lee yu-yeon is the laura palmer of manyang. meaning that everything revolves around her murder. everyone's life has been impacted by her murder in some capacity, and she made the town what it is when she died.
she made han gihwan's career, and provoked his downfall. she made lee dong-sik a policeman, a martyr, a scapegoat, a wanderer. she made han joowon come to the substation, and she made him meet lee dong-sik. she made kang jinmuk the perfect serial killer of the town, but she also led to his arrest. she made park jeong-je the enemy of his mother.
everything started and ended with her. she permeates the plot, the characters, the stories, the town... even though she is not the only tragedy, she is the original tragedy that gave birth to the very storyline of the show.

Would Dong Sik be able to go back post-canon?
Meaning, would he still be able to work as a police officer? It seems unlikely.
First, there is the Article 33 ("Disqualifications") of the State Public Officials Act. If you want, you can read it here (KO) and here (EN). I think these clauses are applicable to Dong Sik, where one is deemed to be disqualified if they are:
4. A person who was sentenced by the suspension of the execution of imprisonment without prison labor or a heavier punishment and for whom two years have not passed since the period of suspension expired;
6. A person who is disqualified, or whose qualification is suspended, pursuant to a judgment of the court or other Acts;
7. A person who was removed from his office by a disciplinary action, and for whom not less than five years have not passed thereafter; and
8. A person who was dismissed by a disciplinary action, and for whom not less than three years have not passed thereafter.
Second, there is also the Article 8 ("Qualifications for Appointment and Grounds for Disqualification") of the Police Officials Act. Links are here (KO) and here (EN). According to it, you are disqualified if you are:
5. A person sentenced to the suspension of qualification or any heavier punishment;
10. A person subject to a disposition of expulsion or dismissal from office as a disciplinary action.
Therefore, if I understood all this correctly (which I doubt), it is highly likely that Dong Sik would not be reinstated as either the court or the police would see it unacceptable for what he has done -- moving a murder victim's body parts. Even supposing he somehow succeeds in appealing to them and being granted to go back, he would have to wait several years.
However, even if it was an option, would Dong Sik want to regain his old job? We all know why he became a police officer. "If I become a police officer like you [Nam Sang Bae], will I be able to find Yu Yeon? Will people forget by then? Will they believe that I didn't kill anyone?" Now, he finally found his sister, and everyone knows that he is not a murderer. His goals of lifetime have been fulfilled. Maybe he would not want to go back after all.
Still, it is such a shame, because I really wanted to see him and Joo Won work as cop partners/colleagues again.

I have to say that I'm really intrigued by "delicate" and "2:by desire".
Hey anon, thank you for sending me this ask! From this tag game
Delicate is a jwds fic inspired by the song Sweet Nothing by Taylor Swift. The fic focuses on the early stages of Joo Won moving in with Dong Sik post-canon, and him coming to terms with being in a relationship. It currently has some major tonal issues, and I don't really know what to do with it. But I'll share the opening paragraphs with you
Dong Sik doesn’t wear gloves when he washes the dishes and Joo Won can’t stop staring.
This isn’t the first time Joo Won has noticed him doing it, if anything, it’s far more common than one might think. Dong Sik doesn’t use any foresight when washing the dishes and even allows the foamy suds to creep into the calluses on his knuckles, causing them to dry his hands out until they crack with speckles of flaky skin. After every time, it’s Joo Won who massages moisturiser into the brittle patches to help soothe his raw hands. Joo Won is starting to believe that the older man is doing it on purpose. Right now, though, with the winter sun's harsh glow casting their home into an auburn haze of warmth and safety, Joo Won can’t help but just watch. He knows he does it too often - “it” being his insistent observing - and he’s not entirely sure why he can’t take his eyes away from the man in front of him. It’s been this way since the first time he came across Dong Sik’s picture in a case file, and only escalated and grew with intensity with each passing day. But why would he want to look away? Why would he want to miss a possible clue that could lead to a hint, a piece of evidence, a lead, or just something that might mean that Joo Won knows him more than he already does?
By Desire is an ongoing canon-compliant wip that is a part ii of my fic Indoctrination. It follows the events from episode 9 to episode 13, and all the in-between moments we didn't get to see. It's basically just Dong Sik falling in love with Joo Won and struggling with it, because... well... for obvious reasons. There are already two chapters published- I didn't mean for it to be a wip but... I'm... letting it marinate (yeah, we'll go with that lol)
Yu Yeon was wearing one of her nicer tops, an off-white short-sleeved thing that wasn’t frilly per se, but it definitely was far more girly than the usual boxy t-shirts she sports.  That top paired with her light blue jeans and the butterfly clips in her hair, made her look nice... as if she was making an effort. Which was silly because they were only meeting up with Jung Je and Ji Hwa at the fishing lakes, there wasn’t any reason to look nice.
“We were meant to be having a nice day,” she mutters, hugging herself for warmth. That’s when Dong Sik noticed that her off-white top and its synthetic material had become almost completely see-through from the rain. He shrugs off his teal sports jacket and hands it to her.
She pauses with a questioning look, he just shrugs and replies, “your- Uhm, you’ll be cold like that.” She looks down and gasps when she sees the state of her top. She ripped the jacket from her brother’s hand and was quick to cover herself, zipping the oversized jacket all the way to her chin. She didn’t need to thank him, the blush on her face was enough.
Dong Sik sat down with a heavy sigh, unzipping the bum bag tied around his hips and fished out a metal container. They were going to be stuck here for a while, he might as well be comfortable. “Come sit down, you’ll wear yourself out. We can’t go anywhere until the rain stops anyway.”
Thanks again for sending me this ask! I hope you enjoyed the snippets! 😊
(I know that "bum bag" is a term more commonly used in the UK, if you don't know what it means, it's a fanny pack... Fanny has a very different meaning here...)

