LITERALLY this is whats so frustrating abt it is like. if the unpaid version was just. usable and basic i would be absolutely happy to pay for a premium that actually just gave me more features, like ive paid for PainttoolSAI multiple times because the unpaid version is already super good and the paid one just gets better (and iirc its also generally a one time fee, i only bought it twice bc i switched computers and couldnt figure out if there was a way to transfer it lol). versus something like youtube or tumblr or yknow literally any other site rn, where the unpaid version DID originally include every feature and instead of adding more they just. started chipping away at every base level feature bit by bit to force all their unpaid users to switch in order to make the site useable again. and that to me is such an asshole move that im immediately catapulted into "oh ok fuck you then im never giving you a single goddamn cent no matter how hard you try." and especially with this bullshit where theyre like "hello premium users! fun new update umm so you know how you gave us money to not see ads and stuff? well we want some more money so now theres multiple tiers of premium, and the one youre on has ads again now!:) we know this is probably frustrating so to ease the transition here's a link to the page where you can upgrade your premium tier!:) its only $30 more a month isnt that such a cool deal?:)))!" like. idc if its legal the youtube and netflix ceos should go to jail simply for how much of an asshole move that is
love when ppl defend the aggressive monetization of the internet with "what, do you just expect it to be free and them not make a profit???" like. yeah that would be really nice actually i would love that:)! thanks for asking
#hope its ok i used ur tags as a jumping off point thats just the part that annoys me the most is that like.#instead of adding in thing to give users a reason to /want/ an upgrade#theyre deliberately making the sites as unusable as possible to make users /need/ premium#and im just like. this is kidz bop extortion hello#also they should be legally required to put a thing on their site showing how many ads translates to the cost of#premium and then if you see that many. you should get premium. because the site has made that same amount#of money off of you because of it. and yet here we are#like why is modern day youtube somehow worse than some shitty mobile game that's like 'watch three#ads and go ad free for 20 mins!'#im rambling now sorry tldr i agree LWNRKSBFJD

"I'm Quitting YouTube", but I never did anything on my channel and it's just because their ad placement is scum
#random ramblings#I'm not buying Premium for an experience we used to have for free#the ads are poorly placed#they kill my vibe to listen to a specific song#there are ads longer than the videos#and the price for one user is near the costs of other streaming services that support the full family#ItemLabel has the only YouTube ads I can tolerate

I really hate how ads have taken over the internet. On one hand, I know that hosting a website costs money, right? And ad revenue is one of the simplest ways for free-to-use websites to cover their operating costs.
My question is-- and I would genuinely love an answer-- is this ever going to stop? Tumblr ran for a long time without ads. So did Youtube. I know that the cost of hosting so much media has gone up, but there are a lot of users on these websites that make the content that drives people to use the service that don't see any of the money generated by this revenue. On Youtube, there's at least a way for creators to make some money from what they do. For most, it isn't much, but the opportunity is there. On Tumblr, well... the ability to convert the visibility of my blog into any financial gain practically nonexistent, though they did at one point promise that users would be able to make money from ads run on their blogs (whatever happened to that, Staff?).
"You can pay to avoid seeing ads!" Tumblr says, as if the views on my main blog alone over the past few years have not generated more than enough ad revenue to cover the price they're asking me to pay, the person who is actively making content that brings eyes to their ads.
I'm not mad at Tumblr for hosting ads. I get that it has to happen because it's the easiest way to keep the site free, and honestly, I imagine Tumblr's staunch opposition to monetization has been a real obstacle for the team building Tumblr. But at the same time, it feels like yet another small concession in the usability of the site. I'm tired of ads that auto-play with blaring audio while I'm scrolling. I'm tired of adds that, if I touch them while trying to scroll past them, take me to an external site. Outside of tumblr, I'm tired of looking for information online only to get a webpage that's 95% ads and otherwise illegible. Hell, I recently got an ad on Discord. Was it unobtrusive? Maybe. But it was there, for the first time, and I know that won't be the end.
I know the first reply I'm going to get on this is "use adblock", and yes, that's a solution, but think about how much the landscape for media has changed in just ten years.
Popular forums are basically gone outside of reddit.
Youtube, without Red, is ad hell. You can't watch more than 3-4 minutes of video without getting sent to marketing hell.
Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter-- it's terrible. I firmly believe they've manufactured a worse experience through the implementation of ads to convince you to buy into their premium services.
Just Check out this video of Penguinz0 trying to watch a video on a third-party site.
There's discussion of putting ads into video games.
Remember when games didn't include micro-transactions? Blizzard is charging $70 for one mythic skin. You could almost buy Overwatch 1 twice-over at that price-point.
Influencers make a living by making their lives into advertisements.
Youtube has retaliated against users using ad-block on non-chrome browsers by artificially inflating the load times of it's videos.
What can we do about this? I imagine companies see it as an infinite money hack; users can't stop companies from hosting ads, and the action they could take to voice their displeasure-- leaving the site, using other competitive services-- has been all but obliterated thanks to the homogeneity of popular social media outlets. If someone is truly so incensed about ads, well-- it isn't like they have to engage with them, right? They can enroll in a cheap, auto-renewing service to get rid of ads entirely. Well, wait, the price of premium might just have to go up. Don't worry, it's auto-renewing! You won't even notice it. Oh, no, it's got to go up again, you won't even notice it.
There's no incentive for them to cap this behavior, and no way for us as users to pressure them to do so. We create these spaces; we fill them with color, art, activism, community, and the companies that ride on the tailcoat of the spaces we create tell us to give them more. What comes next?

