So that new Levi card, woah boy(positive). I get how setting is slightly dubious but unfortunately my brain stopped at the ‘childish jealousy’ part and yeah childish was the perfect word he actually is throwing a bratty tantrum about MC talking about their time with Minhyeok WHILE THEY'RE NOT EVEN NEXT TO HIM. Levi, babey, you're not beating the Tsundere allegations.

Also the part about the sins was very interesting ‘cause it kinda puts in perspective why he feels like there's no King he's close to. Or at least that's my read on that part, all their sins have some positive parts while his is the only fully negative one so of course he couldn't feel close to them. (Personally I do think that part is his viewpoint on their sins and it would be interesting to see the other Kings’ too, Satan in particular since I feel like his sin and depressive mood swings do go hand in hand)

Now for the read more aka wiiiild speculations because he didn't come home in the reduced ten pull aka see you in 3 months bae when I have 500 pulls and you still refuse to show up(looking at you bath Satan), fair bit of character analysis and slight canon divergence(???) plus personal MC involvement.

GONNA PREFACE THIS BY WAVING NY ‘LEVI SIMP’ FLAG UP HIGH, IF THE CARD STORY WAS OFF PUTTING TO YOU OR YOU DISLIKE HIS CHARACTER IN GENERAL THEN MORE POWER TO YOU BUT PLEASE DO NOT INTERACT WITH THIS POST! IT AIN'T MEANT FOR YOU HOMIE (it's meant for me first and then anyone else who wants to witness my 3am insanity)

Aight? Aight! Here we go gamers

Gonna start this off by saying that when they dropped the first teaser for the card my expectations for the story were jelly Levi wants to replace minhyeok and thus enters MC's memories except surprise surprise it was actually some corn set in a high school (don't pretend those aren't a thing, we're all adults here, and with MC’s track record in that game it would not be surprising) in part because the story had to get spicy at some point.

Personal belief is that what we see in the prologue of Levi is the closest thing to a ‘normal’ him aka a version of him that got to experience a normal childhood and not have all the trauma of… ya know… HIS WHOLE PAST. The way he expected an attack when MC initially trips breaks me in a very particular way, he has never known peace, he expects everything to be some sort of attempt on his or his people’s life. The one time he wasn't as uptight ended up with him heavily injured (Bloodshed card).

There is also him ascertaining that they had different starting points. Now this could refer to a lot of things but to me one thing that does is put a definite line between them. To me it sounds like he's reasoning with himself that because of their very different lives they would be incompatible (combined with that thing about his sin being the only negative one it shows he always separates himself from people he would otherwise form bonds with)

Now he's still not nice, far from it, but he can be accommodating and look out for MC when he is not thinking 24/7 about possibly being attacked. Whether he reasons that it would endear himself more to them or out of pure instinct he looked out for MC, those were not Minhyeok’s actions he mimicked but his own.

So yeah, average Levi is horrendously bad at emotions and frankly probably the one who understands his own emotions towards a potential romantic partner(since tbh that is what MC is) the least. (This is a whole other can of brainworms about how aside from Solomon he probably has not been attached to anyone in that way until MC based on something he says in his H-Scene, but that can of worms shall be opened later) please get some therapists in Hell, clearly everyone would benefit from it.

There is also something impossibly endearing to me about seeing Levi in a high school setting even for a bit because that's not something he ever experienced and I wish his time exploring that part of MC and Minhyeok's past was a bit longer. I want to believe MC gets to ask him later in the story how he felt about it.

If you were only here for the character analysis then thanks for reading, have a lovely day/night/evening, we are going into wild speculation territory and some personal things regarding my MC Jin in that particular scenario.

tl;dr: After Jin's parents were killed she pretty much secluded herself in their home doing most of her studying through online courses and only showing up physically at school for a couple of days.

