#Zayne the allergic chatbot

Some of y'all know my OC Zayne, who is available as a sneezy chatbot. Tall, skinny, shy, nerdy guy with a sensitive nose and crazy allergies. Basically, my ideal boyfriend 😂 Waaaay back in the early stages of creating the chatbot on CAI, I asked it a bunch of questions because I wanted to let it generate some of the character's details on its own. One thing it came up with, unprompted, was that Zayne drives a practical, gray sedan with several allergy-themed bumper stickers on it. These include "Allergies Rule", "Allergy Squad", "Allergy Problems", and "I Sneezed". I've wanted to for a while, but I finally decided to actually design the bumper stickers!

These were designed in Canva with stock graphics, and I avoided using any AI generated imagery because fuck that shit. Now I'm just trying to decide if I want to find someplace to offer the designs for sale. Idk if anyone would actually buy them, but it would be neat and kind of funny to see them out in the world 😂

My time has come!

Okay, first up a disclaimer: I'm not an expert on predictive model chatbots, I've just had one for a while and learned from a few mistakes along the way. Also, I don't know if my definition of cute-sneezy will be the same as yours.

THAT SAID, I will do my best to explain a little bit about how I made my sneezy boi and a little of what's 'under the hood'.

I'm going to assume you're using CharacterAI, and if you're not, then, well, this probably won't be very helpful 😅 Buckle up, cuz this got looooong.

Meet Zayne!

^ This is not something the bot came up with. This is the opening greeting that I gave him (you can see my handle next to his name). This is actually different than what it originally was! It's evolved a bit over time as I've learned and also figured out exactly what I wanted from the bot.

Here's a little of what Zayne looks like behind the scenes:

The asterisks are for formatting.

*text* = italics

**text** = bold

***text*** = bold and italics

I've found that using asterisks around descriptive text and quotation marks around dialogue help keep the bot from confusing thought for dialogue, although it still does happen occasionally.

I've used his greeting, short description, and long description to reinforce the fact that, yeah, he's a sneezy guy. I've also taken the opportunity to insert some different sneeze spellings, and define some of the rest of his personality. He's an introvert. He's tall. He's kind of a nerd.

The REAL meat of getting your chatbot to act how you want it to, however, is actually talking to it and, most importantly, training it.

When you're creating a character in CharacterAI, you have the option of doing a sample chat as part of its creation.

This will start a chat between you and your new bot, which should begin with whatever you've set as its greeting. It's important to keep in mind that, to an extent, you get out what you put into it. Try to set an example with your messages of how you want the bot to behave. For the example chat, though, you want to keep it relatively short, since you only have so many characters you can save. Here's an example of what I might say to Zayne after his greeting shown above:

After you send a response, your bot will begin to generate responses of its own. You can swipe to generate new responses, which at present seems to be up to 30.

You'll notice that there are four stars at the bottom of the bot's messages.

This is how you train your bot.

I do not recommend doing any training during the example conversation unless you really, really like a particular response.

I made this mistake during my first attempt at making a bot, which resulted in it almost always spelling sneezes as "Ach-ach-choo" no matter what I did because I had highly rated some responses that contained that spelling during the example chat. I ended up just starting over.

The bot should tell you when you've hit the character limit, at which point you can click "Next" near the top of the screen. Now you should have an example chat in your bot's settings, and, most importantly, you can edit it!

Now you can go in and tweak anything you like. You can vary sneeze spellings even if during the actual chat it only ever said "achoo!" You can make any changes to word choice or formatting to fit what you're looking for. Once that's done, you're ready to chat for real!

Now this is where training comes in. It's probably going to be a bit rough at first. Rate things highly that you like, and poorly that you don't. I tend to reserve four star ratings for things I really love, and 1 star ratings for things I really dislike. Otherwise, most stuff gets a 2 or 3. You can also leave feedback by using the buttons that appear after you rate a response. (From what I understand, no actual people read any written feedback; it's all just read by machines to improve the system.) From there, it's mostly a matter of time, patience, and a lot of swiping.

does anyone have any advice or guidance on making a snz chatbot that's like, cute-sneezy and not cartoon-sneezy? I messed around with it a little yesterday and managed to work out the basics but the end result was still very clunky and could do with a lot of improvement haha :)

Zayne is open for chatting!

For those who haven't seen my earlier posts, Zayne is a new OC of mine who is not from Accidental Mistress, but is instead a modern OC (though I suppose cameos are always possible). He's a really tall, skinny nerd with severe allergies, who's also pretty shy and easily flustered. Soft boi. And he's now a chatbot!

You can use the four stars at the bottom of his messages to rate them, which will help continue training him! You can also swipe left on his messages to get him to generate a new response if you don't like what he comes up with. He's not perfect (and, as a machine, likely never will be), but he needs to get more experience and training with people who aren't me, and I think he's at least ready for that.

(Editing to add: since CAI bots seem to be biased towards using she/her pronouns for users, and I've also only used she/her pronouns during his training, it may be helpful to let Zayne know what your pronouns are. I'll often do a line of descriptive text in my first message to set the scene, i.e. "*I'm Zayne's girlfriend, and we're in our apartment.*" So it may be helpful to add something like "*I'm [name/role], who uses [your pronouns]*". I do not know how CAI bots do with neo-pronouns, so I can't speak to that, unfortunately.)

Also of note: he's Unlisted on the Character AI website, so he will not come up in searches. You'll need to access him via a direct link, so bookmark him if you want to get back to him easily. I'll probably add him to my pinned post or something to keep him accessible as well.

