Asylum Of The Daleks - Doctor Who blog (Steven Moffat Fucks Up The Daleks)

(SPOILER WARNING: The following is an in-depth critical analysis. If you haven’t seen this episode yet, you may want to before reading this review)

Series 7. Where Steven Moffat seemingly dispensed with the whole idea of a series arc and announced that each episode will be its own standalone mini-blockbuster. So lets start with Asylum Of The Dalek. Was it any good? Well funnily enough... No it wasn’t. Not even half good. It was fucking awful. Anyone with a brain could see how bloody terrible this was, or at least that’s what I assumed in my naivety. 

Yes, critical and fan reception at the time was overwhelmingly positive for Asylum Of The Daleks. Some even going so far as to call it one of the best Dalek stories ever written. But for the life of me I can’t see how they could possibly think that. Not only is Asylum of The Daleks another example of just how bad a writer Steven Moffat is and always has been, it’s quite possibly one of the worst stories Doctor Who has ever produced. And I’m not just saying that for effect. This story fails at a most basic level and quite frankly I’m astounded that anyone could possibly look at this and go ‘yeah, this is good. One of Moffat’s best in fact. Eggs anyone?’ Obviously this was back in 2012 where people were still willingly drinking Moffat’s Kool-Aid and deluding themselves into thinking he was actually clever (as opposed to, you know, a pretentious moron).

There’s so much wrong with this episode, it’s hard to know where to start. Well from the beginning I suppose. Yes, let’s start there.

The episode starts on Skaro... and immediately I’ve got questions. Didn’t they say Skaro was destroyed in the Time War? How did the Daleks resurrect it? How come the Doctor isn’t surprised that Skaro still exists? And why in God’s name would the Daleks build a giant statue of themselves?

The Doctor, Amy and Rory get captured by humans who have been Dalek-ified (I imagine Moffat thinks this is incredibly scary, but in reality it’s just really silly with the eye-stalks poking out of their foreheads and everything) and are taken to the... smirk... Parliament of the Daleks and speak to the... the... LOL! PRIME MINISTER of the Daleks!

OMG! Forgive me. I’ve always had some difficulty taking the Daleks seriously as villains, but this just takes the cake. PRIME MINISTER of the Daleks?! What, do the Daleks trundle along into voting booths and polling stations every five years? Are there Tory Daleks and Lib Dem Daleks? Are there some Daleks campaigning for cuts to immigration and others campaigning for bigger plungers? Do the Daleks have their own versions of satirical panel shows like Mock The Week and Have I Got News For You? Do the Daleks have a Monster Raving Looney Party? Please tell me the Daleks have a Monster Raving Looney Party!

And speaking of monster raving loonies, it turns out the Daleks have an asylum full of insane Daleks. Oh boy, what’s the best way to unpack this nonsense? Well let’s start with the obvious. Why would the Daleks have an insane asylum? Why not just kill the insane Daleks? That’s usually their MO, isn’t it? Anything less than pure gets exterminated, right? Well according to the Prime Minister of the Daleks (snigger), it is offensive to them to extinguish such divine hatred. Oh! Really?! Perhaps you should tell that to the Daleks who have killed members of their own species in the past for being fractionally impure. I don’t think they got the memo darling. 

And it just gets stupider and stupider the more it goes along. They want to cleanse the Asylum because a spaceship crash-landed on it and now they’re worried the insane Daleks are going to escape. Well why didn’t you just kill them in the first sodding place? And didn’t you just say a few seconds ago it was offensive to extinguish such divine hatred? Make your minds up guys! But then it turns out they can’t actually destroy the Asylum because it’s covered by an impenetrable forcefield. But hold on, it can’t be that impenetrable. A pissing spaceship just crash-landed on it. So they send the Doctor (yes the Daleks have asked their greatest enemy for help. No I don’t get it either. Just go along with it) inside the Asylum to turn the forcefield off. That’s the impenetrable forcefield that can only be turned off from the inside of the fully automated Asylum that doesn’t require a Dalek to operate it. In other words, the insane Daleks have complete unrestricted access to their own forcefield and teleporter that no one from the outside can possibly get into (unless they’re in a crashing spaceship for some reason). That’s basically like giving the prisoners the keys to their own cells.

Moffat fans, are you sure this is one of the best Dalek stories ever. Because from what I can see, this episode is a complete and utter shambles, and we’re only 5 or 10 minutes in.

Let’s quickly talk about the insane Daleks. You know, the ones the Daleks are afraid of? Must be some dangerous, homicidal nutters in that Asylum, mustn’t there? So what do they do that makes them so frightening? Well they’re incredibly slow, have really bad aim and screech the word ‘Eggs’ a lot.

Um... how is that scary? Why would the Daleks be frightened of them?... WATCH OUT! THAT DALEK IS COMPLETELY INEFFECTUAL! ARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!

Now here’s something that will get hardcore Whovians excited. Apparently there are some classic series Daleks that will be playing a big part in this episode. Awesome! Let’s see if we can find them, shall we?

Right then, well... there was that Jon Pertwee era Dalek spinning around in the background in that one scene, and um.... oh I did see that Special Weapons Dalek briefly for a couple of seconds... um... No. Actually that’s about it. So when Moffat said that classic series Daleks would be playing a part in the episode, he just meant one or two of them would make cameo appearances. Well that’s underwhelming at best and blatant false advertising at worst. What’s even weirder is that at one point the Doctor meets Dalek survivors from previous encounters he had with them like on Spirodon and Kembel and so on, but the Daleks we see are post 2005 Daleks rather than classic series Daleks from their respective eras. Whoops.