I choose to believe she was aware of stuff from the start but in that way you're aware you're in a dream while you sleep, she can tell things are a bit off but not fully what is wrong. She knows the person with her is not Minhyeok, she also knows who Leviathan is, but there's a certain disconnect when trying to piece it all together, but the further the dream goes the more she ‘realises’ and ‘awakens to the truth' if you will.

She cannot help but pity Levi’s situation even if she knows if she ever said that she'd probably get insta-hanged, so a part of her cannot help but wonder if he wanted to experience some normalcy for once. (She's not the brightest tool in the shed so the fact that he wants to replace Minhyeok would not pass by her singular braincell) (I love her I swear, being mean is my love language)

So I imagine after the whole dream thing is over and she next visits Hades she doesn't raise any questions about that event. She seems annoyingly unbothered and not curious at all. If anything this just makes Leviathan more angry because she can't be that unbothered after everything and pretend nothing happened, he should've been the only thing on her mind and yet she still sometimes mentions that detestable human. Oh how he should hang her for it. And then one day she has a conspicuously familiar candy in her mouth. “Was the experience at least a bit pleasant?” She's soft spoken anyway but she sounds almost apologetic. Why yes the experience was quite pleasant if Levi had to be honest but he'd never praise her openly… and then it hits him. She's not asking about that, she's asking about how he felt in a normal human high school.

When she gets no answer she stammers and starts speaking again, trying to fill the void. “I didn't exactly… go there often…” The pauses are plentiful and her shoulders droop almost in shame. “... so I imagine whatever you saw was rather lacklustre… aside from… my pathetic display-”

“It wasn't bad.”

A short sentence and it was enough to make the human girl perk up instantly. From anyone else that would be considered nigh an insult, but with Levi's temperament that was the highest praise she could hope for. By the time Jin was next to his desk after he'd beckoned her with a wave of his hand her visage had brightened significantly. ‘Stealing’ the lollipop from between her lips was ‘child’s play’ after that, the girl clearly took stunned to speak and becoming redder by the second.

“Yes, not bad at all.”

I've stated it in a prev set I think, but if you put this man in water his wings will sometimes involuntarily flap like he's in a birdbath. It's somewhat of a stim, bird brain just goes "you gotta."

I've also stated before that when he's stressed, his wings will flap kinda like the way someone might nervously shake out their hands.

Another restate, sometimes his laughs and startled yelps sound almost like squawks. Also his hiccups. It's very rare, but whenever it happens, he gets teased for it. Especially by Etoiles.

Another restate, sometimes his echolalia is his bird brain mimicking a sound he heard if it scratches an itch.

We've all seen the way he perches above everyone. It's probably his most prominent/noticeable avian trait.

Apparently camomile calms birds down. If this fool liked hot drinks, he'd have another way to settle his anxiety.

His obsession with noodles got him accused by Tubbo of enjoying them bc bird brain likes worms. He was NOT pleased. Almost gagged.

As long as you're careful around his wings, he LOVES back rubs. (It's bc the dumbass mf slept in that damn chair too much so now his back riots)

DO NOT THE WINGS. Petting them is one thing, he loves when Lullah hugs them, he thinks it's cute. But omg do not dig your fingers into his feathers. They're very sensitive. And that could mean tickling OR pain.

However if you gently do it, his wings will spread a little and his feathers poof up, which is kinda funny. It's like how if you touch a cat's foot the right way, their toes will spread out to present The Beans(tm). Blessed.

He likes to gift his shedded feathers to people he trusts. Chayanne, Lullah & Missa each have one. Although he's extremely close with Etoiles and Fit, he feels too awkward to give one to them yet. Feels a little too intimate.

Gift giving in general is a HUGE part of his love language though. Crow brain must give shiny things to people he loves yesyes.

Bird zoomies!! Wings poof up, he starts hopping all over the place like a big dork. He'd fly all over too, if he could.

Bobs his head to music. Those videos of pet birds dancing? That's Phil babey!!