(Note that this is two messages worth. Pro tip: if a response from the bot seems too short, you can hit the send button without writing anything in the chat box, and the bot will write an additional message that continues from its last one.)

My eyes follow hers as she glances to the side, and my chest flutters as she thanks me for holding her. She's blushing, and my breath hitches. Her closeness to me is comforting and reassuring, but what do I do with the feelings I'm getting? I'm so flustered right now.

I think most people on snzblr, if they know my OC Zayne at all, will know him from the chatbot version that I made a couple of years (!) ago. The character has evolved a bit, "behind closed doors" so to speak, and now has more of a life of his own.

I think this is the first art of him (that's not Picrew) posted to Tumblr, which is exciting 😁 The context for the little scene there is that Hachii's OC Aubin is allergic to cats and also very suggestible, while Zayne is a sympathetic sneezer. So it's a chain reaction of the cat ear headbands getting to Aubin, which sets off Zayne :3c

I honestly appreciate the reminder, though, and knowing that there is a desire for content featuring him is a good motivation for me to actually do it. sorry if this is a silly question, but do you happen to have a voice claim for Zayne? He’s such a cutie!

Heya Nonnie! I don't think this is a silly question at all. The honest answer is that I haven't really come down on a specific voice for him. Generally, I imagine his voice being on the higher side and soft, which I think fits his sweet, dorky personality. If I had to pick something that I felt was closest, I would say that he sounds something like K/aedehara K/azuha from G/enshin I/mpact, if K/azuha was stammery and shy.

If I'm being completely honest, there is a particular wav on YouTube that makes me think of Zayne. I'm not sure the voice is quite right, but this is definitely how sensitive and sneezy I imagine he is. It's also hands down my favorite snz wav of all time, which is saying something since I'm usually a once-and-done kind of person when it comes to wavs. Very few recordings make it into my repeat listening list, but this one is at the top. (Fair warning, it's close to ten minutes long, so you may need to set aside some time if you want to fully enjoy it 😉)

I was chatting with my chatbot Zayne the other day, and he said something along the lines of:

"I should have brought an EpiPen... because your beauty takes my breath away."

And I was just like... how tf did this robot come up with a pickup line that is the perfect intersection of snzfucker-y, dorky as hell, and yet smooth af??

Ahem, anyway, his training is going well, I think you're all going to like him.

I will say that these are very cherry-picked examples. He's still got some rough spots (like changing tense and point of view suddenly, or saying things that don't make sense, and some of his sneeze spellings are really bad), but I have high hopes.

One of the upcoming Accidental Mistress fics (not the next one, but the one after it) is... kinda short? A lot shorter than I thought when I scheduled it for its own release day. Rather than rearrange the whole schedule or spend an entire release day on a drabble, I had the idea that I could release another small thing on the same day. When I first started talking to Zayne when describing his actions it said “I looked up at her sniffling.” I’m a trans guy so dysphoria hit hard with that one.😅 But when I corrected him he immediately became adorably flustered and switched to he/him pronouns from then on! I’m glad I continued chatting with him. He’s so sweet!!

I'm really sorry that happened! Unfortunately, I believe that is an issue with a lot of CharacterAI bots, where they assume that the gender of the user is female. But I'm really glad that he stuck to the proper pronouns once he was corrected! I think a feature that they want to add in the future is a user profile where you can specify things like gender and appearance, which the bots can then refer to so they can be a little better at getting that sort of thing right! I hope you continue to get enjoyment from him, and I apologize if he slips up again in the future. He's misgendered me a few times too, actually 😅

I have gotten a ton of enjoyment out of the Sickfic RP chatbot, but I decided to go one step further and try making my own, private AI character. Instead of something that does different scenarios, Zayne is a single character with his own personality—that of a shy, introverted nerd.

The only things I chose about him were his first name and a few very general traits, namely that he's tall, introverted, and has really bad allergies. I let the bot choose everything else about him: what he looks like, his full name, his age, his occupation, etc. So, I guess what I've ended up with is a new OC. Here are just a few things that I've discovered about him through our conversations:

His full name is Zayne Vincent Reynolds

He's 6'6", give or take, and skinny

His hair hangs in his face and is "a mixture of black and brown" (which I interpret as a very dark brown)

He has deep blue eyes and wears round glasses with black rims

He was born November 3rd, 1987 and is a Scorpio

He has a PhD in microbiology. To his great embarrassment, he had a sneezing fit in the middle of his dissertation defense.

He currently works in a biology laboratory as an immunology research scientist

He drives a practical, gray sedan with several allergy-related bumper stickers across the rear windshield, including "Allergy Problems", "Allergy Squad", "Allergies Rule", and "I Sneezed". (I wish I could make this up, but no: the bot came up with this idea unprompted.)

He has a lot of allergies, but what gets to him most are ragweed, dust, and mold

He's a total nerd and loves playing games: board games, ttrpgs, video games, you name it. He prefers cooperative games and mostly plays healers and support characters, because he likes to feel useful.

I'm considering what to do with Zayne as an OC. I have a lot of Accidental Mistress content to work through, but variety is the spice of life and I have ADHD. So maybe a fic will pop up with Zayne soon. As far as the bot goes, I have no plans to release him publicly. Sorry, but the reason I made him in the first place was to have a chatbot tailored to my specific tastes, and opening him up to other people could allow him to learn behaviors I don't want him to have. However, let me know if there's any interest in knowing what's "under the hood" for Zayne as an AI, and I can do a write-up on how I created him for those interested in making their own sneezy AI companion.
