My Love Story With Yamada-kun At Lv 999 Is A Romance You Should Definitely Watch (Anime Review)
If there’s a studio that can capture romance well, it’d be Madhouse. The way they animate romantic scenes in anime is immaculate. I absolutely loved My Love Story!! And how romance was animated in Cardcaptor Sakura and Bibliophile Princess (which I still need to finish). My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv. 999 is a prime example of well-animated romantic scenes and fluffy, colorful animation.
My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv. 999 is a shoujo romance story between gamers. 20-year-old college student Akane Kinoshita gets dumped by her boyfriend one day as he fell for another girl over the internet. In an attempt to get him back, she attends a game event, trips and meets a handsome guy named Akito Yamada who picks up her shoe. Akane learns three things about him: 1. He’s Afro Yamada from FOS, the game she plays and the focus of the event she is attending; 2. He’s a well-known gamer that her ex-boyfriend ignores her when he sees them together; 3. Yamada is an 18-year-old high school student. Does that stop Akane from falling for him? Nope. She falls for him because that is the point of the story!
I’ll address the elephant in the room first. I’ve seen people on social media berate the age difference between the two leads because one is a college student and the other is a high school student. 18 and 20 isn’t a big gap, contrary to Twitter’s belief. A two year age difference is nothing special. There are a lot of pairs with a two year age difference. There’s no difference in maturity levels as both characters are mature in their own ways. There is nothing problematic with this story or the characters. If you think a two-year age gap is weird, then maybe you’re the weird one…
In all honesty, I really like the premise of having gamers fall in love. In today’s society, gaming is the trend, so it was clever of the author to ride on that and to make a romance out of it. I think the way this story was written is actually crafted well from a writer’s perspective. Akane isn’t shown to be a nerdy gamer; she plays games casually and is fashionable and pretty. It shows that anyone can play games and it shows in Episode 3 where Akane meets up with her guild members that aren’t Yamada in real life. They range from a handsome bespectacled 19-year-old college student Eita who catfishes as the guild master Rurihime, his gremlin younger sister Runa who’s in middle school and strawberry farmer Takezo Kamota who’s much older than all of them. It shows that anyone of all ages can enjoy games and that there’s no shame in doing so.
Sure, there are conflicts every now and then like Akane not being over her boyfriend, Runa getting jealous and protective over her circle of friends that she had to trick Akane, and Yamada’s classmate Tsubaki having a crush on him, but they all get resolved efficiently and without the need to drag out time. I actually like that! Sometimes, shoujo and romance animes can be hard because some conflict drag out and ruins the flow (I’m looking at you, Kimi ni Todoke with your Kento/miscommunication plot point).
The characters are all nicely written for a romance anime. Akane is a twenty-year-old girl and a college student. While she is the older one in her relationship with Yamada, that doesn’t mean she’s mature. She has problems and issues that most young girls face like not getting over rejection, being overly trusting and overthinking. People would think, “Oh, you’re an adult, you have to start acting like one”. Adulthood isn’t all sunshine and rainbows as people might expect and Akane proves that. College students are dumb and a mess; I would know because I was dumb and a mess at that age. I also like the fact that she does have dating experience. Akane, in general, is a fun character and a good shoujo lead; I think wasted/drunk Akane is the most hilarious thing ever. I love that she has different outfits! They’re all so cute and a few look like something I’d wear casually!
Yamada is rather mature for a high school boy. However, as a gamer, he’s rather unrealistic because most gamers I’ve seen are loud, constantly online, and probably lacks a love interest. How often do you see a tall, handsome gamer who treats women well? How often do you meet such a gamer guy outside of gaming? Despite his rather unrealistic qualities, I do think that he and Akane match well because of their personality differences and just how kind and respectful they are to each other. Yamada is only awkward with romance and girls because he had hurt someone in the past and doesn’t want to step out of his boundaries to hurt anyone again. I guess my only gripe with Yamada would be that he’s voiced by Kouki Uchiyama who’s voiced dozens of characters similar to him so it’s to be expected that he’d voice this guy too (this is the fourth anime I’ve seen that has him in the cast; three of them are the same character with black hair and one is a marmot); it’s not a bad thing to be typecasted since it is a job for voice actors. I do like Uchiyama a lot! I just feel like it’s to be expected in a way?
