Rabiya Mateo representing Iloilo City bested the remaining 45 official candidates in this year's search for Miss Universe Philippines 2020.The coronation of the pageant was held at the Cordillera Hall of Baguio Country Club in Benguet Province, the host of the finals of the 8 months search for the fairest Filipina. MUPH Baguio City candidate says 'bagtit' is one beautiful word in Baguio's local language; netizens react

Bea Theresa Peralta Maynigo, the 24-year old contender who represented Baguio City in the recently held Miss Universe Philippines 2020, gained backlash from some Baguio City netizens after the preliminary interview held at Baguio City Country Club last October 21, 2020 wherein candidates were asked series of questions and one of which is on what is one beautiful word in the candidate's local language or dialect and what does it mean. When asked about this, Ms. Baguio answered "Bagtit" which means crazy.

"Uhm... I think one beautiful word in the local language of Baguio is 'BAGTIT' which means crazy. (laughs) Because I think in life, we need to not be serious all the time. We have to have fun. We have to be crazy in love, crazy in our aspirations in life and we have to crazily work hard for the things we want to happen in our lives", answered Ms. Baguio.

While some netizens took it as a funny answer, others were not really happy about it contending that, said word is not even a native Cordilleran word and that there are a lot of beautiful words in their dialect. In a post by a netizen which gained many comments and shares on Facebook, it says that, "When representing a place in a pageant or any competition, be sure to immerse yourself in the community you are representing. Know their culture and social contexts to answer questions correctly."

Patricia's supporters on the other hand, wer quick to back the candidate. They countered that she actually made a good rebut, and that she was able to give good reasons to her answer considering the pressure of representing the host City in such a prestigious event.

Furthermore, in the same interview, Patricia shared that even though she was not raised in the City, she was proud to represent the place that has changed her life and the place that made her dreams come true which is Baguio City.

Patricia was born in Pangasinan but is currently a student of Saint Louis University. She was crowned Miss Baguio in 2015. She is also a former Ambassadress of Goodwill Philippines 2015, Pangasinan’s Top Model in 2017, Miss Tourism Global Philippines 2018, Miss Magic 2018 and Miss Tourism Global 1st Runner up.

The preliminary activities including the interview, and the respective competitions for national costume, swimsuit, and evening gown helped determine the 16 finalists, who were named during the coronation day held over the weekend. Among the top 16 candidates were the candidates of Aklan, Albay, Biliran, Bohol, Davao City, Ilo-ilo City, Cavite, Quezon City, Mandaue City, Misamis Oriental, Cebu City, Cebu Province, Romblon, Parañaque, and Taguig.

Meanwhile, at the most awaited final round, Ms. Rabiya Mateo from Ilo-ilo City bagged the crown as Ms. Universe Philippines 2020. Parañaque City’s Ysabella Ysmael was hailed the first runner up while Quezon City’s Michele Gumabao was named as the second runner-up. Bohol's Pauline Amelinckx was third-runner, followed by Kimberly Hakenson of Cavite who was hailed the fourth runner-up.

MANILA – Malacañang on Monday congratulated Rabiya Mateo of Iloilo City for being crowned as Miss Universe Philippines 2020 during the pageant's pre-taped coronation ceremonies on Sunday.

“Binabati po namin si Miss Iloilo Rabiya Mateo na tinanghal na Miss Universe Philippines kahapon (We congratulate Miss Iloilo Rabiya Mateo who was named Miss Universe Philippines yesterday),” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a Palace press briefing.

Roque, who was among the pageant’s panel of judges, expressed hope that Mateo’s reign would be “fruitful” and “productive”.

“Nag-align ang mga bituin para siya ang iproklamang pinakatatanging Pilipina sa buong Universe (The stars aligned so that she can be proclaimed as the most unique Filipino in the whole universe),” he added.

Mateo, who bested 45 other candidates, will represent the country in the next Miss Universe pageant.

Parañaque City’s Ysabella Ysmael was named first runner-up while Quezon City’s Michele Gumabao bagged second runner-up honors.

Bohol’s Pauline Amelinckx was named third runner-up while Kimberly Hakenson of Cavite was fourth runner up.

Besides Roque, among the judges were ACT-CIS Rep. Eric Yap, former Miss Universe Philippines winners Janine Tugonon and Ariella Arida, fashion director Jackie Aquino, Frontrow founder and CEO Sam Verzosa, IPG Mediabrands Philippines CEO Venus Navalta, Baguio first lady Arlene Magalong, Procter & Gamble group director for media Arthur Peña, and Raymond de los Santos.

Berioso The annual Mister and Miss Olivarez College 2020 culminates in a grand finale last January 20 at the jampacked Olivarez Coliseum inside the school campus in Sucat, Paranaque City.
