YU-YU KONDO from CARDFIGHT VANGUARD OVERDRESS/WILL+DRESS
Tumblr media
JUSTIFICATION:
"Listen. *LISTEN.* I have made three whole essays about how trans this girl is. To sum it up: her deck’s comic is transformation, her avatars are all female, she’s more confident in a dress, she confesses to having a secret she hasn’t told anyone but never actually to what that secret is, honestly I’m still expecting them to maybe make her come out in later series of the franchise, because, there’s so much evidence of Transness that I honestly don’t see how it could be unintentional. Again: three whole essays." - @infinity-squared-comics

A Transgender Reading of Cardfight!! Vanguard Overdress.
Yu-yu Kondo is trans. It’s written into the core of their character. This is probably the most trans coded character I have seen in any media. And I have evidence, both textual and meta textual, to support this. Keep in mind that as a trans girl myself I have a certain perspective looking into this.
Textual Evidence:
In the speech in overdress episode 24, Yu-yu comments on having a secret they can’t share with anyone. This secret is not brought up before or since in the show, nor is it ever confirmed or stated what this secret is. While not confirmed, it is quite possible and even likely that this type of secret would be a matter of identity, such as being queer in some way.
Yuyu is shown to have a greater level of confidence in early episodes while wearing feminine clothes
Yu-yu smiles in episode 15 when complimented on their makeup skills, and is shown to enjoy applying makeup
While it seems like Yu-yu being nervous to present feminine in public might be seen as evidence against a feminine identity, it could also be seen as nerves at presenting openly that many trans people face, especially early in their transition.
Yu-yu’s main clothes in the first two seasons are fairly androgynous, with the pullover very much resembling a “dysphoria hoodie” that many trans people wear to alleviate gender dysphoria by hiding body shape. Yu-yu’s will+dress outfit as well is not heavily gendered, and the only especially masculine clothes they’re seen to wear in the show is the school uniform, which they would not choose themselves.
Meta textual evidence:
Looking at the cards Yu-yu plays, the first vanguard is an egg. An “egg” is a term used to refer to trans people before they realize they’re trans, and it would be very fitting for a trans character to start each game as an egg before evolving into their true form.
The second and third cards in Yu-yu’s ride line are both female humanoids, and the grade 3 Nirvana that acts as Yu-Yu’s avatar in fights is seen going from a more androgynous to a much more feminine form throughout it’s three cards. As the vanguard is the card meant to embody and represent you as the fighter, it is very possible that Yu-yu choosing feminine cards for their vanguard could hint at a feminine gender identity. As well, Nirvana’s gradual change from androgynous to feminine could be seen as a symbol of Yu-yu growing more confident in their own feminine identity.
The overdress mechanic is a mechanic of change, as Yu-yu puts it, of accepting all parts of yourself and moving forward, and is very fitting and apt as a trans metaphor.
In series precedent:
Cardfight vanguard has had gay people before, shown by team new Nippon in the G series, where Arata Nishizawa confessed his love to two other boys. While prior vanguard series have kept queer relationships between main characters as heavy subtext, and it is possible that the same will happen in the current series, I like to believe that the casual acceptance and normalization of queer identities in early episodes of season 1 (when Megumi thinks Yu-yu and Danji are dating) gives me hope that we’ll have confirmation. Having a trans person, especially a main character, in one of my favorite franchises, would mean the world to me, and to countless other fans.

I realized Danji satisfies the men in his life better than the women.
His male friendships consist of: Yu-yu: Classic bro relationship, friendly competitors, help each other with character development Tohya: Beat Tohya up so bad he came to his senses and upgraded to being a hobo Michiru: Pseudo-caretaker and errand boy Sam: Steamy hot affair Partners against Uniformers Zakusa: Friends who watch over Blackout
Compare that to the women in his life: Megumi: Arguably negative role model with how little he notices her and his overall attitude to bigger problems Haruka: Mostly her fault The irresponsible half of Mirei's caretakers compared to Haruka's responsibility and loyalty Sophie Bell: Unsatisfying fights in America Mirei: Abandoned her without warning and failed as a big brother before Tomari: Notable exception; they seem to get along and work together fine

Since we have yet to see this season’s obligatory heavily trans coded yu-yu speech, I have high hopes for Friday’s episode.
