Reviews and Testimonials - Read reviews and testimonials from past participants to get a sense of their experiences and satisfaction with the program. This will give you valuable insights into the quality and effectiveness of the training.
Location and Environment - Consider the location and environment in which the training takes place. Choose a location that resonates with you and provides the atmosphere and surroundings that will enhance your learning experience.
Cost and Duration - Take into account the cost and duration of the program. Compare prices and ensure that the program offers good value for money. Consider your personal commitments and choose a program that fits within your schedule.

Off to Thailand with the boys
I’m not traveling alone this time. When my friend David suggested that I might like to teach some yoga at a retreat in Thailand I was on board. Literally, because twenty of us are going to be floating on some kind of platform in the middle of a lake in the middle of the Jungle in Thailand. No WiFi, spotty solar and constant human contact. I know, I know, the whole thing smacks of my old favorite CBS tv show. I always thought I would be pretty good at it? We shall see if I’m voted off first ha ha. In any case I have downloaded two seasons of Bobs burgers to my phone and Garrett and Kyle got me a hand crank battery for my birthday...oh right I will be too busy meditating... Ben and Kristian are coming with me. We are hoping for a gentle twenty hour flight to Hong Kong and then off to Chiang Mai. We are staying in a hostel for a few days and hopefully meeting up with Edgar who has just spent a day trapped in Chicago at the airport and Andrew who is flying out at the end of the week. Part of me is excited for a change of pace and part of me is dreading the physical heroics it takes to jettison a human body to the other side of the planet. Once we get there, the plan is to unjetlag at a hostel and get a million massages and eat like we mean it. I want to visit my friends and teachers at my school and possibly do the kind of touristy things I would never do because I have company. We shall see. We all meet up at a coffee shop on Sunday and prepare for the journey into the wilderness. I’m teaching yoga, David is teaching Thai massage, and there is another person teaching meditation. Besides floating in the water that is it for a week. It sounds really good to me... I just hope I can find the immunity idol😜

Grandmaster Mantak Chia Biography
Master Mantak Chia is the creator of the Universal Healing Tao system. Since childhood he has been studying the Taoist approach to life. His mastery of this ancient knowledge, enhanced by his study of other disciplines, has resulted in the development.
Mantak Chia was born in Thailand to Chinese parents in 1944. When he was six years old, Buddhist monks taught him how to sit and “still the mind.” While still a grammar school student, he learned traditional Thai boxing. He was then taught Tai Chi Chuan by Master Lu, who soon introduced him to Aikido, Yoga and broader levels of Tai Chi.
Mantak Chia Books
Years later, when he was a student in Hong Kong excelling in track and field events, a senior classmate named Cheng Sue-Sue introduced him to his first esoteric teacher and Taoist Master, Master Yi Eng (I Yun). At this point, Master Chia began his studies of the Taoist way of life in earnest. He learned how to circulate energy through the Microcosmic Orbit and, through the practice of Fusion of the Five Elements, how to open the other Six Special Channels. As he studied Inner Alchemy further, he learned the Enlightenment of the Kan and Li, Sealing of the Five Senses, Congress of Heaven and Earth and Reunion of Heaven and Man. It was Master Yi Eng who authorized Master Chia to teach and heal.
When Mantak Chia was in his early twenties he studied with Master Meugi in Singapore, who taught him Kundalini, Taoist Yoga and the Buddha Palm. He was soon able to clear blockages to the flow of energy within his own body. He learned to pass the life force energy through his hands also, so that he could heal Master Meugi’s patients. He then learned Chi Nei Tsang from Dr. Mui Yimwattana in Thailand.
A while later, he studied with Master Cheng Yao-Lun who taught him the Shao-Lin Method of Internal Power. He learned the closely guarded secret of the organs, glands and bone marrow exercise known as Bone Marrow Nei Kung and the exercise known as Strengthening and Renewal of the Tendons. Master Cheng Yao-Lun’s system combined Thai boxing and Kung Fu. Master Chia also studied at this time with Master Pan Yu, whose system combined Taoist, Buddhist and Zen teachings. Master Pan Yu also taught him about the exchange of Yin and Yang power between men and women, and how to develop the Steel Body.
To understand the mechanisms behind healing energy better, Master Chia studied Western anatomy and medical science for two years. While pursuing his studies, he managed the Westetner Company.
Using his knowledge of Taoism, combined with the other disciplines. He eventually trained other Instructors to communicate this knowledge and he established the Natural Healing Center in Thailand. Five years later, he decided to move to New York, where in 1979, he opened the Universal Healing Tao Center. During his years in America, Master Chia continued his studies in the Wu system of Tai Chi with Edward Yee in New York.
Mantak Chia Six Healing Sounds
In June 1990, Master Chia was honored in San Francisco by the International Congress of Chinese Medicine and Qi Gong (Chi Kung) who named him the first recipient of the Qigong Master of the Year award. He received this award again in 2012.
In 1994, Master Chia moved back to Thailand.
In December 2000, was completed with two Meditation Halls, two open-air Simple Chi Kung Pavilions, indoor Tai Chi, Tao Tao Yin and Chi Nei Tsang Hall, Tai Chi Natural Swimming Pool, Pakua Center, Internal World Class Weight Lifting Hall and complete Eight Court Recreational Facilities.
In February 2002, creating a complete environment for the higher level Taoist practices. In September 2003 Master Chia opened the Spa using Western and Eastern Technology with Traditional Thai Massage, India Aveda Therapies and Chinese Chi Nei Tsang Massage. The Spa is supervised by trained and certificated Medical Doctors, MDs with Holistic Degrees providing Colonic Therapy, Stem Cell Cancer Prevention and Natural Cancer Cure Treatments and complete in March 2004.