ninjamuffin newgrounds post!
tl;dr
fuck ads!! use adblocker whenever you can!!
the crew tries to make fnf as ad-free as possible, not just the game but where you download it- it's why it's on itch/newgrounds and not anywhere that offers ad revenue
that being said, fnf mobile will likely have a free version which... will have ads. they will try not to make the ads too obnoxious
(there will be an ad-free paid version too!)
extra note from me, not the post: if you're an android user you totally shouldn't use youtube revanced and purpletv or anything for mobile youtube and twitch adblockers. it would be such a hindrance to the advertisers. ha ha
full post copied below ⬇️
greetings and merry xmas newgrounds
on my brain for a very long time has been advertisements. Something about ads that stick in my brain ever since I came across this little thing from Lichess.
In due time, unfortunately this post will become a bit hypocritical, as we will eventually publish FNF onto mobile, and that will very likely have a free ad supported version. Hopefully that doesn't undermine my thoughts too much, however FNF is more than just me and my brain! Not everything I say goes in terms of FNF decisions! So with all that being said, let me begin shouting about everything I hate about ads.
I use adblocker on everything, and you should too. UBlock Origin has been my reliable go to. Online ads are especially an insidious breed. I'll try not to be some tinfoil hat, but I do often wonder what the internet would look like if the online ad model *wasn't* fruitful back in the early days of the internet. Would Facebook, Google, etc. have an arms race to the bottom to get infinite amounts of data on every single person ever? Would social media algorithms optimize for a different experience other than *spend as much time as possible on our site*? Ads have existed before Youtube, Google, internet though. They exist on TV, on subways and buses, on radio, in newspapers. I think for the most part my deep hatred of ads is for online kind, I do think there can be "irl" ads that I find very unpleasant. Going on a subway or sitting at a bus stop, I think people deserve more dignity from their city public transit than to have something sold to them! I don't think an ad free life should be only reserved for those who can pay for spotify premium, youtube red, etc. I think everyone should be entitled to that DIGNITY.
X (the everything app, formerly Twitter ) has a Premium subscription that costs 10$/month (CAD), and they will only give you *half* the ads in your feed. How generous of them. I will be dramatic, and say that I look at ads with disgust. I hope to think I'm somewhat justified, as most ads look like dogshit, and are pretty worthless.
For a very long time (and currently, as of writing/posting) FNF has been entirely ad free. We did stand up to putting it on other web portals that offer ads and ad payments/rev share, because we do somewhat want to be part of the change we'd like to see in the world. We want to believe in a world where someone can put out a free game on itch/newgrounds, and have the development be supported purely off donations (which FNF was supported by that in the early days / first 6 months of development!). We definitely could have made much MUCH more money if we put FNF on websites that offer ad rev share, but we didn't, and I hope that doesn't fall on deaf ears.
However we do promote our own things from within the game, Kickstarter, merch, etc. I suppose I'm less upset or even thinking about that, I think there's a big difference if we had a lil Kickstarter trailer in-game that played, opposed to having an in-game advertisement for some fuckass mobile game or some cosmetics or somethin. We specifically are still curating what we are putting in the game with our lil links to merch, kickstarter, etc.
We also provide the soundtrack on Spotify / streaming services, which do indeed get money from ads. I think I'm so detatched from Spotify ads and being angry at them, since I've been spotify premium user even at the brokest poorest in my life... i need them album downloads!!! I do think that's an aspect where there is an adfree alternative, which is Bandcmap, where you can listen to the FNF OST as much as you want, and if you pay some coin, you can download it in high quality!
My thoughts on FNF mobile with ads is that they will make me very unhappy and deeply sad. I do sincerely apologize to those of you who would be unable to play FNF on anything other than a mobile device, and aren't able to get the full mobile version, so you become punished with ads. We do hope to not be obnoxious with mobile ads. If you have a computer, even a shitty busted one that runs slow, I personally hope you end up compiling the mobile version yourself to get past ads. The thought of that lets me rest easier just a little bit. The FNF will be proudly open source forever.
There will also be a paid version of FNF mobile, that will have no ads. Pay for that one if you please.