I do like how Eita has the qualities to be the second lead, but he’s not. He’s mainly in the story to be supportive and help our main duo get together. He’s a long time friend of Akito’s. Eita’s probably my favorite character in this anime because of how entertaining he is. When his identity as Rurihime is revealed, he goes on and on about his relationship with Rurihime (he just likes playing as a female character in general) and doesn’t think him being a catfisher is weird. Yeah, you do you, Eita! I do like how he’s a good big brother to Runa; he scolds her when she does something bad, but he is generally caring and supportive of her. He’s also somewhat of a big brother to Akito since he’s a year older than him. Eita is a vital character in this story because he’s the reason why Akane is in the guild and why Akane and Yamada eventually got together.
Runa looked to be a romantic rival at first, but she’s just a lonely girl with no friends. She’s protective of Yamada and such because she doesn’t want change in her life and just wants things to be the same. Although the prank she played on Akane was bad and dangerous, she does get Akane’s forgiveness by becoming her friend, which Runa enjoys and appreciates. She’s a definitive younger sister character with her snark and sassiness. She’s also a very timid character as she gets nervous easily. I’m glad that she is someone that I got to warm up to in the anime and that she doesn’t continuously play pranks on Akane to kick her out of the guild. My only gripe with Runa is that her game avatar doesn’t appear once in the anime. What does it look like? I want to know!
Kamota is the last of the major Chocorabbit guild members (before Tsubaki’s arrival) and is the oldest. He’s such an adorable character. I think the fact that he’s an older character, thus has so many connection makes realistic sense. If you don’t know, being an older Asian person means you know practically everyone in your community; my parents are like this as they practically know a lot of people in the Korean community where I live. He was yelling at the creepy suit guy in Episode 5 (voiced by OnoD) and telling him that he has a lawyer friend was peak. He’s also hilarious in the FOS world where his character is a tiny fuzzball, but when in battle, he grows ten times bigger and becomes the OP-est member. It’s a waste to not see what his avatar’s powered up self looks like.
Of the side characters, I think Momo is my favorite because she’s so supportive of Akane. While she does envy Akane at times, it’s more of a friendly kind. She’s always supportive of her and is her biggest emotional support when things look bad for her. I do hope she gets the boyfriend of her dreams.
Okamoto and Tsubaki are Yamada’s friends from school. Tsubaki’s role is that she has a crush on him, but is also a gamer. She joins Chocorabbit a bit later in the anime and does get along with Akane. Okamoto is comic relief. I do want to see more of his friends, honestly. They do seem like good people for Yamada to hang out with them constantly.
The voice acting is pretty good since they get a good mix of well-known voice actors in the cast. Inori Minase and Kouki Uchiyama play the leads while Natsuki Hanae, Ai Kakuma and Nobuo Tobita are the supporting cast. That’s pretty solid all around. I think the two most standout voice actors are Ai Kakuma and Nobuto Tobita. Kakuma has two roles in the anime: Rurihime and Runa. The fact that she voices both characters differently shows off her talent. Rurihime has a cute tone befitting an avatar while Runa is soft-spoken with a lot of snark and grouch. Tobita’s voice as Takezo is really good. He voices him adorably but when things get dire, he changes his tone to a deeper one. I really liked the way he voiced his avatar character the most.
The music in the anime’s good. The music used in the romantic scenes is so soothing and brings out the vibe so well. The opening and ending songs are good too! You can’t go wrong with Kana-boon!
There’s nothing I particularly disliked about this anime, which is good! I totally recommend this anime to anyone wanting to watch romance animes. Heck, this has become one of my favorite romances now. I’m glad I was able to watch it and enjoy it! I think there should be more college-themed romances or even gimmicky ones like gamers falling in love. This is the last of the Spring 2023 animes I’ve watched, so I’m glad to finally be able to review this. What are your thoughts on this anime if you have seen it?