But that’s not the only thing Moffat fucks up. There’s also Amy and Rory’s marriage. Remember when we last saw them in The Doctor, The Widow, And The Wardrobe? They were sitting down for Christmas dinner, looking very happy. Now all of a sudden, they’re getting a divorce.

Now I’m sure this bizarre tonal shift wasn’t quite as noticeable at the time because there were months between the Christmas special and this episode, but if you’ve been watching each episode one after the other like I’ve been doing, it’s incredibly jarring. What the fuck happened? It just feels so utterly random.

So why did Amy and Rory split up? Because Amy is sterile now apparently. Yes, she’s utterly barren now and so she pushed Rory away for his own good. Okay. There’s a LOT wrong with this. The casual sexism for one thing, with Moffat once again implying that the only strength or worth a woman has is in her uterus. Rory’s total lack of agency is another issue. Amy just kicks Rory out of the house without telling him what the problem is or giving him a chance to decide for himself. Oh and I could do without the spousal abuse being disguised as girl power thing. Amy slapping Rory isn’t cute and sexy. It’s assault and battery. In fact it actually gets more uncomfortable than that as you realise that not only does Moffat seem to be medically incapable of writing a healthy relationship, he honestly believes this is a healthy relationship. Let me put it this way. I can understand Amy and Rory wanting to take some time apart to reevaluate things, but do you know how long it usually takes to finalise a divorce here in the UK? Four months. Are you seriously telling me that Amy and Rory never talked about this FOR FOUR MONTHS?! Do they even want to be together?! And just when you think this couldn’t get any more insulting, it turns out all their marital troubles are solved in the end thanks to a two minute conversation. So it was all basically just a gigantic waste of time. This is a real emotional tragedy a lot of couples go through and Moffat has just pulled it out of his arse in order to add to some artificial tension to his shit story. And people wonder why I hate him so much.

Dear God, this is fucking terrible. Can this episode possibly get any worse?

Well, well, well. My arch-nemesis. At last we finally meet.

Oswin is without a doubt the worst character Moffat has ever written. In fact she’s not even a character. That would be too generous. She’s a Mary Sue with no interesting personality traits and whose dialogue can easily be interchanged with River’s or Amy’s or every other female character Moffat has ever written. She’s a ‘strong female character’ in inverted commas only. There’s no effort to actually develop her character or to make her come across as a relatable or believable human being. She’s just yet another Moffat siren. Plus she just irradiates smug. I can’t tell if it’s the writing or Jenna Coleman’s performance, but she just gets under my skin. There’s just something about her I find profoundly irritating. Maybe it’s the fact that all her dialogue consists of nothing but unfunny wisecracks, patronising nicknames  and sexual innuendos. Maybe it’s the fact that despite being in mortal peril, she never reacts in a believable way, instead acting like a total smartarse. Maybe it’s the fact that her deus ex machina powers effectively reduce the Doctor to a secondary character in his own show. Do you know that feeling you get when someone scrapes their nails across a chalkboard? Well Oswin is the physical manifestation of that. She’s just incredibly obnoxious. So you can imagine my joy when she got killed off at the end. That was a happy relief. I mean can you imagine what it would have been like if they made her a companion? Now that would have been unbearable. Good thing that’s never going to happen, right?... Ri... Right?

So at the end it’s revealed that Oswin has been a Dalek all along, which would have been a tragic twist if I actually gave a shit about her and if it weren’t so utterly stupid. What’s the point of that nano-cloud? Why would the Daleks need a nano-cloud to convert humans? How are humans supposed to get into the Asylum if it’s covered by an IMPENETRABLE forcefield? How come the Daleks are converting humans in the first place? That’s the Cybermen’s schtick. Again, has Steven Moffat ever actually watched Doctor Who before? And oi, since when have the Daleks been telepathic? That’s the first I’ve heard about it. You’re just making this shit up as you go along, aren’t you Moffat?

And then comes the awful resolution. The cherry on top of the dung heap. Oswin somehow manages to hack into all of the Daleks and make them forget about the Doctor. Putting aside some of the more obvious problems like Moffat stripping everything interesting out of the Doctor and the Daleks’ antagonistic relationship for his stupid twist ending and how the fuck was Oswin, a lone Dalek in a mental asylum, able to make every single Dalek in the universe forget about him, what’s truly horrific about this is the return of the dreaded ‘Doctor who?’ It was bad enough when a chorus of Daleks was squawking it ad nauseam, but when the Doctor started chanting it too in the final scene, it became too much to bear. PLEASE GOD, SOMEONE, MAKE IT STOP!

Asylum Of The Daleks is an absolute train wreck from start to finish. It’s absolutely littered with plot holes and continuity errors, the characterisation is beyond atrocious, the villains are stupid and ineffectual, and the so called emotional core of the story is pointless, misogynistic and nonsensical. And apparently it’s one of the best Dalek stories ever written? I don’t know which version of the story you lot have been watching, but I would love to see it. I’m afraid the version I’ve just watched was complete and utter shite.

To all my ladies – listen up.

I’ve been struggling putting into words what I’ve been feeling lately, so I’m going to throw it right out there. After careful consideration, I’ve decided that we women are failing each other. That’s right ladies, I said listen up.

Let me explain.  

Yes, there are millions of women around the world who do a wonderful job of motivating the female kind and for those boss-ladies, I’m eternally grateful. Your mom is probably a woman who acts as a great source of support, guidance and after whom you’ve likely modeled much of your life. I’m sure you can provide me with a list of coworkers who inspire you on the daily with the way they kick ass in the boardroom and in life. Yes, your best friends are likely the ladies who encourage you to continue chasing your dreams despite the setbacks that leave you feeling like the only answer is to put on your yoga pants and drink a liter of wine to yourself. (Let’s be real, if she was your best friend she would toss on her best lulus, stick two straws in the bottle and chalk it up to emotional support. But maybe that’s just how my best friends roll.) I want to be clear – these aforementioned examples of female solidarity are not the scenarios against which I have a particularly sharp axe to grind.  

