@amarguerite tagged me in the 9 books for 2025 meme. I've been meaning to read all my books for a while, so i'm considering this an incentive.
(All images are photos of the covers of the mentioned books)
The Book of the City of Ladies, Christine de Pizan
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/304e1bcf86f95d7b2656d113c5c4c611/2df20fa76b6ad7e3-c5/s540x810/6d6aaeef00542717fe9e9ff20ce3c1fe4f8108a5.jpg)
Got this for Christmas ages ago and never got around to it. A lot of the books on my list are heavy, and while this one won't be easy reading, I'm hoping it'll be interesting without being slightly soul-crushing.
The Social Life of Stories, Julie Cruikshank
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/0be7fa731091631ddccf0f3da0dbda07/2df20fa76b6ad7e3-4d/s540x810/c3e2f2aa999899b0bef0ef45c3a27a7596a7b310.jpg)
This is a reread, but it's really, really good and it's been too long since I revisited it. Like many of my books, it was assigned for a class, although this one was undergrad so I didn't get around to actually reading it until the class was over.
A People's History of the United States, Howard Zinn
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/43b7b6b88bc8f85f354f48f5e63fd353/2df20fa76b6ad7e3-69/s540x810/b5a78318cb75588dee4ff5c77e3d169e0c90b1e2.jpg)
This one's a classic, and I've read lots of excerpts, but never got around to reading the whole thing
How Forests Think, Eduardo Kohn
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/30af1f30481dae2fcf000b7350ebe2b6/2df20fa76b6ad7e3-5f/s540x810/78d0f215b06035237ca856d8961c5a80c8dfd882.jpg)
I'll be real with you all, I hated this book. I thought it was pretentiously done and way less than the sum of its parts. But I really *wanted* to like it, so I'm giving it another shot. If nothing else, my snarky margain notes from last time may be fun.
Orientalism, Edward Said
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4cc911ff057f68f9033e2b0eb0efba93/2df20fa76b6ad7e3-45/s540x810/ad94cd382c968497b529571690e69476f9747193.jpg)
I have read about half this book. It is not a book meant to be read in 15-minute intervals while on a bus though, so I'm hoping a more structured reading environment will make it stick better.
Number, Tobias Dantzig
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b192364847da023b98a46c54ffd388f4/2df20fa76b6ad7e3-b7/s540x810/1c546cb4523726152f687e9c83d74dfafc4d9c0c.jpg)
I was promised this was fun. I hope that is true. I love the idea of math even if the actual execution has never been my strong point.
Europe and the People Without History, Eric Wolf
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/5c727e570658d36f7bf09a3456feef48/2df20fa76b6ad7e3-c9/s540x810/7b56fc63308e38cde61e587c3abe307a6d8946da.jpg)
Another classic that I've read chapters of but never the full book. I remember enjoying the heck out of the authorial voice, so I'm looking forward to it.
Thames the Biography, Peter Ackroyd
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/33f0e40c8a50541b458f8bf238c13370/2df20fa76b6ad7e3-bd/s540x810/d8d4b8cba70712ef0198bd1d2df861e7084c3974.jpg)
Another for fun book. I'm hoping its tone is more historian and less journalist. I struggle with pop history's insistence on writing history as if it was a novel.
Watch Me Play, T.L. Taylor
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6c79ae5f7eaa1c1d8c92c87cfa74fe96/2df20fa76b6ad7e3-50/s540x810/b2719a654f48e6321cc317e88246ca531fc7495c.jpg)
This will be either very fun or kind of insufferable. I'll let you know which when I get to it!
#thoughts from the fire escape#Long post#Sorry half the pictures are sideways#I promise i didn't take them any differently#Yes it's all nonfiction#I don't have the emotional bandwidth for narrative atm

Replenishing the Nonfiction Stack; or, We're Calling the Book Buying Ban a Wash, Officially.
I am not, apparently, immune to coupons for niche nonfiction that's directly up my alley (octopus minds and RUSSIAN OWLS, hello??? Thanks, bookshop!).
I thought perhaps the BURGLAR'S GUIDE would also be covered under said coupon, since it was publisher-specific (alas: it was Not, but we might as well bundle for shipping purposes). And then while I was shopping IRL for gifties I found a copy of ROOM, which has been on my list for...ever? So! Hopefully these will hold me over on the nonfiction front for a minute!
#books#book photography#nonfiction#tbr#a burglar's guide to the city#geoff manaugh#a room of one's own#virginia woolf#other minds#peter godfrey-smith#owls of the eastern ice#jonathan c. slaght#it was an FSG/Picador coupon that bookshop sent me lol#and i knew burglar's guide was also FSG but apparently the coupon was only for Specific Books on their List#(owls and minds)#so. those were impulse buys.#burglar's lowkey was too tbh#ROOM was 'if i cannot literally buy myself a room of my own right now i will purchase this book about it'#(the housing market will be the death of me i stg)#i saw a snippet from burglar's on this hellsite and thought 'ah architecture and thievery YES please'#seriously all my niche interests right here lolol#and yeah okay i really did think i was going to moderate a book ban (read 5 buy 1)#but i've been failing at that since. january. and i will not catch up at this stage :(#so we'll just call that dead to the world and pretend it didn't ever exist :)#ANYWAY PLEASE BEHOLD MY PRETTY BOOKS!!!#i had a spine shot but i didn't love what it did to the photoset composition lol#might as well post that separately here i goooo

