you can ignore this if its too personal or annoying im sorry i was just looking for advice from someone whose been here if you have any?
im 16 and theres a lot of reasons why but im living on my friends sofa right now but i cant stay here long and im just here to ask if you have any advice on how to get housed
you dont need to answer im sorry that this is the first thing i send to you i really do enjoy your stuff <3
HEY !! no worries whatsoever. genuinely. this is why i'm so open about this stuff !! i'll put it under the cut and also my dms are ALWAYS open, you can pop in there if you have any questions, or need someone to yell over the phone for you
okay so !! assuming you're from the uk? i assume so if asking me:
i had a really awful experience :/ and i don't say that to put you off but rather like,,, i got most of this advice AFTER i was put in the first homeless shelter. i was couch surfing with a friend with a limited time frame too and these were the routes that i took:
1) social services
as you're under 18, they have a duty of care to make sure that you are in safe housing. i was already in an ongoing case so it was slightly easier, but if it is home related issues that have led to this, you call them (or get your school to contact them) and make them aware that you are currently unable to return home and need somewhere to stay.
from here what they'll do is try to amend things. which is,,, yeah. fucking sucked. i had weeks of them trying to explain how i could just go home and do family therapy as if we hadn't had over 90 cases with them. they're gonna try to send you back but you stand your ground and refuse to - at 16, you have the right to make your own decisions in these scenarios.
they helped me get into a homeless shelter and received further support from them but they may offer temporary care with them (which i've also had before, i was in the foster system for a while, and it isn't as scary as it seems! i was also told by the social worker that this would be temporary if it was the choice made, whilst they looked for more permanent housing)
i also want to add that it was very soon before i turned 18, which may have played a part in their support for my own accom over "rectifying the family" - i would've left at 18 anyway, so they were more supportive of finding alt accom. but there were a lot of people in my shelters that were 16 and just stood their ground to get there.
2) local council
a bit trickier because it's only at 18 that they have a duty of care over you BUT i did utilise them !!
i got rejected from the first 6 homeless shelters because they "didn't know what ward to put me on" (sadly, a massive reality for trans people)
so what i did then was hound my council: calling them up multiple times a day, turning up at the door of the civic center to speak to people, SLEEPING outside the civic center and refusing to move for police (i do NOT recommend this one but,,, it was the most effective. councils hate looking bad and a teenager sleeping outside their building?? yeah, worked a treat.)
side note here that whilst they aren't an official means by which to get support, if you're sleeping rough you can contact the police/turn up to the station and they will also find support for you!! again, not official but they can't turn you away if you're sleeping rough.
over 18s will get put on the housing list, under 18s will be connected to social services, temporary care, or shelters - and from there, more permanent solutions are found
3) youth groups
this was my biggest help !!! i really recommend these !!! the issue i had was that i was from one county, but my sixth form was in another so i was in that one. it caused some issues with social services etc as they tried to communicate between counties (insane because it was literally a 20 minute drive between the two but whatever) so i was in communication with social services from my home county that wanted me to get back there with no accom organised, and youth groups in the county i was actually in to try find somewhete to stay. a mess but they were incredible.
mine was literally "(county) young and homeless" - an organisation that helped people under 18 get into accommodation
these were the best !!! i was connected with someone who then communicated with the homeless shelter i ended up in, and i stayed connected with them until i found my supported accommodation
they have these in most, if not all, towns !! if not explicitly for homeless people, they absolutely will have a youth council/group to reach out to to get support
i find these especially helpful as they deal with complicated situations with a lot more empathy than social services and councils, and you get a direct connection. you're not just a number on a page or a name on the top of a file, you're connected with a case worker who communicates with you day in and day out - idk, it just felt nice to have someone that was voluntarily on my side rather than corrupt systems that are underfunded and have (mostly) awful staff
AND FINALLY: supported accommodations
this one i didn't know about until i was already in the YMCA, but most towns have a YMCA/other supported accom organisations (p.s difference between supported accom and homeless shelter: homeless shelter is free of charge and for a limited time - mine was 6 weeks as a crash pad - whereas supported accom is typically an 18 month tenancy with rent. if you're under 16, you're fine here!! they sort it all out, but for peace of mind for anyone else that potentially reads this, housing benefit covers most of it !! i quit my job because it was making my rent higher with less HB, and it dropped from £200+ a week to £11 a week which you get through universal credit)
these operate under an open door policy !!