thinking a lot lately about how dong sik’s first-ever in-person interaction with min jeong in beyond evil was him finding her drunk and blacked out in a club thinking a lot about how dong sik’s impulse is to bodyslam the guy who got her drunk thinking a lot about how furious dong sik was thinking a lot about dong sik saying in a deadly, low voice “what, so you just left her around what if she got hurt” and thinking a lot about how dong sik is of course exasperated with min jeong (for the love of god please just pick up your phone) but he never judged her for her questionable life decisions (just gave her water + made her sleep in the break room + gave her a phone charger + also quietly agreed to not tell kang jin mook about where min jeong was the night before) thinking a lot about how easy it was to fall a little in love with dong sik in that moment because of course it’s easy to feel sorry for the victims like yu yeon who had a very typically bright future ahead of them (yu yeon, who was going to go to law school and was the perfectly sweet church girl, who pointed out the leaves in her mom’s hair and texted her brother to please come over, otherwise our parents will be mad at you), but something about how beyond evil really said that it doesn’t matter whether someone made questionable life decisions or not, victims will never, ever, ever deserve what happened to them whether they were the sweet goody two-shoes or the party girl who ran away to go clubbing and drinking with her friends like they are both deserving of love they are both deserving of being angry about when they’re hurt they are both deserving of being remembered

I saw a post that was like "what is your favorite scene from BE?". I don't have just one but the one that has taken over my brain tonight is when Jung-je and Dong-sik are in the basement and Jung-je confesses. Dong-sik tells Jung-je for the first time in 20 years that he knew that him and Yu-yeon were seeing/dating each other in some capacity. He knew the deer drawings were Yu-yeon. He knew Jung-je was in love with her.
I can't imagine staring at pictures your friend made for 20 years and slowly, painfully piecing together that they symbolize the beauty of your lost family member. When you think about it, the reason Jung-je "killed" Yu-yeon was because he chased after her crossed. He chased after her to get her back. Jung-je's love killed Yu-yeon.

interesting how the only 2 people kang jin mook wanted to kill but couldn't ended up dying from car accidents. yoon mi hye dies from a car accident a year before the events of beyond evil, and though yu yeon was able to run away from jin mook initially, the double whammy car accidents by jeong je and gi hwan ended up taking her life.
interesting as well how jin mook and dong sik somehow mirrored each other. they both spent 20 years looking for someone who ended up dying in a car accident. the only difference is jin mook looked for mi hye to kill her. dong sik looked for yu yeon to save her.

Some pieces of information -- mostly about Dong Sik and Joo Won -- I've learned from the scriptbook.
(Note: The content of the scriptbook might not be 100% same with the canon facts.)
- Dong Sik was born on May 30, 1981 at 7 AM in Manyang. Joo Won was born on August 13, 1994 at 7 AM in Seoul.
- Dong Sik is good at Taekwondo and boxing.
- Dong Sik started his military service in November, 2000, shortly after Yu Yeon went missing. He was still serving when his father died. Dong Sik received a special leave to arrange his funeral.
- Dong Sik started working as a police officer at Munju Station in November, 2007. He was transferred to RIU of Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency in May, 2015 and worked there till October, 2017. He was on leave for the whole year of 2018 before he started working at Manyang Substation in January, 2019.
- Dong Sik killed Song Ji Oh, the murderer of Lee Sang Yeop, at the scene. He told this to the EMT and later in his report, but Nam Sang Bae got rid of the statement from the official documents and took the responsibility himself. As a punishment, Nam Sang Bae, who was soon to be promoted to be a Unit Leader, transferred from Seoul to Manyang and became the Chief of the substation.
- Joo Won's apartment is in Mapo-gu, Seoul. The room number is 2701, which means his place is on the 27th floor.
- Joo Won graduated from Westminster Under School and Eton College. He finished high school in Korea.
- Joo Won was exempted from military service as he got admitted to Korean National Police University. (He got into the university in 2013. For that year, the number of places was 120 and 7,641 people applied, which makes the admission rate approximately 1.57%.)
- Joo Won started working at Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency in March, 2017. (Meaning, he and Dong Sik technically worked in the same building for about eight months.)
- Joo Won speaks Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese. He is also good at Judo and Kendo.
- Manyang Garden (만양가든) was a kalbi (갈비) restaurant.
- Chief Nam was alive when he was attacked in the junkyard, all the way to the port. In the trunk of Lee Chang Jin's car, he sang, almost whispered, the song to himself. "I feel lonely leaving without you, I feel so lonely... Don't cry, don't cry tonight..."