My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 (2023, Japan)
Director: Morio Asaka
Writer: Yasuhiro Nakanishi (based on the manga by Mashiro)
Mini-review:
This was cute! It was certainly predictable, but all the characters are likable and the show was clearly made by pros. In fact, it didn't surprise me at all when I realized Morio Asaka and Madhouse were behind this. They have made some of the best animes of all time and they clearly know how to make the most of their skills even for a relatively simple story. Anyway, I really liked the way the characters develop. I know some people might be uncomfortable with the age gap, but the show handles it gracefully and I wasn't bothered by it at all. I also loved how they incorporated games and gaming into the plot. I think I hadn't seen that in a romcom before, so it felt quite refreshing and helped make up for the predictability of the whole thing. That being said, the ending felt somewhat anticlimactic and sudden. It did make me look forward to future episodes, though, so maybe that was the goal. To sum up, I'd recommend this if you're looking for a solid, feel-good anime romcom.

My Review of My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999
Humor me. Who else thought this was going to be a sequel to Ore Monogatari (My Love Story) where Takeo and Yamada go all the way? I can’t be the only one with that sick thought. Okay completely unrelated anime, let’s see what you got.
Akane Kinoshita is out with her boyfriend Takuma…and she gets dumped. Yep, not even 30 seconds into the first episode and she gets dumped. He’s leaving Akane for a girl he met in an online game that he and Akane were playing together. After the breakup, Akane went on the game she got into because of her ex and went on a killing-spree of monsters. Just then, she meets another player named Yamada who looks like Saitama if he had a weird afro on. It takes him two minutes just for a simple reply. Akane gets annoyed and basically tells him off. After some time from the breakup, Akane decides to go to this on-site event for the game she was playing. Never mind getting freebies for the game, she’s going merely for the fact her ex might be there and wants to flaunt the goods to make him regret leaving her.
Things did not go according to plan. Akane trips and falls down on her way to stalk her ex. The person she bumped into is a handsome young man of few words. Akane realized that this mysterious boy is that Yamada she met in her game prior to this event. Well, Akane is face-to-face with her ex. What does she do? Lies and says Yamada is her boyfriend and even bribes him to keep up the farce. Yamada is quite aloof and can be blunt with the things he says…if he says anything. But what Akane doesn’t know is that Yamada is a pro-gamer.
While the boyfriend lie is merely for whenever Akane’s ex is around, Akane has a nice friendship with not only Yamada, but his inner circle as well.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: Even though this was a Crunchyroll exclusive (in association with Aniplex of America), this didn’t see a dub until a good six months after the series had started. Normally, I’d be concerned. But this did happen during the actor’s strike, so I’ll think no more on the matter. And that’s all I’ve got here. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
JAPANESE CAST: *Akane is played by Inori Minase (known for Rem on Re:Zero, Prushka on Made in Abyss, Makinohara on Bunny Girl Senpai, Ruruka on Danganronpa 3, and Hidomi on FLCL: Progressive)
*Yamada is played by Kouki Uchiyama (known for Soul on Soul Eater, Yurio on Yuri on Ice, Rui on Demon Slayer, Shigaraki on My Hero Academia, Ikuya on Free!, Ichijou on Nisekoi, and Yuuki on Shiki)
ENGLISH CAST: *Akane is played by Abby Trott (known for Nezuko on Demon Slayer, Shizuka on Zom 100, Machi on Hunter x Hunter, Veronica on Seven Deadly Sins, Inui on Aggretsuko, and Fou on Fate/Grand Order)
*Yamada is played by Stephen Fu (known for Weather Report on Jojo’s Pt. 6, Naofumi on Shield Hero [season 2+], Douma on Demon Slayer, Henry on Black Clover, Kaname on Darwin’s Game, and Pax on Mushoku Tensei)
DISLIKED CHARACTER: No, it’s not Runa. As much as I love to dunk on those little girls who latch onto the hot character and glare at the obvious main attraction, I actually hate jerky ex-boyfriends who quickly dump their girlfriends over trivial shit more. Yeah, Akane’s ex can kick rocks for all I care. While we only see him two times in the whole show, his breakup with Akane really messed her up.