I have said it before and i don't care how many youtubers advertise hello fresh or hungryroot to make a living
meal subscription services are not worth it.
Not a single one of them is actually cheaper in the long term than planning and buying your own groceries.
many of them have initial discounts to sell you the service and then hope you are just too busy or too tired to unsubscribe. almost ALL people who sign up for a meal plan will unsubscribe within the first year because they were only there to access those early discounts BECAUSE THEY NEEDED CHEAPER FOOD IMMEDIATELY.
Your normal grocery store probably does have a few dark patterns but not nearly as many as even the 'nicest' meal subscription service.
There are articles out there like "I did the math and the groceries and meal services are the same price mostly!" but if you pay attention, there are massive holes in their thinking:
the meals or plans that track closest to grocery store prices are ones that adhere to special diets. Eating vegan, keto, etc. can be more pricey to shop for. This is a known part of the strategy for meal kits and delivery services-- they can't compete with the price of typical groceries, but just like some people will shop at an expensive Health Food store, others will be willing to pay a premium for luxury or diet-specific products. And chances are if you're a regular person keeping a special diet with a limited amount of disposable income you probably have already made compromises for your budget and don't need a for-profit service to pry away that money you're trying to save.
These articles frame, 'you don't have to buy oil, seasonings, vinegar, or staple ingredients' as a cost saving or even food waste saving measure... but that's also true if you just eat regular TV dinners from the grocery store freezer aisle, many of which offer the same or better prices per serving. But really, is this not just a grocery shopping version of 'Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness'? Exploitation of those who can't invest in the cost of things upfront results in poor people spending more money for worse outcomes?
If I can't make a restaurant's exact same fish sandwich for the same price, I can just make a chicken sandwich or a grilled portobello. Or buy a box of frozen dumplings. Saving money on Grilled Trout Over Wild Rice shipped to my door makes no sense when I simply wouldn't choose to cook something like that without a special reason.
if these meal kits and delivery plan services really WERE cheaper than groceries, grocery stores would be losing money to them and they're mostly losing money to people buying less food in general.