The bone I have to pick is with EVERYTHING else.  

I’m talking about the countless moments in our daily lives when we have the opportunity to leave a positive mark on the life of another woman and we miss it. Instead we’re caught up in a tornado of our own making - mentally comparing ourselves to one another, feeding into a false sense a competition, and judging every life, career, wardrobe and makeup decision made. Leaning too quickly towards criticism instead of towards love, encouragement and acceptance.

Older and wiser so the saying goes. I turned 30 this year. I’m not sure whether it’s cliché to say that I’ve had some life changing revelations in the past few months, or whether it’s fitting that after years of searching for something I feel as though my vision is clearer. Either way, my eyes, my mind, my heart and most notably my mouth are wide open. All of which I have no intention of shutting anytime soon. This moment of enlightenment did not occur on a remote hillside somewhere while I sat on my yoga mat basking in the warm afternoon sun and peacefully coming to the conclusion that the female kind was in need of a gentle helping hand. Not even close. The moment my perspective shifted was alternatively filled with an all-consuming fiery rage.

Let me paint the picture for you.

I recently attended a social engagement at which I felt the strong urge to result to physical violence. It started off as any “word that rhymes with hour” would – a group of well dressed women, lively chatter filling the room, perfectly concocted signature drinks being held in one hand while ladies used the other to point out certain cute, funny, and adorable photos of the guest of honour and then take a stab in the dark at how old she was in the each of the snap shots. I’m a seasoned professional at these shindigs; I play the games, I eat the cookies, I listen to the speeches and for the most part I enjoy taking the time to celebrate what is an important milestone in the lives of my closest friends. I was happy to be a part of this moment, to see my friend surrounded by her loved ones, looking forward to what the future held for her life and most importantly being able to see how truly happy she was. Overall, it was a lovely afternoon. That was until the “word that rhymes with hour” took a drastic turn for me.

Amongst the chatter a woman seated across the table from me leaned over, and in what I can only assume was an attempt to get to know me better, decided to open her line of questioning with, “So are you married as well?”  Now to be fair, I was sitting among a group of married or engaged women (which is my reality 99.9% of the time), so I can understand why one may ask that particular question. Being one of the only remaining single girls in my group of friends, trust me when I say that I’m extremely familiar with this territory. So just as I have millions of times before, I let the married/relationship question quickly slide off my back.

So when does the rage filled hammer drop you wonder? We’re about to get there.

It wasn’t her opener that got me all hot under the collar, but her follow up question that flipped my switch from happily sipping on my cocktail to annoyed as fuck. Apologies - I should have started this piece with a warning that explicit language would likely be heavily used throughout my commentary. For all those with an aversion to swearing, I suggest you step away from the screen.

Needless to say, I answered the nice lady’s question by explaining to her that no, I was in fact single and not married. What happened next can only be described as the atomic bomb of responses; it was merciless and destroyed everything in its path in a matter of mere seconds. After hearing of my singleness, the woman tilted her head to the side ever so slightly, crinkled up her nose a wee bit, shot me a “poor single girl” smile and said, “Ohhhhhhh, well that’s okay too.”

She side head tilted me into a heaping pile of single shame.

What. The. Actual. Fuck.

What followed were the toughest 30 seconds of my life, because instead of flashing her a fake smile and responding with, “Thanks, it’s been working out pretty well for me so far,” what I really wanted to do was jump across the table and throat punch her.

As the afternoon continued and I replayed the incident that will from this moment forward be referred to as the side head tilt heard round the world, my rage grew. Here I was, an intelligent, strong, creative and successful woman who has built a life for myself that I’m rather proud of and the only piece of intel that this lady was interested in was my marital status.  

She didn’t ask me if I lived in the city, whether I had travelled anywhere recently, if I had any hobbies, and God forbid she even think about asking me what I did for a living. All she wanted to know was whether she could place me into a tiny box labeled “figured out” that society dictates women of a certain age are supposed to be in. Married, with a house and 2.5 children.

Now, I understand that this is my story and it’s told through the unmistakable lens of a young single woman, but the fact is that EVERY woman has their own struggles, their own daily battles and their own set of circumstances that can sometimes feel overwhelming. No one is perfect. The lenses might be different, but with some effort we can make an attempt to TRY and see through them a little more clearly. How do we do that? I believe it begins with empathy.

Recognizing, appreciating and celebrating one another from exactly where we are.  

While I’m a single woman, my world is filled with couples and babies and families. It would be the understatement of the century to say that my friends who are married with children amaze me. These are women who work, who make time for their friends, who hit the gym everyday, who accomplish the millions of items on their to-do lists, all the while taking care of and shaping the lives of tiny little humans. While I can’t personally understand the amount of energy, dedication, and sheer will that it takes for them to do what they do on a daily basis, what I can do is empathize.

Empathy is key.

Empathize with the young girl who decides to wear only a sports bra to the gym instead of a shirt. What we might be quick to judge as a shallow attempt to garner attention from the opposite sex, could simply be a young girl living out the image what of society has told her a woman should look like in order to be viewed as attractive. She might just be in need of a better role model. That role model could be you.

Empathize with the single girl who is constantly bombarded with questions about her relationship status. What you might perceive as a polite answer to a harmless question, is really an attempt to hide her rage, because in her mind you’ve insinuated that her accomplishments to date are not valid unless accompanied by a man. She might just be in need of someone to tell her “fuck what society thinks and keep being your badass self.” That someone could be you.

