summers are not fair to humans.

the scent of iron and sweat constantly lingering in the air, the trademark humidity that comes with the heat doing little to suppress it. there’s really little they can do about it. regardless of the seasons, they’re always prey. always food for ghouls, even those that pride themselves on a synthetic diet, denying themselves of their true nature to coexist with humans.

summer is just a little more unforgiving.

but there can be a misconception that ghouls do not cannibalise. a misconception among the ignorant—or the fearful. her hand inside the chest of an a-rated ghoul debunks that though. that’s never enough, so her rinkaku plunges through his head, painting the wall of a building crimson over faded brick. even if his heart still beats in her grasp, she can see the life fade away from his kakugan.

you can’t blame her. he was arrogant bastard who didn’t respect the rules of territorial feeding grounds. a cockiness pertinent to younger, overambitious ghouls who had the audacity to even try.

normal-eyed, she stares him down as she withdraws her hand, fingers wrapped around the still-beating organ. the rinkaku slinks out of his head until its out of sight, letting his body fall to the ground with a loud thump. 

they never learn.

teeth sinking into the heart, she drags the body to a corner of the alley for later then perches herself atop a wall. it doesn’t take long for her solitude to go interrupted, this time by a familiar presence. yura takes another bite, blood trailing down her arm as her lips curl into a smirk.

“back again so soon?”

younghoon loved winter

he doesn’t hate the cold- he really doesn’t. but when the wind is blowing almost forty miles per hour and your destination is a secluded mountain with a cable-car as the only access, he finds herself reconsidering his previous fondness for snowy days. 

“so much for a white christmas.” he grumbles as he steps out of the cable car, tucking the thick wool scarf higher to his nose. he’s not about to lose any limb today, especially to something like a frostbite. demons and ghouls have tried that for years now and have yet to succeed. nature will have to stand in line.

in all honesty, younghoon would’ve never guessed that his job would get him so far away from home. he has had plans to visit canada before, but none has anything to do with investigating some mysterious disappearances in a secluded mountain in alberta. not to mention the possibilities of not coming out alive...

he fishes out his notebook from the pocket of his coat. he’d usually rely on gps to direct them to their destination, but the reception already disagreed with him by the time he reached the cable station on the base of the mountain. they just have to do things the good ol’ fashioned way.

although, his partner would probably disagree.

“sejoo, let’s go. it’s almost dark,” younghoon turns around to face the shorter male, cocking his head towards the pathway before him. “i’m not getting stuck outside in the middle of this weather, and the snow is getting real deep.”

i could have sworn i saw fireworks from your house last night, as the lights flickered and they failed i had it all figured out. @youngnovas​ / jiahn & yejin / park, 11:45 pm.

the night’s still too cold for denim, but that’s still all jiahn’s got wrapped around his shoulders. a sweatshirt tucked underneath, the hood dragged up over his head. still doesn’t compare to his winter coat, but he’d set that on fire last week and hid the smoldering scraps away from his parents. he’s already treading thin ice with them, and he doesn’t want to push it by bringing it up. asking them for a new one. his powers don’t lend well to that trek. he can all but feel his life melting underfoot with each sluggishly hesitant step. so he sniffs against the cold, occasionally lets sparks crackle out from his fingertips when they start to go numb. stupid, but who ever said teenage boys were smart?

he sits, legs slung over the edge of the plastic bridge of the playscape he’s currently occupying. the park empty now, closer to midnight than noon. jiahn shouldn’t be out either, really. but he is. because he’s still trying to figure all of this powers shit out, and yejin’s the only other person who seems to be saddled with the same fate. only, parents seem to all be slanting suspicious sorts of glances at him lately. so they’re stuck to creeping out at night. yejin probably has it easier than him, at least. the running part. just shiver out of existence and reappear again. 

far less conspicuous than jiahn and his wayward powers, seem to be ushered in by emotions. a volatile uprising to his life (which, by the way, had been perfectly nice beforehand, he hadn’t asked for this). 

