11/7/24.
Dandy Boy Records continues it proliferant ways with it's announcement of the upcoming 7" from new San Francisco/Bay Area group Ryli. This is a collaboration between Rob Good (The Goods) and Yea-Ming Chen (Yea-Ming and the Rumours).
The two originally joined forces when they recorded a song for the Cleaners From Venus compilation released by Dandy Boy. The Dandy Boy page refers to Camera Obscura and "Spector-esque" sounds.
Dandy Boy is also releasing a cassette from Magic User another Bay Area band that the label describes as leaning into their influences of "Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., and Teenage Fanclub." I think the one song that's available sounds a bit like Sonny & the Sunsets.

Yea Ming and the Rumours 2024-01-05 DBR Showcase 924 Gilman St. Berkeley, CA Tracklist after soundchecks for the first few minutes... Oh Sweet Mother [4:05] New songs at [5:17] and [8:33] Thank you's to Dandy Boy and Bobby [11:23] More new songs at [11:42] and [15:00] My Baby Blue [18:40] Back To The Days Of I Don't Knows [22:08] A lot of these songs are unreleased/forthcoming and am looking forward to hearing them once they are out. I am mindful about the sharing unreleased songs without express permission, so let me know if this needs to be embargoed, and I can re-edit this with just the already released tracks, those being "My Baby Blue" from a 2017 single, and "Oh Sweet Mother" plus "Back To The Days..." from 2022's "So, Bird..." all of which are available here: https://yea-ming.bandcamp.com/album/s... Didn't know that Yea-Ming had acted in a few films! https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4826343/ The other videos I've upped this weekend from this showcase have opined substantially about the black-white-green-and-red-wedge flag in the background, so I'll spare you from any further pontificating on this topic.

Yea-Ming & the Rumours- I Can’t Have It All (Dandy Boy)
Tumblr media
By hearing the first couple of singles from this album, I knew this record was going to be ace, and it certainly is. This Bay Area band, led by Yea Ming Chen, put out a lovely album in 2022 called So, Bird; and this record has updated that sound perfectly.
The sound here is perfectly understated with hushed guitars, brushed (at times) drums, rolling bass, and Yea-Ming’s soft, yet emotive vocals. Chen wrote the album in her bedroom and then had it fleshed out by a superb cast of players;  Eoin Galvin on lead guitar/lap steel, Jen Weisberg on bass, and Luke Robbins on drums (Sonia Hayden played drums on a few tracks).
Opening cut, “Pretending,” happily strums away, while the title track shows depth and real emotion. They kick things up a notch or two on the slightly more rocking “Ruby.” And “I Tried To Hide” has a country vibe (think when Camera Obscura goes country). “Before I Make It Home” is another one of the magical highlights on here.
At times, the record is highly emotional with Chen doing a lot of self-reflection; so it’s got a lot more depth than a lot of pop records these days. It's one of my faves of the year so far.

we're back on wlur from 8pm until midnight for this week's show and if you can't listen live you can check out last week's show on mixcloud.
it's been quite a week! i flew down to florida early monday morning to take my mom to a rolling stones concert in orlando that night. seeing the stones is a bucket list item for her- she's been a fan for over sixty years but never had the chance! i picked up some floor seats on the secondary market last month and we had a total blast. we then crashed and mom dropped me off at the airport first thing on tuesday morning.
ps- that hoarseness last week was strep trying to ruin my trip! yay for antibiotics!