At the end of January, clips from a film about the housing market in Russian-occupied Mariupol began circulating on TikTok and X (formerly Twitter). After the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian army held Mariupol under siege for 85 days, all the while relentlessly pummeling the city with missile and air strikes. Mariupol was effectively reduced to rubble, and no one knows how many lives were lost — though some estimates place the number as high as 100,000. As soon as the Russian authorities had captured the city, they set about rebuilding it and erasing any trace of war crimes.
The film, titled “Shocking Prices for Apartments in Mariupol — Millions for Ruins” was released in November on the YouTube channel “Mirnyie” (the plural form of “peaceful” in Russian and the first part of “peaceful inhabitants,” a Russian term used to distinguish non-combatants from military personnel in conflict zones). The Mirnyie project is led by “war correspondent” Regina Orekhova, a journalist from the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. In 2022, she received a special award from the Russian Union of Journalists for “courage in fulfilling journalistic duty.”
The Mirnyie project, as one might surmise from its name, explores the lives of ordinary people in the conflict zone. “These are the stories of people who found themselves caught in the crossfire — some left, while others stayed. [We share] their experiences, how they survive, and what they think about,” reads the description. Judging by the channel, Orekhova primarily works in Mariupol. Previous reports of hers cover topics such as Azovstal’s underground tunnels, the sea port, city maternity hospitals, and the drama theater, which was destroyed by a Russian airstrike while an estimated 1,000 civilians were sheltering there.
In the introduction to the half-hour film, Orekhova promises to answer the following questions: “How do you buy an apartment in Mariupol? Is it more profitable to invest in ‘ruins’ that you can resell once renovated? How do you rent commercial space for a business here and how much does it cost? What kinds of apartments are for sale and what determines the price?” Orekhova explains that in Mariupol, there are “damaged buildings” as well as “brand new and renovated ones.” “The real estate market is very unconventional. We’ve studied it in detail and we’ll tell you all about it,” she promises.
Orekhova speaks with three local realtors who show her properties for sale in different parts of the city. As it turns out, these are mostly half-destroyed apartments, hastily abandoned by residents who left all their personal belongings behind as they fled. However, even such properties, according to the realtors, are in high demand. In some cases, actual ruins, where just parts of the walls survived the bombings, are for sale. However, Russian construction companies will restore these buildings later for free, which significantly increases prices. There’s also the rare property untouched by war, or newly renovated apartments in restored buildings. Prices for these range from four to six million rubles (about $50,000-$66,000). Apartments in historic Stalin-era buildings in the center of Mariupol with surviving inner courtyards (i.e., enclosed parking), renovated entrances, and sea views are considered premium housing.
The film doesn’t explain why or, more importantly, by whom all the housing in Mariupol was destroyed. Realtors talk evasively about “all those events” or “military actions.” Orekhova asks how many real estate agencies are currently operating in Mariupol. “Well, there aren’t many surviving citizens per square meter, you could say, but they exist, of course,” a realtor answers.
Showing a damaged three-room apartment in the center of Mariupol, real estate agent Natalia remarks that “one shouldn’t focus on the consequences of what happened to the apartment but on the apartment’s potential.” There’s no electricity, the ceiling is leaking, and personal belongings, including toys and a highchair, lie strewn about — but the windows have been replaced. Natalia points out the “magnificent view” from the balcony. “These buildings have survived more than one war and, as you can see, are still standing,” Natalia says encouragingly. According to her, it would be too painful for the previous owners to come back and see their home like this, which is why they’re looking to sell the apartment in its current condition.
The realtors say that apartments are mostly bought by newcomers “from big Russia” and bemoan that locals can’t afford newly constructed housing. According to them, Russian authorities introduced a special two percent mortgage rate for people from the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” and “Luhansk People’s Republic” who have Russian citizenship. But locals can’t get approved because most aren’t officially employed — there are no jobs with decent salaries in Mariupol.
Luisa, the head of a real estate management company, explains that it’s virtually impossible for Mariupol residents to get an apartment without Russia’s help. She says they “can’t afford to buy back their old homes in Mariupol or to purchase new ones.” When new construction is put up where their destroyed homes used to be, the mortgage payments are out of reach. Luisa recalls how an apartment building in the center, leveled in the bombings, was cleared away to make room for new construction. Residents were offered housing somewhere on the outskirts as compensation, but they weren’t able to buy apartments in the new building being built on their property, even though they’re legally registered at the address.
Tatiana, another realtor, thinks everything in Mariupol is “getting back on track.” She says people are returning, “even those who didn’t plan to.” “The demand [for apartments] is very high, much higher than the supply,” Tatiana explains. “If an apartment is in poor condition but at a good price, it goes quickly. The interested buyers are mainly newcomers. People from Siberia are also eyeing our seaside breeze.”
Tatiana tells Orekhova that everything is “looking up” for the city:
Mariupol has never experienced such rapid growth. The city is developing before our eyes. It’s happening in such a way that even we don’t know where things will improve tomorrow, where slums will turn into upscale neighborhoods. Because our sky is blue. When I say this, everyone smiles, actually. But before, our sky used to be gray or brown, never blue. And now life is getting better; every cloud has a silver lining. You just don’t want to remember the military operations; you go numb. But when you see what’s happening in Mariupol — everything will be fine, everything will work out.