i had to go through the homeless shelter and a short application process for the YMCA (literally like a few days and one phone interview where they get a bit of background) SOOO you can't just walk into one and get housed, obviously. especially because they're all incredibly overrun with the housing crisis etc.
what they 100% offer though is the option to walk in and speak to staff, who will then support you in finding accommodation. you might need to call up to do this, but we had so many people just buzz in and ask to speak to staff (all of which were either housed with us or sent elsewhere to be housed)
AND THAT'S ALL I CAN THINK OF RIGHT NOW !!! i hope that's enough avenues to try, and i'm sorry you're in this situation. i'm not going to sugarcoat because we both know how fucking awful it is to be in this space, but i will say that no matter how cliche and half-hearted it sounds, it really does get better and the support IS out there, it just sucks that we have to fight so hard for it.
but yeah, i hope this helps !!! if you have any questions or need resources sent over or someone to call up the council and yell at them, orrrr even just someone to talk to who gets it, my dms are always open <3
i hope you get the support that you need 🫂

THE PRINCESS OF WALES WILL VISIT STREETS OF GROWTH
Aldgate, London
Tuesday 19th September 2023
The Princess of Wales will visit Streets of Growth, a not-for-profit youth intervention charity in east London which is working to transform the lives of young people at risk of becoming trapped in a cycle of isolation, exploitation, violence and criminality.
Streets of Growth specialises in targeted outreach and intervention to re-engage young people aged 15- 25, taking an approach that balances organisation-led and community-led engagement. Over the past two decades it has transformed the lives of over 5000 young people. The organisation was established in 2001, inspired by a research visit to see the work of Roca in Boston, which the Prince and Princess of Wales visited during their time in the city in December 2022.
Like Roca, Streets of Growth uses approaches that tackle harm and create systems change using neuroscience and cognitive skills to better equip practitioners, young people and their families to break negative behavioural patterns and consequently play a central role in building thriving communities. Key to this is nurturing honest partnerships, including with police and youth offending teams, social services, schools and colleges, and housing associations in the approach.
Streets of Growth’s Appropriate Intervention Bridging Model looks at lifestyle, environment, education and careers. Frontline staff engage vulnerable young people who have experienced harm and trauma through a tailored pathway of specialised intervention coaching, skills development, social action and work experience across a wide range of sectors.
During her visit, the Princess will meet frontline staff to hear about the approach that Streets of Growth takes to identify, support and coach young people at risk. Many of the organisation’s staff were once young clients who have transformed their own lives and are now supporting other young people to transform theirs. Her Royal Highness will then spend time with individuals who have been supported by Streets of Growth; hearing first hand about the impact the organisation’s work has had on their lives.
The Princess will also meet with a representative from Unite Students, who have provided the new space for Streets of Growth at their flagship student accommodation building in east London, helping to increase the capacity of the organisation to work in this area.

This year’s Pride Month has rarely seemed so pointless. After all, only the truly shameless in the LGBT activist set could feel any pride in 2024 – a year in which the rainbow-flag fliers’ betrayal of gay youngsters in the name of gender ideology was laid bare.
The publication of the Cass Review in April exposed the scandal of the NHS’s treatment of ‘gender confused’ kids. It showed how the NHS’s Gender Identity Development Services (GIDS) subjected troubled, often gay youngsters to life-altering hormones, drugs and treatments. Yet when these same-sex-attracted young people needed a gay movement, it failed them. Stonewall, its principal representative, actively cheered on those encouraging gay youngsters to believe they were born in the wrong body. Former Stonewall CEO Ruth Hunt even warned parents that half their gender-distressed children would commit suicide without puberty blockers. At the same time, leading sections of the gay movement turned on anyone questioning the trans agenda.
You won’t see any reflection on this betrayal of gays and lesbians during Pride Month. There will be no recognition that by embracing gender ideology, the gay-rights movement of today has undermined the gay rights of tomorrow. Instead, an unholy alliance of corporates, trade unions and parading gendercrats will spend weeks celebrating their supposed virtue, while remaining oblivious to the absurdity and growing unpopularity of the movement they represent.
Don’t let the ubiquitous Pride flag fool you over the coming weeks into thinking this is a successful movement. How strong can a ‘gay rights’ movement be if it has allowed its next generation to be chemically castrated? How strong can a movement be that has allowed lesbians like Kathleen Stock or Julie Bindel to be deplatformed, harassed and sacked for standing up to gender ideology?
