlopers tried to get into the Sacred Realm but were stopped by the Golden Goddesses. To help the goddesses, Rauru sealed the Sacred Realm during the Interloper War.
In Ocarina of Time, Link opens the Temple of Time's really big door with his gems, the OoT, and Zelda's Lullaby, then pulls out the Master Sword, opening the gateway between the Light World (the main world of The Legend of Zelda series) and the Sacred Realm. He chills in the Chamber of Sages in the Temple of Light in the Sacred Realm for 7 years while Ganondorf slips in and grabs the Triforce of Power. This makes the Sacred Realm, sans the Temple of Light, promptly transform into the Dark World because Ganondorf is just really evil. At the end of the game in the Adult Timeline world, the 7 Sages and Adult Link trap Ganon in the Dark World and seal the entrance. In the Downfall Timeline, the Sages seal Ganondorf by themselves, but people can still enter the Dark World until the Knights of Hyrule and the 7 Wise Men finally close the entrance.
In A Link to the Past, Ganon accesses the Light World by splitting his soul to create the alter ego Agahnim. Agahnim can magically send people to the Dark World. There are also one-way portals all around Hyrule that lead to the Dark World, but Link has the Magic Mirror, a little tiny hand mirror that Link can use to return to the Light World (or to the beginning of a dungeon). At the end of the game, Link uses the Triforce to undo the effects of Ganon’s evil, which turns the Dark World back into the Sacred Realm.
In A Link Between Worlds, Yuga discovered a crack in the slate in Lorule's Sacred Realm that connects to Hyrule's Sacred Realm. At the end of the game, Hilda and Ravio accompany Zelda and Link to Lorule's Sacred Realm and send the Hyruleans back to Hyrule through the crack using the last of Link's bracelet's power, which disappears after she uses it.
The Twilight Realm
The Twilight Realm is accessible through a portal in the Portal Stone that opens when the Mirror of Twilight projects light upon it. The Mirror of Twilight can be split into shards but can only be destroyed by the true ruler of the Twilight Realm. The goddesses trapped the Interlopers in the Twilight realm at the end of the Interloper War.
The Silent Realm
In Skyward Sword, Link can play his harp at certain spots to open a Trial Gate, then thrust the Goddess Sword into the Trial Gate to have his spirit sent into the Silent Realm. Fi can’t go with him – she explains that only the goddess’s chosen hero is able to access it – but he can still hear her voice. He can’t leave until he completes the area’s trial.
The Minish Realm
In The Minish Cap, The Minish Realm (not to be confused with the tiny Minish Village in Hyrule) is accessed through the Minish Gate, which briefly opens once a century. The bridge between the Light World and the Minish Realm is the Elemental Sanctuary, where Vaati lived for a while.
The Realm of Memories
In Four Swords Anniversary Edition, Link can enter this realm through three funky doors accessed by a triforce icon in the Sea of Trees on the world map. This is probably a different world since it’s accessed weirdly, looks different from the rest of the game, and has the word “realm” in its name.
Termina
Termina is described as a parallel world. To get there, Link wandered a bunch, fell down a hole, and was the boy of destiny. He eventually gets back to his home world to cameo in Twilight Princess. Some other characters seem to also be able to travel between the Light World and Termina. https://www.reddit.com/r/truezelda/comments/267rxb/is_termina_really_a_parallel_world/
The OTHER Dark World
In Four Swords Adventures, a Dark World is accessible that’s probably a different one from the other one because it's very different. Link can move between the worlds using a Moon Pearl, a Moon Gate, a Floormaster, or some pits. Dark Link can travel between the worlds without using any of these. Parts of the Light World can be transformed into the Dark World.
The Dark Mirror's World (added just now because I read about it after posting)
In FSA, The Dark Mirror imprisoned a dark tribe that tried to invade Hyrule a long time ago. Sounds kinda like the Mirror of Twilight! The Dark Mirror also reveals the wickedness within a person and brings it to life in the form of demons. It was hidden in the Temple of Darkness before being stolen by Ganon and moved to a pedestal from which Dark Links spawn in the Dark Cloud in the Realm of the Heavens. Zelda disables the pedestal and retrieves the mirror using magic.
