American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules (2020)  - Review

CW: Teen Sexuality (As in that’s what this movie is about, if you were unaware.) 

Decided I wanted to do more movie reviews this year, so that means I have to watch more movies, anyway we’re starting with this one.

I am a big fan of the original American Pie series, so I am sorry that I compare all spin-offs/reboots to the classics and will continue to do so here today, however they happen to be one of the only reasons I even have a small desire to check out anything else in the franchise, so I tend to use them as my point of reference.

All that being said, I’m going to describe this new movie in a way that makes me want to roll my eyes, but unfortunately also happens to be the reason I wasn’t in love with the movie in general. “Girls’ Rules” is the feminist reboot of the first American Pie, where instead of making a pact to all “get laid,” they make a pact to find what they were missing out of their current relationships. On paper I’m here for all of that, it was just that in reality it didn’t win me over like I thought it might. Some things today try way too hard to be progressive in their endeavors to “empower” women, or in this case teenage girls, thus losing the innocence or rather the freshness of a story like this. (Yes I am the type of person to have heartwarming critical thought about “raunchy” young adult movies.)

Now I can speak forever and a day about the faults of the original movie(s), but one of the things I loved about it, was that in general it felt relatable. (Side Note: For clarification the first time I saw American Pie, I was far too young to understand a lot of it, that was until I got older and finally knew what the jokes were about. So when I talk about it being relateable, I really just mean that it felt like it could be more relateable in a wider and more grounded coming-of-age sense.) There was obvious immaturity and awkwardness that gave it some of that “innocence” and with this new version of that story a lot of that was lost on me. I wasn’t getting a ton of “this feels like the first time,” feelings, no pun intended. Every move seemed way more adult than I was expecting and the whole thing didn’t have that air of just regular growing up to it all. I’ve watched the Riverdales and the Euphorias of the current young adult media landscape, so I shouldn’t be surprised here, but for real some of it did make me hella uncomfortable with how easily some of these things just rolled off the tongue.

I think my biggest problem outside of being uncomfortable half the time, was that I wanted there to be some really nice coming-of-age transitional moments like at the end of the first movie, and I didn’t really get any, this go around. Or any that were sufficient enough for my tastes. There were parts of it where I wanted to clap for the girl-power and smile for the classic totally expected but still cute, inevitable match up, but even then I struggled to rally behind any of it as a whole. I’m down for making Stifler a girl and less of the walking definition of a sexual harassment lawsuit waiting to happen as well as telling girls that they can own their sexuality, I just don’t think this iteration of the American Pie legacy lives up to the heart of what I love about those first 3 to 4 slices.

PS: Were all the adults in this movie wildly too inappropriate or was it just me who was uncomfortable with some of their “openness?”

24: Legacy Season 1 Episode 1 "Pilot" Preview

The clock ticks once more as the acclaimed series 24 returns with the hit new FOX show, 24: Legacy. The series premiere introduces fans to a new hero, who takes up the mantle to stop a new threat to the United States. Here is the synopsis:

The clock ticks again with the next evolution of the Emmy Award-winning “24” with the new drama series 24: LEGACY. The series chronicles an adrenaline-fueled race against the clock to stop a devastating terrorist attack on United States soil – in the same real-time format that has propelled this genre-defining series. Starring Corey Hawkins (“Straight Outta Compton”), Miranda Otto (“Homeland”) and Jimmy Smits (“Sons of Anarchy”), 24: LEGACY reunites the original series’ award-winning producing team of Howard Gordon, Brian Grazer, Manny Coto and Evan Katz; director Stephen Hopkins; and “24” star Kiefer Sutherland, who all serve as executive producers.

The premiere is an action-packed one as it gets into the gruesome reality of the show's plot within seconds. While this reviewer is a long-time 24 fan and I will always miss hearing Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Bauer narrating the opening moments of the episode, the show doesn't lose any of the luster that the original series had with it's return. The new cast of characters are intriguing and kept me invested in the plot, especially the show's new badass hero, Eric Carter, (played by Corey Hawkins). Getting to see Jimmy Smits return to television is of course a welcome addition, and the show's plot is definitely a reflection of our society, as it pushes to understand both the advanced technology we use in our lives and the misconception about who is and who isn't a terrorist.

Overall, this was a fantastic episode! The show's plot is strong, and the characters will keep fans engaged with the series as it progresses. Filled with non-stop action, complex plots and a phenomenal cast, this pilot proves that 24: Legacy is a welcome addition to the franchise, and this coming season should have lots of incredible twists and turns. Be sure to check out the premiere of 24: Legacy this Sunday, February 5th, only on FOX!