In March 2004 the Complete Holistic Mind, Body and Spirit Training was introduced at Tao Garden. In July 2009 Master Chia introduced the Five Star Eight Forces Detox Spa with Saunas, Therapy Color Heated Pool, Jacuzzi, and Internal Massage Treatments. This was also introduced with Raw Food and Fasting Program with Organic Juice Bar.
In September 2010 the Universal Healing Tao Instructors celebrated thirty years of Master Chia’s teaching with the Tao Congress in Thailand at Tao Garden having over 100 instructors present for the celebration. During these years Master Chia has taught tens of thousands of students throughout the world. He has trained and certified over 1,500 instructors and practitioners.

This list serves as a positive guide to some of the leading modern teachers alive today. In August 2016, Universal Healing Tao instructors & students celebrated thirty-five years of Master Chia’s teaching with the event “Back to the Source” in Thailand having over 100 participants present. Master Chia is a warm, friendly and helpful man who views himself primarily as a teacher. He presents the Universal Tao System in a straightforward and practical manner, while always expanding his knowledge and approach to teaching. He uses a word processor for writing and is totally at ease with the latest computer technology.
Master Chia is the author of more than two dozens of books and numerous videos. Master Chia estimates that it will take fifty books to convey the full Universal Healing Tao System.
The Universal Healing Tao is a practical system of self-cultivation and spiritual development.
Master Mantak Chia created the Universal Healing Tao system to effectively share the many ancient Chinese meditative and internal energy practices transmitted to him by a series of masters and teachers from throughout Asia. His sincere wish is that every individual has the opportunity to complete the harmonious evolution of body, mind and spirit.
Through these practices, the student learns to take personal responsibility for their own physical, emotional and spiritual well being.
Through learning to nurture and heal oneself a solid foundation is laid for the realization of one’s spiritual potential. By re-establishing a direct connection with the natural energies surrounding us, the subtle awareness necessary for spiritual progress arises spontaneously. Ultimately, the boundaries of the physical body are transcended by the development of the soul and spirit bodies. Though self-healing, the healer is born.
Once the energy channels, or meridians, of the body have been opened and the energies of the internal organs harmonized, this unique integrated energy becomes available to heal others. Then, by opening and connecting to the sources of energy around us in Nature and the Universe beyond, boundless healing power becomes available for the benefit of all.

Ten impressive bamboo buildings that demonstrate the material's versatility
From a modular housing prototype to a disaster-proof yoga studio, we've rounded up 10 bamboo architectures from Dezeen's archive that use the ancient construction material in new and unusual ways.
After being abandoned in favour of concrete and steel in the 20th century, bamboo is increasingly being integrated into modern buildings due to its lightness and flexibility.
Due to its rapid growth, the biomaterial is affordable, rapidly renewable and able to sequester large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere.
At the same time, researchers say its strength could make it a sustainable substitute for traditional rebars as well as creating structures that are resistant to natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes.
"I think bamboo and laminated bamboo will replace other materials and become the 'green steel' of the 21st century," Vietnamese architect Vo Trong Nghia told Dezeen.
Read on for a selection of projects that make the most of this versatile grass.
The Arc by Ibuku
Informed by the way the human ribcage is held in place by the tension from the surrounding muscles and skin, architecture studio Ibuku created a self-supporting roof made entirely from bamboo for the gymnasium of Bali's Green School.
Composed of 14-metre-high cane arches connected by double-curved gridshells, the "unprecedented" structure is capable of enclosing a large area using minimal material while leaving the floor underneath uninterrupted by supporting columns.

Impression Sanjie Liu canopy by LLLab
Bamboo strands are hand-woven to form this 140-metre-long canopy, which shelters visitors of the Impression Sanjie Liu light show on an island in Yangshuo's Li River.
A number of spherical pavilions designed to resemble lanterns are finished in the same latticework and supported by load-bearing bamboo lengths that were soaked and scorched so they could be bent into shape.
Find out more about the installation ›
Bamboo Sports Hall by Chiangmai Life Architects and Construction
Sweeping, 17-metre trusses were prefabricated on-site and lifted into position using a crane to create a sports hall for Thailand's Panyaden International School, set among rice fields on the outskirts of Chiang Mai.
An open lattice structure cuts out the need for air conditioning and by eschewing steel fixings in favour of rope, Chiangmai Life Architects and Construction claims it was able to create a building that absorbed more carbon in its materials than was emitted through its construction.

Bamboo Pavilion by Zuo Studio
Taiwanese practice Zuo Studio designed this pavilion in Taichung to demonstrate how the low-carbon building material could offer "a more habitable environment to our next generation".
Sourced from a total of 320 plants, its structure is formed from thick, hollow rods of Moso bamboo that are connected via smaller interlacing Makino bamboo segments.
Find out more about Bamboo Pavilion ›
Bamboo Ring by Kengo Kuma
Kengo Kuma has described bamboo as the "material of the future" and combined it with carbon fibre to create a highly durable, self-supporting structure installed at the V&A for London Design Festival 2019.
According to Kuma, this kind of construction could help to create buildings that are capable of withstanding natural disasters such as the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.
"This is a new materiality that we can try to bring to the city," he told Dezeen
Find out more about Bamboo Ring ›
Rising Canes by Penda
The Rising Canes pavilion was developed by architecture studio Penda to showcase modular bamboo construction, which the practice said could be used to form emergency housing, portable hotels and even an entire sustainable city for 200,000 people.