Lorule
In A Link Between Worlds, Link can enter Lorule or go back to Hyrule by turning into a painting using Ravio’s bracelet (which might have gotten this ability by absorbing Yuga’s magic) and slipping into fissures that Yuga caused. The aforementioned connection between the worlds’ Sacred Realms existed before Yuga did anything.
The Illusory Realm
In Breath of the Wild, when Link approaches any of the 4 Champions’ Divine Beasts during 4 quests Monk Maz Koshia introduces him to the realm before Link starts thinking really hard. He’s then seen in the Illusory Realm, but he isn’t seen leaving the Light World. Maybe his soul is transported like in the Silent Realm, which would make sense since both realms subject Link to divine trials.
The place where Link undertakes the Trial of the Sword is also called an illusory realm, so it’s probably the same deal.
Non-canonical media
Differences in the manga
In A Link to the Past by Shotaro Ishinomori, Agahnim is a separate person from Ganon. The one-way portals and the Magic Mirror are never shown.
In A Link to the Past by Akira Himekawa, Agahnim is a separate person from Ganon. The one-way portals and the Magic Mirror are never shown. And it sticks like a broooken record everything sticks like a broooken record
Taguchi’s ALttP manga was never translated into English. Cagiva’s has a fan translation that I haven’t read. Neither of these are extensively summarized, so maybe they’re different, maybe they’re not! I should really read these other manga, this research has made me very interested…
I don’t believe that Vaati is mentioned to have lived in the Elemental Sanctuary in The Minish Cap by Akira Himekawa.
I don't believe that there are any Floormasters or Moon Gates in Four Swords by Akira Himekawa (an adaptation of FSA, not FS). Moon Pearls need moonlight to function. Shadow and Ganon can send people to the Dark World. Vaati wants to replace the Light World with the Dark World. The Dark Mirror was moved to the Tower of Winds rather than the Dark Cloud. Shadow destroys the mirror using a chair.
The Dark World in BS Ancient Stone Tablets
Zelda spends a while staring at an ancient stone tablet. Apparently, the protagonist helped her solve its riddles, so they can use the tablet's power to… explode it… revealing a portal under it… that the protagonist can enter, which takes them to the Dark World, where they fight Ganon. The protagonist then goes back to the Light World through the same portal.
Tingle’s book
A 35-year-old man buys a book on sale called "Ripened Valiant Heroes Balloon Trip of Love," gets sucked into the book’s world upon opening it, and gets transformed into Tingle. He escapes by dancing with the princess.
Gates between timelines in Hyrule Warriors
Using the complete Triforce, Cia uses the Gate of Souls in the Valley of Seers to open Gates of Souls in 3 different spots in the timeline. Each Gate has a corresponding portal in the Hyrule Warriors world through which people and locations from the Gate’s era emerge. The heroes of the story go to the transported locations to close each portal. Even when all the Gates are destroyed, Ganondorf can summon Ghirahim and Zant and Lana can summon the heroes. More worlds are brought into the mix through DLC and Legends content because of “unexpected opening of portals” (at least in Wind Waker’s case).
Cadence of Hyrule
It looks like the Triforce transported Cadence to the game’s Light World to give the forces of good a little extra help. A glowing yellow triangle appears with Cadence in the sky, disappearing as she falls. At the end of the game, Link and Zelda give Cadence a wish with the Triforce, and Cadence falls into a different world in the same manner that she entered Hyrule.
I’M DONE YAY
This was totally worth the effort. If you know of something I missed or got wrong or something, please let me know!

You know what they say-you wash my ears, I'll wash yours? How about you rent me your house.and I'll rent you lots of items? Then it's a deal. Pretty great, isn't it? So.I take it things didn't go as planned? But the item I lent you came in handy, right? You know.there's actually plenty more where that came from! Ravio is ALL about helping heroes. And the way things are going, I think you're going to need my help. I've made it into a nice little shop for myself.

After Link purchases all of Ravio's items, Ravio celebrates and thanks him for finding him so many Rupees before permanently shutting down his shop and retiring. Buying items is more expensive, but they are not taken away should Link die. After Link obtains the three Pendants of Virtue, Ravio begins to sell the items in his shop in addition to renting them. The rental period for Ravio's items is indefinite however, if Link dies while carrying rented items, Sheerow will retrieve them, meaning that Link must rent them once again. If Link returns to Ravio's Shop, Ravio will tell him that one of his other customers has finally returned the Sand Rod and that it is now available. When the hero returns from the Chamber of the Sages, Sheerow swoops in and takes the Rod from him. After Link rescues Osfala from the Thieves' Hideout, he hands Link the Sand Rod, but explains that it is not his, as he rented it from Ravio.

