Publishing : Industry Research Current trends and marketing for Picture Books
Publishers of children’s books have a strongly international dimension in what they do. In order to cover the start-up costs of a picture book, for instance, they need to build in co-edition sales from the beginning. This involves having powerful subsidiary rights departments focusing on the international market and building up enough of a print run to make the project viable. It also means that children’s publishers need to be acutely aware of what will sell in particular countries and what sensitivities of subject-matter or vocabulary there might be.
The US and the UK look like the same English language market, but anyone who sells across the Atlantic, in whichever direction, will confirm that the superficial similarity conceals a mass of small differences of vocabulary and practice. The market itself has changed radically in recent years. British publishers used to expect to sell to the US, but now American publishers are more interested in originating their own books and selling to the rest of the world.
The European markets are very important for children's publishers. The Scandinavian countries are enthusiastic buyers-in of children’s books, Japan, India and Singapore can be great markets, and new markets such as China are rapidly growing in importance. The rights-sellers who deal with international rights need to know each market in detail to get the best deals for their books.
http://www.writersservices.com/resources/childrens-publishing-inside-publishing
Children’s Book Publishing in Asia
“The children’s book market is stable. Originals are getting stronger, even in the YA segment”
“Distribution of free stories through mobile phone has reached feverish pitch. So, here in Japan, books are competing against not only the usual rivals of video games and TV shows but also mobile phones.”
“While Japanese publishers continue to be keen to translate good picture books, it’s becoming quite difficult to make deals with European publishers, who prefer copublishing. Japanese publishers would rather avoid copublishing owing to its inflexible schedule and high reprint cost.”
-Solan Natsume, senior agent (children’s division) of Tokyo-based Tuttle-Mori Agency.
“For picture books, the best known of all is, of course, Taro Gomi, who is widely published by Chronicle Books and Kane/Miller. We also have Mitsumasa Anno, published by Philomel Books, and Komako Sakai, by Scholastic and also Chronicle Books.”
-Yurika Yoshida, President and CEO at the Japan Foreign-Rights Centre Yoshida and her team are set to promote over 100 titles from various publishers—new and established sellers—at Bologna 2009 next month. http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/childrens/childrens-book-news/article/10035-children-s-book-publishing-in-asia.html
Bologna 2016: Agents Talk Children's and YA Trends
“I see more and more writers and illustrators exploring different methods of sharing stories with the youngest readers. As an example, the graphic novel format in picture books and early readers has become more commonplace.
The Chinese market has been very aggressive—Japan and Korea as well. In Europe, I would say that Germany has been strong. And they have been looking at and buying in all age groups and in all genres, including nonfiction and picture books.”
-Marietta B. Zacker, Nancy Gallt Literary Agency
“When you’ve got 1520 meetings a day, you have to be able to describe a book quickly and memorably.”
-Kate Schafer Testerman, KT Literary
“Many editors are still asking for the smart, funny Klassen-esque story, as they were last year…I’m excited about the commitment to diversity and diverse voices. I do hope that this is a fundamental change, not a passing trend.”
-Fiona Kenshole, Transatlantic Agency
“It’s a good time for sequential storytellers and their readers—you have more choices, more variety of stories than ever before.”
-Catherine Drayton, InkWell Management
“We’re definitely seeing a huge upswing in licenses to China across all genres. There’s also very good demand for middle grade series, especially where there are at least two books published with more in the pipeline. Picture books are hot again, and we’re seeing foreign licenses from around the globe on a very regular basis.”
-Holly M. McGhee, Pippin Properties
http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/international/trade-shows/article/69644-bologna-2016-agents-talk-children-s-and-ya-trends.html
Booksellers: The association of New Zealand booksellers
“There’s a different sort of reality being sought now, too: diversity. While external worlds have been diverse for a while – picture books set in Parnell or London or on the moon – now it’s internal worlds’ turn. Book buyers and readers are asking for books with characters of colour, varied sexual and gender identities, and different (dis)abilities. They want children to see themselves in the books they read, to know that they are as worthy as being in literature as anyone.
Children’s books are the one area of publishing that is growing consistently each year. There have been countless international reports showing the growth of sales of books for children and teens, while other genres tread water.”