The new ‘Progress Pride’ flag tells the story of the movement’s corruption. A new trans chevron makes an ugly incursion from the left, with an ‘intersex-inclusive’ purple circle placed on top of it (despite some intersex activists asking not to be included). This is more of a logo now and less of a flag. It symbolises the hostile takeover of the gay-rights movement by gender-identity ideology.
Pride was once our answer to shame. The riposte to being kicked out of your home for coming out. The retort to everyday incidents of homophobia, which are now thankfully a thing of the past in the UK and the West.
Today’s Pride is different. It is not a response to a sense of shame. It is a false pride born of shamelessness. A pride fuelled by the self-righteous embrace of the cause of trans rights. Think of Stonewall CEO Nancy Kelley calling lesbians ‘sexual racists’ in 2021 for not wanting to have sex with biological males. Think of those happily suppressing moderate gay voices for warning that ‘conversion-therapy bans’ simply criminalise ordinary therapy for gender-confused youth. Or how Stonewall did everything in its power to hound gender-critical barrister Allison Bailey out of a job.
If one must take pride in anything during Pride Month, I prefer to find it in the spirited and steadfast work of women and gay people in the UK who, against all the odds, have taken on gender ideology and its champions within the gay movement. Organisations like LGB Alliance and the Gay Men’s Network, which I direct, have done sterling work in defending gay rights from the predations of gender ideology. It has been tough. We have had to battle against an elite consensus. It wasn’t that long ago that both Theresa May and, later, Sir Keir Starmer were promising Pink News that gender self-identification would become law. Now, in part thanks to the efforts of gay-rights activists and gender-critical feminists, the sitting and shadow secretaries of state for health and social care are committed to implementing the findings of the Cass Review.
Pride, the holy month of the rainbow, is now a thoroughly rudderless affair. Its foolish embrace of the specious cause of trans rights has cost it dear. This increasingly silly party now takes place against the backdrop of a generation-defining medical scandal that Pride and its backers endorsed. Even Stonewall seems cowed. It certainly seems less keen to pronounce that transing a two-year-old is a good idea than it was just a few years ago.
Pride should parade its way into irrelevance. The gay-rights activism of the future will need to look very different.
Dennis Kavanagh is a director of Gay Men’s Network.

Her recipes are redeemies for real
Walking around and searching for a job takes a long time
Agustín just happened to overhear some talk
Twice to once au! It's been some time, isn't it?
Agustín squeezed through the streets. After a while he was getting used to uneven ground. He didn't trip as often as before. (Which still was more than anyone else, but was it that surprising?). The sun was burning. It danced high above, jumping with hot rays. Luisa wouldn't overwork for now. She always held this promise until at least about a week after Agustín's birthday, before eventually slipping back. So Agustín didn't have to worty about it too much. (But he should still check on her). He didn't work on rebuilding much, it wasn't his competition. Even if he doubted it was anyone's competition in here. Becides, as he figured it out, helping with rebuilding was a volunteering thing. They didn't earn much money for it, if there was any payment at all. Rather, Agustín was a general worker. Chopping the wood or fix the roof. There were always many important things to do that people didn't want to work on themselves. At the same time it didn't tie Agustín to anyone else. He had struggled to keep an official job, taking him infamous clumsiness. The same thing that kept him at bay with how easy it was to get into accidents sometimes.
It had caused problems sometimes. Even if Agustín worked on himself, he had to fix whatever he ruined by accident during his work. Which meant it took twice as much time as it could, if not more. Of course, he had other skills too. He finished musical academy in his youth. But not everyone had piano in their house. Even less would want to fire a pianist. It were such rera occasions that Agustín didn't count them as actual invome.
And, there was no need to say he was going out often, suggesting to help. What could anyone need? Chop the wood, dig the garden. He would do it. It was enough for way to keep things under control.
"Damn, why doesn't Julieta make food anymore?" Agustín blinked, turning his head. to the sourse of the sound. Two young men talked leaned against the dilapidated wall, chatting without care. "It tasted so good"
As far as Agustín knew, feeding anyone for free was expensive. Usually it was a while sosial organisation that would give foor to the poor beggars. But as far as Agustín had saw the place, he had never seen any form of social services, aside from people going out to help if someone was too weak. There was on organisation in them and so Agustín had to assume food was entirely Julieta's initiative. She would have resources for it, as the Madrigals were leaders of the community and should have more money that anyone else.