Okay so a quick update on my thinking towards Midnight Snap’s release strategy and I’m posting this to get some feedback on how this setup sounds for people. So here’s the idea:
- Episodes release on Friday evenings
- Of course, the flagship version of the show would be the video releases on YouTube.
- HOWEVER, there would also be an audio version of the show posted publicly (meaning no cost!!) on my Patreon
- Anyone could listen to the audio version, but patrons who actually subscribe to the page will get those audio posts in a private RSS feed they can add to whatever podcast app they use.
The reason I’m thinking of doing it this way rather than just distributing the show everywhere including Spotify with a normal podcast distributor is because I’m not totally confident on the legality of including uncut game audio in a podcast feed that way. I think it’s unlikely I’d be in any immediate hot water but it’s not something I want to overstep on if I can help it. This way, there’s still a free audio version available for people to listen to if they don’t have YT Premium or otherwise just can’t listen to the video version without keeping the screen on (the Patreon mobile app even has a pretty decent audio player built in) and those who go the extra mile of supporting for the show get the benefit of taking it to their main apps.
If this setup sounds agreeable to yall, please let me know! All feedback is welcome 🙏

I've been thinking a bit about animatronicswarehouse, Aaron Fetcher, and the ethics of putting rare or lost media behind a paywall. Last month, animatronicwarehouse launched a subscription service in which for $30 a month you can receive rare prints of CEI characters and shows. This is quite similar to Aaron Fetcher's premium video service where for $65 you have access to private videos of Aaron's current projects, old CEI show footage, stories, or just general updates. Aaron's service is pretty notorious for being needlessly complex for subscribers and easy for "thieves" to just screen record.
What really gets me though is the wealth of lost/rare footage sitting there collecting dust. Many of the digitized films from CEI's earliest shows sit behind a paywall. I wouldn't be as frustrated if premium subscribers received videos a month or two earlier than people watching the main channel to make both parties happy, however it seems that many won't be released for quite some time, will only have very short samples posted to lure more people to the premium service, or worst case, not seen at all.
Back to animatronicwarehouse. I'm concerned that this new service will become very similar to Aaron's service, albeit much less bloated. AW already knows Aaron, I mean, they did a good amount of work together to create one of, if not THE best RAE shows. They seem close and I'm worried that he'll start taking cues from Aaron. Yesterday he announced that he's selling posters of rare, high quality images of CEI shows that are presented as a must-have collector's item. Now, I don't really have a problem with this. My and other people's complaints start with the price. Most posters cost $120 with the most expensive costing $195 for a poster of the RAE that looks extremely similar to one that can easily be found on showbizpizza.com. You can also buy a $150 picture of the Hard Luck Bears that can be found online as well.
AW's Poster vs Photo posted by Hourly Rock a-fire Explosion (@HourlyRock) on twitter
As an advocate for archiving all forms of media for future generations, I cringe a little every time I see a rare photo with a huge watermark and blur on it or footage cut off and interrupted with a plug for a subscription service. It feels exploitive to make profit off the rarity of something, especially in a fandom where most people weren't alive when these early animatronics were up and running and can only recapture that magic through photos and video. Part of the reason animatronics are still popular is because new generations can look back at them or find current operating ones. I've seen people in YouTube comment sections from countries that never had Showbiz Pizzas or Chuck E. Cheese and yet they can enjoy it because videos and photos allow them to interact and enjoy these things. If we put the past behind a paywall, what will we have to discuss in the future?