Empathize with the mother who spends all day taking care of and reasoning with tiny humans who have the capability of exploding into outbursts of epic proportions simply because you gave them the wrong colour sippy cup. What you might view as a daily life that is filled with cute baby smiles and adorable outfits that never get dirty, most definitely also includes moments of frustration and utter exhaustion. She might just need someone to let her vent OR even better, to watch her children for an hour while she takes a minute for herself. That babysitter could be you.

Whatever the case may be, I beg of you ladies, let’s save the judgment, the analysis and the scrutiny for someone else and instead celebrate each other. For as far as we have come, these are still not easy times for women. We have glass ceilings, pressures to conform to unrealistic body image standards, and wage gaps to deal with; not to mention leaders of the free world thinking it’s okay to run around grabbing us by our lady parts. Need I say more? Women have serious issues to battle against in modern society, “other women” should not be an action item on that list.

I don’t have all of the answers, but I know that we need to start somewhere. Take the time to inspire the women around you. Help to build their self-confidence instead of tearing them down to boost your own. Whether it’s surviving the day with a newborn child, making it through yet another stressful workday, or deciding not to settle for anything less than they deserve.

Recognize, appreciate and celebrate one another from exactly where we are.

Do it fiercely and without question, because only a woman knows what it’s like to walk in a woman’s shoes. I believe that I speak for more than just myself in saying that I for one would love to know that I have a tribe of sisters in my corner as I step out the front door each morning in my pursuit of taking over the world.

– Astraphobia: When there’s a thunderstorm, Kat immediately starts shaking. It doesn’t take much for her to start crying as the first strike of lightning or clap of thunder would easily trigger tears. The Vibrations of Money, Wealth, and Success

Not much has more “charge” than our response to…money.

Stuff and things. Wealth. Cash.

I was listening to my favorite marketing podcast, recently, and the young man being interviewed was talking about money. How we respond to it, viscerally and emotionally. How our attitudes toward it help us, or hurt us, in our desire to be successful. To provide for our family. To climb the proverbial ladder.

He said, “Money does not come from effort.”

While I’m going to disagree with this statement, almost categorically, which I think is both false and slightly offensive–I should say that, on many counts, I enjoyed the conversation.

I believe many of us are our own worst enemies, when it comes to the “head game” around success, money, and wealth.

Because we do have a complicated, love-hate relationship with money, don’t we? And I believe many of us are our own worst enemies, when it comes to the “head game” around success, money, and wealth.

Money has energetic frequencies. If you’re willing to let this conversation get pretty honest, maybe a little bit raw, let’s talk about what your own personal energetics are, around this subject.

If you were raised Christian, you might have been taught Biblical concepts that “love of money is the root of all evil,” or that “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven.”

Confusingly, though, you probably saw your parents spend many hours, almost every day, in efforts to obtain it, spend it, talk about it.

The Christian religion I was raised in–interestingly, and perhaps even ironically, given these ancient scriptural judgments about money–has given rise to far more than its fair share of millionaires, and educated, successful, even wealthy, people.

Both of my parents, and most of my 7 siblings, have advanced degrees.

And it’s no secret that the #1 reason people obtain post-graduate degrees is to increase earning power–all of my siblings are very successful financially.

But we should examine our conflicted approach to money, because we make frequent negative statements about it: the pursuit of money, and people who have lots of it—all while spending more time pursuing it than any other waking activity.

So it seems worthwhile to explore the “vibration” of money—because, like everything else, money is simply energies (or vibration). (Remember that Einstein said, “Everything in life is vibration.”)

And the point here is that the best energies are the ones that flow through, without resistance. The energetic space you hold for thinking about, talking about, and pursuing money, should ideally, then, be a flow state.

Can we agree that when we consider wealth, assets, the green cash you earn and spend, ideally:

Now, read that again. Ask yourself if any part of that caused your mind to trip. Did you have any resistance to any part of that sentence?

What did it feel like? Did it feel like shame? Anger? Self pity?

Where in your body did you feel resistance to any of those thoughts—that money is free-flowing, abundant? I hope you’ll spend a minute thinking about any part of that statement above, in italics, that you found yourself pushing against, instead of flowing with.

Because all of those things are true. Money is a man-made concept. Human beings create the physical tender itself.

(And as you know, most “money” is flowing via digital transfer these days anyway. Bitcoin has soared from $200 to $11,000 in the past 3 years, and cybercurrencies are literally creating money. To give you a sense of the fact that it may not be what you think it is: it’s nothing more or less than energy.)

And if this is true, then it’s worth exploring what your own energy blockages may be, that keep you from being able to obtain it, and use it to make more good energies flowing in your life and in your community.

(Let me remind you of another quote that may help pique your interest in how powerful an “energetic shift” can be, in changing your financial status. The quote is by the genius scientist Nikola Tesla, who said, “If you want the secrets of the Universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.”)

I think the speaker on that podcast, when he said, “Money does not come from effort,” meant to challenge our parents’ and grandparents’ advice:

“If you want to succeed, work hard.”

However, that’s precisely the message, of all the twisty and conflicted feelings we may attach to the ideas around money, that I think we should keep.

Stonehenge, Macchu Picchu, the Colossus—all the great feats of humankind have involved massive effort. Sometimes unthinkable, thousands-of-hours, if-they’d-known-how-much-work-it-was-I-wonder-if-they-would-they-have-done-it work. Hardcore labor.

I think the young speaker denigrating the idea that from hard work flows money and success, had a valid point, which may be that you can dial in systems, and optimize, to scale in your business, instead of being limited by “trading time for dollars.”