"Damn, Jose, you're right! Why can't we just get a free food? Hers was the best"
"Señora Julieta made food for free?" Agustín asked to himself. He didn't initially plan to speak out loud, but sooner realised that he did. Starting an awkward tension that swimmed in the air with the adroitness of a rocketed bird
The blond-haired man swallowed, copper eyes stared at him in worry. "You're that newbie," he muttered breaking the intorerably noisy and burning iced silence.
Agustín fixed his glasses, nervous. "Sorry, I just don't really get it." He shrugged, tilting his head down. An untouchable weight lied on his neck, the same way wind could cuddle in hair.
Another man, Señor Rodriguez, Agustín recognised him now, he had helped him with to clean his house several days ago. He was serious and loved to complain a bit too much for Rojas' taste. Even if he wouldn't confirm it out loud. Señor Rodriguez fidgeted with a button on his yellow shirt, twisting it around like a paper ball. "Julieta used to have a stand of free food!"
"Can you not afford food by yourself?" Agustín raised a thin eyebrow. The last time he checked, Señor Rodriguez wasn't broke. He had a good house, a heathly baby boy and could afford cleaning services instead of doing it himself. There was no way he didn't have money to buy food.
"What? No, of course I can." Señor Rodriguez replied in high-pitched voice He shook his head nervous fron misunderstanding.
The other guy, blonde, Agustín hadn't talked to him before, explained. "It's not about money. Señora Julieta just an amazing cook!"
Amazing cook? Okay, Agustín could confirm it. He visited Madrigals a couple of times. Usually with Pepa. They grew friendly enough very fast. And because of it, Agustín did spend time with the triplets and Félix from time to time. Well, minus Bruno, that guy wasn't very social. So a couple of times Agustín had got arepas practically shoved into his mouth. And yes, Julieta was very skilled. Her food was like a nightingale song.
But it didn't change the fact that Julieta herself didn't hold a responsibility to feed people in the village. If she did it before, then she must be so kind. But right now she didn't even have her own house. It was obvious she would have too much going on to take care of this. Especially for free.
Agustín cleared his throat an asked in a sore voice. "Have you thought to pay her for cooking?" He stared at his interlocutors, looking from one to another.
"Pay?" One of them asked, shocked. As if the idea was personally offensive to him. "But it's her responsibility!"
What?
"How is it her responsibility if she's not earning anything?" He clarified, remembering the fact that according to their words it was all for free. "In most places get even a piece of bread for free is nearly impossible."
Señor Rodriguez groaned with a quiet sigh. "She did this during her entire life. Becides, it's not even your business!"
"I'm just trying to understand.." Agustín fixed hus glasses. Which, in the moment of emotions slipped down, almost falling off his nose. He winced as somebody had pat hit hack twice.
Shifting his head to the side, he realised Señora Julieta was next to him, seeing the entire thing for some time. He wasn't sure for how long. He was too focused on the situation. The other men, now also seeing that the star of the chat was here, looked away awkwardly. Slightly guilty. They didn't mean Julieta to actually hear their complaints.
"That's alright, Señor." Julieta signed. "Don't worry about it much."
Agustín swallowed the spicy bile in hia throat. "They acted like you're supposed to feed them or something!" It was frustrating. The fact that they had enough nerve to ask woman, possibility twice of their age to cook for them for free. Like if they were kids. Neither he nor Julieta had payed attention to the pleads of innocence that followed by.
"Really, it's okay." Julieta tried to assure him. But Agustín was baffled at it. In what world it would be considered as normal?
The Madrigal had leaded him out, just by pure force. Ohh... What's with nice women being so strong? He had Luisa already, and Julieta seemed to pull him without much effort. On other hand, Agustín was pretty lanky, so possibly it was easy in reality. They went a good half of a kilometre away. Some villagers stared at this as they passed. Most seemed to barely pay at to it for a bit and then go back to their work.
Julieta swallowed, looking over her shoulder. Bit her lip. "Thank you," She nodded, nervous. "It was..." Looking away. "Nice of you." she whispered in a low voice
Agustín smiled, placing his hand on her shoulder. "It's okay, just bare manners." Some people definitely need those. It was so obvious Julieta had a whole lot going on in her life. He wouldn't be surprised if she stopped working even for money for the time being. Nevermind what kind of volunteering she participated into.
Señora chuckled, shooting her eyes up. Meeting Agustín's. "Mind coming dor a lunch?"

