As I waited for the sun to rise on this final day of autumn 2024, before the dawning of the winter solstice, I watched the sky. It seemed late. Of course it seemed late. Tomorrow will be the shortest day of the year. Ever so gradually, the sky brightened. First, there was barely a hint of light shining through the trees as if taking its time was a way to remind me to slow down. And then I began…

I've been seeing comments since the announcement for the Pale Garden drop that with the arrival of pale oak, an actual white wood, nobody will use birch wood anymore.

And, well. I was never using birch as a white wood in the first place? An actual white wood will be so handy for that, absolutely. But I was using birch as a pale yellow wood, and it still works beautifully for that? It goes so well in sandy palettes with things like sandstone and stripped oak, and it's got the same lovely contrast against spruce wood that sandstone does.

While it was the palest wood option, birch was never white. It has a lovely pale yellow tone, a nice bridge between the pale sandstone and darker yellows and browns like oak and spruce.

Granted, I just love sandstone and the sandy palettes that spring up around it, so I'm biased. My first survival world was a desert/savanna, as I've said before, so sandstone is kind of where I'm centered. But. Birch works quite well for it.

Also birch woods are very pretty, especially if they run down to a beach.

I'm very much looking forward to pale oak, don't get me wrong. But birch has it's own uses, and if you need something to pair with sandstone, it's still the king baby. Heh.

This was my very, VERY first time drawing the main girls from Pokémon Special!

I remember I was at my grandparents' house. I drew them from memory, which is why some details are a bit off!

I had just started reading the Diamond & Pearl Chapter and the only thing I knew about Platinum was that she was rich and very pretty, so... yeah. That's a pearl necklace she's wearing, lmao. I think I did fairly good at the other girls, though!