she does it now. one minute he’s staring at the edge of a gs25, and the next he has a face-full of yejin. he startles. he always startles. it’s impossible not to. a fucking ghost-like terror to the whole thing. spits out a swear like that might calm the shiver of heart. it doesn’t, but it still makes him feel a little better. “do you still think that’s funny? really? fuck.” he huffs out, though it sounds more like a joke as he swings out a leg, skims her thigh with the toe of a beaten-down sneaker. “did you at least bother to ask ‘em why they’re banning me?” jiahn asks next, voice only mildly sulky. lifts a hand to fit the words ‘banning me’ in between air quotes as he says them.

what’s that behind you?

old habits die hard.

by that, we mean the young shaman’s habit of caring too much. turning a blind eye to upcoming bad fortunes on strangers’ lives has never been one of his best know-how’s. as if he hasn’t been called a lunatic a hundred too many times, he peers over and on the spirits that shadow them– always, always finding himself wanting to voice what his sixth sense is warning him. 

“i– can i just say, i don’t think you should go that way?” 

he ends up giving into at least two out of five of his internal debates on the daily.

this particular spirit of the dead is hell-bent on taking this girl down and to the underworld. her life-line is dim, almost like a wavering candle light in the way she looks like she’s ready to step on over to the flip side any second. inwoo sidesteps all too adeptly as the spirit engages, his eyes adamant on keeping that pole intact and on the ground. just not on her.

“it’s a construction site down this way. i tried taking the same route last time and it was blocked off–” he tries his best to come up with reasons, any, so she doesn’t fall flat and dead on the ground in the next few minutes. but as is his (or her) luck, this poltergeist is an irritable one. evidently unhappy with inwoo having stepped into its frame-up, it leads her right under the crumbling cement structure (held up poorly with some run-down metal poles.) and inwoo, at the last split second– dashes as if his life depends on it before propelling her down and away from the chunk of plaster. 

 she’s on the ground, so is he, and now this is the hard part.

“not to sound creepy, but– haven’t these things been happening to you more than they should? like, on a regular basis?”

July 2012 Namhae, South Gyeongsang

It’s a scenic drive along Namhae’s cerulean coastline, sweep of hills and winding interstates finally plateauing—the land opens up and gives way to a sparkling sea. Here, the sky seems wider. Their rental Kia traverses a short two-kilometer stretch, crawls leisurely past rice paddy and farmhouse, street dog and fruit-bearing grandmother. Kyungmin feels the tell-tale bump of gravel under the tires. When he squints, he sees it: the signboard to their lodging, lovingly slathered in swishes of white paint: One Dream Pension.

Yujae is quick on his feet and hops out of the driver’s seat before Kyungmin so much as pulls out their reservation, printed and stapled neat at the top left corner. He greets the front desk, procures their keys, and leads the way to their unit, a canary yellow, southern-facing cottage. They take five to settle, turning on the air-conditioning and sinking into the sofas. Kyungmin’s eyes drift towards the clock in the room. It’s taken the form of a mischievous-looking striped cat, curved tail swishing back and forth for every second tick-tocked by. The blinds are closed for some reason, slats of orange sunlight patterning Yujae’s sweating face in bold stripes.

Looks like the clock, Kyungmin smiles, giving Yujae’s cheeks an insistent push of the finger before he bolts upward. “Didn’t you want to go swimming?” He asks, all matter-of-fact and quirk of the brow slinking towards the kitchen counters. On top of the island, their lumpy cooler—he pulls out a single can of beer, keeping his eyes trained on Yujae, who remains splayed on the couch. The leather croaks beneath Yujae’s body with stunning clarity as he stirs. “Get changed before you become one with the sofa,” Kyungmin peels back the tin, krrrsch, and chugs. A third of the can swishes in his belly now. “Before I finish the can.”

TITANS, (AND H.I.V.E.) GO!

mastermind(s) @youngnovas​ genre(s) action, superhoes, dc. premise based on teen titans. the titans are back at it again to protect jump city! bad guys every day and even worst, bad roommates to deal with. the whole crew lives in titans tower (located in sunny california) and as of late has been dealing with new member additions as well as the reappearance of the H.I.V.E. tearing up downtown. yikes! characters canons & oc.