Another one of his fave bits is pretending to understand and have a full-on conversation with birds. Loves pretending to gossip with them right in front of the person he & the bird(s) are "gossiping" about. However the crows he DOES understand & gossip with.

When he can fly, he's an expert at dive-bombing targets like a bird of prey. It's TERRIFYING. And very attractive depending on who you are (*cough* Missa *cough*)

Lullah once tried to test if throwing a blanket over his head would make him fall asleep like how if you put a blanket over a bird's cage they'll think it's night time and go to bed. It didn't work. He was very confused.

Birds whenever they're happy to see you will stretch their wings out like "Hello yes!" Phil do happy wing stretches when he see the kids :D

His hearing and eyesight are fucking amazing. The only reason he's able to be snuck up on is bc he hyperfocuses on things or the things that sneak up on him are super fast.

Rare Isa Fluffy Headcanon: He make blanket nests.

When stressed or overwhelmed, he'll wrap his wings around himself or raise them to shield his head. He doesn't do this so much after his wings were clipped & injured. They hurt too much.

100% will spread his wings all the way out (when they aren't hurting a lot) to look more threatening towards enemies. They almost autopilot do it when he's angry, but if they hurt too much they'll stop. He's pissed they don't look as threatening after The Federation clipped his wings

Can I please have some dark world administrative lore. Read your "Jaden Yuki has to take care of a pack of middle schoolers" and now im obsessed. Very much looking forward to the fic you mentioned where Yuri becomes Jaden's intern/apprentice because I would love to see their relationship development/dynamic and also. I need more administrative lore. I would absolutely read your entire 15 slide powerpoint

I have such a regular amount of Dark World lore. It is a very sane amount of worldbuilding I did. The next fic in the series definitely isn't going to be more underworld office comedy schennanigans with absurd amounts of exposition and complex workplace drama.

(One of these is a lie.)

For the dark world administrative lore, I decided to use file no. 4 of the Master Guide 2 card storylines as a jumping off point, and then the lore just ballooned from there. The powerpoint exists for my own referencing purposes, because even if most of the dark world generals don't appear (yet >:), it is important it exists to me.

Let's start with our head of state and his primary advisors!

Third King of the Dark World, babey!!! You know him, you love him, it's the Yuki!

Not too much to say about our Supreme Boi that isn't gonna be covered in future fics. The most relevant information, going into the as-of-yet-untitled next gc au fic, is thinking about what the hot mess that is dark world politics from an outside perspective. Like, imagine you're one of the other interdimensional courts that exist in the wider yugioh canon and just

I can say that in the gc au after he settles into the dark world and starts being involved in running the kingdom, Jaden goes in and officially names him an official of the dark world. At first, Yuri demanded he also be called "Supreme King", because he's a little shit like that. They compromise on "Supreme Prince".

None of the other officials call him that. They just call him "The Princeling"

Jaden does, in fact, end up giving him a scarf at some point.

Under our King, Prince, and Vanguard, we have the newly promoted heads of Millitary and Wellfare. There is technically a third branch of of the government, Security, but rather than have a single representative, the duties of security are actually divided into Internal and External. Or, more specifically, The Wild Hunt and Renge And His Weird Daughter.

More on them later.

Fun fact! At first one might assume that the dark world monsters don't have genders! Well, I assumed that at first, at least. But Snoww is considered notable for being the "only" female Dark Lord, which implies they have at least some kind of gender system. And for some reason, I find it much stranger to have a host of duel spirits with like twelve guys and one woman, than everyone just using to same pronouns. So for my own comfort and amusement, I've switched up some of the Dark Lords genders. So if she ever comes up in fic, Lucent is a woman. Other than that, she's basically the textbook brooding samurai. Jaden actually offered her the position of millitary head first, but she turned it down, both thinking herself undeserving of the title, and because she argued her being not an on-the-ground operative is exactly how she did not know how bad Bronn's rule had become. He reluctantly agreed, and she pointed him towards Zure.

