It's been a decade since it aired, so I think we have to admit he's not the young pope anymore

in the young pope. can you imagine the affect on gay men alone if it was revealed that the pope looked like THIS. two thousand years of conflict between queer men and the catholic church suddenly becomes much more complicated

I just started The Young Pope and... uhm... it's very beautiful visually and very bizarre and I think my ex-catholic ass is going to appreciate it a lot. I'm only about 20 minutes in and I'm already equal parts confused and fascinated. Also, this is my first time watching anything by Paolo Sorrentino, so make of that what you will.

What can I already say is Jude Law is aging incredibly gracefully, the way he moves is stunning (although it's obvious to me that every gesture was heavily micromanaged and directed by Sorrentino) and his character is aggressively American.

Rooms-katholicisme: hip 'n happening!

Toen deze serie uit 2016 in de eindeloze reeksen aanbevelingen voorbijkwam, wist ik niet goed wat ik me erbij moest voorstellen. Afgaande op de titel en het wat duister ogende plaatje, ging ik uit van een sinister, misschien wel zelfs demonisch verhaal over een nieuwe paus. Ik bleek ernaast te zitten.

The Young Pope (op HBO) gaat inderdaad over een nieuwe paus, maar met satan heeft het weinig te doen. Gelukkig maar. Ja, de serie schetst in het prille begin wel goed de scepsis en onzekerheid over de nieuwe leider van de Room-Katholieke kerk bij de volgers en roept ook vele vraagtekens bij de kijker op over met wat voor man we hier te maken hebben. Maar zoals voor veel dingen in het leven geldt: niet alles is wat het aanvankelijk lijkt.

Na de laatste aflevering bekeken te hebben, is voor mij duidelijk dat het hier gaat om een topserie. Perfectie bereikt The Young Pope echter bij lange na niet, daarvoor rammelt het script te veel, heeft de serie soms te veel moeite tempo erin te houden en mist het de souplesse en de steracteurs van wat het beste uit Hollywood te bieden heeft. - Ja, dat laatste kan ook juist een reden zijn om deze vertelling wel te gaan kijken...

The Young Pope is een Europese productie gestoeld op Italiaanse leest. Dat betekent een ander soort uitwerking ten opzichte van de Triple A-titels die op de streamingdiensten verschijnen. Het geheel kent een andere vibe: hier tellen sfeer en conversaties misschien meer dan in de verhaal- en spektakelgedreven Amerikaanse producties. Toch is Hollywood nooit ver weg; de serie wordt gedragen door de Britse acteur Jude Law, bekend van verschillende wereldwijde kaskrakers en internationale awards. Hoewel we weinig andere grote namen zien, springt voor mij de sullige, maar toch ook slinkse kardinaal-secretaris Voiello eruit. Hoe hij enerzijds probeert hoogte en respect te krijgen van paus Law/Pius XII, maar anderzijds machtspelletjes speelt en over lijken kan gaan, dat wordt door acteur Silvio Orlando geweldig gedaan. (Die moedervlek/wrat is trouwens niet echt, geen zorgen.)

Zoals gezegd stokt af en toe het tempo en kon het verhaal wat strakker verteld worden. Maar dat maakt het plezier van het kijken naar The Young Pope er niet minder om. De decors en beelden zijn een lust voor het oog, het acteerwerk van met name Law & Orlando is hoogstaand en de serie zet je aan het denken. Want is de verrassend conservatieve paus echt zo ouderwets als zijn standpunten suggereren? Brokkelt de relevantie van de kerk in de huidige tijd af of zouden we tegenwoordig juist meer behoefte hebben aan een instituut dat draait om devotie, een heilig schrift en mystiek? Op veel momenten deed de fictieve paus mij denken aan de publicaties van Omdenken, bekend van onder meer de scheurkalender. Kritisch en prikkelend tegelijkertijd.

Nog een laatste reden om deze meesterserie aan te bevelen: The Young Pope schetst een buitengewoon goed (en authentiek?) beeld van het reilen en zeilen van Vaticaanstad. Want wat doen ze daar nu de hele dag? Wie lopen er rond? Van welke rituelen is er sprake en welke belangen spelen er allemaal? Wat dat betreft ook nog een beetje leerzaam. Helemaal goed. Nu alweer zin in Pasen en het tweede seizoen (The New Pope)!
