History fun fact #2: (gonna try and do as many wholesome ones as possible) on December 24th, 1914, soilders when in the trenches during World War 1, former a truce. The two sides, the British and the German forces, had let down their weapons and formed a truce from December 24th to the 25th. It was reported they played a game of soccer (football), and snag Christmas carols. The truce started when some unknown German soilders had placed a miniturare Christmas tree in between the two trenches. It was reported there was 148 deaths that day, but none took place on that battlefield, the Yser Front.

WW1 battlefield tour ephemera - 1929 by Frederick Via Flickr: This is an original map, excursions leaflet, and tickets for a WW1 Yser battlefield tour that took place on 18 Aug 1929. The tour organisers are 'The British Touring Cars (Excursions by Luxurious Motor Cars)'. Being just 11 years after the end of WW1 many people went on a sort of pilgrimage to the battlefields where their loved ones had died to try in some small way to come to terms with the loss. Itinerary - Ostende, Middelkerke, Niuupoirt, Ramscapelle, Pervyse, Dixmude, canal de l'Yser, Woumen, Chateau Blankaert, Steenstraete, Boesinghe, Ypres (lunch), return by Hill (Hell?) Fire Corner, Hill 60, St-Jean, St-Julien, Poelcapelle, Foret d'Houthulst, Houthulst, Dixmude, Beerst, Couckelaere, Moere, big gun, Leffinghe, Ostend. ---------------------------------------------------- If there are any errors in the above please let me know.
