Fona herzogae Avrahami et al., 2024 (new genus and species)
Tumblr media
(Reconstructed skull of Fona herzogae, from Avrahami et al., 2024)
Meaning of name: Fona = Fo'na [ancestor of the CHamoru people in their oral history]; herzogae = for Lisa Herzog [discoverer of one of the localities where Fona specimens have been found]
Age: Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian), between about 99.17–99.52 million years ago
Where found: Cedar Mountain Formation, Utah, U.S.A.
How much is known: Remains of at least five individuals, including nearly complete skeletons.
Notes: Fona was a thescelosaurid, a group of relatively small (sheep-sized or smaller), bipedal ornithischians ("bird-hipped" dinosaurs). Thescelosaurids were traditionally thought to have been ornithopods (a group that includes the duck-billed hadrosaurids, among others), but several recent studies suggest that they were equally closely related to both ornithopods and marginocephalians (the group uniting the horned ceratopsians and dome-headed pachycephalosaurs).
Fona exhibits many potential adaptations for digging burrows, including enlarged attachment points for muscles on the shoulders and increased fusion among the hip vertebrae and pelvic bones. Some of these same features and direct evidence of preserved burrow structures have been reported for another thescelosaurid that lived at around the same time, the closely related Oryctodromeus of Montana and Idaho. If Fona also lived in burrows, being buried in them may explain why its fossils are so abundantly and completely preserved, considering that remains of small dinosaurs are otherwise uncommon at the sites where it has been found.
A range of minor anatomical differences can be observed among different individuals of Fona. Some of these differences might represent sexual dimorphism or features that changed during growth, but further research is needed to identify the most likely explanations for them.

Even after two centuries of research, paleontologists still know relatively little about certain expanses of time in the Age of Dinosaurs. The middle part of the Cretaceous, from about 83 million to 113 million years ago, is among them. Paleontologists have long wondered how the famous faunas of the end of the period—Cretaceous celebrities like Triceratops, Tyrannosaurus and Ankylosaurus—came to be, yet researchers have been thwarted by the scarcity of fossils in the preceding time periods. Now a new dinosaur from the 99-million-year-old rock of Utah is helping to fill in the fossiliferous gap. Named Iani smithi after the Roman god Ianus, said in mythology to oversee transitions, and paleontologist Joshua Aaron Smith, the newly discovered dinosaur is known from a partial skeleton that includes much of the skull as well as portions of the spine and limbs. In life, the beaked, plant-munching creature was about 12 feet from the tip of its snout to the end of its tail. And as North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences paleontologist Lindsay Zanno and colleagues described Wednesday in PLOS One, this dinosaur helps outline the changes that led up to the classic dinosaur communities of the Late Cretaceous.

An article published in the journal "Scientific Reports" offers new information on the sensory capabilities of the Thescelosaurus neglectus, a small dinosaur that lived just before the great extinction that wiped out non-avian dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period. Paleontologists David Button and Lindsay Zanno submitted a Thescelosaurus skull to a CT scan to reconstruct its interior to create a 3D representation of its brain and inner ear. The conclusion is that this species had some very developed senses, useful for living in burrows.

An early-diverging iguanodontian (Dinosauria: Rhabdodontomorpha) from the Late Cretaceous of North America
Lindsay E. Zanno ,Terry A. Gates, Haviv M. Avrahami, Ryan T. Tucker, Peter J. Makovicky
Abstract
Intensifying macrovertebrate reconnaissance together with refined age-dating of mid-Cretaceous assemblages in recent decades is producing a more nuanced understanding of the impact of the Cretaceous Thermal Maximum on terrestrial ecosystems.
Here we report discovery of a new early-diverging ornithopod, Iani smithi gen. et sp. nov., from the Cenomanian-age lower Mussentuchit Member, Cedar Mountain Formation of Utah, USA.
The single known specimen of this species (NCSM 29373) includes a well-preserved, disarticulated skull, partial axial column, and portions of the appendicular skeleton. Apomorphic traits are concentrated on the frontal, squamosal, braincase, and premaxilla, including the presence of three premaxillary teeth. Phylogenetic analyses using parsimony and Bayesian inference posit Iani as a North American rhabdodontomorph based on the presence of enlarged, spatulate teeth bearing up to 12 secondary ridges, maxillary teeth lacking a primary ridge, a laterally depressed maxillary process of the jugal, and a posttemporal foramen restricted to the squamosal, among other features.
Prior to this discovery, neornithischian paleobiodiversity in the Mussentuchit Member was based primarily on isolated teeth, with only the hadrosauroid Eolambia caroljonesa named from macrovertebrate remains. Documentation of a possible rhabdodontomorph in this assemblage, along with published reports of an as-of-yet undescribed thescelosaurid, and fragmentary remains of ankylosaurians and ceratopsians confirms a minimum of five, cohabiting neornithischian clades in earliest Late Cretaceous terrestrial ecosystems of North America.
Due to poor preservation and exploration of Turonian–Santonian assemblages, the timing of rhabdodontomorph extirpation in the Western Interior Basin is, as of yet, unclear. However, Iani documents survival of all three major clades of Early Cretaceous neornithischians (Thescelosauridae, Rhabdodontomorpha, and Ankylopollexia) into the dawn of the Late Cretaceous of North America.