The difference between College Humor and Watcher is that CH has a huge cast of people with mutiple shows releasing episodes extremely regularly. Not only just a huge cast of people but people the audience like. Sure there's the highlights like Brennan and such but people aren't gonna skip an episode of Game Changer just because Brennan isn't there. Watcher has only a few shows and they don't even put things out weekly. And other than Ryan and Shane no one really remembers who the other casts are. Even Steven is like meh to a lot of people, and you can tell just by looking at the views on their shows not including Ryan and Shane, the views are much MUCH lower than stuff like Ghost Files and Puppet History. You can even compare it to Roosterteeth who also started on a separate paid channel. Even they had a huge cast and though it got worst over the years they still kept their main cast front and center and made free content on YouTube for years and premium content was a separate show that didnt affect the youtube scene for a long time until 2020 where it all went downhill. Watcher is literally dropping YouTube altogether and moving to a paid platform and not touching YouTube ever again.
So Watcher:
1) doesn't make content regularly enough to be worth the high cost of their subscription
2) has only a handful of casts that would even interest people to move
3) is dropping YouTube entirely even though their audience was born from people watching them solely on YouTube
Of course people are gonna to be mad. These are the people who saw their potential during their buzzfeed unsolved days and gave them the support to make their own company as Watcher. Without these YouTube fans Watcher would not be where it is today. Dropping YouTube entirely and put on such an expensive paywall is just the dumbest narsarcistic thing they could think of when the economy is literally crumbling and their audience is made out of younger people. Idk who in Watcher thought this was a good idea, but clearly they need to learn from the mistakes of Roosterteeth and just don't. Trying to chase after College Humour when they both started in different ways is like trying to put a square into a circle hole. It's never gonna work, and if they try to force it, just like Roosterteeth, it's just gonna break all the work they did to build their company after so many years in a record amount of time.

I'm gonna be controversial and say I have absolutely no problem paying for Watcher on a separate site. YouTube is a hole that frequently promotes right wing shit and despite my incredibly careful curation and premium subscription it constantly tries to make me watch the WORST people, it also makes even the best people have to run horrible promos for bad companies as part of their videos because even getting the kind of viewing numbers that would keep a major TV show going doesn't pay the bills for a production company operating with relatively low overheads.
I get that it sucks but I am FINE (and I am extremely poor, I work a minimum wage job and have average adult who's nearly 40 life costs) with them saying they want to get the money direct not via being ripped off by one of the world's biggest companies profiting by making things worse. $5.99 a month is not much, $41.99 for a YEAR (currently) is fuck all. when sport paywalls itself behind something that's like £35 per month that's one thing but I already willingly pay for loads of creators on Patreon and Substack because I know damn well, as someone who used to earn my whole income in media it doesn't fucking pay you anything.