TITANS

robin / boy genius here can beat you in a fight in every single fighting style known to man. and his tech? simple, deadly and effective. literally the definition of robin (and batman) itself. the leader of the team. very strict and unyielding with his decisions. always an avid supporter of training, training, and more training. stick in the mud. it’s not that he hates fun but that he has too much to do to have any fun. scolds beast boy and cyborg all the time. soft spot for starfire. lost to jinx once (because she’s a cheat) and is still sore about it. getting increasingly stressed these days, not sure how vantablack keeps getting in the tower. starfire / alien princess that can fly and shoot bright green energy from her hands and eyes. also has super strength. but supposedly all her powers depends on her ability to be happy/content and in tune with her emotions. literally a complete opposite of raven, but they’re good friends anyway. still trying to get used to earth’s traditions. trying hard to make friends with the new recruits, even the grumpy one (but she keeps saying things like “don’t worry! you didn’t fail! you’re just not good enough yet, welcome to the team :D”) (taken by @rackandrouge)

raven / demon? human? both. raven’s got a long list of capabilities but the majority seems to lie in the control of shadows, telekinesis, meditating, and having a patience of a lifetime to not wring beast boy or cyborg’s neck yet. not much if known about her bg among the titans, she’s not a sharer. admittedly good friends with starfire. not sure why the new recruits won’t look her in the eye though. cyborg / half cyborg, half man. also the titans’ go-to repair/tech man. friendly, protective over his friends, outgoing, cool, loving. hates the h.i.v.e. (gizmo especially) like no tomorrow. pretty sure one of them blew up his pizza joint. besties with beast boy, also often bickers (it’s a bro thing) with him though. bumps egos with robin badly sometimes. beast boy / animal morphing. everything he morphs into green though, idk. one of the youngest on the team. was abandoned on the streets and basically one of robin’s oldest friends as he took him in. total glutton. clingy. best bros with cyborg. impulsive and knows it! (taken by @youngnovas)

new recruit (1) / oc, only recruit to make it through robin’s tedious obstacle course (and expectations). giddy, nervous. clumsy but capable. scared of raven but that’s because of all the rumors they’ve heard. power utp. (taken by @yahang) 

new recruit (2) / oc, sidekick (don’t call them sidekick) to a famous superhero (utp) in another city. only dumped here because they’re too considered “too green” by said hero. hates it. wish cyborg and beast boy would shut up about it. power utp.

H.I.V.E

all graduates (or current students) of the hive academy (yes an academy for young villains), their assignment is to take down the titans. current “hq” is in some dingy flat above a bbq place (man when i tell you a supervillain’s life is not easy…)

jinx / uses a form of magic that materializes in a pink/purple of energy, notoriously bad luck energy (but it’s just her manipulating probabilities). unofficial leader but it’s more like babysitting at this point. doesn’t really want to be here, but doesn’t have anywhere to go. always in perpetual bad moods. also into pulling petty crimes/pranks with gizmo. gizmo / no powers, just brains, brains, brains. nasty attitude, extensive collection of high-tech weapons. makes his own tech and also some enhancers for the team. also insanely good at sniping. doer of petty crimes. super nosy, loves sticking his nose in everyone’s business. bossing the new additions around like it’s nbd. likes to pair up with mammoth since he’s the easiest to order around out of the group. also they pig out together. a lot. mammoth / the big and bad. super strength (currently unmatched), durability and the works. (x) eats a lot and i mean a lot. always off trying to grab a bite before or during their little excursions. still pissed off his favorite pizza place is gone. eats downstairs often because of the discount (free if you scare the right waiter, bitch) lowkey scared of jinx after the time she jinxed (pun intended) him for a whole day.

vertigo / literally makes the world spin, that’s her power. (x) new on the team, seems to think she’s all that (bc 100% can bring you to your knees). ranked first in every class tbt H.I.V.E so she’s got a chip on her shoulder. doesn’t like jinx, treats gizmo like a puppy.

vantablack / can transform into shadows, blend in, mold attacks, and travel through them. (x) bit on the older side. doesn’t really take orders well. always sneaks into titans tower (and gets kicked out) like its nbd. it’s funny. finds starfire interesting (i mean alien? fr? cmon). “what the hell are you doing?”

