Lowering the voting age in the UK.

Lowering the voting age? Are you serious? Unless we start teaching our children how the political system actually works, this is nothing more than a blatant attempt by Labour to scrape together a few extra votes. Let's get real here: our youth are barely managing to figure out their own identities, let alone navigate the complex web of political parties and policies.

Just think about it for a second. We're talking about an age group that spends more time scrolling through TikTok and Instagram than engaging with current affairs. They can tell you the latest viral dance move, but ask them to name the Chancellor of the Exchequer, and you'll be met with blank stares. 

It's not all their fault; we haven't equipped them with the tools to understand or participate meaningfully in the political process. Don’t get me wrong they can learn by themselves just like I did.  Personal responsibility goes a long way.  

If we lower the voting age without addressing this glaring gap in education, what are we really achieving? A superficial sense of inclusion that does nothing to foster informed, responsible citizens. Instead of genuinely empowering young people, we’re setting them up to be pawns in a cynical game of vote-chasing.

The Labour party needs to grow up and face reality. If they’re serious about engaging the youth, they should be pushing for comprehensive political education in schools, not pandering to a demographic that isn't ready to shoulder the responsibility of voting.

The truth is, many of today's teenagers are still figuring out who they are in a rapidly changing world. Expecting them to make informed decisions about the future of our country when they can barely decide what they want for lunch is not just unrealistic, it's downright irresponsible.

Sure, young people have a fresh perspective, and their voices are important. But let's ensure those voices are informed and educated before we hand them the power to shape our nation's future. Lowering the voting age without proper education is a disservice to both the youth and the democratic process.

So, unless we're ready to make a serious commitment to political education, let's drop this ridiculous idea of lowering the voting age. It's time to stop treating our youth as political pawns and start investing in their future the right way.

          It’s my opinion that young people (ages 18-24), do not utilize their right to vote as much as they should. I guess I should be saying “we,” not “they,” since I’m 21, but I would say that people my age get pretty frustrated with politics on both sides of the spectrum, and never seem to do much about it. I don’t know if that’s because we feel unqualified or uninformed or something, but that’s part of what my blog, FB page, and Twitter will address. My goal is to educate and encourage young Ohioan voters so that we can begin to really make a difference in politics.

          As exciting as it must be to attend rallies, and as therapeutic as it is to vent online, none of that will make as much of a difference as voting does. Over the course of this semester, I will inform my followers on how easy voter registration can be, as well as how quick and easy it is to go out and vote! And since many 18 to 24-year-olds are in school (whether that be high school, college, or grad school), I will also touch on absentee voting policies.

          I also want to remind readers that the presidential elections aren’t the only ones that matter; voting in your local and state election is just as important. Another thing to remember is that your voice and your vote truly do make a difference! It doesn’t help anyone when you shrug and say “Oh, well, I don’t like either candidate, so I’m just not going to vote.” Instead, get online and try to inform yourself on the politicians’ stances and beliefs and go vote from there! No one is perfect, and most candidates will likely have some points that you don’t fully agree with. But that doesn’t mean you should just “pass” on your right to vote! The future of your city, state, and the country is subject to your vote, and regardless of whether you vote Democrat or Republican, you should take advantage of the fact that you get to vote at all. There were plenty of times throughout history when people were unable to vote the way they wanted to (or at all), and I’ll talk about that a bit more in some of my next blogs.

          We are all fortunate enough to be able to vote starting at the age of 18, no matter our race, sex[ual orientation], or beliefs. One other thing that I love about voting is that there’s no good excuse not to. The polling locations are always organized based on where you live, so it’s at least nearby your house, and I actually just saw that the company/app, Lyft, is providing free and discounted rides to the polls starting with the November 2018 elections! And if you’re in school, or for whatever reason you’re NOT nearby your house, you can always submit an absentee ballot or vote early in-person (stay tuned for my next blog to learn more about that)! And, if nothing else, you get a great sticker after voting, so don’t miss out!
