Teen smoking hit an all-time low in the U.S. this year, part of a big drop in the youth use of tobacco overall, the government reported Thursday. There was a 20% drop in the estimated number of middle and high school students who recently used at least one tobacco product, including cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, nicotine pouches and hookahs. The number went from 2.8 million last year to 2.25 million this year — the lowest since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s key survey began in 1999. “Reaching a 25-year low for youth tobacco product use is an extraordinary milestone for public health,” said Deirdre Lawrence Kittner, director of CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health, in a statement. However, “our mission is far from complete.” A previously reported drop in vaping largely explains the overall decline in tobacco use from 10% to about 8% of students, health officials said. The youth e-cigarette rate fell to under 6% this year, down from 7.7% last year — the lowest at any point in the last decade. E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco products among teens, followed by nicotine pouches.

On October 30, the FDA went after companies selling these sneaky e-cigarettes that look like smart devices—phones, gaming gadgets, you name it. They even have flashy features like display screens and smartphone connectivity. Now, you’d think that’s tech-savvy, right? But no. The FDA is calling it what it is: a blatant ploy to attract kids. Brian King from the FDA even said, “There’s nothing smart about these products,” and honestly, I couldn’t agree more. They’re deceptive, and they’ve got to go. Then, just a few days later, on December 2, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi turned up the heat. He announced an investigation into Chinese manufacturers flooding the U.S. market with illicit vaping products, like the popular Elf Bar. Speaking at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, he didn’t mince words about how these colorful, youth-targeted vapes are a major public health issue. What stood out to me is how he called for federal resources to tackle the problem. This isn’t just a local issue—it’s global, and we need all hands on deck. And as if that wasn’t enough, on December 5, the FDA came back swinging again. They issued warnings to 115 retailers for selling unauthorized vapes like Geek Bar. What’s wild is that data from this year’s National Youth Tobacco Survey shows how popular these brands are with kids—Geek Bar alone was used by nearly 6% of young e-cigarette users. The FDA is now teaming up with states to crack down harder on this problem. It’s like watching a chess match, with regulators making one big move after another. Looking Back: Lessons from the Trump Era But here’s the thing: this fight over vaping isn’t new. You remember the chaos back in 2019, right? That was when President Trump faced mounting pressure to address the youth vaping epidemic. Instead of banning flavored vapes outright—something many people were pushing for—he took a more calculated approach. He banned flavored pods but left open-tank systems and vape juices untouched, recognizing that vaping helps many adult smokers quit traditional cigarettes. It wasn’t a perfect solution, but it was pragmatic. It allowed the industry to survive without completely compromising public health efforts. Fast forward to today, and we’re facing the same tough questions, but now the stakes feel even higher. The FDA has only authorized 34 e-cigarette products to date. That’s it. Yet, shelves are flooded with unregulated, youth-friendly products. And let’s not even get started on disposable vapes and the environmental headache they’re causing. Did you hear about the UK planning to ban disposables in 2025 because of waste issues? It’s a similar conversation here in the U.S., and I’m not sure how it’ll play out. What makes this even trickier is that while regulators are tightening the noose, there’s also a need to keep adult smokers in mind. People forget that vaping started as a harm-reduction tool—a way for smokers to quit without going cold turkey. But when you see products disguised as gaming devices or candy-flavored vapes targeting kids, it’s hard not to feel like the industry brought some of this on itself. Learning from Europe: The TPD Model While the U.S. grapples with how to regulate vaping effectively, Europe’s Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) offers a framework worth studying. Since 2016, TPD compliance has set strict standards for e-cigarettes, ensuring products meet rigorous safety, packaging, and promotional guidelines. These measures help keep only high-quality, reliable devices on the market while protecting consumer safety. A great example of a TPD-compliant product is the ALD Combo Pack, which cleverly balances innovation with regulation. The device features a 2mL refillable pod—adhering to the TPD’s rule limiting tank sizes to 2mL—paired with an additional 10mL screw-on bottle. This combo achieves a total 12mL e-liquid capacity without violating TPD limits. This approach not only meets legal requirements but also enhances convenience for users. Adopting a similar model in the U.S. could help streamline the vaping market by filtering out unsafe and non-compliant products while still fostering innovation. With the right adaptations, the TPD’s mix of clear regulations and consumer protections could serve as a blueprint for a balanced regulatory environment in the U.S. The Path Forward: Balance and Collaboration So, where does this leave us? It seems like a delicate balancing act. The vaping industry needs to clean up its act, plain and simple. Stop targeting kids. Invest in sustainable practices. Work with regulators, not against them. At the same time, regulators need to be smart about this. Blanket bans don’t work. We’ve seen that before—they just push things underground. Instead, targeted actions, like going after illicit imports and deceptive marketing, seem like a better bet. And let’s not forget public perception. There’s a lot of misinformation out there about vaping. On one hand, you’ve got people who think it’s the devil, and on the other, people who think it’s completely harmless. The truth is somewhere in the middle, but we need clearer communication to help people make informed choices. So, yeah, it’s a mess. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned from watching this play out, it’s that history matters. Trump’s 2019 decision showed us that balanced policies can work. If today’s leaders take that lesson to heart, maybe—just maybe—the vaping industry can weather this storm and come out stronger on the other side. James Donaldson on Mental Health - Annual state survey of teens finds increase in mental health problems