But let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. Yes, if you’re a business owner, you must learn to delegate, leverage systems, and get the most from your team–in order to not kill yourself in building a business.

But I’ve never achieved anything without a massive amount of work. I love the idea that work creates wealth. We’ve all seen that in action. I also think that working hard for something that matters creates quality, principled humans.

I’m not sure I would even value the thing I’d achieved, if I hadn’t “left it all on the field,” in massive effort. Which I have, every time I’ve “birthed a baby,” whether it be a new book, a new business, or a new product line.

If the “green-eyed monster” of jealousy invades our consciousness relative to material wealth, then we may need to accept that we value money more than most of us are willing to admit to.

We would all be well served to check ourselves, whether we’ve ever done any of these things:

We have felt critical towards or said harsh words towards someone who achieves great financial success. Perhaps we went to high school with them, or were at the same financial status once, and now they’ve outpaced us. (If the “green-eyed monster” of jealousy invades our consciousness relative to material wealth, then we may need to accept that we value money more than most of us are willing to admit to.)

We have avoided achieving big goals because we fear our family and friends will criticize us and we’ll lose our social standing, if we out-earn them.

We have said self-sabotaging things about material success, like, “Money doesn’t buy happiness anyway.” Or “I didn’t really want to succeed at X because it would be too stressful.”

Do you really believe that a rich man can’t get into heaven?

Or do you understand the intent of that scripture is that when we achieve wealth, we tend to think ourselves better than others, perhaps even better than God, and we need to check our tendency to become arrogant?

(After all, if money is just energies, and energies are constantly flowing, wealth can come and go, ebb and flow. Virtually every millionaire has acquired and lost multiple fortunes, in a lifetime.)

Do you believe that the wealthy are innately sinful, or less good and kind, than others?

Money is just energies, but what’s far more interesting to me, is that our own approach, opinion, and feelings about money are energies, too. And they can be changed to flow with more peace and abundance.

Do you believe that money can’t buy happiness?

Statistically, it has proven to be true that wealthy people are not happier people, though poor people (below a certain financial threshold) are, as a group, more unhappy.

This doesn’t necessarily imply that money “makes” you happier or less happy—it may be, in fact, that our programmed, generational beliefs about money and materialism are at the root of the strange facts around whether money affects our life satisfaction.

The psychologist Martin Seligman, pioneer of the “positive psychology” movement, explored this. He theorized that we are not biologically programmed for the amount of “choice” we have in the modern age.

He documented how despite a massive increase in household income, in the past few generations, we are actually reported as being less happy, or the same, as before this Age of Affluence—we are not, it’s clear, more happy.

He also gathered research showing that people who are the most materialistic are also the least happy people.

“Materialistic” refers to people who spend significant time and energy wanting material things. This makes sense, in a world where consumer goods are everywhere, and no one, no matter how wealthy, can have anything he might want.

It turns out that people who are “satisfizers” rather than “maximizers” are the happiest. These terms Seligman coined refer to people who are satisfied with their circumstances, material acquisitions, and level of affluence, whereas “maximizers” are preoccupied with having, doing, and being “more” or “better” or “the best” of the options.

(You can imagine how marital happiness is affected by one partner constantly looking over the back fence, at the other options!)

I achieved my financial wealth goals I had set at the age of 24—at the age of 48. Not the age of 42, which was my goal. And I can tell you that the idea of “financial freedom” I originally set out to achieve is elusive, if not entirely a myth.

Most people who achieve 7-figure net worth will tell you that in the acquisition of their wealth, they’ve become acutely aware of how quickly it can disappear. This can lead to the sense that the original goal, “financial freedom,” or “financial stability,” may be impossible.

The more they work and acquire, and the older they get, the more they become aware of thousands of years of human history where the rich became poor, assets crumble overnight, and entire national economies fluctuate–even created or destroyed in just days or months. (We all watched the stock market tumble in 2007.)

Many of the most wealthy among us report having more anxiety around money, when they’re worth $5 million, than they had when they were young, working near the poverty line.

This may be due to becoming clear about how illusory and transitory money is.

If wealth is just digital transmission of energies, and it’s just a concept that we’ve all agreed to, with hundreds of variables impacting our valuation of the “monetary unit of measure” in the first place—isn’t it interesting, then, that we appropriate so much energy to accumulating it, comparing our relative “worth,” and using it as a barometer around which we feel pride, shame, fear, guilt, and almost endless anxiety?

If money is in constant flow, and if we can either be in, or out, of that flowing river, depending on the energies we choose–aren’t we all better off, then, being more abundant, grateful, and detached, in the way we both receive, and give, financially?

Now, I’ve gotten entirely philosophical about the green stuff, while you may be thinking,

“No, money is a cold, hard fact of life, I need that stuff, to have food three times a day, and a place to live.”

Fair enough. But there are billions of dollars, mostly in the form of little digital data bits flowing across wires buried in the ground, that we can create more of. There is no actual scarcity.

Money flows to those who work, who do so diligently, who finish their projects rather than just dream about them, who put their time and effort into “highest and best” uses.

Money flows to those who challenge the energy they put on their failures. The self-made wealthy dust themselves off after a failure, assess what they’ve learned, and move onto the next project with positive energy.

Plenty of people work very hard, harder than wealthy people do, and never earn any significant amount of money. Many people expend a tremendous amount of effort on a variety of things, while avoiding putting their labor into activities that will actually lead to material success–due to their fear or aversion around money.

So, because there’s more to becoming wealthy, or financially successful, than what your parents may have told you (“Work hard!”), we must examine another aspect of whether you could be more successful than you are.

You can absolutely have more money and wealth than you have now.

