chapter 1 (in progress)
A/N: Story's been slowly being written and put together. Haven't connected with my fellow betas and/or co-writers yet (there's always room for a few more). Might as well post some work in progress to get me motivated to write more.
For those who still don't know the premise of this story, this project is an AU of Guilty Crown, with a slightly different world. Some of the characters will remain the same, others expanded, and some completely different from the original.
This is only the first portion, and the first draft, of the chapter, so there is going to be much, much more. Once the actual chapter comes out, I'll post it on AO3, too.
Any moment now, and his feet would fall asleep from standing up for so long. Nothing extraordinary to warrant a whole squadron of actual agents out here to the wharf. And here, Jeremy didn't think that getting deployed to Japan would be so boring. Did he mentioned he had to move positions not once, but twice?
He shifted in footing to his less tired leg. Whatever this shipment contained, it better be worth changing locations and waiting day and night out here next to the ocean. Not only did he hate standing, but he hated ocean weather. The shores of Yokohama differed from his hometown back in Texas.
Another minute crawled by when Jeremy decided on lying down on the stray crate that the last shipment had neglected. His rest didn't last long when he spotted another agent coming his way. Jeremy's back went ramrod straight when the man was five feet away.
"Just got word from the captain," the newcomer (his name escaped him) said in between breaths. "The car's around the corner. Should be here any minute."
Oh, it better be around the corner, Jeremy groaned inwardly.
"Oh, thank God," He voiced his sentiment. "You don't know how long I've been here!"
"No kidding," the other guard's shoulders relaxed and let his gun dangle from its straps. "You stuck here for another hour, too?"
"Yeah," Jeremy shrugged, sitting back down on the crate. "I don't even get why I signed up for this. I thought it was good money."
"You, too?" The second shrugged. "Well, whatever brings food to the table, right?"
"I guess," Jeremy pondered. "Still boring as fuck, though."
The two of them fell into silence as the awaited their shipment.
"What's your name?"
The guard looked at him incredulously. "Uh… Don't you remember me?"
"Not really, no."
"It's Jiro," The guy snuck in a pout. Touchy. "It's short, so at least remember that."
"Jiro, eh?" The foreign ones were always interesting. "From the States or here?"
"Here."
"That's good," Jeremy nodded. "Say, wanna go for a drink when we're done? Just a couple shots at the Geronimo."
"Gee," Jiro returned an uneasy smile. "I don't know what the wife has to say about that…"
The kid's married, huh? But he didn't look a day past twenty.
"Come on!" Jeremy tried to goad him. "Tell her it's a guys' night out? She'll understand!"
Jiro ignored him, and pointed out the smallest hint of blinking headlights in the distance.
"It's them."
Way to change the subject, Jeremy grumbled to himself as he got up from his seat. The incoming vehicle was heavily armored, nothing like the eighteen-wheelers that usually stopped by. Those higher ups must have been in a real hurry if they didn't consider discreetly transporting this thing.
The drivers that emerged from them were just as well armed as their truck, enough to make Jeremy feel underdressed for the occasion. From the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of Jiro fidgeting with the notches of his gun.
"Warrant Officers Jeremy Lee and Jiro Nagamine?" One of them asked, guns still raised in defense. Jeremy spotted the mark of a Major on one of them.
"Sir, yes sir!"
"Get the back," the higher ranked of the two drivers directed them to the truck. "We're on a clock."
Says you, Jeremy wanted to reply, but thought better of risking his rank. He and Jiro trotted to the big doors which had been bolted many times. Jiro whistled in astonishment, and Jeremy couldn't have said it better himself. This was going to take a while.
He reached for his section of the key when a soft hum whizzed right by his ear, followed by a startled scream. Jiro's scream.
"Arggghhhhhhhhhh!!"
"Jiro?" Jeremy whipped around to check on the guy, but get a face full of good quality rubber in return. His entire body slapped the ground painfully, eyes dizzy from the throbbing agony from the side of his head. He must be bleeding.
He shifted on his side to peek. Getting back up now would be pointless, especially if they had the skill to sneak up on him.
What he witnessed not expected. Their attacker, shrouded in the darkness, was clever enough to dress in black, an unnoticeable color in the night, compared to the pure white of GHQ's armored vests. They were covered up from head to toe, their back turned to him. He couldn't identify them, but their legs seemed too shapely for a man. A woman, then?
With the half of a second he had left, Jeremy looked to his left and found Jiro, or whatever remained of him. The poor man was in pieces, sunken in a small pond of red. The horrified shriek that had escaped him earlier was still preserved on his face, which had landed a few inches away from its base. Cold, once living eyes stared straight back at him, a useless plea.
Jeremy didn't have time to scream for his own life when a shuffle of feet coming from the front of the truck grew louder and halted. Jeremy covered his mouth with his hands. There was hope, and he believed in it! If he held out a little longer, he wouldn't be noticed. One driver was a Major! He'd beat this stranger fair and square!
"What the-"
"You! State your name and pur-"
And there went his throat. The officer that accompanied the Major gurgled on his own blood and slumped to the ground. In a burst of rage, the Major swooped in and aimed a bullet that set the stranger back a few inches back. But that didn't stop his head from rolling.
The stranger took extra care to step back to avoid getting her shoes wet.
Jeremy bit down hard on his hand, anything to stop himself from making a sound. He couldn't see in the awful dim of the sodium lamps, but the girl had something in her hands. Something metal. Something sharp.
He watched her leave the pile of bodies for the untouched. She held up her weapon high in the air, and he saw it in full. A sword, he thought. One that must have been ripped straight out of a science fiction movie he went to a year ago. The design was unlike anything he's ever seen. But a sword? An outdated piece of work. How did that pierce the armor of a GHQ agent?