Why the FUCK did Jeong-je hit Yu Yeon with the car (which I assume caused her death.)
Was he having a psychotic break and lost control of the car or heard voices saying she needed to be offed/saw her as a deer/whatever? And if so, he doesn't seem like a psycho murderer type or even a terrible person, why on earth didn't he admit it as he saw his BFF get falsely accused, go nuts etc etc? Like you don't get much in prison for what is at most a manslaughter and he seems to be desperately miserable as is.
But also how did the serial killer get ahold of the corpse to chop off fingers and bury her in the walls?
Man, all of Dong Sik's "friends" are awful - he'd be better off making friends with literal drug dealers and mobsters.

ok looks like the "Han Joo-won is a stupid nepotism baby who isn't intelligent enough to be a cop without his Father's support" crowd is at it again on my post, so it's a good time to remind everyone of some actual facts of the show and the character, not just unsupported personal preferences infantilizing him and taking away his agency 💃
Joo-won is a top graduate of the KNPU, the police academy of Korea that is on par with some of the most prestigious universities in the country. Did his father help him get admitted? Probably yes but his father didn't also do all of his courses, and pass his exams to earn him honor and rank of lieutenant upon graduation. He also attended UK Westminster under school and Eton College during his time in England according the scriptbook, so there's no question as to his academic intelligence.
Joo-won correctly deduces that the illegal immigrants Foreign Affairs was investigating were being murdered by a serial killer, not a gang, when no one else in his department had pieced that together. He then examines old cases with similar MO's and uncovers Yu-yeon's case, which no one else had looked at in 20 years.
After coming to the realization that Dong-sik is not the killer, he correctly deduces that Dong-sik placed Min-jeong's fingers on the bench and thus knows who the real killer is.
He correctly deduces that Busan and Jin-mook's ex-wife are important to his psychopathy and motivations. He may have even gotten Jin-mook to confess if it hadn't been for a death certificate and some fishing line.
He correctly deduces that Jin-mook was killed by someone in the police force in an attempt to cover up another crime. He also suspects that Jeong-je and Chief Nam have some knowledge or involvement, a fact that Dong-sik himself had not even concluded yet.
After admitting that his father could be involved, he again correctly deduces that Han Ki-hwan will want to meet with Lee Chang-jin in private and may reveal some details about the crime, thus securing the recording of Han Ki-hwan's confession. Let's bear in mind that Han Ki-hwan is a smart guy who knows how to cover his ass and he may not have exposed himself as Yu-yeon's killer if it wasn't for Joo-won.
And again, Joo-won correctly deduces from Jung Cheol-mun's text that Dong-sik is about to be framed for murder and goes to the house in his stead to prevent that from happening.
Does Joo-won abuse his authority and use nepotism in his favor? YES ABSOLUTELY. This is not a post supporting all of Joo-won's choices or overlooking the fact that what he did to Lee Guem-hwa was fucked up. My point is that, as viewers who have intimate knowledge of Dong-sik's actions and the truth of who the killer is before Joo-won does, it's easy to sit here and laugh at him getting led on a wild goose chase by Dong-sik (who, keep in mind, spends the first few episodes acting like a straight-up lunatic). He had no reason to suspect Jin-mook, a guy who managed to fool everyone for years INCLUDING DONG-SIK. The problem, in my opinion, is Joo-won's methodology and myopia (two things that afflicts plenty of other cops in the show not just Joo-won) not his intelligence. I'd even argue to say that Joo-won becomes an even better cop without his father's influence or the nepotism, not a worse one. He's learned from his mistakes and can stand on his own as an inspector. And, if it wasn't for him, Han Ki-hwan might have gotten away with everything.