Exhibited at Beijing Design Week, the prototype sees vertical and horizontal stems connected via X-shaped joints of the same material to create interlocking building blocks. These could be expanded in every direction, allowing architecture to grow with its inhabitants.
"The structure could grow as tall as the trees," Precht told Dezeen.

Thread by Toshiko Mori
An undulating canopy drapes and folds itself over the whitewashed buildings of this cultural hub in Senegal, designed by Japanese architect Toshiko Mori.
Its flexible bamboo structure helps to create a fluid, modern reinterpretation of a traditional thatched roof, which encircles a number of open-air courtyards.
Find out more about Thread ›
Hardelot Theatre by Studio Andrew Todd
Twelve-metre-high poles of bamboo encircle the cylindrical Hardelot Theatre near Calais, creating a cage-like exterior and a radiating pattern that emanates from its roof.
This gridded structure is mirrored in the slatted timber panelling of the playhouse, which was designed as a homage to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.
Find out more about the Hardelot Theatre ›
Vedana Restaurant by Vo Trong Nghia
Although the towering roof of Nghia's Vedana Restaurant appears to be formed from three thatched gables, the dome is actually a single structure formed from 36 bamboo modules.
This fact is revealed only on the interior, where the intersecting rods are left exposed and form a spiralling mandala pattern across the cavernous ceiling.
"It is not easy to create beautiful spaces by using bamboo because it is an uneven material," Nghia said. "We try to control the accuracy of the construction by applying unit-frame prefabrication."
Find out more about the Vedana Restaurant ›
Luum Temple by CO-LAB Design Office
Luum yoga studio in the jungles of Tulum is formed from five parametrically designed arches, woven together by a structural triangular pattern and bound by two layers of lattice to create a structure that is able to resist hurricane forces.
"Due to the carbon bamboo sequesters during its rapid harvest growth cycle, and its high strength to weight ratio, bamboo is a leading sustainable material with amazing potentials," CO-LAB Design Office said.

What Makes Thai Massage Authentic?
Tumblr media
These days there are a few hundred back rub styles, including a few Thai back rub ones. 100 years prior rub was not all that well known and broad in the west. Contrasted with today, there were not many back rub styles. Over the most recent couple of many years numerous styles of back rub, bodywork, exercise based recuperation, yoga and energy mending were created. What makes them genuine?
We should see how such styles create.
1. Somebody continues fostering a current framework and transforms it into something new. For instance Swedish back rub, profound tissue back rub and sports rub are unmistakably related. Visit this site 출장홈타이
2. Somebody has a decent knowledge and concocts a genuinely novel methodology. A model would be Trager or Feldenkrais.
3. Somebody contemplates a few frameworks and consolidates them into a recent fad. A model would be Thai Massage joined with components from Shiatsu and Tui Na.
4. Somebody adjusts a current framework and gives it another name. A model would be Thai back rub and Thai Yoga Massage.
At a certain point that load of new frameworks were obscure. They were not seen as bona fide, and were now and again marked as blasphemy since they veered from a set up style. After some time an ever increasing number of individuals considered the new framework, books were expounded on it, it turned out to be broadly known and acknowledged, and afterward it's anything but a bona fide style. Now it got protected, cherished in stone and fixed with genuine manuals and rules.
In the following stage the tables are turned, and on the off chance that somebody rehearses the framework in an alternate manner, that is declared unauthentic and against the soul of the insightful author of the incredible framework. In the event that enough individuals see an advantage in the new shocking style, it will over the long haul become its own true framework. In this manner the cycle proceeds.
As of late I read an article composed by a western back rub advisor who requested that Thai back rub experts recognize in the event that they practice northern or southern or ordinary person style and that they ought to show that they know a specific supplication that some Thai back rub schools in Thailand educate.
Here in Thailand most advisors never present this supplication, and couldn't do as such whenever inquired. What's more, those styles are broadly blended. There are no fixed limits. In the northern city of Chiang Mai there are schools that show the Bangkok style, others show northern style, and a few instructors have their own extraordinary style.
Is there anything to be acquired by rub strictness? Is a back rub better in light of the fact that it's anything but a specific mark? Is there anything amiss with improving or changing a back rub style? To me the response to every one of the three inquiries is no. Validness is a valuable necessity for valuable stones, fine art, or collectibles. Mending treatment on a more significant level is a remarkably singular expertise which resists endeavors to be enacted by definitions or names.
A portion of my best Thai back rub instructors had their own exceptional style, and that is the thing that made them uncommon. In the realm of back rub and recuperating treatment, names, styles and credibility are acceptable systems for one's underlying training. However, the more one dominates in the recuperating callings, the less there is any motivation to restrict oneself to assignments and marks. Recuperating is an exceptionally close to home articulation that comes less from method than from one's heart, one's expectation, and one's enthusiasm.
I need to concede that I am one-sided towards the eastern methodology, and my sentiments depend on having lived in Asia for a long time, and having drilled and shown Thai back rub for over ten years. Asian specialists are significantly less keen on sorting, marking and verifying than their western partners. I don't know what an 'genuine' Thai back rub is, however I sure can tell a decent one when I get it.

Private treatment might be considered the "last-dump" way to deal with treating strange brain science or psychopathology.