in all honesty, raven can’t picture herself ever doing something like that. that as in, some really convoluted routine of shuffling and gesticulating. it’s harder than she makes it out to be, and certainly harder than how beast boy is effortlessly executing it. an admirable feat that has her wondering just how long he spent on learning that routine when he could’ve been learning something more contributive to the team.

but that’s what makes him so well-liked among the new recruits, she supposes, whereas she somehow scares them. this fear is a little incomprehensible to her, unsure of where exactly it stems from. starfire mentioned something about her not being exactly receptive to the newbies, let alone anyone in general, but she’s sure that can’t possibly be it.

in the end, she’ll have to get along with them no matter what. they’re a team. besides, if she could handle cy and beast boy, she could certainly take them on. it’s just a matter of them letting her.

that is how she finds herself seeking help from b.b. sure, she’s beginning to regret it, but is there anything else she can do? so she tries, even if she doesn’t have a single dancing bone in her body. it takes her exactly two tries to lose motivation. “i give up.” her tone is flat when she folds her arms across her chest. “can’t you teach me something easier? like that—” an attempt to recreate a simpler dance she’s seen him do. “thing.”

Early September, 2018 Seocho-gu, Seoul

The ceremony has ended, the pictures have been taken, everyone is trickling out of the ballroom, filtering back into the hotel lobby. Out here in my cabernet-induced vertigo, the dizzying array of flower wreaths look more like pinwheels in the wind. It’s time to get some fresh air. 

In my hands: a bundle of my own flowers, plucked from the table centerpiece and off the wedding runway. Always such a shame that the unpicked flowers go straight into the dump—I’ve compensated for the guilt by overshooting. A ranunculus bud knocks into the lens of my glasses and I flinch backwards. 

Up ahead, the waitstaff. I hand over the bundle, and a petite young woman wraps and ties it with brown wax paper and rawhide string. “Thank you,” I say, and take the first set of doors I see leading to the patio.

mastermind(s) @youngnovas genre(s) action, crime, crack premise based off 2018′s extreme job, plot revolves around a team of detectives (infamous for their tendencies to wreck and cause damages as well as being generally messy) that inevitably decides to invest in a chicken shop for an undercover drug-bust. (plot drops to follow…unless you’ve already watched the movie!) characters skeletons only

go — the one in charge. the mastermind behind it all. like the rest of his team, he’s determined and capable but goes about it in all the wrong ways possible. it’s his idea to invest in the shop. though it is him + the jaehoon’s savings that is able to make it happen. currently considering keeping the business running till he can make his fund back. jang — quick tempered, poor cook, she’s not allowed anywhere near the kitchen that’s why she works the cashier and what not. finds it insulting though, doesn’t think her food is that bad. the type to put her all in everything, hence being so invested in the restaurant. cousins with jaehoon. messy lifestyle. bickers constantly with ma. yungho — quite possibly the only one that still remembers they’re cops. refuses to pitch in at the restaurant, instead sits in his car monitoring the building across from the shop. sick of fried chicken by now. wants to throw up at the smell of oil. why is no one helping seriously :( (taken by @undergvndking)

ma — handed the job because his chicken was…the least horrifying. surprisingly cooks pretty well. uses his family’s secret recipe. loves wearing track suits. keeps everything prim and proper. don’t touch his hair. gets into squabbles with jang all the time but she’s the one always getting violent. jaehoon — newest to the team. a total wide eyed baby. does anything he’s told with limitless enthusiasm. gullible for a cop. super excited to make his first arrest. cousins with jang, but begged her not to tell anyone so they don’t think he made detective with “connections”. recently gave up his marital savings to invest in the shop and is now in hot waters with his girlfriend. 23:09 Jung-gu, Seoul

Like any well-meaning and well-to-do coworker ready to call it a night, it’s a simple formality. Two cleanly plucked brows divoted with all the makings of concern that she can muster in the second it takes for her to splay one arm languidly over his cubicle wall while the other clasps tight onto the handles of her taupe Birkin, Yebin sends her regards.

