Annecy photodump 3 - directors standing on stages
One of the neat things about this kind of big film festival is that if you go to screenings in Bonlieu Grand Salle/Petite Salle - and even the screens in Pathé sometimes - they usually get the directors onstage to give a little intro and then you can applaud them at the end.
Correspondingly, I have a lot of photos of various animation people standing on stages. Here goes.
Tumblr media
Abi Feijó (left) and Regina Pessoa (middle), about to present their block of short films.
Tumblr media
IIRC this is Vasco Sá, of the BAP Animation studio, co director of Soot, Augur and Garrano (all of which were excellent).
Tumblr media
The team behind L'armée des Romantiques during their making-of panel.
Tumblr media
Director Nakajima Ryo (middle) of the controversial motion capture + AI film Who Said Death Is Beautiful? - the woman on the right is his translator.
To add on to this story, an AI-based film in the TV films category actually got booed by the audience. By contrast, people laughed at various points during Ryo's film, and many walked out, but they still applauded it at the end.
Tumblr media
Several members of the team behind Flow. IIRC, director Gints Zilbalodis is on the right, I can't remember the other peoples roles.
Tumblr media
Director Bum-Wook Hur (right) of The Pig That Survived Foot and Mouth Disease. The guy in the red scarf is the main mocap actor whose name I regret not writing down and now can't confirm online. This guy basically played every one of the 30 characters in the movie, which is crazy impressive. No I don't know why they stood so far back on the stage and caught the projector, instead of stepping forward into the spotlights...
Tumblr media
I believe this (second from right) is director Shinnosuke Yakuwa of Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window.
Tumblr media
The line of directors for the WTF2024 block presiding over a fleet of paper planes.
Tumblr media
Horrible photo but middle is Yves Netzhammer, director of Journey of Shadows.
Tumblr media
Some of the team behind the remarkable French-Japanese co-production Ghost Cat Anzu; co-directors Yoko Kuno and Nobuhiro Yamashita are on the right with a little Anzu plushie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Naoko Yamada of K-On!, Tamako Market, Koe no Katachi and Liz and the Blue Bird fame, here at Annecy for the first time with The Colors Within, where she got two standing ovations.
Tumblr media
A random bird. Has not directed any movies to my knowledge, but one day!

Welcome to the Favorite Classmate Tournament!
This is gonna be a big one. Due to the number of classmates and the fact i couldn't evenly distribute it in a number of pairs and sides that made sense for the brackets (maybe there's a way and I'm just bad at math), every side initially includes 3 pairs and 1 trio each, and finals will be a poll between 3 contenders and y'all will have to live with that, I did my best.
As always, pairs/trios and their order in the bracket were randomly generated.
Complete list of polls under the cut, they'll be linked as soon as they're posted. Polls will be open for a week. May your fave win!

I think I did something like this before, but I'm doing it again!
---
You can tell a lot about someone from the type of music they listen to. Hit shuffle on your iPod/phone/iTunes/media player and write  down the first 10 songs. Then pass this on to 10 people. One rule: No skipping!
Here are the results for iTunes:
departure! (Killua version) - Mariya Ise
Altissia - Yoko Shimomura
House of Love - Koyasu Takehito
I CAN'T STOP ME (English Version) - TWICE
Same Dream, Same Mind, Same Night - SEVENTEEN
Aimo (O.C. version) - Megumi Nakajima
Beyond the Clear Sky - Motoi Sakuraba
For you to be the light - Kensho Ono
The Way You Make Me Feel - Michael Jackson
Aikagi Gunman to Aikagi Ninja - Sekihan
I also did it for my iTouch and these were the results:
[-] - Yui Horie
Kindan no Panse - Saori Ishizuka
Candy - H.O.T.
Gira Gira Summer - May'n
Shinkuu no Diamond Crevasse - May'n
MOON PRIDE - Momoiro Clover Z
COSMIC CHILD - KAT-TUN
Can Do - GRANRODEO
RINGA LINGA - Taeyang
ORIGINAL RESONANCE - Mamoru Miyano & Kenichi Suzumura
I'm not gonna tag anyone. But if you come across this, feel free to consider yourself tagged. :D