During the 1600s, Great Britain set up the Poor Law that permitted helpless youngsters to get prepared in apprenticeships by eliminating them from their families and driving them to live in bunch homes. In the 1800s, the United States duplicated this framework, yet frequently intellectually sick kids were set in prison with grown-ups in light of the fact that society didn't have a clue how to manage them. There were no RTCs set up to give the 24-hour care they required and they were put in prison when they couldn't live in the home. In the 1900s, Anna Freud and her companions were essential for the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society and they took a shot at how to think about children. They attempted to make private therapy centers for kids and youths with passionate and conduct issues.
The year 1944 denoted the start of Bruno Bettelheim's work at the Orthogenic School in Chicago, and Fritz Redl and David Wineman's work at the Pioneer House in Detroit. Bettelheim helped increment attention to staff mentalities on youngsters in treatment. He fortified that a mental clinic was, where staff and patients affected one another and patients were molded by one another's behaviors. Bettelheim additionally accepted that families ought not have continuous contact with their kid while the person was in treatment. This contrasts from network based treatment and family treatment of late years, in which the objective of treatment is for a kid to stay in the home. Also, accentuation is put on the family's part in improving long haul results after treatment in a RTC. The Pioneer House made a specialized curriculum program to help improve motivation control and amiability in children. After WWII, Bettelheim and the joint endeavors of Redl and Wineman were instrumental in building up private offices as remedial treatment elective for kids and youths who can not live at home
During the 1960s, the second era of psychoanalytical RTC was made. These projects proceeded with crafted by the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society so as to remember families and networks for the kid's treatment. One case of this is the Walker Home and School which was set up by Dr. Albert Treischman in 1961 for young adult young men with extreme passionate or conduct problems. He included families so as to assist them with creating associations with their kids inside homes, state funded schools and communities. Family and network contribution made this program not the same as past projects.
Starting during the 1980s, psychological social treatment was all the more generally utilized in kid psychiatry, as a wellspring of intercession for grieved youth, and was applied in RTCs to create better long haul results. Attachment hypothesis additionally created because of the ascent of youngsters admitted to RTCs who were manhandled or disregarded. These youngsters required particular consideration via overseers who were proficient about trauma.
During the 1990s, the quantity of kids entering RTCs expanded significantly, prompting an arrangement move from foundation based administrations to a family-focused network arrangement of care. This likewise mirrored the absence of fitting treatment assets. Notwithstanding, private treatment centers have kept on developing and today house more than 50,000 children The quantity of private treatment centers in the United States is presently assessed at 28,900 facilities.
Drug rehabilitation is in some cases part of the criminal equity framework. Individuals indicted for minor drug offenses might be condemned to rehabilitation rather than jail, and those sentenced for driving while inebriated are here and there needed to go to Alcoholics Anonymous gatherings. There are an incredible number of approaches to address an elective sentence in a drug ownership or DUI case; progressively, American courts are happy to investigate fresh techniques for conveying this administration. There have been claims recorded, and won, with respect to the necessity of going to Alcoholics Anonymous and other twelve-venture gatherings as being conflicting with the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, ordering partition of chapel and state.
At times, people can be court requested to drug rehabilitation by the state through enactment like the Marchman Act.
Customary compulsion treatment depends principally on directing.
Advocates help people with distinguishing practices and issues identified with their dependence. It tends to be done on an individual premise, however it's more normal to discover it in a gathering setting and can incorporate emergency advising, week by week or day by day directing, and drop-in guiding backings. Instructors are prepared to create recuperation programs that help to restore sound practices and give adapting methodologies at whatever point a circumstance of danger occurs. It's extremely regular to see them likewise work with relatives who are influenced by the addictions of the individual, or in a network to forestall habit and teach the general population. Guides ought to have the option to perceive how dependence influences the entire individual and people around him or her. Counseling is additionally identified with "Mediation"; a cycle where the fanatic's family and friends and family demand help from an expert to get a person into drug treatment.
This cycle starts with an experts' first objective: separating disavowal of the individual with the compulsion. Refusal suggests absence of ability from the patients or dread to go up against the genuine idea of the habit and to make any move to improve their lives, rather than proceeding with the dangerous conduct. When this has been accomplished, the advisor facilitates with the junkie's family to help them on getting the person to drug rehabilitation promptly, with concern and care for this individual. Something else, this individual will be approached to leave and expect no help of any sort until going into drug rehabilitation or liquor abuse treatment. A mediation can likewise be led in the work environment condition with associates rather than family.
One methodology with restricted relevance is the calm mentor. In this methodology, the customer is adjusted by the provider(s) in their home and working environment—for any adequacy, nonstop—who works a lot of like a caretaker to guide or control the patient's conduct.

Hitching a Ride on the Digital Nomad Express
Late last year, my friend James Clark wrote me to say that VietJet intended to open a direct flight from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to Chiang Mai, Thailand.
He dubbed it “The Digital Nomad Express.”
I LOL’d.
So when it recently came time for a visa run, I decided to buy a ticket.
I was excited for my first return trip to Saigon since 2015. I’ve spent a lot of time in the city over the years, and I wasn’t surprised to find that many things are changing for the better (check out James’ suggestions for the future).
Not surprisingly, the Digital Nomad Express wasn’t so full of digital nomads. The flight was mostly made up of tourists, travelers, business people, students, and monks.
But here’s the thing, even if Digital Nomads were onboard, I’d be having an increasingly difficult time trying to identify them. The remote work lifestyle is starting to go more mainstream.
Nomads are amorphous, transitory, and easy to confuse with entrepreneurs, or expats, or ya know, people doing their thing.
What is it, anyway, that makes a Digital Nomad?
Here’s an idea:
The archetype at the core of the digital nomad identity is that of the backpacker or traveler. So you might say: earn like an entrepreneur or freelancer, and live like a backpacker or traveler and boom: digital nomad.