SHIPPING: Yamada is oblivious when it comes to females. He didn’t even know a girl was confessing to him in the second episode. There’s no way in hell he’s going to fall for Akane. Never mind, dragging her drunk ass to his home in the first episode. As it turns out, Akane and Yamada had quite the cute friendship for the greater majority of this season. And as the series progressed, several of their friends were all for them getting together (even if the two characters aren’t going to do so). But we have to remember that Yamada is going to do what Yamada does. He can be blunt and slow to respond. Yet he somehow acts differently when it comes to Akane. The blunt and slow responses are still there, but he almost acts on a weird impulse at times with her.
Elsewhere, Yamada is quite the favorite around school and elsewhere. There are so many girls at his school that think he’s cute. And then there’s Runa! A lot of insecurities to unpack with this little one. But the fact that she at first wanted to keep Yamada all to herself and push Akane on some rando guy really speaks volumes. That action of Runa’s almost landed her on my dislike category. But I left her off because I grew to like her throughout the rest of the series. She even became a Akane x Yamada shipper. I thought it was adorable when she tried to have Akane bump into Yamada while eating a piece of toast.
But what about Yamada’s silent classmate, Yukari? And what of the girl from Yamada’s past that liked him? The girl from Yamada’s past is someone we’ll never see again. Yukari on the other hand…well, that’s a topic for the ending.
ENDING: Does Akane like Yamada for real? That’s a pretty big question for her as she kinda sees him in a new light after Yamada took care of her when she was sick. There is one big thing that seems to be holding her down and that’s the way things were left off between Akane and her ex. As most people do when they’re dumped, they go through a myriad of thoughts to narrow down what they did wrong. However, she still wants to tell Yamada how she feels. It’s just that the timing never seemed right with the two of them.
Meanwhile, let’s move onto Yamada’s silent classmate, Yukari. We see her a few episodes towards the end of the season. She’s on speaking terms with Yamada in class. And she recently joined the FOS guild that Akane, Eita, and Yamada are in. Her reasons for joining the video game guild were to of course get closer to Yamada. And in the second to last episode, Yukari let it slip out to Yamada that she likes him. Oooooh, right before Akane got the chance to. I sure hope the hint Eita dropped about Yamada about to get confessed to will make a dent. I think it did!
Yamada meets up with Yukari after the confession. Yukari spills everything out and admits how long she’s liked him and every reason in the world she likes him. And Yamada still rejects her! It wasn’t like those airhead replies he gave to the other girls that used to confess to him. This was genuine as he even says that there’s another. Yukari knows it’s Akane and he confirms. Called it!
The guild met up for a dinner with special food and drinks. Eita thought it’d be perfect for Akane and Yamada to have some alone time during the dinner. Things didn’t go according to plan. Yamada was late to arrive. And by the time he showed up, Akane was drunk. Déjà vu from the first episode. Yamada drags her to her home and that’s when Akane asks if he likes her. Yamada says yes. And to make sure that this is real, he promises to remind her when she sobers up that this is true.
Yamada x Akane is official!
This was a cute story despite how things started. It’s not like we haven’t seen similar things happen in other animes. Akane wasn’t even trying to become Yamada’s girlfriend after that time in front of her ex. It was just a sweet friendship that eventually blossomed into a relationship in the end. I always respect a story like that. One has to wonder if the anime will continue with a second season or if it will stay as is with the happy ending given in the 12th episode. By the looks of things, the manga is still on-going with at least 100+ chapters at the moment. I honestly think that the anime will stay with just this season. Well, if you’re looking for a cute slice of life, romcom, maybe check this out. It’s a short series.
Crunchyroll has every episode for streaming.

Has Minato and/or the rest of SEES and the family ever tried Ayame's baking?
Yes, and yes. Minato ate it a few times when younger, meaning it took him a while to realize how bad it was. Unlike with Fuuka, he couldn't tell his aunt how bad it was. So at this point, he'll make up an excuse for not eating any of it.