The girl let the sword fall, and with a few choice swings of her blade, the thick bolts gave way and fell apart at her feet. The doors flew open for her, and she climbed into the small lit chamber. Jeremy squinted his eyes to find out what she aimed to steal from there. The lights were too bright to see past, and he was far too low on the ground.
He planned on propping himself up on the elbows to get a clearer angle when the stranger came out of the van. An aluminum briefcase had been tucked neatly under one of her arms, And the sword she wielded disappeared. He didn't see one strapped to her back.
"Aquila," he finally heard her speak. A little hard to distinguish over the waves crashing into the pier, but she was definitely a girl. Jeremy knew of her kind. A voice like that suited those sweet, cherry-faced girls next door. If she wasn't a murderer.
"Yes," she continued talking to someone over a communications link. Aquila, was it? "Yes, something like that. My arm is not okay."
Jeremy found himself in no position to flee. She was standing right outside the van, and her boots were within breathing distance to him. His lungs wanted to give out, and he was no record holder.
"Don't."
The sharp command wasn't meant for him, but he felt his fingers twitch. She didn't stare straight down at him to notice. If she'd leave sooner, his life would be spared. His lungs protested, however.
"I might have made a bit of a mess here. Might need to lay low for a while."
Jeremy's face must have turned blue now, but no stopping here. Not now. The higher ups needed an explanation from him, so he had to decide. Live or die? He chose to live, but with risks. Maybe a little air, very softly…
"All right, but how-"
The risk wasn't worth it. She didn't even look to check. That long pause spelled acknowledgement. And demise.
"I'll call you back when things quiet down. Nike, Out"
His heart rolled to his stomach as he watched the girl lift her free hand above her head, just like when she cut apart the truck's behind.
Lustrous, silver threads manifested at the base of her extended palm, and her hand was lost to a cascade of crystals that stretched far above Jeremy's head. The threads, now ribbons, sliced at the raw mass and there appeared the sword. Its blade glinted in the sodium light and offered no signs of dulling age. When the stranger stared down to meet him, he could see her eyes: a pair of cold, frosted roses.
Jeremy was paralyzed by the awe and fear that kept sprinting for miles in his space of thought. When Jeremy came to Japan, he wanted to find beauty, the exotic aura, the promise of a sight unattainable in the confines of a suburb in Dallas. But not like this.
The blade came down, and Warrant Officer Jeremy Lee it claimed.

"You know what sucks? Shipping a ship that hasn't even left the dock. It kills, tears me up inside! That is exactly what the unrecognized ship of Ayase and Yahiro do to me! I ship them really, really hard and there is absolutely no evidence of anyone else doing so. No fanart, no fanfiction, nadda. Is there anyone-ANYONE- out there that has at least given thought to the awesomeness of this pairing cause' currently, I'm only comforted by the fantasies I conjure. :( " -Editor Yukari

The Void Genome
Earth had reached a new age of technology, and it was inevitable that everyone would find a new leap of progress in the ever growing field of biological engineering. Scientific pursuits shifted to biological weapons, culminating in the concept of the Void, a wondrous little invention born from the minds of nanotechnology scientists from all over the planet.
The Void was originally made as a medical application to humans, such as replacements for human parts so amputees who suffered disabilities could now regain their limbs in almost perfect condition with less dire consequences. With the Void opening many windows of opportunity, some turned to applying the Void to regenerate wounded soldiers on the field. This proved to be widely successful, and the Void was used by many countries worldwide, and provided the basis for more nanotechnology in medical fields and combat. But with this development came a new arms race for the best biological weapons and utilities.
And as many had feared, war did break out.
Japan largely remained uninvolved with the war, which mostly was fought over the in the Atlantic. They did however, assist their Western allies by fulfilling the ultimate dream of fusing biology and nanotechnology: the new generation of superhuman. Enhanced humans were already at large, but many believed there could be more to the Void and applying them to humans. Japanese scientists worked long and hard, and were most unsuccessful, save for a pair of miracles.
The first and only successful subjects were the children of Kurosu Ouma, a head scientist of GHQ. The two children came to be out of sheer luck. The children were given no names, but their powers were unimaginably impressive. Because they possessed the Void Genome, a combination of human genetics and the Void, the children were able to manifest Void by deconstructing their bodies into weapons. They were also able to deconstruct the bodies of surrounding humans by physical contact. This was quite a miracle indeed.
Any attempts to try the process again ended in failure, but GHQ learned that they could clone the children to make more of the same weapon. Horrified after discovering what his children would be used for, Kurosu tried to run away from GHQ with his children in tow, but he managed to take his youngest, which he named Shu, into hiding with his second ex-wife Haruka. After leaving his child in good hands, he tried to return to GHQ to retrieve his daughter Mana, but was killed in the process.
GHQ followed through with cloning Shu and Mana Ouma, which resulted into subjects such as Inori Yuzuriha and Daryl Yan. But the attempt to recreate the Void Genome for easier consumption for the military masses did not go away. The Void Genome was then successfully made into a drug like substance that could be injected but effects were temporary and still damaged subjects psychologically. A few more years brought about a more permanent Void Genome injection, but only a few strains of the permanent Void Genome existed.
Funeral Parlor aimed to retrieve these Void Genome injections and destroy them so they could never be made again. However, this mission went awry and the Void Genome came into the hands of Yahiro Samukawa, who was in the company of Shu Ouma, one of the Children of the Future. Yahiro would take this injection out of desperation, and this would give him a power similar to Shu Ouma, except he was initially limited to certain objects.