This helps to explain a lot of things: like why digital nomads generally don’t stay digital nomads for long, or why successful entrepreneurs who simply travel often or live somewhere strange often loath being lumped in with the label. There are many downsides to living life like a traveler.
A lot of digital nomads would make their lives a lot easier if they simply thought of themselves as expats and declared – and invested in – a home. Pick up a book or two about the local history, find a friend or hobby that has something to do with the place you’ve come to, and when somebody asks you how long you’re sticking around just saying “I live here.”
The truth is behind most traveler’s facade there is some kind of home– it’s where they store their stuff and where they go when they’re sick. Maybe it’s their parents place or a friend’s. They’re moving around to fun and cheap cities for a high quality of life, but are still ultimately anchored to somewhere they’re confident the mail will turn up.
Digital Nomads vs. the Location Independent Entrepreneur
The location independent entrepreneur, who lives outside of their home country, takes cues from an expatriate. And those who’ve stayed in their place of birth are simply carving out a way of life that looks much like wealthy people would live a generation before – snowbirding, doing 9 then 3, or simply traveling a great deal for business or leisure.
Anyway, for this one weekend, I wasn’t worried about categories. I was going to digital nomad my face off.
I was in full on travel mode. I traded in what has become a laughable camel caravan of luggage for a sleek carry on only digital nomad setup:
Of course, Saigon and Chiang Mai have long been pillars in the community of readers here at TMBA. The both have a lot of the things entrepreneurs and digital nomads (and now, increasingly, remote workers) love:
Great value for the money.
Easy to get an apartment and basic life amenities setup.
Strong local entrepreneurial culture with cosmopolitan elements to the city.
Nice coffee shops and bars.
And perhaps most importantly, other digital nomads.
Saigon is something of a shrine to capitalism. You can see and feel it everywhere. The energy of the city is hustle. It whispers “make something of yourself.”
You can see it happening in front of your eyes. Look around and you can spot loaves of bread moving through the streets, from baker, to bike taxi, to vendor or restaurant. Look up and you’ll see ambitious construction projects dotting the city.
It’s a funny juxtaposition given all the communist symbols everywhere.
Saigon changes so fast…
Most co-working spaces around the city are populated by locals.
It’s only been three years since I left, but so many things in Saigon have changed.
The first thing I noticed: District 1, the central area, smelled different.
I guess some people might be tempted to say it smells better, but not me.
For me, Vietnam’s cities smell of a unique mix of incense, exhaust, waste, and food being prepared and distributed on the street. In my mind, it’s inextricably tied to career freedom itself.
I know that might sound nuts, but Vietnam was the theatre of a formative travel experience for me in 2001. When I returned to the U.S., it was part of what I dreamed about when peeking over my cubicle wall in 2006, wondering if I’d ever get out.
(I did.)
What started as an adventure in 2008 – returning to Vietnam to source products, hire remote workers, and EAT – has turned into a life. Some of the folks who I went on adventures with have gone on to prove that it’s possible to build wealth and interesting careers while having a great deal of location and time freedom.
The businesses and careers they’ve created would have been very hard to even imagine 10 or 20 years ago, let alone execute. It’s encouraging for me to see so many old friends doing so well, doing things their own way. When you’re building things that are unprecedented – say, insisting that even though you’ve got 100+ employees, you’re going to stay 100% remote, it’s easy to get tempted to replicate the way “experts” did before.
But these folks, some of whom I first met in HCMC, are proving that in this day and age it’s possible to build things on your own terms and, in a small way, contribute to what work and career might look like for others in the future.
***
I spent my first day in Ho Chi Minh city strolling around. I’d missed this. Chiang Mai, for all it’s virtues, isn’t the nicest place for a stroll.
I was excited to see somebody thought it was a good idea to dedicate an entire walking street to book sellers and cafes.
And that the options to caffeinate your journey continue to expand on the already impressive cafe culture:
This was a hot chocolate that had spicy bits and cinnamon.
And of course, I ate. I’d bet the average truck driver in Vietnam is exposed to more delicious food than the average upper middle class American.
My first meal was perhaps, fittingly, my favorite dish of all time. Simply, Pho Bo.
We ensured to stay hydrated.
* **
That evening I caught up with somebody TMBA listeners will be familiar with, David Hehenberger the founder of Fat Cat Apps and Landing Cube.
David was one of the first TMBA Apprentices back in the day, and has since gone on to found 3 successful companies, grow a team, and serve as a mentor for apprentices in his own companies. David’s been based in Saigon for 6 years now, and is one of my favorite people to hang out with. We joked about all sorts of things, and had the nerdy conversations that only internet entrepreneurs can appreciate.
ME: “Have you considered just SWASing your SaaS?”
DAVID: “Funny you mention that, my apprentice suggested such a move last week.”
That evening, instead of going home at a reasonable hour, I took a motorbike taxi to the nightlife walking street of Bui Vien, ground zero for backpackers and travelers in Southern Vietnam. I’m glad I went. It’s changed dramatically, but it’s still the lovable crazy melting pot it’s always been.
The next day, James and I took a walking tour of the Tao Dien area in District 2.
We went in style.
We got to see so many new buildings going up across the city.
When I first moved to Saigon, District 2 was known as the place where expat families who had fancy jobs located to ensure their kids got a access to good schools and lived in large homes in gated communities. What started as a suburb with good housing has gradually morphed into something resembling Seminyak in Bali.