the really baffling thing re: writing process is that in college I DID write two entire novels that I wrote (mostly) chapter by chapter (I would often write ahead and then have to go back and slog through whatever chapter I was "supposed" to be working on so that I could post it), but then sometime after 2011 my brain was like, "you are never going to do that ever again" and that was the end of that
#and it was right for it. unfortunately#like...did I write two entire novels? yes. are they structurally sound at all? absolutely not#in both cases I knew the ending I was writing toward so it was better than it could have been#(I pretty much always know the ending I'm writing toward when I start fiction. rough ending and themes will carry me through somehow)#([except when they don't])#but boy. what's going on with the structure and pacing in both those novels.#viscerally remembered that there's a chapter of 24 where someone blows up a public toilet. I'm going to memory hole this immediately.#Queenie actually says something on this blog#parallelism palooza: the journey#unfortunately for my advisor there was never a point at which I could write nonfiction like a normal person#no outlines. no sense of structure. that will come AFTER I have written all the content and not a second before.

are we really back to "oh you support (blank)? name ten people who (do/are) that right now or else youre lying for allyship points and everything you have to say should be disregarded". i thought we left that back in like. 2012 misogynist nerdbro culture
#i have seen it on two entirely separate topics lately and its like. hello?????#'if you cant name 10 trans authors off the top of your head you shouldnt be talking about trans issues full stop.#i dont think thats an unreasonable expectation for anyone wanting to engage in rational discourse' how about we all go outside#because like yeah i couldnt name you too many trans authors but given my transgenderismness i think i do in#fact still deserve a seat at the table. and i dont think there should be a prerequisite academic education level to be allowed to talk.#'but you could find them for free-' yes‚ you can‚ but people should still be allowed to a) choose what they read based#off of what interests them and not mildly-to-extremely dense nonfiction writing and still Talk About Their Own Lives And Have#Opinions#shockingly not reading a lot of one specific type of author doesnt prevent a person from having reasonable and valuable opinions#if youre not capable of parsing someones argument because theyre not well-read enough then that just imo means you dont actually understand#the things youve read to be able to give them a synopsis#this isnt school. we're not being graded. there is no required reading and you are perfectly capable of giving people an#explanation on your stances if theyre unfamiliar with them#i had a b) but i dont remember what it was‚ i think it probably was part of what i covered there that i thought was a separate thought#but yeah just like. idk you can just say 'hey i would really recommend reading xyz but to summarize‚ (thing that disproves them)'#it is not . difficult to either Explain yourself or‚ if that is not possible‚ Not be condescending to the person youre not willing to teach#for not knowing#ill stop there bc ive already done that ramble before but. yes#origibberish#edit: ok upon reread i got turned around and switched from addressing the less educated one conveying their arguments#to the more well read one#bc that was the b is i was gonna talk about both#yall get what i mean though just like. split it in half and flip it turnways