Because money is energies, and earning and because spending it creates lots of ripples and flow in the larger energetic system known as “the economy,” you can create money and wealth, without taking it from someone else who needs it!

Effort does, actually, create more wealth.

And, I feel the idea that “effort does not create wealth” is disrespectful to over 90 percent of the human beings on the Earth for whom physical labor pays for their food and shelter and their children’s needs. We have most of what is available to us, in life, due to someone’s physical effort, so I don’t think it serves, to devalue that.

But in addition to acknowledging the value of effort, shifting your energies and thought patterns towards money has the power to completely change your financial status, when added to hard work and being a “finisher” of your projects. What if you challenged:

that money is something to fear

that people who work more than 40 hours a week, or entrepreneurs, are “workaholics” and therefore pathological and need to change

that you aren’t capable of obtaining enough money

that people who obtain money and spend it easily are somehow bad or obsessive or misguided

that you shouldn’t bother to try to earn more money, because you’ll just lose it somehow

that if you are financially successful, your friends and family will turn on you

that because money can’t buy happiness, then staying where you are is actually better

that you feel slightly uncomfortable when you hear words like rich, money, or wealth

that because people who are “satisfied” with their financial state are the happiest, you, therefore, should continue to financially struggle rather than succeed

Does putting bad juju on money serve you well?

Would it feel good, or bad?–for you to:

Catch yourself every time you have a negative thought about people who appear to have more money or wealth than you do? And replace that thought with a neutral or positive statement? And/or:

Catch yourself every time you use words or thoughts (also energies) to place a value judgment on your own ability to dip in the river of money flowing through the economy? And replace that thought with a neutral or positive statement.

If you think it would feel good–rather than bad–try an experiment…..

Replace your pattern of negative thinking with statements like these:

1. I bet that guy has stepped on a lot of people to get where he is.

2. That car she’s driving is fancy, but I don’t need a flashy car to feel good about myself.

3. He’s got a really nice house, but I wouldn’t want a mortgage payment that big.

4. Money comes, and money goes (I bet he loses that business/house/car eventually).

5. Money can’t buy happiness.

6. People who work hard are addicts, and therefore pathological (“workaholics”).

To positive statements like these:

1. I’m learning to get in the stream of flowing money, to receive it, as well as give it, easily.

2. I view others with money positively because I want those positives to flow in my own life as well.

3. I don’t need to have a judgment about expensive things and the people who own them, because it doesn’t serve me and my goal to live in the higher vibrations.

4. My energies around money help more of it flow to me and to the people and causes I care about.

5. I want more wealth, and I’m not afraid to say that.

6. Money represents the ability to use my time the way I want to.

The words, thoughts, and emotions we have about the subjects of success, money, and wealth, directly, daily, affect whether we are in the stream of wealth and abundance–or whether we’re straining to get a drop from a turned-off faucet that drips now and then.

However during this summer alone, I have either been told that I need the experience for certain minimum wage jobs that were obvious even to me that the hiring manager already chose someone else or when I did pursue jobs related to my experience I have mainly been toldthey were not yet hiring and there was one instance where the hiring manager was at least more polite to me but admitted they filled the job previously with someone else. My point; my career dreams, although probably deemed too big by others, are more forpractical money reasons, not to metaphorically give the finger to my any of my managers or coworkers. Additionally, my plan to eventually relocate to another area close enough to the Washington D.C. area is once again not to metaphorically give the finger to any of my current managers or coworkers. Rather, for me it is all about money and how even a woman like me sees the financial benefits of relocating to an area outside of the Washington D.C. area that I enjoy living but still close enough to where I can visit the Washington D.C. area at least a once andor twice a month or more. I understand that Weston is not trying to come across as classist but to tell a womanlike me to just be happy with competing for minimum wage jobs and to try not to better her career prospects in life with more college actually makes me more determined to pursue the schooling of my dreams to improve my career and money prospects. So please Liz Weston take into account that I see that you are trying to help but your advice overlooks the fact that a woman such as myself is making her decisions from a monetary standpoint, taking into account the challenging decision of eventually relocating despite having fair managersand coworkers who are fairly reasonable to get along with. June 30, 2015 -- Affleck and Garner Announce Their Split

One day after their 10th anniversary, the pair released a joint statement announcing their intention to go their separate ways.

"After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce," the statement read. "We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time."

Even in their joint statement, the couple made it clear that they would put the emotional well-being of their three children -- 11-year-old Violet, 8-year-old Seraphina and 5-year-old Samuel - before themselves, and they stayed true to that goal in the two years that followed.

July 3, 2015 -- Off to the Bahamas

Affleck and Garner seemingly predicted the kind of media attention their split would generate, so the pair planned a family vacation with their children to their shared home in the Bahamas just days after announcing their break-up.

"They got the kids out of L.A. as soon as school was out," a source told Us Weekly at the time. "[The Bahamas] is a place they’ve been going to for years that’s very private and special for their kids."

July 6, 2015 -- All Together in Atlanta

A little over a week after announcing their split, Ben flew out to Atlanta to stay with his ex and their kids at a house in Atlanta, Georgia, while Garner filmed Miracles From Heaven.

While hanging out in the Peach State, Affleck took his family out for fun day trips, reportedly got an adorable puppy as a gift for his kids and generally did all the regular dad stuff, all while still wearing his wedding ring.

This was the first of many trips Affleck would make to visit his family in Atlanta over the next few months.

July 17, 2015 -- The Start of "NannyGate"

Nearly three weeks after his split from Garner was announced, rumors began to swirl that Affleck was romantically linked with the family's nanny, Christine Ouzounian.