I noticed whiffs of La Jolla, California as I walked past the swish spas, beauty salons, cafes, and eateries with food offerings (Poke, Vegan, BBQ) that Westerners would be well familiar with. James pointed out a Yoga Teacher’s Training School, indicating once and for all that District 2 intends to make Western expats feel right at home.
We (that’s James in the photo) opted to have a fancy brunch with some other entrepreneurs.
I drank a double shot of espresso and three glasses of Champagne. It cost me an arm and a leg! That’s Tao Dien living I suppose.
After a siesta, that walk was hot!, I snuck in a few more bowls of Vietnamese food, which were priced more reasonably. Here’s one of my favorites, a dish from the center of the country called Mi Quang. It’s the “Dac Biet” or special version, meaning in most cases they pull out all the stops. In this case, all the stops were all the fun bits from a chicken plus some delicious Viet style sausages.
James sent me off early on Sunday with a classic breakfast of rice dumplings called Bahn Cuon. We discussed future plans to meetup and spend a week together with other bright folks. I walked with a full stomach and a good deal of insight into the projects I’m working on.
For me, it’s easy to get caught up in a routine and day to day of running a business. Often, I resist the idea of taking a weekend away. My mind often prefers the idea of staying on plan.
In the end though, I rarely regret shaking things up and hopping on a plane.
Sure, I got a little behind on some projects, but what I got was so much more valuable. Adventure, ideas, inspiration, and consolidating friendships.
For me, these are the best part of being a digital nomad. If we agree that the DNA of the nomad comes from generations of travelers, adventurers, and backpackers, then the MO of the digital nomad shouldn’t be finding great places to open a laptop, but finding great places to close them.
Dan

Chiang Mai (New City)
Tumblr media
Since I have a two week break between camp and the start of school, I decided to travel to the north side of the country. This last week I stayed at a place called the Ruen Come In Resort and Spa.  I paid for an all-inclusive yoga retreat at 48,000 baht. Does that sound like a lot? I have never been on a yoga retreat, but I have done a lot of research in the past trying to go to one. In the United States, a 5-7 day yoga retreat can cost upwards of 2,000-4,000 dollars. Usually those deals include accommodations and some meals, but any additional spa treatments or excursions would cost extra. When I booked my retreat for here in Chiang Mai, I knew I was getting a good deal, but just for the fun of it, I am going to try to run some numbers. I apologize in advance for the dryness of this post.
For starters, 48,000 baht is about 1,400 dollars. Already, I am spending a significantly less amount of money for the same thing I would get back in the states. This all inclusive retreat includes 7 nights accommodation, airport pickup & dropoff, all meals (breakfast, lunch, & dinner-- & snacks!) daily yoga and meditation sessions, spa treatments, and excursions into the city. When I arrived at the airport, there was someone holding a sign with my name waiting to take my luggage. It was a short drive to the hotel, where the staff greeted me with fresh coconut juice and gave me an itemized schedule for my week.
Accommodations: Traditional Thai Teak Wood Resort (ruencomein.net)
I paid for a single room, but was upgraded upon arrival at no additional cost to the grand suite. The suite itself is 5,800 baht (~$173) per night. Therefore, seven nights would cost about 40,600 baht (~$1,213).
Meals: Traditional Thai (Vegetarian)
The meals have been very delicious, healthy, and quite filling. I have not eaten outside of the resort once this entire week. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner have all been served with three courses; appetizer, entree, dessert. Also, they give me fresh pressed juices and coconut water daily. I am just guessing on the pricing here, but let’s say that each meal costs between 200-300 baht (~$6-9). Multiply that 3x a day over 7 days and you get 4200-6300 baht (~$125-188) for the week.
Yoga & Meditation:
6 private yoga sessions and 3 private meditation sessions. One yoga class here costs 350 baht (~$10) and I doubt the hour long meditation sessions cost that much, but I can’t find a price, so let’s just say the same for private mediations sessions. For the week, 3150 baht (~$94).
Spa Treatments:
I have been spoiled rotten by this beautiful tiny Thai woman who has been my therapist this week. After every massage, she braids my hair and takes pictures with me. Then, she brings me hot tea with a small snack and leaves by giving me a hug and a kiss. I love this woman!
Tumblr media
1 Aromatherapy (1500 baht) ~$44
2 Traditional Classic Thai Massage (1200 baht each) ~$70
2 Aromatic Oil Massage (1700 baht each) ~$100
1 Reflexology (900 baht) ~$26
Sauna session (no price)
1 Facial and Skin Nourishing bath (no price)
1 Body Scrub & Massage (no price)
Excursions:
Private Van and Guided Tour of Doi Suthep Temple (1600 baht) ~$47
I got to visit the most famous and historical temple in Chiang Mai. I learned about Buddhism, Temples, Monk Hood, Beliefs and other relevant topics. It was a really nice experience. I learned a lot and really got me thinking about the Buddhist culture and made me want to know more.
Chiang Mai Historic Bike Tour (1250 baht) ~$37
This is a super old city with a very rich history. I was fascinated! My tour guide, Gun, was so patient with me while I asked a million questions about the Buddha, monks, and Chiang Mai history. After visiting Doi Suthep I had a ton of questions and he really helped me understand a lot of different things. I will work on another post about my perception of Buddhism for another day.
Thai Cooking Class (1500 baht) ~$44
This was a special experience in which I was taken to a market to buy ingredients to make traditional Thai meals. I got to choose what I wanted to make, so I chose Pad Thai, Green Curry, and Tom Kha (Coconut soup). I also got to make a dessert, so I chose to make sticky rice with mango which has quickly become my favorite treat here in Thailand!