After a couple of incidents, I recently asked all my carers to be more respectful of my workplace and to take more of a background role while I’m at work.
While I’m in youth groups I need my carers to wait outside because confidentiality and safeguarding means they can’t be in the sessions, but I need them close by for when I need help with anything. My manager has said the organisation would arrange appropriate training and background checks if I need my carers in the room with me, but we both feel it would also be unfair to bring non queer adults with no experience working with queer youth into a queer youth group unless really necessary.
While I’m working in the office I prefer my carers to have more of a background role there too. It’s my workplace and I want to have as close to a “normal” experience there as I can. All my colleagues treat me like the competent adult I am and I really enjoy the independence I have there. I can talk to my colleagues about things I can’t really talk to my carers about (especially aspects of queerness) because I know my colleagues will get it. Having a carer right there in the room massively changes the dynamic.
Especially with That Carer. She views my workplace as somewhere to socialise and as an opportunity to demonstrate what a good ally she is. To do that she’ll just bring up horrific examples of queer phobia so she can say how wrong she thinks it is. We’ve told her before that it can be quite triggering to bring up constantly in a room of queer people where pretty much everyone has experienced hate crime but she won’t stop. She also loves to be the centre of attention which makes things difficult for me. Basically instead of supporting me to live my life the way I want to, she’s trying to live my life herself.
Yesterday evening after work (when I was totally shattered and really needed to be in bed) she came to me in tears because she didn’t like taking a background role while I’m at work. She said she wants to socialise with my colleagues more and said she feels rude not being friends with them. I assured her that no one thinks she’s being rude, just professional but that didn’t seem to help. She said she’s going to “reach boiling point” if I continue to have boundaries at work and don’t let her treat my workplace as her social life.
She then told me that I basically have three choices:
1) continue asking her to take a background role, but she said that would lead to her reaching “boiling point“ and having implied empirical outbursts while I’m at work
2) have get drop me off at work, leave me without care, and then come back later ( so I can’t put on or take off a jumper, get help with food and drink or my computer, take my as needed medication or deal with acute medical situations)
3) let her treat my workplace as a social club (and lose the really nice supportive environment I have there when she doesn’t)
None of my other carers have an issue with this. And when our service users bring carers and support workers, they always take a back seat and let the person they’re caring for get in with their lives. I can empathise with my carer being upset, and clearly she has stuff going on I don’t know about, but it’s so unfair to put it on me to manage her emotions. Letting me live my life is a huge part of her job and that requires boundaries especially while I’m at work.
I really need a break from her but I don’t get one until Friday

I.4.15 What will the workplace of tomorrow look like?
Given the anarchist desire to liberate the artist in all of us, we can easily imagine that a free society would totally transform the working environment. No longer would workers be indifferent to their workplaces, but they would express themselves in transforming them into pleasant places, integrated into both the life of the local community and into the local environment. After all, “no movement that raises the demand for workers’ councils can be regarded as revolutionary unless it tries to promote sweeping transformations in the environment of the work place.” [Murray Bookchin, Post-Scarcity Anarchism, p. 88]
A glimpse of the future workplace can been seen from the actual class struggle. In the 40 day sit-down strike at Fisher Body plant #1 in Flint, Michigan in 1936, “there was a community of two thousand strikers … Committees organised recreation, information, classes, a postal service, sanitation … There were classes in parliamentary procedure, public speaking, history of the labour movement. Graduate students at the University of Michigan gave courses in journalism and creative writing.” [Howard Zinn, A People’s History of the United States, p. 391] In the same year, during the Spanish Revolution, collectivised workplaces also created libraries and education facilities as well as funding schools, health care and other social necessities (a practice, we must note, that had started before the revolution when anarchist unions had funded schools, social centres, libraries and so on).
The future workplace would be expanded to include education and classes in individual development. This follows Proudhon’s suggestion made during the 1848 revolution that we should ”[o]rganise association, and by the same token, every workshop becoming a school, every worker becomes a master, every student an apprentice.” [No Gods, No Masters, vol. 1, pp. 62–3] This means that in a free society “Workers’ associations have a very important role to play … Linked to the system of public education, they will become both centres of production and centres and for education … The working masses will be in daily contact with the youthful army of agricultural and industrial workers. Labour and study, which have for so long and so foolishly been kept apart, will finally emerge side by side in their natural state of union. Instead of being confined to narrow, specialised fields, vocational education will include a variety of different types of work which, taken as a whole, will insure that each student becomes an all-round worker.” [Proudhon, Selected Writings of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, p. 87]
This would allow work to become part of a wider community, drawing in people from different areas to share their knowledge and learn new insights and ideas. In addition, children would have part of their school studies with workplaces, getting them aware of the practicalities of many different forms of work and so allowing them to make informed decisions in what sort of activity they would be interested in pursuing when they were older.
