New Beginnings: A Wild Violet One Shot

Happy Christmas Eve Everyone! I hope all who celebrate, and don’t celebrate, have a wonderful and safe day!

I decided to repost a fic that I originally posted last year on here to my fanfic sites, with some slight edits. The fic is entitled: New Beginnings: A Wild Violet One Shot. I’ve been super hesitant to post any writing, but I thought this would be a cute little piece for Christmas Eve.

This fic takes place shortly before Zach and Violet find out they are going to have Varina, so it’s a very bittersweet moment when Violet’s battling her own fears prior to telling Zach. Below you can find a summary, list of warnings, and the links to the story! Please feel free to comment/let me know what you think!

Summary

Zach Varmitech and his new bride Violet enjoy the beauty of the winter season in spite of a tragic loss and Violet’s persistent illness. Zach is determined to keep Violet cooped up and get her to a doctor immediately, but Violet knows that what’s really happening isn’t an illness at all: it’s a new beginning.

Warnings

Mentions of loss of child/stillbirth, mentions of pregnancy, morning sickness, light angst, one mild curse word, kissing/makeout session, and a few suggestive comments (but nothing explicit/nsfw).

“I don’t see why we couldn’t just buy cookies,” he muttered, arms crossed.

Zach Varmitech tapped his foot impatiently, watching the oven timer like it owed him something. The scent of chocolate chip cookies filled the sleek metallic kitchen of his high-tech lair. It felt out of place amidst the machinery and cold design, but that was your influence—bringing warmth to Zach’s otherwise robotic world.

You laughed softly, tying your apron behind your back. “Because homemade cookies are better, Zac. Plus, it’s fun.”

He wrinkled his nose, clearly unconvinced. “Fun? I could be working on my latest plan to outsmart those Kratt brothers, but no. I’m standing here... measuring flour.”

“Flour you spilled everywhere,” you teased, brushing some off the counter.

Zac huffed, crossing his arms tighter. “It wasn’t my fault! The stupid measuring cup slipped. And besides, it’s your job to clean up after me, right?”

Your raised eyebrow made him shrink slightly. He wasn’t serious, but he always loved testing your patience—like a child seeking attention. You shook your head, deciding not to feed into his antics.

“Okay, mister genius inventor,” you said, pulling the tray from the oven. “Let’s see if you can handle something as simple as decorating cookies.”

“I can handle anything,” he declared, puffing up his chest.

Yet, as you laid out the piping bags and sprinkles, Zac’s bravado faltered. His fingers fumbled with the bag of icing, squeezing too hard and splattering bright green frosting all over the cookie—and himself.

“Ugh! This is so stupid!” he growled, throwing the bag onto the counter.

“Hey, it’s not stupid,” you said gently, picking up the cookie he’d abandoned. “It’s about having fun. It doesn’t have to be perfect.”

Zac scoffed, turning away. “I don’t get why you care about this stuff anyway.” His voice softened, almost uncharacteristically. “It’s... dumb.”

You set down the cookie and moved closer, brushing a hand over his shoulder. “Zac, what’s really going on?”

He hesitated, biting his lip. For all his bravado, there were cracks in his armor. Finally, he mumbled, “My mom used to bake cookies... when I was little. She always got mad when I messed them up, though.”

Your heart ached at the vulnerability in his voice. “That’s why you’re so worried about messing up now?”

He shrugged, avoiding your gaze. “I don’t know. Maybe. It’s not like I think about her much. She was always busy with her own stuff.”

You cupped his face gently, forcing him to meet your eyes. “Zac, I’m not your mom. I don’t care if you mess up a hundred cookies. I’m just happy we’re doing this together.”

For a moment, Zac said nothing, his sharp features softening as he processed your words. Then, with a small, almost shy smile, he picked up the frosting bag again. “Fine. But don’t laugh if mine looks better than yours.”

“Deal,” you said with a grin.

The rest of the afternoon passed with laughter and more than a few frosting fights. By the end, the cookies were far from perfect, but Zac didn’t care. For once, he wasn’t trying to outsmart anyone or prove his genius. He was just enjoying the moment—with you.

And as you handed him a warm cookie fresh from the tray, he realized he didn’t need perfection. He just needed you.