Yereth Rosen, Alaska Beacon Alaska teens are more likely to be depressed and have suicidal thoughts than were teens a decade ago, and some mental health problems have increased notably among girls, according to results from the state’s most recent Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Administered in 2023 to nearly 1,200 high school students around the state, the survey found numerous negative trends. Of the respondents, 19% reported attempting suicide at least once over the past year, compared to 8.7% in the 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The number who reported they had considered suicide came in at 23%, compared to 14.5% in 2011. And 43% reported feeling sad or hopeless for such extended periods that they were not able to carry out some of their usual activities, compared to 25.9% who reported feeling that way in the 2011 survey. Alaska’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey is administered to students every two years, though 2021 was skipped because of the COVID-19 pandemic and school closures. Results from the 2023 survey were released this month by the Alaska Division of Public Health. In many mental health measures, girls reported more problems than boys. Among female respondents in 2023, 56% reported feeling too sad to engage in their usual activities, versus 32% for male respondents. While 20% of all respondents reported being cyberbullied — up from 15% in 2011 — 25% of the girls said they had been victimized that way. Other survey results revealed worsening lifestyle habits. High schoolers maintaining a healthy weight dropped to 64.3% in 2023 from 71.9% in 2011. More students, 53.1%, reported drinking at least one sugary beverage in the prior week in the 2023 survey, compared to 44.9% in 2011. Those engaging in the recommended 60 minutes of daily exercise dropped to 18% in 2023 from 21.3% in 2011. Lindsey Kato, director of the Alaska Division of Public Health, said she was saddened by the findings. “My heart breaks for our young Alaskans who are struggling and for families across the state,” Kato said in a statement. “These statistics reinforce the continued work that is needed to support our children and families to improve community connectedness, economic stability and access to quality health services; the need for public health and public safety to work side by side our violence prevention work, so that Alaskans can focus on things like physical activity, education and nutrition.” The Alaska results mirror some of the national trends, as reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nationally, surveys show more mental health distress, including thoughts of suicide, particularly among girls. However, the Alaska survey also shows some positive trends. Use of tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes and exposure to tobacco smoke is down, as is consumption of alcohol, according to the results. Tobacco use continues its long-term decline among high schoolers. For example, 6.5% of the 2023 survey respondents said they had smoked a cigarette in the prior 30 days, compared to 14% in 2011. The decrease in vaping “is obviously a really exciting thing to see,” said Katie Steffens, deputy program manager for the Alaska Tobacco Prevention and Control Program. The program, which is part of the Division of Public Health, has a wide-ranging strategy to discourage vaping, including working with schools, community groups and a “Not Buying It” campaign to counter e-cigarette companies’ youth-focused marketing. A similar downward trend was observed among eighth and 10th graders, and for those three age groups when it came to cigarette smoking. In 2023, just 15 percent of seniors said that they had smoked a cigarette in their life, down from a peak of 76 percent in 1977.Illicit drug use among teens has remained low and fairly steady for the past three decades, with some notable declines during the Covid-19 pandemic.In 2023, 29 percent of high school seniors reported using marijuana in the previous year — down from 37 percent in 2017, and from a peak of 51 percent in 1979.There are some sobering caveats to the good news. One is that teen overdose deaths have sharply risen, with fentanyl-involved deaths among adolescents doubling from 2019 to 2020 and remaining at that level in the subsequent years.Dr. Nora Volkow has devoted her career to studying use of drugs and alcohol. Then you stop the progression from drugs that are more accessible, like tobacco and alcohol, to the illicit ones. And teenagers don’t get exposed to advertisements of legal drugs like they did in the past. All of these policies and interventions have had a downstream impact on the use of illicit drugs.Does social media use among teens play a role?Absolutely. Social media has shifted the opportunity of being in the physical space with other teenagers. That reduces the likelihood that they will take drugs. And this became dramatically evident when they closed schools because of Covid-19. You saw a big jump downward in the prevalence of use of many substances during the pandemic. That might be because teenagers could not be with one another.The issue that’s interesting is that despite the fact schools are back, the prevalence of substance use has not gone up to the prepandemic period. It has remained stable or continued to go down. It was a big jump downward, a shift, and some drug use trends continue to slowly go down.Is there any thought that the stimulation that comes from using a digital device may satisfy some of the same neurochemical experiences of drugs, or provide some of the escapism?Yes, that’s possible. There has been a shift in the types of reinforcers available to teenagers. It’s not just social media, it’s video gaming, for example. Video gaming can be very reinforcing, and you can produce patterns of compulsive use. So, you are shifting one reinforcer, one way of escaping, with another one. That may be another factor.Is it too simplistic to see the decline in drug use as a good news story?If you look at it in an objective way, yes, it’s very good news. Why? Because we know that the earlier you are using these drugs, the greater the risk of becoming addicted to them. It lowers the risk these drugs will interfere with your mental health, your general health, your ability to complete an education and your future job opportunities. That is absolutely good news.But we don’t want to become complacent.The supply of drugs is more dangerous, leading to an increase in overdose deaths. We’re not exaggerating. I mean, taking one of these drugs can kill you.What about vaping? It has been falling, but use is still considerably higher than for cigarettes: In 2021, about a quarter of high school seniors said that they had vaped nicotine in the preceding year. Why would teens resist cigarettes and flock to vaping?Most of the toxicity associated with tobacco has been ascribed to the burning of the leaf. The burning of that tobacco was responsible for cancer and for most of the other adverse effects, even though nicotine is the addictive element.What we’ve come to understand is that nicotine vaping has harms of its own, but this has not been as well understood as was the case with tobacco. The other aspect that made vaping so appealing to teenagers was that it was associated with all sorts of flavors — candy flavors. It was not until the F.D.A. made those flavors illegal that vaping became less accessible.My argument would be there’s no reason we should be exposing teenagers to nicotine. Because nicotine is very, very addictive.Anything else you want to add?We also have all of this interest in cannabis and psychedelic drugs. And there’s a lot of interest in the idea that psychedelic drugs may have therapeutic benefits. To prevent these new trends in drug use among teens requires different strategies than those we’ve used for alcohol or nicotine.For example, we can say that if you take drugs like alcohol or nicotine, that can lead to addiction. That’s supported by extensive research. But warning about addiction for drugs like cannabis and psychedelics may not be as effective.While cannabis can also be addictive, it’s perhaps less so than nicotine or alcohol, and more research is needed in this area, especially on newer, higher-potency products. In a recent media forum, he highlighted the importance of preventing minors from accessing vaping products, underlining the role of police, vendors, and stores in strictly enforcing these regulations. Herbosa noted a decrease in tobacco use from 29.7 percent in 2009 to 19 percent in 2022, attributing this partly to the sin tax on tobacco. However, there is a concerning rise in e-cigarette usage among the youth, from virtually non-existent to 14 percent recently.  