Obviously, a workplace managed by its workers would also take care to make the working environment as pleasant as possible. No more “sick building syndrome” or unhealthy and stressful work areas for “can we doubt that work will become a pleasure and a relaxation in a society of equals, in which ‘hands’ will not be compelled to sell themselves to toil, and to accept work under any conditions Repugnant tasks will disappear, because it is evident that these unhealthy conditions are harmful to society as a whole. Slaves can submit to them, but free men [and women] will create new conditions, and their work will be pleasant and infinitely more productive.” [Kropotkin, The Conquest of Bread, p. 123] Workplaces would be designed to maximise space and allow individual expression within them. We can imagine such places surrounded by gardens and allotments which were tended by workers themselves, giving a pleasant surrounding to the workplace. There would, in effect, be a break down of the city/rural divide — workplaces would be placed next to fields and integrated into the surroundings:
“Have the factory and the workshop at the gates of your fields and gardens, and work in them. Not those large establishments, of course, in which huge masses of metals have to be dealt with and which are better placed at certain spots indicated by Nature, but the countless variety of workshops and factories which are required to satisfy the infinite diversity of tastes among civilised men [and women] … factories and workshops which men, women and children will not be driven by hunger, but will be attracted by the desire of finding an activity suited to their tastes, and where, aided by the motor and the machine, they will choose the branch of activity which best suits their inclinations.” [Kropotkin, Fields, Factories and Workshops Tomorrow, p. 197]
This vision of rural and urban integration is just part of the future anarchists see for the workplace. As Kropotkin argued, ”[w]e proclaim integration… a society of integrated, combined labour. A society where each individual is a producer of both manual and intellectual work; where each able-bodied human being is a worker, and where each worker works both in the field and the industrial workshop; where every aggregation of individuals, large enough to dispose of a certain variety of natural resources — it may be a nation, or rather a region — produces and itself consumes most of its own agricultural and manufactured produce.” [Op. Cit., p. 26]
The future workplace would be an expression of the desires of those who worked there. It would be based around a pleasant working environment, within gardens and with extensive library, resources for education classes and other leisure activities. All this, and more, will be possible in a society based upon self-realisation and self-expression and one in which individuality is not crushed by authority and capitalism. To quote Kropotkin, the future workplace would be “airy and hygienic, and consequently economical, factories in which human life is of more account than machinery and the making of extra profits.” [Op. Cit., p. 197] For, obviously, “if most of the workshops we know are foul and unhealthy, it is because the workers are of no account in the organisation of factories”. [The Conquest of Bread, p. 121]
“So in brief,” argued William Morris, “our buildings will be beautiful with their own beauty of simplicity as workshops” and “besides the mere workshops, our factory will have other buildings which may carry ornament further than that, for it will need dinning-hall, library, school, places for study of different kinds, and other such structures.” [A Factory as It Might Be, p. 9] This is possible and is only held back by capitalism which denounces such visions of freedom as “uneconomic.” Yet such claims ignore the distribution of income in class society:
“Impossible I hear an anti-Socialist say. My friend, please to remember that most factories sustain today large and handsome gardens, and not seldom parks … only the said gardens, etc. are twenty miles away from the factory, out of the smoke, and are kept up for one member of the factory only, the sleeping partner to wit.” [Morris, Op. Cit., pp. 7–8]
Pleasant working conditions based upon the self-management of work can produce a workplace within which economic “efficiency” can be achieved without disrupting and destroying individuality and the environment (also see section I.4.9 for a fuller discussion of anarchism and technology).

Olive Elaine Morris (June 26, 1952 - July 12, 1979) was a member of the British Black Panther Party and a grassroots activist in Great Britain. She was born in St. Catherine. Her parents migrated to post-WWII Great Britain while she and her siblings were left in the care of their grandmother in Jamaica. She and her siblings re-joined their parents in London. She enrolled at the London College of Printing to continue her education.