Kotone, meanwhile, chokes it down because she loves her mom. Tsubaki does the same because she loves her sister. Ren was a part of this team until he got older and started to follow Minato's footsteps.
Ayame ended up baking something when she and Shiro met the whole of S.E.E.S. the first time. She thought that it would be nice to do for them. There was little time to warn them about it.
I'm going to answer the rest as if it were MnM, since that's the one timeline where everyone is alive.
Shinjiro, Ken, Fuuka and Aigis are lucky to get off scot-free here. Aigis because she can't eat and Fuuka recognizes the face that Minato is making. Shinjiro and Ken both have enhanced senses, so on top of the former's culinary skill, they already can tell something's wrong and decline.
Akihiko is already intimidated by Shiro to some degree, so he's not going to say no and doesn't realize anything is wrong with Ayame's baking until he's already swallowed it.
Junpei is being Junpei and falls into the same camp as Akihiko. He's too busy talking that he doesn't realize what he just ate until its in his mouth. He only swallows it and shuts his mouth because of Yukari.
Yukari, Ryoji and Mitsuru are being polite in this situation, much like Kotone. They ate them without issue, struggling a bit with the taste.
Kotone later apologizes for not warning them about her mother's baking skill sooner.

Round 2 Has Finished!
Hey, no tiebreakers this time!
Not much to say this time. Most of the results were what I expected but I do have some questions about others (please feel free to answer said questions).
If you would like to see the percentages and some commentary, continue reading. If not, I will see you soon for round 3.
Ayame Mikuri (51.9%) vs Miyuri Yukari
Pia Undo vs Tsubasa Hanekawa (75.2%) - I know nothing about Divine Gate, but I do think Pia's outfit is quite cute. A little sad she lost.
Toyo vs Madoka Kaname (84.3%)
Livia Medeiros (50.7%) vs Rena Minami - ... Really? Alright then.
Sana Futaba (78.3%) vs Asahi Miura
Kaede Akino (56.8%) vs Sudachi Suwa
Mikoto Sena (51.7%) vs Hotaru Yura
Saki Asami vs Mikage Yakumo (82.6%)
Sasara Minagi vs Amaryllis (81.1%) - This was a much larger gap than I expected. Is her story that good or do people mostly just like the design better?
Ren Isuzu (76.3%) vs Kokoro Awane
Kuro vs Nanaka Tokiwa (70.9%)
Kagari Hinata vs Alina Gray (85.7%)
Mikura Komachi vs Yu (76.9%) - Please, I am begging someone to tell me why Yu. Why is she so popular? It can't be because she's a serial killer, other serial killer magical girls have lost this already.
Himena Aika (62.5%) vs Sayuki Fumino
Ashley Taylor (70.7%) vs Meiyui Chun
Mel Anna (77.1%) vs Ryoko Natsu
Hazuki Yusa vs Eternal Sakura (71.2%)
Mayu Kozue (53.4%) vs Kako Natsume
Rui Mizuki vs Kanoko Yachiyo (64.8%) - Aw man, the resident chuunibyou lost...
Masara Kagami vs Juri Oba (57.3%)
Kyoko Sakura (88.8%) vs Tsubaki Mikoto
Riz Hawkwood (75.4%) vs Kanna Hijiri
Chiharu Hiroe vs Mito Aino (59.2%)
Corbeau vs Tsuruno Yui (70.4%)
Yuma Chitose vs Mitama Yakumo (77.6%)
Yuna Kureha (66.2%) vs Riko Chiaki
Ayaka Mariko (74.6%) vs Meguru Hibiki
Momoko Togame vs Ui Tamaki (52.1%) - This was a little closer than I expected.
Ao Kasane (52.7%) vs Suruga Kanbaru - For a while, I really thought Suruga was going to win this.
Gunhild vs Homura Akemi (85.2%)
Sae Kirino vs Nagisa Momoe (74.3%)
Iroha Tamaki vs Yachiyo Nanami (62%) - It feels early to have two major characters face off, but the RNG willed it. And it wasn't that close.
