I ordered a device like this. It is soviet drum machine Lel' PSR. Sounds like a Yamaha RX drums. Let's see what we can do with it.

Yamaha Digital Drummer EMR-1
Half rack sized preset rythem drum machiene, with a target audience of home keyboard players. this was part of a line of half rack keyboard expanders in this form factor. I think this unit is from 1988.

The 'magic' ic this box is built around is the Yamaha YM3419B, A PCM chip with drum samples and a built in dac. the other big chips are probably pattern memory, some ram, and a processor, but all the ICs have been rebadged with Yamaha internal part numbers, so I'm not sure which is which. As a result of this obscure and highly integrated design the unit is unsuitable for modification or circuit bending.
It sounds okay, in a kinda lofi way, but if, like me, you like lofi drums, this unit is probably not crunchy enough. Its definitely not realistic enough to compete with modern drum options, and lacks charector compared to both analog and older digital machines.
On the plus side, The patterns are okay, and it has full midi control and midi sync. Although limited, the unit is easy to use and integrate into a larger setup.
I paid $30 with shipping for this one, and IMO that's the high end of what its worth. For $10-20 I think this could be a good writing or practice tool, essentially a fancy metronome, and maybe an electronic or experimental musician could get something recordable out of it (probably by running it through, or controlling it with, a much bigger setup)
here's a video off youtube with one of these machines;