In 1969, she intervened in the arrest of a Nigerian diplomat for a parking offense. The police brutalized her and six other persons. She was fined and given a three-month suspended sentence for two years. She was stripped and threatened with rape by London police. She utilized her experiences with London’s police to expose racism, sexism, and police brutality and to strengthen her political activism.
The Black Panther Youth League recruited her at 17 which furthered her activism. She formed the Brixton Black Women’s Group to focus on women’s experiences in the Black Panther Party. She played a significant role in the squatters’ rights campaigns in her Brixton community. She and other community activists squatted to help establish self-help community spaces including Sarbarr Bookshop.
She enrolled at Manchester University to earn a social science degree. She expanded her activism by working with the National Coordinating Committee of Overseas Students. She visited China and wrote an article, “A Sister’s Visit to China,” published in Speak Out!, the BBWG’s newsletter. Her article explored anti-imperialist struggles and self-help community strategies in the world’s most populous Marxist state.
She became a founding member of the Organisation for Women of African and Asian Descent and edited the organization’s magazine FOWAD! During this time, she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
The Brixton Service Centre was initially named ‘The Olive Morris House’. It was uncommon in Great Britain to name a building after a Black woman, especially a former member of the Black Panther Party. The building is still known as and listed online as the “The Olive Morris House.” #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Oh you went from volunteer to employee too?! Congrats! Is it the social worker with kids thing?
Close!
Three years ago I started what we call in France a civic service, which is when young people from 16 to 25 do volunteer work for various administrations/NGOs... Can be done in France, can be done abroad. It was basically introduced to replace military service, a middle ground between "we need to occupy the youth and have them contribute to society somehow but military service sounds to fash (nevermind that Macron is trying to reintroduce it now)".
I was volunteering for an organisation that accompanies disabled people. Originally I was supposed to work at a daycare for adults with ASD, but they proposed me to work in an ESAT and I foolishly agreed.
An ESAT (établissement et service d'aide par le travail) is a factory for mentally disabled people. And yes it's as bad as it sounds. And on top of that it was factory work and I was not paid and I had 3h20 of commute every day.
After two and a half months I asked to be transferred to the daycare which where I applied for in the first place.
I did the rest of my volunteering there and at the end my boss said that they liked my work but if I wanted to stay in that field I needed a social workers' degree.
There was also the fact that I had a master's degree in law which made me kinda overqualified for the job.
Initially I thought about getting the special educator degree but I had an excellent colleague who sat me down and screamed at me.
"you have a master's degree. You could be an attorney ffs. The fuck you're gonna waste your time being an educator. Aim higher become head of service"
Yeah but my boss thinks I'm too young...
How do you rate your bosses opinion?"
I didn't. When she asked me again I said I wanted to get the certification to be head of service in the social field.
They were opening another facility with a daycare and inclusive appartements. They were going to recruit a head of service anyway but they could use help so that's how I got my apprenticeship.
And then the head of service became vice-director and I got her position. I was acting head of service since march. Officially head of service since September 1st.
And I get to also run the daycare where I started.
So far I'm in charge of two daycares for people with neurodevelopmental disorders. 1, soon 2 inclusive appartements, and an outreach team. 30 workers. 44 beneficiaries. (So far).

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya on Tuesday said that 33 people have been arrested for spying for Israil in a major operation. “We will never allow espionage activities against the national unity and solidarity of our country,” Yerlikaya said.
The operation was jointly run by the Turkish Police and National Intelligence Agency, MIT, in eight provinces.
Yerlikaya said the operation was conducted “after it was determined that the Israeli intelligence service [Mossad] aimed to carry out tactical activities such as reconnaissance, pursuit, assault and kidnapping against foreign nationals residing in our country”.
During the operation, 143,830 euros and 23,680 US dollars in cash were seized in addition to weapons, bullets and digital materials.
Israel’s military operation in Gaza against Hamas, which has reportedly killed over 22,000 people, remains a major domestic issue in Turkey.
A court on January 1 arrested university student Ege Akersoy for punching a man who carried a “Tajweed” flag associated with jihadists who was returning from a Free Palestine march in Istanbul organised by the pro-government Turkish Youth Foundation, TUGVA – an Islamist NGO run by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s family.
The flag is used by Islamist jihadists as well as those who call for the restoration of a caliphate – an Islamic polity ruled by a caliph.
Akersoy was arrested for punching the man but others who attacked the student in front of police walked free.
At another event, Islamist groups called for the restoration of a caliphate, claiming that “the salvation of the Palestine can only be with the Caliphate,”. The caliphate has became a major topic in social media, further polarising Turkish society.