I mean sure, I can understand this perspective, but I'm not sure whether most people feel less shaken to be thrust into conversations about "self-unaliving" than conversations about "suicide"
and I for one as a survivor would much rather unexpectedly encounter somebody talking about "rape" than somebody talking about how funny it is to have sex with somebody when they don't want to, a normal thing that doesn't need to be named because it's So Normal.
which is to say. this is a post about words. the words are not the distressing thing about the discussion. the distressing thing is the distressing thing about the discussion. sugarcoating, dodging or renaming the distressing thing doesn't make it less distressing but it DOES often make it harder to have a frank discussion about it or address it in serious terms.
[pinch of salt: solid probability from their blog that this person is a Literal 14 Year Old and the perspective from 30 and 14 are very different. I do stand by all the points I'm making but I think this conversation lands a lot different for people at different life stages - there is something to be said for the general issue that the internet has flattened social groups to the degree that I as a 30 year old can make a post to my audience of largely adult millennials that immediately enters the same conversational space as people half my age and still in school. that seems. ungreat. as the primary way we engage in conversation. but I don't have solutions to offer.]
you gotta be able to say "die"
you gotta be able to say "suicide"
you gotta be able to talk about "sex"
they're uncomfortable topics, YEAH for SURE
because LIFE is uncomfortable. Death and suicide and sex and pain are straight up going to happen. not having words for the way it discomforts you doesn't make it more comfortable, it just makes you less able to reach out about it.
even more vital, you gotta be able to say words like "rape", "abuse", "queer" or "racist". cause we fought fucking hard to name those experiences. to identify "rape" as distinct from "sex" and "racism" as distinct from "acceptable behaviour" and "queer" as distinct from "invert"
like the function of communication is not to minimise immediate discomfort. we gotta be able to talk about stuff that's hard or sucks or causes difficult conversations.
#red said#i also wholeheartedly disagree with the rest of your post#all entertainment is political. all of it. because politics is the models we use to describe how we interact as a community#and art is inherently communal. so it's inherently political.#that doesn't mean all entertainment has to be a Pure Political Statement. some stuff is just dumb because dumb shit is fun.#but like it's not. detached from the world. and a lack of political intent doesn't mean it's utterly unchallenging.#ok for example. have you ever. enjoyed watching a cheesy 80s zombie movie and it is gory and stupid and great#but then there's a scene where maybe there's a really fucked-up implication about what we as an audience are meant to think#or a rape scene played for light laughs. or whatever your line is.#and they meant it to be fun. you watched it for fun. but you're not having fucking fun any more. there's a bad taste in your mouth.#contrast. sometimes i am reading a nonfiction article for work or something. it is miserable and grim it is about homelessness and dv#but the writer has put it together so well and made their point so clearly you're like YES! YES! THAT'S IT!!!!#and even beyond that like. i am a disabled multiple rape and abuse survivor. i have been through a non zero amount of The Shit.#and a lot of the stuff i find most entertaining and relaxing is stuff that acknowledges that as a Thing Which Happens#like I'm a nerd man. i like video essays about misogyny and fascism and reactionary homophobia.#i like films that make me cry bc they touch an emotional raw spot. i like tiktoks where people joke about their experiences of abuse#i like SFF stories about trauma and survival and sad robots#and yeah you know sometimes i want to watch a comedy panel show or a tiktok of bottles rolling down stairs#but effective entertainment is a conversation! comedy and chill vibes rest on like. deciding what to riff on#and who your anticipated audience is. and nah actually that's not apolitical and also#identifying common human experiences like death or trauma or marginalisation as inherently Political and therefore Unfun#misses the point that like. the question isn't what you acknowledge but how you acknowledge it.#as a rape survivor. for example. i don't necessarily want to open tiktok to a lecture on rape culture.#but i might well stick about for a standup routine about being a survivor of rape#and i will absolutely bounce from a vid where nobody mentions rape bc they think what they're talking about is fine when it's. rapey af.#anyway. this is a sidebar cause even if i agreed about entertainment v politics my main point would still stand#but i very much don't agree and i think you need to maybe look at how you approach entertainment media as neutral#but also i feel very strongly about this and not to harp on the like aS A sUrViVoR thing but#AS A SURVIVOR my fucking LIFE includes ''dark topics'' like suicide and rape. and i don't appreciate how often that's treated as#an unfair imposition to speak about or acknowledge. 'dark shit' is inescapably a major part of my life/self AND I'm funny + entertaining

Arw you really the author John Green? The same person who wrote The Fault in Our Stars and Looking for Alaska?
Yes, but I published one of those books 19 (?!?!?!) years ago and the other 12 (!?!?!?!?) years ago. What have I been up to since then?
My brother Hank and I started Good.store, which delivers high-quality socks, coffee, and soap to your home and donates 100% of its profit to charity. Through good store, we've raised over $7,500,000 to support efforts to radically reduce maternal mortality in Sierra Leone, where as recently as 2019, one in seventeen women could expect to die in pregnancy or childbirth.
(In fact, technically I am here on tumblr as an unpaid intern for the awesome coffee club, which you should really sign up for if you like ethically sourced coffee that tastes delicious and doesn't enrich billionaires.)
I wrote the novel Turtles All the Way Down and then had a little existential crisis and wrote a nonfiction book called The Anthropocene Reviewed, the latter of which is my first book for adults and my first attempt to write as myself.
I helped produce made a movie adaptation (streaming now on Max!) of Turtles all the Way Down.
I helped raise my kids and supported my spouse as she wrote her book You Are An Artist and created a PBS show about art called The Art Assignment.
I ran the educational media company Complexly and the merch company dftba.com while my brother had cancer.
I bought around 2% of a fourth-tier English football team called AFC Wimbledon. Wimbledon are different from most football clubs because they are owned by their fans, each of whom gets one vote in the club's leadership regardless of how much money they put into the club.
I became obsessed with tuberculosis, the world's deadliest infectious disease (it will kill over a million people this year despite being curable), and how TB both exemplifies and reinforces human-built structures of injustice, which is the subject of a book I'm writing that will come out next year.
#what i've been doing#since a lot of people are new here#which is a little terrifying#but we'll probably get through it#and if not i can always deactivate this account and start a new one#as one does#john green#coffee company

Watching the folks in AABB share information, co-write legislation, show up to library & school board meetings, & speak up to publishers about the need to protect diverse books & minority authors has been amazing!