What happened to the previous heads of Military? Well, as I alluded to in my fic, they're a bit hard to track down at the moment.

And in special ops, we got Cobal!

Not actually ever printed, never even seen in show. Cobal wasn't even a Dark Lord under the previous monarchy. He's like the dark world equivalent of a construction worker who got promoted to the head of the CIA. Why the rapid career change? Well one, he was in the resistance with Axel, and Jaden trusts anyone who tried to actively overthrow him. Also, the previous head of the CIA defected and set about overthrowing the government.

And on the other side, under Gren's oversight, we have our Silly Old Men.

The true victors of diplomacy. Because they were not soldiers, and smart enough to understand how veeeeery precarious that made their standing once Bronn started to go all mad king-y, used their massive brains and promptly noped right out of the situation. Parl already stayed in his cave like 90% of the time, so he pulled the old Just Stop Showing Up To The Office strategy and wrote a letter to his friend suggesting he do that same. Someone who was NOT passive about the whole Supreme King situation, however, was Ceruli's apprentice, Snoww.

While they have since reconciled, Snoww was originally an ardent opponent to Jaden's (first) rule, as well as Bronn. There isn't a more skilled death diviner in the dark world, nor any other dimension, so Supreme King Jaden went to her first thing upon Bronn's defeat to seek help recovering Jesse's soul. She was unable to find it (him being still alive) and even worse, advised Jaden that obsessing over a ghost was often the last thing a spirit wanted. Once he started pursuing Super Poly, she turned her work to guiding as many of the lost souls as she could to a peaceful rest, and delaying the ritual as long as possible.

She continued like this even after she was found out, and formally defected to join the rebellion.

RIP Latinum. He's currently rotting in one of the many Dark World prison cells.

And lastly, we've got the security branch, both internal and external.

There are now two gatekeepers in the Dark World, which is a 200% increase to what it was previously!!!

Broww's wild hunt is roughly based on the real life folkloric trend; the ever-moving host of unquiet dead that roams across the land. I like to think it has that same spooky connotation, even among dark world residents. Broww's just scary. Add to it that he basically disappeared from the government to continue to act as an independent force, the wild hunt has a bit of a mysterious reputation. It's basically the most sovereign branch of the dark world government, if not for...

Are you going to be the one to tell the dragonlord what they can and can't do??? Grapha and Jaden work on a mutual respect type of relationship, as Jaden is one of the most powerful beings in all dimensions and still a little cautious about working with dragon spirits. Inversely, Grapha is willing to handle territorial and testy dragons all day, but can acknowledge when their boss is pretty chill for an eldritch horror.

Horrortale!Sans (Skull) x Reader Misc SFW Headcanons

My favorite thing is when people portray sans in any light as either Just A Little Guy or as Fuckin Huge and Skull is a Big Boy <333 he's easily 7 feet tall, and Built Fucking Different.

Monsters can't like, completely and utterly alter the type of monster they are, so you won't see a Bunny Monster turn into a Moldsmal but its very widely understood that magic reflects the soul reflects the mind reflects the body - so its not really something where monsters experience dysphoria as much? Like if a monster is afab, but realizes they're trans and a guy, it may take awhile to transition - and they may need some help via magic other than their own - but it's really normal in comparison.

Unfortunately, the positive aspects of the whole "mind/soul/body" equation in that you'll eventually look how you want so long as you put the effort into changing every day can also be blocked by trauma and "scarring" to the soul. It's pretty rare in the canon universe, but for Horrortale monsters its damn near exclusive - when you have to do anything you can to survive, adaptation to your environment makes you a hell of a lot scarier in compenstation.

Skull is one such monster where if it weren't for his injury, he'd be a complete 180 from the typical monsters you see. But because of it, it makes it harder to control his magic because he can't think straight. It takes him longer to form sentences, takes him longer to process words sometimes, or even read. He gets light sensitivity really bad, and because his body change wasn't by his choice, but by an unfortunate way of being injured while in a traumatic situation, Skull, no matter how much better he gets, will never fully go back to what he was before.