The Growing Concern of E-Cigarettes

Rise Among the Youth Data from various studies, including the 2019 Global Youth Tobacco Survey, show an alarming trend of e-cigarette use among students nationwide. The Philippine Pediatric Society's 2021 data revealed that 11 percent of students aged 10 to 15 years had already tried vapes. The Complex Discussion Around Social Media Article Think Piece

I recently read an online article by Peter Charalambous published to ABC titled “Amid what's being called a youth mental health crisis, is social media facing its own 'tobacco moment'?”, a news story that looks at how social media may be affecting youth’s mental health for the worse, and I decided I wanted to not only go into detail about the story, but to also share my thoughts on the article. 

The article first dives into studies suggesting that excessive use of social media for youths may be detrimental to them and that for some children, such excessive use may be a contributing factor to what has been deemed a public health crisis. However, such research into social media’s mental health is still incomplete, while some experts also note the positives that social media brings, while asking for social media to be more open ended to the whole situation. 

Secondly, companies such as YouTube and TikTok showed ways in which they have tried to address such issues, such as YouTube implementing safeguards for young users, removing potentially harmful content and TikTok adding bedtime reminders and age restrictions. 

Next, an advisory goes into depth about how there is enough evidence to suggest that social media can affect children and adolescents, detailing not only the 60% increase in suicide rate between ages 10-24 between 2011-2021, but also a conducted survey that shows the deteriorating mental state of teen girls. This is all culminated by the fact that 95% of teens between the ages of 13-17 use social media and getting its own comparison to smoking, in its excessive use that only worsens one’s state. 

The advisory continues his notes on excessive use by saying how social media can expose youth to harmful content and replacing the time children would be interacting in person socializing, especially during one of the most important periods for brain development. 

However, both experts and the advisor do note that social media also brings its benefits, such as social acceptance among others. The experts also continue by reaffirming how there is not enough evidence to suggest that social media has had a widespread psychological effect on youth.  