The class was about 4 hours long and the teacher walked us through all of the steps from grinding up the curry paste to crushing up our own coconut sugar. Afterward, we had to eat all the food. That was challenging!
So overall, I could have paid close to 60,500-62,600 baht (~$1,805-1,868) if I had paid for each individual item. So, the way I see it is that, I saved just over $400 by booking the inclusive deal.
Man! That was kind of exhausting.  I don’t like crunching numbers, but I was curious about the value I was getting, so there it is. I got a really good deal for the amount of things I got to do in while in Chiang Mai. I spent most of my time in the spa and yoga room just relaxing, but I also got to go out and see the city. Outside of the resort, I went to some cool bars and big markets. I really enjoyed my time there and I know it won’t be my last.
Now, time to enjoy my time in Pai.
Love,
Moonflower

Meet Chrissie, the new Education Abroad Assistant
Holler all!
Tumblr media
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The sky is blue. The rocks are contrasted with a hue of red. Chrissie ie in the middle. She is smiling, and leaning a bit. ]
I am your new Education Abroad Assistant! Let’s get to know me first. I resides in the coastal mountains of Vancouver of Canada. I am a graduate student, pursuing Master’s Art in International Development. My career goal is to advocate and promote equity of various right issues for people with disabilities at non-profit organizational level. In my free time, I enjoy the appreciation of doing art. Sometimes, I like to do yoga or go hiking if I actually can stop procrastinating.
Growing up, I always had incredible curiosity about the world. In my own free time, I would explore every inch of the map, or learn new words from another foreign language. I like to absorb and gain global perspectives whenever I travel to new places. It is a big world out there, go figures.
At the age of 19, as having recently entering the young adult world, I was frightened by the idea of limiting myself in boring life commitments, I just wanted to travel and find my passion somewhere. I decided to take a semester break from Gallaudet. In three months, I have successfully traveled to 12 European countries solo. I still grasp at this fact today. This journey was an unforgettable experience, along with personal growth, lessons and growing appreciation of the world. I could tell you so much stories about my experience traveling solo.
Tumblr media
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Sky is cloudy. The view is at the top of Budapest with East European old buildings far away. Chrissie is sitting on pieces of bricks. She is smiling directly front of the camera. She is wearing glasses, with short blonde hair. She is wearing a grey shirt and blue jeans with latched leather purse on the right..]
November 2014. My first traveling experience solo in Budapest, Hungary. This photo was also taken a few hours before my passport got stolen. The aftermath was no fun. Do secure your passport at all time, please.
Tumblr media
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The sky is merely cloudy. The photo appears to be slightly fisheye, shot with a GoPro. View seem to be tiny, from 10,000 feet up in the air. Chrissie appears to smile largely due to the extreme wind lifting up her smile. She is wearing a transparent goggle. A male instructor is latched behind her. ]
January 2016. This was taken in Manaus, Brazil where I had the amazing enchanting experience of skydiving from 10,000 feet above in the air. How scary.
Tumblr media
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Instagram-filtered of a classroom. There is a black chalk board, with Thai written words above the board in the background. Chrissie, in her black teacher attire, is smiling with tongue slightly sneaking out. Two young female students in white and pink uniform are also smiling with her. They are all signing ILY.]
July 2017. This was taken during my undergraduate internship in Chiang May, Thailand.
Education is the centerpiece of any study abroad trip. It is a enchanting experience and it is also all about personal development. You grow fonder of the cultures and knowledge you have. You gain new perspectives. You learn something new about yourself, perhaps, discovering a career interest,
From my experience with study abroad and traveling, meeting new people is one of the best part. You will find that you have a better understanding and appreciation for the nation’s people and history. You will have the opportunity to witness a completely new way of life. So, whenever I travel to a new country, I will visit a deaf school, or deaf clubs, or reach out to social medias where I can meet up with others who are deaf like us. I learned International Sign to communicate with deaf people in other countries. IS is universal! Can you believe that? In this new generation of interconnected worlds of deaf communities, we can easily communicate with each other through IS. Definitely a #deafgain thing.
Why study abroad? For most students, this time may be the only opportunity they ever get to travel abroad for a long period of time. Eventually you will find a job and career, and the opportunity to study abroad may turn out to be a once in a life time opportunity.
You probably have encountered many rants by older adults where they regretted that they did not travel back in their earlier years. So, what is stopping you? It is a lifetime experience. Take this opportunity to travel the world with no commitments but to study and learn about new cultures. Studying abroad is an experience unlike any other.
Holler at me if you are curious and interested in knowing more information about study abroad, international internships or travel tips!

Thumbs Of Steel
Day 3 (part 2)
Traditional Thai massages hurt. They hurt like the masseuse is angry at me. Like I disrespected their mother in High School and they’ve been nursing a revenge fantasy ever since.
Massage spots litter Thailand. Walk a block in any city in any direction and you’ll likely pass at least one.
An hour-long massage costs about 200 to 600 bhat. That’s roughly $6 on the low end, $18 on the high. Hour-long massages in the states run at least $50, and can range from $100 to $200 if they’re upscale. They are waaaaaaay cheaper here.
Lisa and I decided to try our first full body traditional Thai massage in Chiang Mai at the picturesque Fah Lanna Spa.
Tumblr media
Lanna looks like a zen Garden of Eden. It’s all garden paths, jungle plants, wooden bridges over burbling ponds, and massive coi fish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After we signed up, lisa and I were led upstairs by our masseuses to a quiet, dark-wood room. The masseurs — two women in their 40s or 50s — gestured for us to change into a pair of loose-fitting drab robes. After dressing, we laid face down on a pair of thin mattresses positioned side by side on the floor.