Actually let’s talk about watcher because so many of you are so unbelievably clueless about how money works it’s actually embarrassing.
You understand a company costs a LOT, right?
Today ONE FAMILY could live a comfortable but not a lavish lifestyle off of 70k a year. That’s for ONE FAMILY.
An entire business definitely can’t live off that. They’re getting approximately a few million. That’s not enough, not anymore.
And yeah, they do have a fan base. But it’s not exactly the most established. They didn’t start their own channel on YouTube like GMM or Smosh. They started at Buzzfeed and THEN moved to YouTube. They started late.
They started around Covid. And the economy has worsened so much since then. Of COURSE they’re struggling.
Also, hey, guys, it’s absolutely suicidal for them to put all of their own personal money into this business. Ryan and Shane are married. Their income helps support another human being too. What exactly do you want them to do? Go without food? Lose their HOMES?
Yeah, a business comes with sacrifices but, hey, guess what? That shouldn’t mean killing yourself in the process.
Also, hey, Steven owning a Tesla? Not a valid argument. He is ONE person, and frankly, we don’t know how long he saved or what he gave up in his personal life to have that. And FRANKLY, a Tesla isn’t exactly the most bizarre and out of this world car to own.
For a business they have to pay for the office, depending on who that’s through they may have separate bills for things like water, electricity, ect. They have to pay a salary for each staff member, they have to pay their guests. They have to pay for equipment, they have to pay for travel fees. They have to pay for food for staff when traveling, and so much more.
Also, hey, you guys understand how much we pay for everyday, right? How many of you have Netflix? Disney+? Spotify premium? How many of you pay for Starbucks more than once a week instead of making coffee at home?
And I’m not saying you should be ashamed of that, but just think for a moment. You don’t need all of that. Struggling for money means you can’t afford any of that to begin with. If you can that means you’re deciding how YOU want to spend your money and where, just like they are. Except unlike you, they’re making an investment for their COMPANY.
Also, guys, not a single content creator owes us their content or time. They’re giving it to us for free and that’s amazing. But it’s definitely hard on them. Especially when fans are so demanding. We have to pay for most things in life. It’s not all the surprising that we’d have to pay for watcher.
If anything it makes sense. They’re a show, these guys are basically actors. They provide entertainment like any other tv show. And hey, you have to pay SOMETHING AND SOMEONE to watch tv.
#whatoh back at it again#watcher#shane madej#ryan bergara#steven lim#also yall trying to put all the blame on an Asian guy is hella sus#anyways I bet most of you fully support someone like Taylor swift who’s a literal billionaire#like be so serious

LoA Book 1, Chapter 3
No, I didn’t give up on these. I just got really bad paralysis about having to be mean to a character until I remembered that I could just… restart the chapter 🤦
Anyhow, this chapter was Beau-centric so he’ll be the focus of today’s post!! This chapter also included the coworker relationship system so I have 2 playthrough screenshots: 1 where you’re mean/dismissive of Beau and another where you're nice/supportive of Beau ^^

First up is Beau’s reaction to the settlement Mrs Redwing was offered. The thing that struck me about these is how Beau is simultaneously grounded and out-there in his reaction.
On one hand, this is a very real, humorous way of remarking on the settlement amount. It’s clear Beau is sympathizing with Mrs Redwing here, or at least attempting to. Even more, it’s not hard to envision this reaction working with a different client!
In that vein, Beau’s mistake is forgetting the real medical costs Mrs Redwing was hoping to tackle with the settlement money. Mrs. Redwing says as much here:

Beau is a naturally sympathetic person. I think, out of everyone on the team (with MC as an exception depending on how you play them), Beau is the most sympathetic to a client’s feelings. Does he fumble? Yes, an example being here. But when compared to the rest of the lawyers, he is the only one to make an effort at consoling Mrs Redwing.
If you argue that Koenig was illegally surprising evidence, Martin will agree with you but Beau says this:

For me, this is telling. Both MC and Martin argue for conspiracy, but that’ll only make the acceptance harder on Mrs Redwing. Beau reminding us and Mrs Redwing that bad luck is an option, would allow Mrs Redwing to come to terms more quickly.
Next up, Beau’s reaction to you either telling him not to get in your way or thinking it’d be a great idea for y’all to team up.
This is his reaction to you dismissing him. Which. Fair. You did essentially tell him you don’t think highly of him. So, warranted reaction. What’s more exciting is if you react positively to working with Beau:
He’s genuinely surprised. He did not think you’d want to. He thinks you’re lying to him. Even he didn’t know what he could bring to the table. The right-hand screenshot makes that clear: Beau didn’t actually know what to bring to the table.
This raises an interesting question: how well does Beau know himself/his skills? While chapter 3 is a little to early to call, Beau does show a pattern of undervaluing himself. Despite his charisma, among other skills, he doesn’t seem to be aware that he has them.
Continuing in this angle, this scene (if you tell Beau it’s a dumb idea to go over the deposition recording) is also given new light:
Simply put, Beau is pretty good at reading between the lines. If you did accept this help, MC notes this later in the chapter (assuming you took the premium scene to talk to Martha, the housekeeper, during lunch):
There’s only two options here. 1) Without being aware of MC’s theory, Beau simply picked that up from the scant deposition <- which is insane work or 2) based off the ONE SINGULAR question MC asks:

Beau deduced what we were thinking which is also insane.
In summary, Beau shows another case of undervaluing himself and proves to be more sympathetic than is originally assumed. Pretty solid for a chapter.