Speculation exploded when Ouzounian tipped off the paparazzi, telling them that she would be meeting Affleck at a rental house in Los Angeles where he was staying at the time. She was photographed pulling up in Affleck's Lexus, and handing him a bottle of champagne.

Soon after, tabloids published reports claiming Affleck had been dating Ouzounian while still married to Garner. The actor's reps slammed the reports, telling ET, "all allegations of a romantic relationship are baseless and untrue," adding, "The story is complete garbage and full of lies."

August 10, 2015 -- Still Rocking the Ring

Affleck and his best buddy, Matt Damon, reunited on the red carpet at the premiere of Project Greenlight, and the bearded star was still wearing his wedding ring as he posed for photos and chatted with others in attendance. He didn't, however, stop for interviews.

Two weeks later, Affleck was spotted in public without his ring for the first time.

August 28, 2015 -- Garner Comes Home

The actress wrapped production on Miracles From Heaven and returned to California in late August, where she was spotted at the family home in the Pacific Palisades. Garner was noticeably sans wedding ring, and was accompanied by the family's new nanny.

After weeks of sparking reconciliation rumors, Affleck and Garner raised some fans' hopes when they were spotted laughing and smiling together as they left a pediatrician's office in L.A.

Earlier in the day, the pair were spotted at a marriage counseling center, where they arrived and left separately, and their demeanors were markedly less jovial. However, many thought it was a good sign that they appeared to be putting in the effort to work on their relationship.

The actress looked happy and radiant in her first post-split red carpet appearance at the Chanel candlelit charity dinner held at the Chanel Robertson boutique in Los Angeles. Garner stunned in a black, knee-length Chanel dress, which she paired with strappy heels. One accessory that was missing, however, was her wedding ring.

February 12, 2016 -- Valentine's Vacay

Affleck and Garner decided to spend the 2016 Valentine's Day weekend together, taking their kids to Montana where they stayed in a condo that they own. However, the seemingly romantic timing had nothing to do with attempts at reconciliation, but was based on their kids' school schedule.

February 26, 2016 -- Garner Gets Candid With Vanity Fair

The actress sat down for a no-holds-barred interview with Vanity Fair, where she went into surprisingly candid detail about her failed marriage, and even dished on her estranged husband's alleged affair with their nanny.

"Let me just tell you something," Garner said. "We had been separated for months before I ever heard about the nanny. She had nothing to with our decision to divorce. She was not a part of the equation."

Garner was clearly pained by the split, and defended her relationship with Affleck, sharing, "You can't have these three babies and so much of what we had. He's the love of my life. What am I going to say about that?... He's the most brilliant person in any room, the most charismatic, the most generous."

Despite the praise, she admitted that her husband was a "complicated guy" who could run hot or cold, depending on any number of factors: "When his sun shines on you, you feel it. But when the sun is shining elsewhere, it's cold," she explains. "He can cast quite a shadow."

March 16, 2016 -- Affleck Reacts to Vanity Fair Tell-All

Affleck had nothing but support for his ex's decision to go public with details about their marriage and separation, telling The New York Times, "She felt like she wanted to discuss it and get it out there and get it over with, so she could say, 'Look, I already talked about it -- I don't want to do it again'… It's fine. She's allowed to talk about it."

Affleck stressed that he had nothing but love and respect for Garner, despite their marital strife, and explained, "Jen's great. She's a great person. We're on great terms. I just saw her this morning, so that's the reality that I live in."

Affleck sat down with Ellen DeGeneres a few days later, where he echoed those sentiments, sharing, "We're good friends and we're doing our best… Our kids are fabulous and we're working our best for them."

June 23, 2016 -- Affleck Thanks Garner for His Career Success

The Argo star opened up about when his career hit rock bottom while appearing as a guest on the premiere of Bill Simmons' short-lived HBO talk show, Any Given Wednesday, and he credited his ex for helping him kick off his comeback.

In the early 2000s, Affleck starred in a string of critically panned and commercially unsuccessful films, including Daredevil, Gigli, Paycheck, Jersey Girl, and Surviving Christmas. After becoming a "punchline," he decided to focus on directing in the hopes of being taken seriously again.

September 29, 2016 -- Garner's Parenting Advice

The actress opened up to Today Parents about her efforts to be a role model for her young children.

"I try to be the best version of myself and to have faith that they're watching me as carefully when I do something right as they do when I roll through a stop sign," she said. "I don't think empathy is something you can drill in someone's head. You have to have faith that, while your kids can seem to be selfish and concerned only about the word 'mine' sometimes, overall, they are watching you really carefully, and if you care about other people, they will too."

It's this intense dedication to setting a positive example for their kids that seem to dictate the pair's ethos when it comes to co-parenting. In August, Garner addressed their efforts during an interview with the Today show, where she explained, "It has to be [all about the kids]. You don't have a choice. It has to be… We are definitely a modern family. We're doing really well."

December 13, 2016 -- The 'World's Greatest Mom' Award

Affleck made it very clear that he still had a lot of love for his ex when he while speaking at the New York Times' Times Talks, where he called Garner the the "world's greatest mom." The actor and director was also asked what the defining moment of his life was, to which he replied, "the birth of my children," adding, "I think the meaning of life is to make good people."

March 14, 2017 -- Affleck Checks Out

The star took to Facebook last month to reveal his struggles with alcohol addiction and announce that he'd just completed another treatment stint, all for the sake of his kids.

"I have completed treatment for alcohol addiction; something I've dealt with in the past and will continue to confront. I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be," he wrote. "I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step."

Affleck also thanked his estranged wife for her endless support, writing, "I'm lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I've done the work I set out to do. This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery."