Then the massage started.
Legend has it that Thai massage was invented over 2,500 years ago by Shivago Komarpaj, an ancient doctor-to-the-stars, who was personal physician to the Buddha.
Reality is a bit less sensational, but in some ways more interesting.
Historically, Buddhist temples were the place locals visited for all types of healing — medical as well as spiritual. Massage was seen as just one more kind of medicine and was practiced and taught within those temples.
There’s evidence of this at Wat Pho (the temple in Bangkok that houses the enormous reclining buddha). Scrawled on the walls of the Wat are murals depecting Thai massage techniques. The murals date back to the early 1800s.
Because of TTM’s close ties to the buddhist religion, there’s a spiritual sheen surrounding the practice today.
At the start of most massages, the masseuse presses his or her hands together in prayer and bows, giving thanks to Komarpaj — the fabled creator of TTM — for passing this tradition down through generations.
After the bow though, all bets are off.
I am a lump of dough and my masseuse, Joy, is the rolling pin.
She rotates my head delicately between her palms. She digs a black wooden stick into the bottoms of my feet, which hurts but leaves a lasting warmth. She yanks each of my arms until my shoulders pop.
Then, she positions her iron thumb on a pressure point near the tendon in my elbow joint and presses, leaving her finger digging into my skin until pain begins to drip down the length of my forearm.
10 seconds pass. The pain continues. I breath. It doesn’t help much.
Laying next to me, Lisa lets out a contented sigh. I wonder if her masseuse isn’t playing fast and loose with her body like it’s a hand-me-down GI-Joe, like mine seems to be.
Tumblr media
At some point during the massage I complain about neck pain, thinking Joy will stay away from those areas. Instead, she locks me into a Muay Thai-style hold and presses her metal thumbs into the tendons in my neck. Her fingers feel like ball bearings. I squirm under her grip, fighting the urge to leap away. The pain is so excruciating I think I might scream.
After 30 minutes of soothing, deep muscle rubs, and intensely painful pressure point work, Joy asks me to sit up. I do and she squats behind me, placing her knees under my arm pits. She reaches under my arms, interlaces her fingers behind the back of my head, and whispers, “relax.”
I’m scared, but not about to disobey. I go limp. She begins twisting my torso over her left knee, like I’m a bottle cap she’s trying to pop off a root beer. She eases my right shoulder towards the mat while, at the same time, folds me calmly over her knee.
The embrace is alarmingly intimate, like two wrestlers intertwined seconds before a match. I twist and twist, feeling a warmth growing in my lower back and then suddenly I hear a sharp POP burst from a part of my side I didn’t even know existed and an incredible, rag-doll feeling spreads through my entire body. I laugh out loud, partly from the surprise burst of endorphins, but mostly from the ridiculousness of having a total stranger wring me out like a dish towel. At least get to know me first.
A few more of those twists and pops and the massage is over.
Lisa and I rise, blinking like babies waking from deep slumber. She smiles lazily. “Wow” is all she can say.
A roll my head. The tension in my neck is completely gone. My body feels warm and alive, like I’ve just been through a strenuous yoga class. And, in a real way, we have been.
Tumblr media
(A sign hanging in the spa, which I loved.)
As amazing as we felt after the massage, after a few more tries at TTM, Lisa and I both decided to stick with foot, hand, and oil massages, which go easier on the tendon pushing/joint pulling and focus more on good ole muscle rubbin’. More what we’re used to.
TTM is an invigorating, sometimes painful, full-body workout. The effects can be amazing, but sometimes it’s nice to just lie on a cushioned table, listen to the muzak of Kenny G, and shut your brain off — especially when you’re on honeymoon.
After the massage, we decided to head to Chaing Mai’s Sunday Walking Street, a chain of connected roads that transform into a food and vendor market every Sunday night. The walking street is located in Chaing Mai’s downtown and passes a dozen Wats, some massive, most small. It’s a parade of colorful lights and exotic smells, all in front of towering golden Wat’s housing giant Buddha statues.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the walking street was insanely packed and miserable. Shoulder to shoulder with thousands of locals and travelers, inching along on cramped streets, it took five minutes to walk a single block.
Tumblr media
After a long day of travel and luxurious massage, we’d forgotten to eat. We were both hungry and getting pissed off from moving at a snails pace through throngs of shoppers.
We headed towards Huen Phew, a legendary Thai restaurant. Unfortunately, the wait was an hour for a table. (We also saw an enormous rat scurry into the restaurant while we waited.)
We pushed back into the walking street crowd towards a backup spot called Kaow Tom 1฿, a no-frills open air joint locals love.
Tumblr media
After crawling for 15 minutes through the hoard, we made it. The front of the restaurant overlooks the flood of people pushing down walking street. Unsurprisingly, this place was also packed, but packed with Thais. We took it as a good sign and put our names down.
After 10 minutes we got a table, sat, and immediately ordered the khao soi.
Khao soi is the pride of northern Thailand. The dish is made of boiled egg noodles dunked in a spicy, coconut-milk curry, with pickled veggies, chicken or tofu, topped with deep-friend crispy egg noodles.
Tumblr media
The dish is unlike anything I’d ever tasted. Sweet and spicy with a strong coconut undercurrent. Tender noodles in curry thick with tangy veggies and tofu. The fried noodles add a savory crunch to the whole mix. Totally unique.
The reason you come to Thailand is to eat dishes like this, and to see happy faces like this when you do.
Tumblr media
From hangry to “ahhhh” in khao soi.