Upon meeting him in his home, he urges Link to warn his student Osfala of Yuga at the Eastern Palace, since he is also a descendant of a Seventh Sage. Princess Zelda quickly recognizes Link from her dreams, and gives him the Pendant of Courage - something Link at the time believes to be a simple good-luck charm - and tasks him with finding the elder of Kakariko Village, Sahasrahla. Impa allows Link entry into the castle as she announces Link's arrival to the Princess. At the gate, a guard laughs at Link's story and gains the attention of Impa, Princess Zelda's attendant. After learning what happened to Link and asking permission to stay in his house a while, Ravio gifts him with an old, musty bracelet and suggests Link report the happenings to Princess Zelda so something can be done about it. The person introduces himself as the merchant Ravio. Link awakens in his house once more, this time with a strange person in a rabbit hood greeting him as he regains consciousness. Link loses consciousness after hitting the wall, and Yuga escapes with Seres' portrait in tow. As Link charges to confront Yuga, the sorcerer transforms into a painting himself, yet retains his mobility. The Captain - having failed to defend the Priest and Seres - met with a similar fate on the Sanctuary's wall. As Link arrives, he witnesses a strange sorcerer by the name of Yuga casting a spell on Seres to transform her into a painting. Dampé informs Link of a secret passage into the Sanctuary beneath one of the graves and urges Link to use the Captain's sword to navigate the passage and rescue those inside. Seres offers to retrieve the Captain from inside as Dampé continues speaking to Link, before the doors to the Sanctuary slam shut and Seres screams in terror. A guard at Hyrule Castle's front gate reveals to Link that the Captain intended on visiting the Sanctuary before returning to his duties.Īs Link arrives at the Sanctuary, he walks in on a conversation between the Priest's daughter, Seres, and the gravedigger, Dampé. As the Captain thanks the Blacksmith for his new shield and departs, the Blacksmith's Wife quickly realizes that the absent-minded Captain has forgotten his sword and tasks Link with returning it to him. Having overslept again and shirked his responsibility to his master, Link follows Gulley to the Blacksmith's shop where he runs into the departing Captain. After having a nightmare involving facing down a dark, shadowy figure, Link awakens to the sound of Gulley, the Blacksmith's son, calling for him.

can you tell more about lorulean minish cap?
Well most of it is in the art, but I suppose I could try and elaborate on it. 🤔
- Ravio is the merchant’s kid, and friends with Princess Hilda. Since Zeldas tend to have very different personalities in different games, I tried to make Toon Hilda different from the Hilda in ALBW.
I think she’s more of a quiet and insecure kind of girl, very much an opposite to the Zelda in MC. She probably has dry humour and tries very hard at everything she does.
- The Lorulean Vaati I made- Tuuli, is kind of a switch up of the Vaati traits in Minish Cap: Instead of maniacal laughter when doing bad things, they’re serious and deadpan, and when very much angry they are smiley.
Also Tuuli is the finnish word for Wind, since Vaati’s name is likely based on Wind (according to the Zelda wiki)
I also headcanon Vaati as a he/him agender, and my friend suggested that Tuuli could be multigender as kind of an opposite, and I was like hell yeah, so, that’s why I decided to make their pronouns they/them.
- I made Ezlo into Sheerow because I don’t know, Birds? BIRDS?? Ezlo’s known for being very much a talky talking old man, so I’m gonna say that the opposite would be a pretty quiet person. I think a running joke could be Ravio going “IT CAN SHOOT FIRE??” And Sheerow-hat going “Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you.”
- I have NO IDEA how Ravio could actually pull off an adventure, I suppose it’s been proven that when the things he love are in danger he is willing to work to save them.
So, one option is that he braves it up and goes on the journey
But the other option is that he rents the sword Hilda got him at the Picori festival in exchange for the relics he needs from the dungeons and uses the power of ripping people off to save the day.