3. 3 films you could watch for the rest of your life and not get bored of?
national treasure, the polar express, and EDIT I LIED changing to princess bride for sure. i have seen all of them a truly astonishing amount of times already and i haven't ever gotten tired of them. the entire spectrum of human emotions can be experienced via those three films.
25. fave season and why?
AUTUMN !!! GIVE IT UP FOR AUTUMN!!!!! she never misses. the beautiful crisp smell on the air. sleeping with my window open knowing it isn't going to get hotter soon and waking up with a pleasantly cold nose. sweaters and blankets and cool jackets and changing leaves and cider and pumpkin and cinnamon and applesauce and over the garden wall. spooky season. the decorations!! halloween. it gets dark at like six o'clock which is the most perfect time for things to get dark in my opinion. the most iconic month names. scary movies. george winston's autumn album and david huntsinger's autumn in new england. "autumn in new york" by ella fitzgerald and/or frank sinatra. harvest moons. have i made my point yet? it doesn't get ANY better than autumn.
27. any nicknames?
yeah sometimes people call me zan or zanno (the second i assume is when they don't know me as zanna just my user lol). growing up i was sunshine. my siblings and i had star trek nicknames but incomprehensible to anyone but us so i was tinkerbell. in sixth grade bible class i was "the professor". i don't really have any irl nicknames anymore other than people i

OU ANVI METE ZANNO POU PITIT FI OU A? Ebyen pran ti tan pou'w li epi wa pataje pou yon lòt paran aprann tou. Gen kèk paran ki vle pèse zòrèy pitit yo pandan ke li ti bebe a. Li kapab yon kesyon de estetik, men tou yon tradisyon. Se poko bon moman pou mete zanno pou li, paske li ka rache yo e li ka mennen a yon enfeksyon. Paran yo souvan poze kesyon sa (souvan alantou 5-6 mwa), donk nou rekòmande yo pou rete tann jiskaske timoun yo gen 18 mwa oswa menm 24 mwa. Se laj ki konvenab pou pèse. KI RISK KI GENYEN NAN PÉSE ZÒRÈY YON TI BEBE? - Si timoun nan twò piti, risk prensipal la se ke li ka manyen zanno a, ke li ka rachel, mete nan bouch li e ke sa enplike tou gen risk pou timoun nan vale zanno si li gentan rive nan laj kote li mete tout bagay nan bouch li. - Risk pou enfeksyon an prezan tou; si bijou an piti anpil, gen yon risk ki ba pou domaj, oswa li ka grate zòrèy li e blese. Anplis de sa, gen risk pou kontrakte ekzema si timoun nan alèji ak materyèl zanno a. Sa ka ankouraje yon dezyèm enfeksyon apre sa avèk yon stafilokòk oswa yon lòt bagay. KIJAN POU EVITE RISK YO • Timoun nan dwe fin resevwa premye dòz vaksen tetanòs la • Ou dwe mete zanno medikal yo paske yo lejè epi yo pa lakòz alèji e yo genyen nikèl sekirite ladan yo • Pa retire zanno yo nan zòrèy timoun nan pandan 2 premye mwa yo. Pou asirew ke twou zòrèy yo pa bouche • Pa itilize gwo zanno oswa zanno ki long, Pa sèvi ak yon zanno lò an premye paske sa ka lakòz alèjik, li ka vin wouj oswa li fè pij. Stone Ocean/Part 6 Michalis Zannos and Lost Treasure!!!
I don't draw them so often and I feel really bad, Michalis is one of my Part 5 characters who works for the Mafia(not Passione) and is the son of Stelios Zannos(Impostor Captain Tennille(Part 3).
I wanted to draw him in some clothes that I reblogged in my main account and experiment with backgrounds, I took inspiration from a poster of Stardust Crusaders/Part 3 with Jotaro Kujo.

Iani smithi Zanno et al., 2023 (new genus and species)
Tumblr media
(Reconstructed skull of Iani smithi, from Zanno et al., 2023)
Meaning of name: Iani = for Ianus [Roman deity of transitions]; smithi = for Joshua Aaron Smith [contributor to paleontological discoveries and conservation in Utah]
Age: Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian)
Where found: Cedar Mountain Formation, Utah, U.S.A.
How much is known: Partial skeleton of one individual, including parts of the limbs, much of the vertebral column, and a nearly complete skull. Some isolated teeth from the same rock unit probably also belong to this species.
Notes: Iani was an iguanodontian, a diverse group of plant-eating dinosaurs that includes the duck-billed hadrosaurids. It was only a distant relative to hadrosaurids though, and may have instead been more closely related to the rhabdodontids, a lineage of small- to medium-sized iguanodontians from Europe. If so, Iani would be the one of the few rhabdodontid-like iguanodontians known from North America, possibly along with the Early Cretaceous Tenontosaurus.
Iguanodontians from the Late Cretaceous of North America are mostly represented by hadrosaurids and their close relatives, and by the end of the Cretaceous they appear to have been the only iguanodontians left in the region. However, Iani demonstrates that other types of iguanodontians had not yet disappeared from North America at the beginning of the Late Cretaceous.