He's extremely self-conscious about his size and his looks, not to mention his mental capacity. He knows and can think about what he's doing, his mind has never lost that sharpness or intellect. He can strip a machine down to parts and put it back together or put it to other use in minutes, but if you ask him to write it down or explain it he's going to have one hell of a time and he'll probably leave the experience worse than he went into it.

Similarly, if he does want to talk, in one of his rare moods where he's explaining what he's doing out loud to you, he could go on for hours, but suddenly hit a block where the words don't work right.

Be patient with him when this happens. He doesn't like it, and even though it can be frustrating at times, like if you're trying to decide something for dinner or write up a grocery list, he really is doing his best.

Sign language is a good alternative when the words don't want to come out but he's still able to communicate - writing can be one sided, but sometimes thats all he can do too.

When an idea strikes the both of you one day to just draw what he's thinking, Skull could fucking kiss you senseless when you hand him a white board and a dry erase marker. Words may not be making sense in his brain but he can picture what he wants in those moments so this is the perfect compromise between the two for communication.

Skull is his name now, so even though he was once Sans, Skull is what he picked as the reclamation of all that's happened to him. A name that he picked to get him through it day by day but its also a reminder of where he's been and where he'll go. That said... it's also a name he initially picked as a form of self harm to some degree, a mocking reference to his own injury that hindered him.

So while he'll probably never change his name again... he appreciates it when you call him pet names. It's a reminder that you love him enough to do so, while also giving himself a break from the constant reminder. He particularly loves when you call him your "Big old teddy bear" because... god he does not feel like it sometimes.

Get it its a reference to some of the fandom calling him Bear and I love that name for him a lot too

Due to the past, he has some Big Issues With Food, constantly bouncing back and forth between feast and famine.

He has some issues with meat at times - on bad days certain textures and tastes just remind him of the bad times in his life where survival was such a tightrope walk that just imagining eating it makes him sick.

A very "safe food" house, where the two of you stock up on your safe foods and have a cupboard dedicated to it for days you can't stand anything else.

Some days, Skull is content for the two of you to eat at the kitchen table or to watch TV in the living room while you two eat from separate bowls/plates, and he can eat fairly freely, not particularly caring who eats how much or in what order.

Others... other days he anxiously watches to make sure you've had a serving before he gets his, or, more likely, he brings the full pan/a single platter to the table, and the two of you share the same food, taking bites in turn so he can make sure you're getting enough to eat.

King of cooking. It makes him feel better to have full say of what goes into the meals, and honestly the man is an excellent cook. If you insist on helping him cook, it's a 50/50 on whether he gives you this smug little smile and sets you up on the counter top so he can look at you while he cooks, or if he actually lets you help.

He feels out of control if he can't cook, so even on special occasions he's still going to be cooking himself, unless you feel the Urge To Cook or you two order out.

Even then, please just go over with him what you did step by step and tell him what fully went in it - he trusts you implicitly and he's unlikely to outright ask... but it always helps ease his mind when you walk him through what you did just so he can feel less guilty.

Cuddler.

Big fucking cuddler.

Sitting on the couch alone? Not for long. Skull appears? Bam. you're in his lap, his claws smoothing across your skin and through your hair, purring up a storm as he settles his chin on the top of your head and closes his eyes.

If you're watching TV, he's only ever going to pay half attention if he's got you in his lap, half-snoozing in a very light doze as he basks in your presence, and half listening for danger/to the TV depending on the day.

He ADORES when you read to him. He loves it when you talk, and when he gets to listen to storytime while you talk? Best. Day. Ever.

Loves how small you are in comparison to him - something he never thought he'd be comfortable with at first, just based on the idea alone, but in practice he loves being completely wrapped around you and making sure you're safe. You're his personal teddy bear, no matter how many times you call him that yourself.