“Don’t stay up too late, you two,” She sing-songs, lips puckering towards the next cubicle over where Youngdeok slaves away to the slow stream of perspiration of his fifth iced coffee. In front of her, there is Junho. Junho, gray sunken eyes trained on the screen and unflinching. Junho, punching digits at eleven like usual.

Usual?

And how would she know.

It occurs to her then. Junho’s been staying extra late nights for the past two weeks, or at least later than her. Normally Yebin was out the door by seven, eight at the latest. But Subin had left behind two month’s worth of leads after taking maternal leave, and she’d been playing catch up on the night owl shift ever since—and had therefore taken note of Junho’s otherwise phantom presence. (Youngdeok, meanwhile, was a given; a self-effacing, caffeine-jittering fixture of dawn.)

“These aren’t the numbers i threw at you today, are they?” She leans in, eyes widening... and quickly narrowing. He should have sent them hours ago, when she’d actually needed them. The presentation was over—this deliverable was as good as garbage now. “So sorry about that, by the way, for putting you on the spot on such short notice. But seriously, there’s no rush.” Anymore. “Save it for Monday morning!” So you at least don’t fuck up the math. “You should go home. Or go out. It’s the weekend!”

it’s not

The truth was that despite every waking moment spent together being… excruciatingly comfortable, comfortability did not sit comfortably with Sangheon. It was the sort of mind-numbing ease that let him curl all too languidly into Hwanmo’s lap, humming a made-up tune from somewhere low in his throat before the caress of fingers at his nape and the sound of fading traffic eventually lulled him to sleep. He’d doze thinking nothing, and wake up in the lazy afternoon to much of the same, maybe his nose in Sangheon’s hair, maybe his feet shuffling on kitchen linoleum as he opened up packets of porridge from the CU next door. One or the other, and introspection be damned, the sameness made Sangheon antsy, anxieties suddenly kicked into overdrive even without Hwanmo’s instant coffee.

The others didn’t have a clue. Their ignorance, at the very least initially, provided some measure of excitement to an otherwise suffocatingly domestic past two months. Sangheon had taken great pride in keeping potential couple names strictly between the two of them. He mouths them from a distance, from a plush booth where a just-promoted VP with a blunt lob haircut squeezes his knees and clinks their glasses together. He very briefly considers yelling one of them out in lieu of the standard bottom’s up. He has no clue why he’s itching to get the names out in the open now. What the point of keeping everything so low-key was when he’d never kept his personal affairs boxed away before but then again he’d never been with anyone longer than three weeks and yet here they were, tables apart but creeping closer still to their momentous three-month mark together and Hwanmo hadn’t—hasn’t—so much as laid a finger on him.

“Mo-ya.” Sangheon bites down on his lip. They’re in the changing rooms now. Hwanmo is shrugging off a dress shirt as Sangheon steps toes first out of his slacks. He hasn’t thought this through, and it shows in the way he avoids Hwanmo’s gaze altogether when he asks, imperceptibly, “Is this working?”

DIE TRYING

when her instinct tells her to run, she runs.

perhaps it is some sort of a defense mechanism built specifically for her, the wallflower of her own world. she knows to shut up when her mother starts raising her voice on the dining table, how to escape unnoticed by the girls from her class after she stood up to their vicious comments, where to hide when things go bad. and it’s been nothing but helpful for the past few years.

but nothing would’ve prepared her for this. this, is being chosen to be the participant of this year’s program. to murder all of her classmates and stay alive for the next three days until there’s no one left.

kiyomi may not get along with her classmates, but she doesn’t hate them enough to commit murder.

( besides, some of them is actually pretty decent human beings )

so she does what she’s best at; run.

and that’s how she got herself here, in the middle of the woods hidden behind a wall of thick bushes. the content of her daypack scattered upon the wild grass as she gobbles up the stale bread she found inside the bag. there’s a switchblade lying next to her but kiyomi still has no idea what to do with it other than for cutting her bread into pieces.

or at least, until she hears the sound of leaves rustling on the spot behind her.

her first instinct is to gather her things as quietly as possible, in case she needs to make a run for it and has no time to pack up. then she curls into herself with switchblade held tightly in her trembling hands, hoping whoever made that noise goes away as quickly as they came.