April 13, 2017 -- Affleck and Garner Finally File

Nearly two years after announcing their separation and intent to divorce, the pair actually filed the paperwork. Garner and Affleck filed both their petition and response -- which mirror each other exactly -- together, and without legal representation.

According to TMZ, who first reported the news, the pair did not sign a prenuptial agreement, and are still in the process of negotiating a monetary settlement. Additionally, they are seeking joint legal and physical custody of their children. Spousal support terms have not yet been specified.

To many advisors, lead generation is something of a mystery.

Today, we’re going to cover the seven components that need to be in play, and really playing at their best, for you to get the most out of the marketing dollars you’re spending. Let’s jump right in.

1. Define your target market.

Do you know who your ideal client is? You may think it breaks down to age, income, asset level or zip code, but if you want to optimize this part of your funnel, you’ll need to get even more specific by knowing your targeted client’s gender; marital status; occupation; ethnicity; political leaning; and interests. If you’re in a niche market, you may need other details as well.

Once you’ve defined your market with categories such as these, you’ll be prepared to craft a better message, one that will attract your ideal client, while repelling others you don’t want to work with.

2. Choose the right traffic source.

All traffic sources have their place, but which is right? Here are four metrics you can use to answer that for yourself.

Impressions versus conversions. In impression-based marketing, you pay to get your message in front of a certain number of people. In conversion-based marketing, you pay only when someone responds to your message. Rather than making an investment that puts all the risk on you, we’ve found it’s better to pay for the result. That way you can control your cost per lead and track exactly what you’re getting from the marketing dollars you spend.

Lead volume. Referrals may be the best and cheapest source of leads, but the volume they generate is very low. If you were to rely on referrals alone, you’d probably struggle to get the volume you need. Volume is a critical metric to analyze when choosing your traffic source.

Lead quality. We like to talk about lead quality in terms of buying temperature. Are your leads at the top of the scale, ready to make decisions today? Those are hot leads. Or are they relatively cold, in need of a lot of education and selling to get them to that point? Think about this when evaluating how well a given traffic source will work for you.

Cost per lead. When you divide how much you spend on a campaign by how many leads that campaign brings in, you can see how much each lead costs. This is an important metric you should definitely be watching. Sometimes, the results are surprising.

3. Craft a message that converts.

When prospects come across your message, does it resonate with them? If you’ve taken the time to understand their goals, fears, opportunities and beliefs, you can tap into the emotional drivers that compel them. These are the factors that set you – and your message — apart from the competition. Psychographic information is much more powerful than demographic information.

4. Create a high-value lead magnet.

An on-point message is only so good. To generate an exceptional response, it has to be paired with a high-value lead magnet. There are eight points to check off your list here. Let’s look at the first four.

High perceived value. To increase the perception of value, make sure your offering is professionally designed and written. If it’s a video, it should be professionally filmed. An offering with a low perceived value just won’t generate the leads you’re looking for.

Real ralue. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that all you need is a pretty package. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your lead magnet is the first transaction you have with your prospect, and it has to deliver real value; otherwise, you may actually drive them away. Instead, impress them with a substantive offering right out of the gate.

Ease of consumption. Prospects want to digest your lead magnet quickly, in five minutes or less. It shouldn’t feel like work or require too much of an investment. Think of it as a sample of what you can do, an appetizer before the main course.

Specificity. Your lead magnet should solve a specific problem. For example, “Ten things to know about financial security” is way too broad. On the other hand, “Three things you need to understand about low interest rates” or “Eight things you can do to protect your portfolio” are targeted to specific hot buttons – and they’re going to generate a much higher response as a result.

Again, there are eight elements to creating a high value lead magnet; these are the first four. At the end of this post we’ll tell you where you you can get the rest.

5. Design your lead capture page.

A poorly-designed landing page isn’t going to generate the volume of leads you should be getting, even if your lead magnet is off the charts. Let’s look at how you can optimize that.

Not home. Your lead page should not be your home page. A corporate home page offers so many options, prospects can get lost or distracted. That kills conversions. Instead, drive people to a page that allows them to do one thing, and one thing only: opt in and get your lead magnet.

Limit navigation. It’s okay to link your logo back to your home page, but that’s it. Don’t include your top top-level navigation bar as it could tempt your prospects to go somewhere else.

Exit pop. If prospects try to leave the page without opting in, you can trigger a message to pop up saying wait, you forgot to get your lead magnet. We used to think these were cheesy — before we saw the results. Twenty to 30 percent of leads that would have bounced will opt in after seeing an exit pop.

6. Deploy your retargeting strategy.

If retargeting is a foreign concept, this may be your most important takeaway. Less than 2 percent of web visitors convert the first time they’re exposed to a new product or service; this bears out across all kinds of websites. How can you ensure they’ll come back after they bounce? That’s where tracking pixels and retargeting come in.

Retargeting is a way to continue marketing to people you know are interested. When a prospect visits your lead capture page, but doesn’t opt in, you can drop a tracking pixel on their browser so that, as they browse the web, your ads will continue to show up.

The statistics on this are incredible. When done correctly, retargeting can boost response by as much as 400 percent. And 25 to 30 percent of consumers said they have positive feelings about these ads, because what’s marketed is something they’re genuinely interested in.

7. Build in long-term nurture.

We all know that follow-up is crucial, yet less than half of us actually follow up even one time. Once is better than nothing, but only 2 percent of deals close after the first follow-up. Twelve percent of us follow up three times; even so, only 4 percent of deals happen there. Ten percent of advisors follow up five or more times – and that’s where 81 percent of the deals are happening. If you want to put yourself among the top 10 percent of advisors in the country, get an automated system in place to follow up with every lead at least five times.