Finally, the article wraps up by awaiting more evidence to back up such claims on the effects of social media, the future it holds in our society and the fight against its impact. It challenges parents to be more responsible, for the government to use its ability to regulate, and social media companies deflect responsibility. It concludes with optimism that action will take place.  

In my opinion, I thought this was an insightful article that tries its best to show the potential harm that social media has on the youth, while also doing its best to shed light on the positives that social media brings.  

While I am still of the opinion that social media is a positive tool in our society, I believe that it is something that should be regulated, especially for the youth, as excessive use can be something that can potentially be harmful for younger demographics, especially in terms of brain development and psychological effects. It is also important for such awareness about the potential effects that social media have may be widespread, so that the negatives be mitigated as much as possible. 

In conclusion, it is a well thought out and researched article piece that anyone should be interested in and given the current state of society and where social media may be taking us, would be extremely valuable knowledge to know.

"Volunteer Farm Help Promised," Windsor Star. April 20, 1943. Page 5. -- Committee of 10 Named to Organize Army; Press for Aid by Conchies ---- Initial steps for the organizing of a large land emergency army of Windsor citizens willing to pledge part time farm service were taken at a meeting of delegates of 20 city organizations held in the Women's Division of National Selective Service last night.

PREDICTS MILK RATIONING The action followed addresses by representative farmers and canners who described the general situation as so serious that it needed immediate attention. One speaker, Albert L Bruner of Ruthven, told the meeting that a survey has shown the dairy problem to be such that he asserted that milk rationing by September could not be avoided.

The crop outlook was also stated to be most serious due to reluctance of farmers to plant larger crops than they feel might be harvested.

Called by the Windsor National Selective Service Advisory Committee, the meeting was presided over by La W. Wheelton, chairman. A committee of ten representing different Windsor groups was authorized to organize the land army and temporary headquar- ters for the registration of volunteers in the National Selective Service office.

Those appointed were Miss M Catherine Straith. representing the Local Council of Women: L. P. Laforet, for the war veterans: Fred Steele, labor: R. A. Clark, of the Canadian Industries Limited, industry; N. W. Harold, secretary of the YMCA, youth: Very Rev. Wilfrid J. Langlois, dean of Essex County, the churches, The chamber of commerce, city council, service clubs and retail merchants are also to be asked to name representatives.

UNHARVESTED CROPS "They do not want to spend a lo of money on planting unless they are assured of adequate help for harvesting." Charles O'Brien, of Roseland. member of the Essex County Farm Manpower Committee, said, telling of the farmers' position. "Many of them lost a lot of their crops last year be- cause they could not get help or machinery to do the work."

A charge that 462,000 bushels of soybeans alone went to waste in Kent and Essex counties last year because it couldn't be harvested was made by Mr. O'Brien. who gave figures published in a government issue of "The Canadian Coarse Grains Review" under his authority. In addition, he said, he had personal knowledge of many acres of hay and tomatoes rotting in fields because of lack of help.

"When food is so vitally needed by the United Nations we can not afford to allow that again next year," he said, urging preventive action. "Canned goods of some kinds are hard to get now because of those crop losses last year and it will be worse next winter," said H. E. Stokely, of Essex, chairman of the county farm manpower committee.

Mr. Stokely said farmers would face a crisis in harvest time if they did not get help. "We are asking them to plant more and to get them to do so we must give them assurance that we can find the help to do the harvesting." he said.

A recommendation that the committee press the government to speed up action on its decision to place conscientious objectors on farms was endorsed by the meeting after John Coghill, Kingsville tobacco grower, stated that the government had approved such action but the help was needed at once. "I put in a bid for two of these boys in February and haven't got them yet," he said. Under the plan approved, the con scientious objectors would be paid $25 per month and the rest of their wages paid would go to the Red Cross and other services.

FAVORS SOLDIER AID Mr. Wheelton suggested that a proposal to release some soldiers in army camps on a basis of three days military training and three days farm working might be practical. He said he didn't see why it wouldn't be useful for the area around such places as Chatham.

Alex Buchanan, veterans' representative, suggested the committee ask for special gasoline allowance for those assisting in the transportation of volunteer farm workers, Harry Lassaline, secretary of the chamber of commerce, read a list of proposals from his organization which called for the early setting up of a downtown recruiting office for farm volunteers, arrangements for transportation and organization of mobile farm units.

Other speakers included Harold Clark of Harrow, H. B. Taggart of Kingsville, A. B. Morgan of Belle River, B. Ormseth of Tecumseh, E. J. Parent of the C.I.O., and Kenneth Jordan, secretary of Windsor and district Boy Scouts, and Mrs. Cameron Montrose, president of the Local Council of Women, all of whom gave assurance of co-operation.