I was tagged by @duckland and @amarantoo (muchas gracias!) to list my 5 top confort characters.
This is quite hard, to choose only 5, so I'll try and be varied and choose some representatives at least^^.
In any order:
-Miles Vorkosigan Nasimith (from the mind of Lois McMaster Bujold): A favourite since I was little, I felt reflected on him and found parallelism between his life and mine. I still love these books a lot.
-Sam Vimes & Susan Sto-Helit(from Discworld, Terry Pratchett): I have to pick both, cannot choose between them, but they're like my favourites in the saga. They take no shit, get angry at injustice, they're really good at solving problems and seeing the obvious, etc...
-Sarah Kerrigan (from StarCraft): I loved her so much and cheered as she got to have some vengeance. And then she turns ok too! But to be fair I was supporting her even when she was evil:p
-The Straw Hat crew, especially Robin (from One Piece): all of them are so much fun and it's so nice to read about them. Plus they're so much anti-curent system of power and privilege....and yeah, I have a soft spot for Robin, and THAT scene was one of the best scenes ever...
-Monica & Chandler (from Friends): except for some parts, I believe Friends still manages to be really good and relatable. And these two were the best ones for me in the series, and also a good example of, in general, a good relationship.
I had trouble thinking about comfort characters and I wanted to select at least one for different media, but there's other honorable mentions like Victor & Klaus(Umbrella Academy), Colin Robinson & Guillermo(What we do in the Shadows), Ron Swanson (Parks & Recreation), all 6 main characters from The Good Place, Death, Granny Weatherwax, Angua, Tiffany Aching(Discworld ), Harry Dresden & Molly Carpenter (the Dresden Files), Arya Stark (asoiaf), Crowley (Good Omens), the Major (ghost in the shell), Aloy (Horizon), Rinoa(FF8), Arale (dr. Slump), Ranma (Ranma 1/2), Yoko Nakajima (12 kingdoms) plus so many others I may not think about ATM. Yeah I like stories and I like a lot of characters ^^''.
I tag @lorraineblack90 , @mncqvq1 , @noisycoconut , @cat-charmer , @somewherebehindthemusgo , @riveroflonging , @dying-of-the-light and anyone else who feels like doing it and sees this post (mention me later!)

TV Recommendation: The Twelve Kingdoms
** Nearly every character is asexual, and most are aromantic as well.
Tumblr media
Yoko Nakajima only wanted to be a normal person.
She does whatever she is told, gets good grades, and is the ultimate pushover. Her classmates take advantage of her, and so she has no one she considers a friend.
And then Keiki appears.
His skin is impossibly white, his hair ridiculously long, and something about him isn't... human. Keiki bows at Yoko's feet and swears to always protect and defend her throne.
And then all hell breaks loose.
The school is attacked by monsters, Keiki kidnaps Yoko and two of her classmates- Asano and Sugimoto- and drags them through a malestrom all the way to the Twelve Kingdoms.
In a sea of stars and whirling galaxies sits thirteen lands. Twelve mighty kingdoms, each with their own King or Queen upon the throne. And at the heart of the Twelve Kingdoms- a land of unparalleled divinity.
Keiki is separated from Yoko and her classmates, then vanishes entirely. They are left lost and alone in a strange world- one where their kind are hunted by the native populace.
Yoko has landed in the Kingdom of Kou, a decaying kingdom with a corrupt ruler at its heart, one who will stop at nothing to see her dead- because Yoko is no ordinary girl.
Not since the moment Keiki knelt before her and declared her his Queen.
Keiki is the Kirin of Kei. He- like his eleven siblings- was born in the divine land at the heart of the Twelve Kingdoms and imbued with a holy mission: To find the ruler chosen by the heavens, and become the instrument of their will.
If the ruler fails in their duty and becomes corrupt, their Kingdom will be beset by monsters, natural disasters will engulf the land, and the Kirin will sicken and die- taking their ruler with them.
After the last Queen of Kei was driven insane by her unrequited lust for Keiki (Kirin are aromantic and asexual), the Kingdom of Kei began to die, and Keiki himself fell gravely ill. In a moment of clarity, the Queen ended her life, saving Keiki's and slowing the decay of her kingdom.
Now, Keiki is a prisoner of the King of Kou, who needs the Kingdom of Kei to fester so that he can blame Kei for the rot eating away at his own lands. Anything to avoid facing the truth: he has lost the mandate of heaven, and Kouren, the Kirin of Kou, is dying.
Yoko has entered a snakepit of political intrigue and magical manipulation with no idea what to do or where to go. She is soon separated from her friends, who vanish into the Twelve Kingdoms. Yoko herself begins to hallucinate, driving her to insanity.
The only way to survive the Twelve Kingdoms is for Yoko to make her way to the King of En, one of the oldest and wisest of all rulers. With the armies of En, Yoko can storm the capital of Kei, throw out the imposter the King of Kou has placed upon the throne, and maybe find a way back to her world.
But where is Keiki? Why did he abandon Yoko and her friends?
And can Yoko survive long enough to claim a throne that she doesn't even want?
