Zhang Huan 張洹
To Add One Meter to an Anonymous Mountain 為無名山增高一米 (1995
This photograph documents a performance in which ten artists, led by Zhang Huan, use their bodies to add one metre to Miaofeng Mountain near Beijing. The naked artists lie on top of each other, with the lightest on top, forming a mountain-like structure on a dry grassy patch of ground. A mountainous landscape cloaked in fog is in the background. The participating artists were Wang Shihua, Cang Xin, Gao Yang, Zuoxiao Zuzhou, Ma Zongyin, Zhang Huan, Ma Liuming, Zhang Binbin, Duan Yingmei, and Zhu Ming. All were part of the Beijing East Village community, an avant-garde group formed in the early 1990s. The performance was also documented on video. For Zhang and his East Village colleagues, the body is the most direct form of communication. While the bodies here alter the landscape temporarily, they also acknowledge their own insignificance in relation to the magnitude of nature. This image became the most iconic representation of the work of the Beijing East Village artists.

BLOGMAS Day 5: The Artist is an Explorer curated by Marina Abramovic
For Fridays during Blogmas, I figured I’d do something a little different. So I’ll be linking videos now that tickle my fancy.
EDIT: I realized I didn’t expound on this much. My favorites in this series were Melati Suryodamo’s “I Love You” and Yingmei Duan’s “Passing By.” Feels personal to me, somehow.

Yingmei Duan
Born in China, Yingmei Duan is part of the Chinese avant-garde. She worked as a painter for many years living in the legendary art district of Beijing’s East Village. In 1995 she participated in the performance To add one meter to an anonymous mountain, which is considered to be one of the classics of Chinese modern art. She became a pure performance artist under the influence of Marina Abramović, with whom she studied at the HBK Braunschweig in Germany from 2000 to 2004. There, she also worked for one year with the filmmaker and action artist Christoph Schlingensief.
Yingmei Duan showed who she was by narrating her experiences and explaining her artistic work, creating a story between object and subject, between the memories of the past and the present, in order to set a link between art and life, one of the main objectives in her works. This connection between the artist’s life and her creations was one of the outstanding elements in the dialogue she later set with the critic and curator of Asian art, Katie Hill. The performative conference combined the artist speech with audio-visual samples from her performances, material to interact with the audience and several sound elements that went with the narration of the story.

The body workshop 1
In this workshop we were introduced to performance art. At first thought, performance is expected to be fluid like dance or narrative/scripted like acting but this is now always the case.
one on one - k foundation
(A series of performances taking place in a single room, split into seperate installation spaces, experience each performance one to one - que to get in)
David explained the one to one exhibition he attended in 2012. Seeing some of the performances that took place at this exhibition broaded my mind set to what performance art can be. It doesnt even have to involve the artist but can be based pureplt on how the audience react in certain situations and i find this really intriguing.
Some of the artist include:
Hans-Peter Feldmann - testing can i take a milky bar?
Annika Kahrs - awkwardly stop playing piano when you enter the room
FORT group - noisey fridge, creepy horror like set
Joe Coleman - watching the artist paint. Dark room, spot light on him
Yoko Ono - waiting for the phone to ring
Nina Beier - 'potato, potato' (2012)
Robert Kusmirowski - basement. Desert Island (paradise), corpses underneath
History
We also looked into the history of performance art and how it became popularised by the dada movements explorations of sound expanding from poetry to entertain as well express.
Some interesting performance artists theoughout history untik presant day include:
Dada performance groups - Hugo Ball (1919) - interest in sounds of technology, formed poetry.
Yoko Ono - 'cut piece' (1965) - invited audience to come over and cut off her clothing.
Kiera Orliey (1967) - based on duchamps decenting the stair case, slow motion. The physical strength to hold positions
Yingmei Duan (1969) 'paradise' - paper white room, always presant in her work
Marina Ambramovic
-durational performances and changing mindset to deal with it
-naked body in doorway
-screaming at eachother
-1minute staring at audience member (2010)
-working with lady gaga
Following this workshop, we are expected to direct our out performative art pieces of 10 minutes long. The inspirational videos, along with other prior knoleges of artists gave me a few ideas. The theme of the body is easy t9 link as performance requires a presences and interaction. However i may find it difficult forming a narrative that related to my subtheme of body confidence. As i dont want to be the performer myself, the first step will be to find a model/actor to take on the roll for me.