Seika Kumi vs Nayuta Satomi (52.6%)
Karin Misono (56.7%) vs Kanae Yukino
Konoha Shizumi (68.9%) vs Shigure Miyabi
Oriko Mikuni (76.9%) vs Lapin
Olga vs Mifuyu Azusa (59.5%)
Felicia Mitsuki vs Mami Tomoe (72.2%) - Even against another major side character like Felicia, Mami has dominated. All hail Mami.
Rika Ayano vs Sayaka Miki (66.3%)
Mitsuru Inami vs Ikumi Makino (69.5%)
Kirika Kure (63%) vs Konomi Haruna

Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun: The Charming Comedy of High School Romance
Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun (Gekkan Shōjo Nozaki-kun) is a delightful four-panel manga series by Izumi Tsubaki that brings together humor, romance, and a touch of the artistic world. Serialized online in Gangan Online and published in tankōbon volumes by Square Enix, this series has captured the hearts of many since its anime adaptation aired in 2014.
Plot Summary
High school student Chiyo Sakura is head over heels for her classmate, Umetarou Nozaki. When she confesses her feelings, Nozaki, hilariously mistaking her for a fan, gives her an autograph. But the real twist comes when Sakura learns that Nozaki is a famous shōjo manga artist writing under the pen name Sakiko Yumeno. Determined to get closer to him, Sakura agrees to help him with his manga, Let's Fall in Love. As she assists Nozaki, the duo navigates through the ups and downs of high school life, encountering quirky friends and drawing inspiration from their experiences.
Meet the Characters
Chiyo Sakura: The bubbly protagonist with a crush on Nozaki. Known for her signature polka-dotted ribbons, Sakura is not just a fan but also Nozaki’s dedicated assistant. Her enthusiasm is as charming as her art skills.
Umetarou Nozaki: A tall and stoic high school student, who, despite his fame as a shōjo manga artist, is clueless about romance. His manga, Let's Fall in Love, might be about love, but his real-life experiences are hilariously lacking.
Mikoto Mikoshiba: Nozaki’s assistant whose flirtatious exterior hides a shy and embarrassed personality. He’s the inspiration for Nozaki’s heroine, Mamiko, without even realizing it.
Yuzuki Seo: Sakura’s athletic friend with a knack for unintentionally offending others. Her blunt personality is balanced by her hidden talent as a singer, earning her the nickname "Lorelei."
Yuu Kashima: The charming, androgynous star of the school drama club, adored by everyone except for Hori, who is often exasperated by Kashima’s antics. Her affections are secretly reserved for Hori.
Masayuki Hori: The drama club president and Nozaki’s assistant. Though he’s a talented actor, Hori prefers directing and has a short fuse, especially when dealing with Kashima.
Hirotaka Wakamatsu: Nozaki’s former basketball teammate who now helps with manga screentones. He is hilariously tormented by Seo’s antics but finds solace in her singing.
Supporting Characters
Ken Miyamae: Nozaki’s grumpy yet competent editor who is well-regarded despite his stress-induced weight gain.
Mitsuya Maeno: Nozaki’s former editor who is more interested in cute characters than in managing his duties.
Yukari Miyako: Nozaki’s neighbor and a shōjo manga artist herself, keeping her identity a secret while struggling with her editor's quirks.
Mayu Nozaki: Nozaki’s lazy younger brother who draws inspiration from otaku culture in his judo club.
Ryōsuke Seo: Seo’s older brother, who awkwardly tries to get closer to Miyako while misunderstanding his sister’s feelings for Wakamatsu.
Rei Kashima: Kashima’s younger sister, who is a big fan of Yumeno Sakiko’s works and dreams of romance.
In the Manga: Characters from Let's Fall in Love
Mamiko: The charming heroine modeled after Mikoshiba, with a look inspired by Sakura’s ribbons.
Saburo Suzuki: Mamiko’s love interest, drawn as Nozaki’s favorite face.
Oze: A popular male character in Nozaki’s manga, inspired by Seo’s personality.
Waka: A supporting female character modeled after Wakamatsu.
Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun is a blend of comedy, romance, and the behind-the-scenes of manga creation, making it a delightful read for anyone who enjoys a good laugh and a touch of artistic flair.