Gigi’s Corner
Now, there isn’t much to say on Gigi this chapter. She rarely showed up 😢 But where she did did give me a couple thoughts so:
Gigi comes off as a little vengeful here. To be clear, so would I. I would also be vengeful. I would pay for a picture of Willow’s face when we nail her with wage theft. This is something I am NOT faulting Gigi for.
What I am bringing up, however, is this is the first time we’ve seen Gigi be vengeful. She is a rather chill person, she’s not even in this competition to win, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that she holds no strong opinions. To me, it seems pretty clear that she will search for Petty Revenge if you have an opinion she thinks is stupid (like thinking vaccines are poisons 😒)
Additionally, this scene:
Gigi may be just speaking in anger but, clearly, she knows how risky that is? Hoping that the jury just… ignores evidence counter to yours isn’t a winning legal strategy. Considering her choice of Adrian for the center of the lawsuit in chapter 2 which was based of this reasoning:
She’s… not great at legal strategy. Her initial instinct was Adrian because he’s mediagenic, then she swapped back to Adrian because her girlfriend was familiar with him despite not being online much. Both of these scenes show that Gigi values personal anecdotes very highly.
She’s projecting her personal experience onto how she thinks others will behave. She’s convinced by Adrian’s video that there’s something in the water, so a jury will too. Her chronically offline girlfriend knows about Adrian’s video so he’s going he perfect choice for the lawsuit.
Maybe the reason Gigi finds the people part of being a law so engaging is because she isn’t good at separating her experiences from other people’s realities. So, unlike the more systemic parts of lawyering, people can consistently surprise her.

Fiona’s Corner
If you came for Gigi/Beau analysis, feel free to stop reading here <33 Everything in this section pertains to personal headcannons I have about my MC.
oh?? This made me wonder how fiona would react to a case that’s simply impossible to win. Like, there’s no second shot. There’s no collusion, it’s just a case he can’t win.
I think it’d eat at him. In all honestly, he wouldn’t let it go. It’d be something he keeps checking up on on the off-hope something he can work with comes up…
I think Fiona hides behind logic a lot. Like, he’s super prone to tidying his feelings by presenting them as logical. I think it’s a holdover from how he was raised where he was encouraged to be logic-minded and heavily pushed away from emotional responses.
Honestly this case hits close to home. Fiona kinda hates how he left off? Like, yes, he made the win. But Serenity is still suffering. It’s not like he set a precedent that children’s safety supersedes parental autonomy. All he did was stop the opposite from becoming true.
Genuinely, Willow isn’t a good mom. Need I remind y’all of this scene:
screenshot credit: Lokim23’s playthrough on YouTube [here]
Against an adult, that is a crime. And Fiona witnesses that. And knows it’s going to keep happening.
This whole case is just icky for him on a personal level. I don’t think he likes it very much.

I didn’t want to end the post on such a sour note so here’s a line I thought was funny ^^
Beau’s real problem is that they all sound gross given that, for lunch, he orders a smoothie later in the chapter xD
(okay, this was supposed to be a COLLECTION of lines but I ran out of space 😞 also it’s my first time hitting the image limit :0)

I think Tumblr should have allowed people who ONLY wanted ad-free to keep their original subscription tier without the extra premium additions but guys
1k post limit to 2k post limit (expanding a post limit that isn't changing)
4 to 6 USD if you're going from ad-free to Premium
and--what was it, one thing from the store per month and you can gift it if you don't want it
compared to YouTube throttling a bunch of their features to try to bully you into buying things you used to get for free this is downright inoffensive
like I don't even care if you hate staff, they kind of still need to be able to pay for the costs of the site for us to like, use Tumblr in the first place
