Page 11. --- Committee Reviews Steps Taken Thus Far Cat Meeting ---- The passing of every day is arousing more and more interest in the proposed plan for a recreational and physical fitness campaign in Hamilton, interest that was evidenced yesterday when a number of organizations asked to be affiliated during a meeting held by the Recreation Committee in the Y.W.C.A. Among those offering their services were the Canadian Youth Hostel Association, the Hamilton Interscholastic Athletic Committee, the Public School Association and the Secondary Schools Physical Directors Association.

The following acting chairman and co-chairman of committees were set up to function over the week-end and to report to the Tuesday afternoon meeting to be held in the Y.W.C.A. at 5 o'clock: Survey committee, Professor J. W. Watson, McMaster University; industrial committee, Miss Evelyn Hartwell; publicity, J. J. Syme and Sam Manson; finance, James Garrow; program, Major Arthur Burridge and Miss Margaret Heilig; nominations, Wilfred Bircher; resolutions, Mrs. J. W. Watson, Miss Heilig was appointed acting secretary.

Any Person May Join The committee made it clear that any organization or individual is welcome to join, and that any new endeavours would be included in the proposed program. The committee and sub-committees are of a temporary nature and delegates attending the conference, to be held soon, should be prepared to appoint a provisional committee to carry on the early stages of the organization.

A five-point program has been decided upon under the following headings: Arts and crafts, music, athletics and physical education, dramatics, religion and social recreation. Under these headings there will be nearly 150 different activities, in other words, something to interest every Individual of any age.

glee headcanon that, in the hudmel house, it's a rite of passage to pick your seat at the dinner table.

when a new friend comes to join the hudmel-hostel, carole asks them where they want to sit. and they sit there from then on whenever they come round (which ends up being a lot, some of them even sleeping there a lot of the time.)

and for a lot of them it's one of the closest things to family they've experienced. so it's pretty big. and pretty beautiful.

On February 13th 1931 the Scottish Youth Hostel Association formed.

Following preliminary meetings in 1930s, the Scottish Youth Hostels Association was formed in Edinburgh in1931at a public meeting chaired by Lord Salvesen ‘To help all, but especially young people of limited means living and working in industrial and other areas, to know use and appreciate the Scottish countryside and places of historic and cultural interest in Scotland, and to promote their health, recreation and education, particularly by providing simple hostel accommodation for them on their travels.’

District Committees were formed in early 1931 in Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen and, later that year the first hostel was opened at Broadmeadows in the Borders. By 1936, there were 48 hostels with a membership of over 12,000.

In 2018 the SYHA , as such, ceased to exist in its current guise and was rebranded as Hostelling Scotland.

The new logo is said to reflect the internationally-recognised symbol for youth hostelling, with a blue background using the colour of the Saltire flag. They have over 60 youth and affiliate hostels, the last pic showing the new logo is in Aberdeen.