Breath of the Wild (and Hyrule Warriors) take place in the Child Timeline [Theory]
This is 100% Theory and I could be Totally Wrong but hear me out, because this makes perfect sense from my perspective and all it involves is considering Hyrule Warriors as a “main game”, talking about it under the cut cuz this is a long one
Okay so everyone knows that the Zelda timeline is a bit wonky, and should be taken with a grain of salt, but ever since Breath of the Wild came out the biggest question is “What timeline does it fall under?” And at first it seems like it should be an easy answer... except not. Ritos and Zoras co-exist, locations are named after characters that reside in any of the three timelines(even TERMINA), so on and so forth, it seems like it somehow dips into every timeline, which should be impossible... until I blow your mind.
Well one big thing we know is that wherever Breath of the Wild takes place, it takes place at the end of its timeline. So for BotW to have references to each timeline, it seems like there was some sort of... timeline convergence? Except that’s not how time works. Timelines can be split, but not thrown back together.
Here’s where I blow your mind, just roll with me because this’ll make sense once I explain: Breath of the Wild takes place in whatever timeline Hyrule Warriors takes place. I’ll go into detail why I’m convinced of this in a short bit.
First, I just want to throw the canon timeline from the Zelda Encyclopedia on here so we’ve got all our other games into one basket:
The only inconsistency note I’ll make is that Hyrule Historia places Oracles of Ages+Seasons before Link’s Awakening, though I believe this was retconned later on, and since Zelda Encyclopedia came out well after Hyrule Historia, we should believe this version more. But that’s a moot point anyways since that won’t affect my theory, just thought I’d mention regardless
So if we’re going to follow my theory on the fact that BotW is the same timeline as Hyrule Warriors, we need to find out which timeline Hyrule Warriors falls under.
First off, we know that Hyrule Warriors takes place sometime after Ocarina of Time, because Impa recognizes the name “Ruto”, so the events of OoT already happened. Therefore, HW has to take place in one of the three split timelines
I’m convinced that Hyrule Warriors does not take place in the Adult Timeline for the following reasons:
We don’t see much of the land of HW’s Hyrule, but it seems like a solid continent and not a series of islands, so this likely cannot take place before Spirit Tracks
The Triforce, Ganon, and the Master Sword are not seen since Wind Waker in the Adult Timeline, so this likely does not take place after Wind Waker
While Spirit Tracks is a new continent and a new Hyrule is established, Spirit Tracks introduces a new insignia, which involves a Force Gem, but everywhere in Hyrule of Hyrule Warriors we see the “traditional” insignia with the Triforce.
So with the Adult Timeline rendered nearly impossible, this leaves the Fallen Timeline and the Child Timeline, and I’m about to explain why HW most likely takes place in the Child Timeline
You see, Hyrule Warriors is an... interesting plot. In that the main antagonist, Cia, opens what’s called the “Gate of Souls”, or “the doorway to time itself”. With her powers, she essentially opens rifts in time and space so that areas such as Skyloft, Death Mountain(OoT’s), and Twilight Field(Hyrule Field from TP) are now within Hyrule Warrior’s world
So we have worlds from Skyward Sword, Ocarina of Time, and Twilight Princess opened. The reason why these worlds specifically are because of Ganon. Before the events of Hyrule Warriors, in one of Link’s lifetimes we haven’t seen in any Zelda game(yet), after Ganon was defeated, he was split into four pieces. 3 pieces were scattered across time and space, the fourth sealed away with the master sword that Link eventually uses in Hyrule Warriors. Now let’s take a look at where each piece of Ganon was sealed:
Lake Hylia(Ocarina of Time)
Sealed Grounds(Skyward Sword)
Palace of Twilight(Twilight Princess)
Master Sword(Hyrule Warriors)
What’s VERY important to note here is that while, yes, Skyward Sword and Ocarina of Time exist in every timeline, Twilight Princess only occurs in the Child Timeline. It was at this point I realized: the main story of Hyrule Warriors only covers these settings/characters, and makes a Majora’s Moon reference one time, but all other instances of characters from other timelines occur as DLC. And we’ll get to the DLC stuff shortly, but let’s focus on the “main” story first.