THE 1981 - 'Make It Right' Video
Their new single/video “Make it Right” just came out this past Friday, July 14th
The 1981 are an Oakland duo consisting of Adam Widener and Bobby Martinez. Their debut album Move On is a buzzy power pop record with layers of guitars, synths, organs and vocals over a melancholy ache.
Influenced by the Jesus and Mary Chain’s fuzzed guitars and sweet melodies, and Comet Gain’s jangle punk narratives, the band plays a pleasant and enjoyable brand of hook driven indie pop.
Move On carries a lyrical narrative of a relationship starting (“Easy”) and then ultimately falling apart (“Expiration Date”) and the aftermath (“Moving On”). “There’s a million songs written about relationships ending and most of them are from this ‘why-baby-why?’ point of view where the narrator is the victim or has been done wrong, and they’re lamenting about being jilted as this completely blameless party. I wanted to approach it from a different perspective.” Recalls Martinez, the principal lyricist on most of the album. “Relationships are difficult and complex. I wanted to explore both points of view and leave things a bit ambiguous in terms of just who the narrator was on any given song or in some cases, verse.”
Much like the legendary Buzzcocks were akin to do, the twelve song album largely avoids pronouns and sexual identity purposely. “I wanted this record to be something anyone who’s ever gone through a break up could hear and identify with. Regardless of gender or sexuality- everyone that’s ever been in a romantic relationship has experienced a relationship ending. This is universal.” The album follows a couple dealing with mental illness and exhaustion and falling into unhealthy patterns avoiding conflict ("Make It Right"), and the subsequent silent resentment and frustrations ("I Love You But I Hate You"). Ultimately the characters never get too nasty or bitter- even as the relationship is ending there's a maturity to the realization that loving a person isn't enough to make a relationship work ("Empty Eyes"). The 38 minute soap opera finally wraps up in a nice reflective way as the two narrators wish each other well and hold onto the good times as special moments in their growth ("Breathing Room").
Move On was recorded as it was written by Widener and Martinez in their rehearsal studio before recruiting Phil Lantz (Neutrals, Chime School) to re-record drums on several tracks and Yea-Ming Chen (Yea-Ming and the Rumours) to duet on “In Your Eyes”. The record was sent to the Southern Hemisphere for Matt Bullimore (ex-Legs, ex-Mantles) to mix in Christchurch, New Zealand and Mikey Young (Eddy Current) to master in Melbourne, Australia.
Their debut single “Easy (It’s Not)” was featured on Green Day’s “Oakland Coffee” Spotify playlist and found the 1981 receiving comparisons to contemporaries like Mike Krol, Crocodiles, and Terry Malts. Initially intended to only exist as a recording project before eventually evolving into a full live band, the 1981 have been playing around the Bay Area and sharing the stage with locals such as Luke Sweeny, Artsick (Slumberland), Aluminum (Dandy Boy), Telephone Numbers (Meritorio) and touring acts like Massage (Mt. St. Mtn.), Supercrush (Don Giovanni), DA Stern (Slumberland) and Pretty Flowers (Dirt Cult).
Influences: the Apples In Stereo, Comet Gain, Jesus and Mary Chain, the Primitives

Have Yourself a Dandy X-Mas (2021)
Have Yourself a Dandy X-Mas (2021)
Dandy Boy RecordsBuy: Bandcamp This excellent Dandy Boy Records compilation of Bay-Area bands has been on my radar longer than any other 2021 release… and while a long wait could lead to unrealistic expectations, I am quite happy to express the opposite. This is one of those rare occasions when a compilation is excellent all the way through. With five originals (some previously released as…

Dandy Boy Records Showcase, featuring Sob Stories, along with The 1981, Funeral Cake, The Goods, and Yea-Ming and the Rumours. Yeah, real bay shit, as scribbled on the back wall. Filmed with Shùfone XR and Shure MV88 mics. As I was having technical issues at the start, I borrowed spare footage of the start of "The Tourist" I had from their Kilowatt SF 11/24/23 show in order to at least provide enough of the track the viewer won't notice my inability to start this up on time, as I was struggling keeping the Shure plugged into the fruity tricorder.

Yea-Ming & The Rumours- I Can't Have It All (Dandy Boy Records)
More of that fantastic indie pop from, where else, that fertile Bay Area music scene. This one coming out on Dandy Boy Records who’ve released a bevy of good stuff the last couple of years,
This band is mainly the work of one Yea-Ming Chen and this song is the title track to the forthcoming album that will be out in late May. This cut is a nice and dreamy number, maybe akin to the prettier Yo La Tengo material and it’s a song you can’t help but fall in love with on the first listen.
The recording is crystal clear (thanks in part to Meric Long at Tiny Telephone Studios)  and Yea-Ming and the band sound absolutely spot on. Their forthcoming album is one my most heavily anticipated albums this year!

no love for ned hits the wlur airwaves at 8pm sharp tonight for a new show that includes several tracks acquired today during bandcamp friday.
we kicked off a new theme in last week's show (stream it on mixcloud). for the next several months we're going to start the show off with tracks that feature jim white of the dirty three on drums. he's been playing in bands for more than forty years and he's been featured on four new releases already this year which suggests the theme might take us all the way until september!