The Istanbul Bar Association called on the authorities on Tuesday to start legal proceedings against those who call for the restoration of the caliphate. “None of the rights and freedoms included in the Constitution can be used in activities aimed at eliminating the democratic and secular republic,” the Association said in a statement.
The last Caliph was Abdulmecid Efendi, a prince of the Ottoman dynasty. The Caliphate was abolished in 1924 after Mustafa Kemal Ataturk founded Turkey’s modern secular republic.
Turkey has accused Israel of genocide against Palestines since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7 and since Israeli striikes killed thousands of Palestinians in Gaza. While many Western countries designate Hamas a terrorist organisation, President Erdogan has defined it as a group of “freedom fighters”.
According to the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry in Gaza on Tuesday, at least 22,185 Palestinians including women and children have been killed in Israeli attacks since October 7. The death toll on the Israeli side stood at 1,400.

Hey #labour, you should hire me to talk at you about how to actually fix Britain:
Terfs are the enemy, Trans folx are the people.
Small businesses need support on the ground level in order to foster amazing communities.
Invest in education to the point teachers are as paid well as their private peers or dare I say as well as an MP. I would say that if an MP describes their role as being vital, integral and essential to running the country, who receives a handsome tax paid salary with expenses paid with the public purse, why is it that other public sector roles are paid relatively below minimum wage? This applies to all public sector workers; civil servants, NHS staff, and teachers of all stripes. They are just as vital, integral, and essential to running the country, if not more so, than the openly profiteering geezers in Westminster.
Why is it that the rule makers are more important than those ensuring that the rules work? Those holding up society and holding it together are so sorely underpaid in this country that they are giving their lives to you at pittance so you can be okay. The NHS is a wonderful thing, and it breaks my heart that we don't fully fund it. The same goes for education, social services, community organisations, and libraries. These currently literally keep people existing at the bare minimum, but when fully funded and staffed, they transform lives for the better.
Equal pay for Equal work 》 Equal pay for Equal Importance. Ignore the 'we can't pay them the hundreds of thousands that MPs get' elephant in the room. I want you instead to imagine a world in which all public sector workers are paid the exact same amount regardless of hierarchy or public aspect they interact with. I'm no expert, but I reckon £86,584, the basic annual salary for a UK MP in 2023, would be an absolute god send to a junior doctor on roughly £38k. My partner practically works at minimum wage for 50 hours when you account for the marking, the planning, the organisation of your entire schedule to an impromptu meeting with angry parents and worrying about ofsted. It has worn them down, mostly because we can't have a social life, spending money on the theatre, in shops, on things that make us happy and human. We can't save, and we can't afford nice things. That fucking sucks. It wears a person out and throws them out of the system that's holding up the world.
Everyone I know is feeling like the above, regardless if they're private or public, freelance or salaried. One solution to help is basic universal income. Give everyone over 16 £500 & everyone over 18 £1000 each month for a year and see how awesome it would be in a year's time. I already know how much good that would do to me and everyone I know.
So pay everyone £12,000 a year and then pay all public sector workers the base salary of £86,000 rising in step with inflation. If the private sector can, in theory, pay whatever wages it wants, having a guarantee that your basics are paid will eliminate sooooo much stress. Rich folx can donate theirs, college kids can do interesting work at college because £500 buys a lot of art supplies and travel to museums, exhibitions, and events. Youth would have means to explore the nation before university or set up in an apprenticeship. Our elderly can use it to afford end of life care provisions or enrich their retirement or hell, just keep the lights on. Working folx would undoubtedly benefit the most and would probably like their jobs much more if they know things are covered.
To foot the bill, impose a commons tax on all privately owned land that fairly compensates the commons, ie, the UK public, back.
Make the North part of your game plan, rather than a foot note.
On a serious note; nationalise the railway system and expand the network. It is hell going east to west here, up to 3 hours to go 50 miles west and just 3 to get to London from Selby in North Yorkshire. How is this acceptable?
Invest in working class politicians to bring the reality of Britain back into government. Without our views or experiences on the table, why are we surprised when the Tories fuck us over again? If you want true, enthusiastic support from the British people, do not talk at us as if we're irresponsible children and actually engage with the very liberal and progressive discussions we have daily. Especially people under 40 - the older generation that pulled us out of the EU will be gone soon - you need to court and actually help out.