how the image of abel and cain was used to portray lee dong-sik and lee yu-yeon
a not so short draft of an essay
Tumblr media
ricardo j. quinones
1- abel and cain
not everyone is familiar with biblical stories (and it's normal) so here is their story as you can find it in some versions of the genesis, further analyses will be cited as i go:
Tumblr media
wikipedia, genesis 4:1-18
2- lee dong-sik and lee yu-yeon
. since they are twins, their link to one another is reinforced. where age and gender could semiotically separate them, the fact that they are twins means that they are half each other's whole person. it is of course not true when you apply it to a realistic dimension. but on a symbolic level, they are doubles and they do reflect each other.
. lee yu-yeon was chosen to be the conventionally successful one, leading a good christian life, to whom praise and opportunities were given due to her good temperament. arguably it was subjective.
. lee dong-sik was the 'hopeless' child, constantly compared to his alter-ego. but it does not always seem fair or justified.
. however, the twins did not apply society's judgement to one another. lee dong-sik did not resent lee yu-yeon for being well-considered. lee yu-yeon did not resent lee dong-sik for not being as successful and hard-working as her. they cared for each other, and did not let external factors tear them apart or create jealousy and dissensions between them. if they ever argued, i best believe it most likely had nothing to do with the values of society or of their religious community, but just brother-sister shenanigans.
3- lee dong-sik as cain and lee yu-yeon as abel
. lee yu-yeon and abel are symbolically the first murder victims, both in the bible and in the context of the show. lee yu-yeon starts the storyline.s that we are following, even though previous crimes had been committed. you can see my post on lee yu-yeon here, where i mention it separately. on top of this, ricardo j. quinones mentions abel as such:
Tumblr media
and indeed lee yu-yeon is the missing piece in solving the crimes in manyang. she is also the christlike figure of innocence who receives the most compassion due to her integration in society's conventions.
. lee yu-yeon and abel are both favored by higher authorities, be it by god in the bible, or by adults, society, and religious community in beyond evil. both in the bible and in beyond evil, this preference proves to be arbitrary, difficult to substantially back up, and unfair. even perhaps not willed by the concerned protagonists. this preference is also the reason why their deaths become so pivotal in each story.
. lee dong-sik in parallel is not cain. but he is turned into cain by figures of authority. he is framed, and most importantly, rendered responsible for his sister's disappearance. if we refer to the wikipedia passage of the genesis i included, it is textually visible that both lee dong-sik and cain reject at first the responsibility for their sibling's disappearance. only, one is being honest, and the other deceptive. cain's story was the easiest narrative to apply to lee dong-sik: the jealous, treacherous brother who stole a precious life because of a wounded pride. and bodies were found in a field where lee dong-sik's guitar pick was once planted, echoing to the first crime in the bible, and its perpetrator.
. arguably, lee yu-yeon's disappearance and the accusations against lee dong-sik echo to the cain-abel story, as ricardo j. quinones puts it:
Tumblr media
the twins' story marks the shift between what manyang could have been before the murders and what it became, a shift in its dynamic, the end of a way of life. paralleling the cain-abel story and lee dong-sik - lee yu-yeon's is also useful in the exploration of family dynamics, and how preferences between siblings can prove detrimental.
. since the unconscious of manyang perceives lee dong-sik as the bearer of cain's appearance, he receives equal punishment, although he is in fact innocent. he is cursed with being a wanderer. and with that: an untouchable wanderer, so that his punishment is even greater than just being an outcast. he is unpunishable for a crime he is believed to have committed, but he is forever judged poorly by his peers. he is not sent to prison, but he never reintegrates society per se.
ernesto livorni points out cain's condition as follows:
Tumblr media
. we can also take quite literally the fact that god curses cain with never being able to cultivate the soil again. lee dong-sik is left to hope for lee yu-yeon fo twenty years, unable to find any traces of her wherever he is looking. and his endless quest takes a major part of his life away from him, forever. he is left living on nothing, always seeking what he cannot find.
4- some other thoughts
. now, that was the most obvious links that came to my mind. but the show in itself insists on deconstructing the cain narrative built around lee dong-sik. and to do so, as aforementioned, they portray the twins' relation as bulletproof to society's imposed rhetoric on their dynamics.
they loved each other, and supported each other. there was no jealousy, no resentment, no competition. love is the final answer provided by the writers of the show to end dissensions, or to cope with them within communities.
. in parallel, lee dong-sik was able to break away from his curse when he could expose the truth and find lee yu-yeon. he was also able to receive punishment for his misdeeds, and able to clear his name, to find a new sense of community.
. lee yu-yeon died in a field, yes, but her body was trapped in the wall of her house. this also breaks away from abel and cain's narrative: the evil was not her brother. it was something else. the town's people were wrong in assuming lee dong-sik could do something like this to his own sister. not being able to find her body for so long was lee dong-sik's curse and redemption. he both suffered from a lack of closure, and then gained a definite means to prove that he was innocent.
. i'd like to conclude my brief analysis with once again a quote from ricardo j. quinones, which i think sums up well the importance of how the cain-abel story was used in the context of beyond evil:
