Hey I just want to know something: am I the stupidest person on the planet or the f1 fandom is built differently?
Everytime I go on a social media to look up f1 content I see cute/horny (let's be honest) edits and everybody calling the drivers pookie or making memes. And that's alright, I guess.
I most definitely know that a bunch of (mostly white) men in a very competitive male-dominated sport rooted more than many others in capitalism are probably going to have scandals around them. I am not that dumb. I also know that because probably none of them is scandal-free and people who get crushes/hyperfixation on them just learn to live with them, but I didn't think they just...ignored them? Swept them under the rug? Let me explain.
When I so much as stumble on a TikTok with a song by The 1975 or McCafferty- or hell even Lovejoy recently- I see comments flooding with "bUt DoN't YoU kNoW tHeY'rE pRoBlEmAtIC?". Same happened with content about cinema or books. And on Tumblr happens less but still happens. As soon as you mention something that has ties with sexism, racism, homophobia, etc. people will soon point it out to you. Maybe because they're some of those people with the obsession of only consuming "morally pure" content, maybe they genuinely want to inform you, maybe they fucking hate that song/book/movie and want to give YOU a reason to dislike it.
But can someone tell me if I'm fucking dumb and I managed to stumble in the wrong part of instagram/tumblr/TikTok or NOBODY fucking talks about the shit some drivers have done? Because I am stumbling on a LOT of shit done by drivers I really liked lately even though I have been interested in F1 for a while now. Not too long, but enough that I think I would have heard some stuff.
Like, if I spent like 6 months on the hashtag of Guy Who Drives, why am I now finding out that they said something really discriminatory? I am just confused, I simply thought it would have popped out sooner, but apparently it was buried under 500+ posts about their abs? Like what?
I get that anyway it's not like you can cancel a driver, no matter what shit they say they'll probably still going to be racing the next weekend, but why people don't talk about it? Was my socials' fault for showing me horny posts everytime I simply looked up the name of a guy or do people don't talk about this stuff in the f1 community because "what are you gonna do anyway"?
I am leaning towards the second option because there are a few things that happened while I was already watching f1 (not in order: Lando's comments about, Trump, Hornergate, most drivers saying Hornergate was just noise) and at first people were talking about it but then they just...stopped? Like, I don't know, personally the words of disenterest many drivers expressed about Hornergate made me change my opinion about them at least a little and people seemed so outraged at first but now...it's like it never happened. Everybody back thirsting on main for Ricciardo, Norris, etc.
Genuine question, is the general response of the f1 community to these behaviours "forgive and forget in time of the next gp"? Am I missing something? I don't think they should be crucified but why I have not seen more people talking about this stuff? The "serious sport bunch" seems to be uninterested in "gossip" or whatever happens outsid the tracks, the good old fashioned fandom is writing fanfiction/making edits/funny posts, who keeps tracks of this stuff?
I have never been interested in a sport before. In the artistic world (cinema, literature, etc.) some scandals can get you out of a job and a long lasting hatred from the community. In motorsports, because the success of a driver does not depend from his fans' engagement but can be "objectively proved" by results and victories, do people just...make peace with the fact that some athletes are pieces of shit?
I want to specify it one more time, I am NOT saying LET'S CANCEL ALL THE DRIVERS AND BOO THEM BECAUSE THEY HAVE DONE SOMETHING QRONG AT SOME POINT, I am asking:
how do you deal when an athlete you cheer for does something really fucked up, and you know other athletes in the same field are no saints?
#yes this was prompted by sad discoveries about kimi räikkönen#like fuck I could find so many fucking useless anecdotes about him and NOTHING about the sa allegations or the merch?#which then prompyed a research about kimi's other controversies which brought up controversies from other drivers#I am sorry I understand if I sound naive but please understand this is the first time I get into a sport#and again the world of literature of cinema for exmaple os very different because not even considering the whole cancel culture#but just at school or university professors say like 'yo this is a very important book from a very important author but hey it also happens#to be racist so pay attention to that'#I guess I didn't expect too much fucked up stuff from kimi because he was (still is? I think?) seb's friend#and look what I know about Seb is that that man advocated for the environment women and the LGBQTIA+ community#so maybe I thought a stupid thing and didn't think he would such a close friend of someone who had those sort of allegations#I thought the stupid thing#f1#formula 1#controversies#also me looking up 'x driver controversies' on this hellsite because google is useless anyway#(and often journalists do not label as controversies shit that definitely is controversial)#tumblr results: being x driver controversial young girlfriend#SEE WHAT I MEAN#btw thanks lewis hamilton for existing I guess and not giving me heart attacks bc even where you've done wrong you apologised and grew up#which not many drivers seem to do

I don't actually want the series/movie to happen because it feels like it will just be another dissapointment (think pjo). If they make anything, I'd prefer it to be animated (because let's be honest, I don't think you can pull off people dissapearing and slinking around without looking foolish and bad, when using actual people)

it’s so fucking funny watching people get so bent out of shape by something so minuscule.
my grandma got so fucking mad because we’re singing hanukkah songs in choir, like okay? what do you want me to do about it? it’s a good thing we’re singing those songs and being inclusive. it’s a good thing to show that december isn’t just about christmas. like it’s just so stupid listening to not even just my grandparents, but just people in general being so upset about people saying “happy holidays” over merry christmas. like all you have to do is say thank you. literally just say thank you. if you don’t celebrate the holiday that someone’s wishing you well on? you don’t need to go full fledged karen and get your dick in a knot. it’s not hard to just say thank you and move on without making it such a big thing.
people are gonna celebrate other holidays, and that’s okay! that’s wonderful! people SHOULD be able to freely celebrate whatever they want without having to be shut down by assholes who think they can gatekeep december because of one day of the year (christmas). like come on.
my grandma didn’t even show up to last years winter choir concert because we sang a song for hanukkah. that made me so pissed. like the world doesn’t revolve around a certain group. the world is a melting pot of so many cultures and people and thats okay!
i just hate when people get so upset about something as harmless as someone wishing you a happy holiday, whether you celebrate or not. it’s the thought that counts.

ill never actually be over the time a writer mutual came to me for help figuring out how saren would still be the big bad in her no-reapers au, because i was and still am considered The™️ saren arterius expert (it's the autism)
and when i told her "he wouldn't be, because in no-reapers his brother wouldn't be dead so he'd have no reason to be a villain, because his motivation is grieving the death of his brother" she fucking ignored everything i said and insisted on forcing him into the role with the most hamfisted reasoning ive seen in a while lmfao

I saw that you read The Ones We Burn by Rebecca Mix this year and you enjoyed it. I've seen a number of people saying that its racist and antisemitic, but I noticed that a lot of those reviews are based on a twitter review that came out quite a while before the book itself. I've also seen more recent reviews (after the book was released) from both Black and Jewish readers stating those claims are false. Did you find anything like that during your read through?
Not gonna lie, as soon as I mentioned that I'd read The Ones We Burn I know someone was going to come into my ask box and ask this question so I've been waiting for something like this.
In short: No. I did not find anything like this. I am a black woman, and I did not find anything racist towards black people in this book (and I've read the HP books, I have a good idea of what racism looks and feels like in writing lmao).
Not gonna lie, this book was on my TBR list for ages and I pre-ordered, and when everything came out I was ridiculously disappointed by the number of people who would go out and slander/cancel a book without reading it simply because someone lied. And I was especially disappointed in the black people who went online and started rallying to cancel the book. The whole "reverse racism" claim was a lie, the two main characters are black because, spoiler, their mother is black and their mother was a witch from another coven (so not a white people in power constantly thing; I'm due a reread to confirm this, though). Not only that, but they're surrounded by rich white people the whole time, and there are witches with different ethnicities/skin tones throughout the whole book. I could not find ANYTHING suggesting racism or reverse racism in this book and for someone to imply that without having read the book is absolutely obtuse. (I also absolutely HATE cancel culture because some of the people I've seen get cancelled by people spreading rumours and lies. Absolutely ridiculous.)
As for the antisemitism claim, I didn't spot any of that in the book either but I actually went to research that because I wanted to know exactly what people not on twitter were saying, and I found this review which was pretty long and has links. I didn't find any, and neither did this Jewish reviewer.
Honestly, there were a lot of reviews about the book before it even came out, and even though ARCs were sent out I get the vibe that not many (if any) of the readers actually posted any of those reviews attacking the book. All those reviews came from people who were talking about another review and basically saying "this was on my tbr but because xxx said racism and antisemitism I'm taking it off bye", which isn't how reviews work but go off I guess. It got tanked on goodreads for what I believe was a couple of lying or jealous reviews that everyone jumped on as true. And people actually thought it was okay to bully someone off the Internet and send them death threats? And don't sensitivity readers usually get called in to prevent this happening when the book comes out? Sensitivity readers were called in on this book. It just baffles me that so many people cancelled the book so quickly based on a couple of pre-release reviews and probably aren't even looking at the post-release reviews because they think they've done their job or some dumb shit like that.
Anyway tl;dr: No, I didn't find any racism in the book, and any claims of racism in the book from before the release should be taken with a pinch of salt, imo. Or a load of it. The affected communities need to actually look to reviewers from their communities post-release and see what they're saying before attacking, and they certainly shouldn't be attacking before having the chance to form their own opinions.
Anyway, people are gonna come after me for this but I've said what I've said and I believe it. I've stayed away from making comments online mostly because I 1) would probably not be heard online because I tend to stay in my little corner for the sake of my own mental health; and 2) know that people are stubborn once they've formed their own opinions and didn't want to say anything before reading the book myself.

i just still dont get people saying (now including ranboo themselves) "it got to this point because ranboo kept being vague when talking about it" like... no it got to this point because people are racist. and (as ranboo also did acknowledge) will likely keep being racist because this stream isnt really going to have as much of an impact as it would ideally (because racist people arent just being racist because they think streamer is okay with it. they are being racist because they are racist.)

Deeply pissed off by accusatory and condescending ask. You're free to correct me but not lecture me. I'm a person with triggers too. Entirely too exhausted to even figure out what you're saying with two essay length asks that equate mental illness stigma with genocidal colonization and also acting like my mutual doesn't have schizophrenia themselves. Please unfollow if you can't explain things without sending me condescending missives about how you're disappointed in me and I should know better and I post "deeply harmful" tags. I am too busy scraping the bottom of the barrel to live up to whatever standards of moral social justice behaviour you think I should follow. I am also utterly traumatized by my 17 years in the psychiatric complex, I am also in a mental health crisis and struggling with bipolar. Neither I nor my OCD appreciate it.
Edit: okay nevermind, after seeing what this person reblogged in response to my mutual's post I have blocked them. Holy shit the vitriol and name-calling. Absolutely no.

we're reading to kill a mockingbird with my older teens and one of them did a whole in depth google search on the correct terminology to use when speaking about poc to avoid being racist accidentally when speaking about the book and shared it w all their classmates even before we started discussing the chapters in class 😭 I was going to tell them how they can't use the n word even when they just want to retell what the characters are saying and stuff but he literally did it all and shared it on our google classroom 🤧🤧🤧