Do you listen to podcasts? If so, do you prefer that they have a video component? Is it different for fiction vs. nonfiction shows?
I ask because all of the podcasting industry news is so heavily insisting audio-only shows pivot to include video.

Hello everyone I am so unbelievably pissed about the NaNoWriMo situation that i'm going to take my massive stack of writing and craft books and my English degree and channel all my rage into making an email newsletter to send craft-oriented writing prompts and tips during the month of November. Say No to NaNoWriMo, but yes to WriMo. You get it.
I'm not going to make this have the same goals as Nanowrimo-- I'm not reskinning it but less ableist, I just really think having a whole month where people focused on their work is pretty cool and I want to keep up that spirit. This is going to be informal and run by Just Me, though I'll make a discord server if it's clear there's interest. Direct questions to @nowrimomo , which I literally just made and so will look like a skeleton currently.
I'm going to include prompts from various professional sources with options for Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Fanfic, so everybody can get in on this. It doesn't matter what you write, but we should all Write More.
#nanowrimo#nowrimomo#this is really not a replacement for sitting down to churn out a novel in one month and if someone else runs an event like that i'll be#right there signing up#but if dracula daily made anything clear it's that substack is a good platform to share stuff like this#and I have big big personal beef with the way a lot of writing prompt generators work and/or source their prompts#from informal sources or with such specificity#that they aren't focused on craft at all#casper's haunted info tag

Hi, guys! Let's talk about fandom etiquette!
👨🏫👨🏫👨🏫
I know a lot of you are young and perhaps have not been part of fandom spaces since the dawn of time (circa fanfiction.net) so let's talk about some dos and don'ts with fandom, so we can keep this a happy place! Please read this and reblog to get this out to people who genuinely may not know!
📕DON'T: Write reviews of fics on Tumblr, Tiktok, or other social media. Fic writers are creating these things for FREE, and did not ask you to review. This often leads to negative discourse and can even cause fic writers to take down their fics. 📗DO: Leave kudos and ONLY POSITIVE comments. Talk about only positive things on social media. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all!
Edited to add: YES, EVEN CONSTRUCTIVE CRITISCISM. If the author didn't ask for it, don't give it. Some may appreciate it, but others won't. At the very least, ask permission first.
📕DON'T: Post fic ideas or headcanons on AO3. AO3 is for posting actual fanfiction or fanart and nothing else. (What I mean by this is, I've seen posts on ao3 like "Just posting an idea that someone should write, here it is!" and that's not what ao3 is for). Edited to add: You can also post original works and nonfiction works based on fandom on ao3! 📗DO: Post headcanons and ideas on Tumblr, Tiktok, etc!
Edited to change: Okay, so I feel like there's some arguments over like...what qualifies as metafic versus something that shouldn't be on AO3? So from my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong), people DEFINITELY should not be posting just a title with no work attached, which I have seen a lot lately, nor should they be posting to search for someone else's fic. However, it seems like lists, and similar metafic are okay, as well as original content, and nonfiction.
📕DON'T: Repost entire fanfictions without permission or sell bound fanfiction. Again, this causes writers to take their fics down, and can actually cause issues with fandom because it can cause allegations of copyright infringement. 📗DO: Recommend fics you like to others by talking them up and posting links! Ask permission before you translate!
📕DON'T: Send hate to authors for writing a fic in a way you don't like or not updating enough. Again, authors are doing this for free and sending hate causes serious mental harm to authors because they are people! If you don't like it, don't read it! 📗DO: Send love to authors in forms that they are comfortable with!
📕DON'T: Shame others for their ships/fics/kinks. Fandom is supposed to be a supportive space! Judging people is taking away that safe space! 📗DO: Use the block button! Block or filter out things or people you don't like!
📕DON'T: Use AI to create art or fics. This is detrimental to the creators who work hard to create their work! 📗DO: Try making your own art or fics! Practice makes perfect!
These are just a few of the things that I've seen happening more lately, but keep in mind that if you don't like something, you don't have to interact with it and fanart and fanfiction creators are people who are doing this for free. Please make sure to respect the hard work people put in, or fandom can't exist!
(Feel free to discuss/add things as long as you're being respectful!)