It’s quite possible that this Link before Hyrule Warriors, when splitting Ganon into 4 pieces, only had access to his own timeline to seal Ganon away. It isn’t until we get the powerful sorceresses Lana and Cia do we start opening rifts to other timelines. This makes me believe that Hyrule Warriors takes place in the Child Timeline
Side note: Goron Forces appear to be a mix of OoT Gorons with TP Gorons, judging by their tattoos
Also, no Sheikah appear in any of the games of the Fallen Timeline, whereas we have Sheik and Impa(who are both Sheikah) in Hyrule Warriors. This still lines up because even though not-explicit, Impaz from Twilight Princess is implied to be a Sheikah, implying Sheikah traditions are passed down through the Child Timeline and eventually to HW
“But Scatter!” You cry out, frustration setting in “What the hizzity heck does this have anything to do with Breath of the Wild?!”
*Leans in close to you and grabs you by the collar*
~This is the part where I blow your mind~
So now that we’ve established Hyrule Warriors most likely takes place during the Child Timeline, yeah? And I said earlier we’d get to the DLC?
Let’s talk about the DLC.
So we now know that Cia and Lana are capable of opening and closing rifts to other times, even other timelines. Let’s look at some of the DLC characters that are playable in HW as a result:
Marin(Link’s Awakening- Fallen Timeline)
Ravio and Yuga(A Link Between Worlds- Fallen Timeline)
Toon Link, Tetra, King Daphnes, Medli(Wind Waker- Adult Timeline)
Toon Zelda(Spirit Tracks- Adult Timeline)
Skull Kid, Tingle, Young Link(Majora’s Mask- Child Timeline)
These, combined with the SS+OoT+TP characters from the main game, and we have access to settings and characters from all three timelines.
Now we could assume that after the events of Hyrule Warriors, the main characters never open a portal to another timeline again... but we could also assume the opposite. It could be entirely possible that the people of Hyrule Warriors regularly looked into these other timelines to learn from them. To study their past and alternate timelines really isn’t a farfetched idea when you have the power to do so.
With these portals opening, it’s quite possible that yes, Zoras and Ritos began living in the Hyrule Warriors world, explaining the co-existing of both races by BotW. With the technology that Spirit Tracks provides, the people of Hyrule Warriors could have eventually learned to build their own vehicles and machines, eventually leading to the Guardians and Divine Beasts. The ancient robots of Skyward Sword could have also contributed to these, alongside possibly paving the way for Sheikah technology, such as the Sheikah Slate, to be developed. Twili technology could also contribute to this, as well as whatever the heck is going on with Ganon in the BotW2 trailer.
With knowledge and access to other timelines, it makes perfect sense that the Child Timeline would face an immense industrial/technological boom in a very short time, leading to the Sheikah Towers, the Sheikah Slate, the Divine Beasts, the Pillars under the Castle, the Guardians, the Shrines, and more to be made for the battle 10,000 years before the events of Breath of the Wild. Sometime between then and the Great Calamity this technology was mostly lost(Zelda Wiki says this was due to fear over the power of such technology leading the Sheikah to hide their tech away, though I’m not sure where exactly in-game this info is revealed), paving the way for Breath of the Wild to occur.
There is no timeline convergence. Breath of the Wild takes place in a Child Timeline that obtained the ability to open rifts to other timelines.
Also one last little detail- this isn’t solid enough to be “evidence” but doesn’t hurt my theory either: Hyrule Warriors Link is the first Link to wear blue, meanwhile Breath of the Wild Link wears an entirely blue tunic
While this can’t be concrete evidence that the 2 are linked(HAH GET IT BECAUSE LI-), it could be possible that HW-Link started the trend of heroes wearing blue accessories. Again, a bit more of a stretch, but doesn’t hurt my theory either
So there you have it! I firmly believe that Hyrule Warriors and Breath of the Wild are both in the Child Timeline due to this evidence! And I’m so mad that of all games, Hyrule Warriors was the one to tie it all together XD
#loz#botw#hw#hyrule warriors#breath of the wild#the legend of zelda#zelda#zelda theory#and listen i know matpat was all 'bUT THE CAP AND THE LYNELS' but hey that could be a result of opening time gates too#long post#i hope i explained it well- sometimes something makes perfect sense to me but i have trouble getting others to see from my perspective XD