Jetpacking/Him being the little spoon is... unlikely. He's got some damn broad shoulders and chest, and he's not super happy with the idea of your limbs inside of him no matter if its on purpose or not.

If you want to hold him, he's definitely okay with that (although he does prefer to hold you) as long as you're touching him. You'll just have to let him set his head in your lap, or rest against your chest as he snuggles you chest to... well not chest, so more chest-to-skull and chest-to-legs with how he holds you. He's very beefy and has presence but he's about half the weight most people expect, despite the fact that it should be obvious because he's a skeleton.

He lets out the most broken whimper-whine-purr when you gently kiss the cracks on his skull, close to the gaping wound there. Don't actually touch inside or press too close to the wound itself, because that's genuinely very uncomfortable in the way it would be if he were human and had a missing eye and you touched the inside of the socket to see what it felt like. Just overall a bad experience so Don't Do That No Matter What The Intrusive Thoughts Say, although he'd let you do it in a heartbeat if you asked him

Absolutely whipped. Skull will do anything and everything you say if you just look at him just like that - just like he's your everything, like you love him without bounds and without exception. Puppy eyes also work.

He's a goddamn simp is what he is,

You'll just be minding your own business and you'll look over and catch him staring at you like you've hung the moon and the stars just to provide him with a small amount of your light during the nighttime. He looks at you with such adoration that it hurts.

Sometimes it looks a little freaky like, before you've come to automatically understand his expressions but goddamnit its so hard not to fall in love with him even just by a little more when he loves you so fucking much.

Kissies? Kissies for Skull? Please?

Once he's more comfortable giving affection unprompted you can barely keep his fucking hands off of you. He goes from "I Can And Will Nuzzle You And Pull You Into My Lap But That's It" to "No Kissies? No Snuggles? No Love For Skull? Oh! Jail! Jail For Datemate! Jail For Datemate For One Thousand Years!"

He straight up just hangs off of your clothing while staring at you until you give him a kiss or a hug. He'll come up to you and just bury his face into your neck while purring, or nuzzle your hair, but then moments later pout at you while wrapping his arms around your middle and burying his face into your stomach until you give up whatever youre doing and pay attention to him.

He doesn't do it often But By God Does He Get His Way When He Does.

He's also the type to just like, spend the entire day giving you small pecks on the lips and cheeks and forehead, and then snuggle you at night, and then the next day he'll be way less clingy. You take it in stride and then he just out of the blue dips you in the fucking moonlight and kisses you senseless.

The bastard.

Circling back to pet names, he thinks the nickname Teddybear/Bear is cute and he likes it, but call him My Love/Love/Dear Heart/something else dripping with affection and he's cupping your face in his hands and staring at you adoringly while he rubs your cheek with his claw.

Surprise him with new ones and he'll turn positively blue in the face while smiling like a fool

Surprise him with silly ones and he'll be even more in love while laughing. call him your little chicken nugget and he cant stop smiling and chuckling for a few hours. God. He'll dream of kissing you under the moonlight if you make a pun out of it.

(Brief aside here so I can avoid the text character limit "per block" but I prefer doing bullet point lists for these so anyway continue on)

Pet names always depend on the person, so whatever his one for you depends on you as a person (thats the easy way out for me) but he prefers just one pet name. (Aside from like. Babe being thrown in sometimes yknow)

He'll start with one pet name and see how you react to it - he prefers cute ones like Kitten, Bunny, Lovebird, etc. Something small and cute and adorable - though he changes it up depending on what you respond best to, because while the majority of the reason he calls you a pet name is out of affection, he still calls you pet names to see you get flustered.

On days he's feeling better, he gets more sassy he's gonna include more puns. Or teasing. Example - if he calls you lovebird, or some sort of bird-based nickname? Fuckin. He's calling you pigeon to see how you react.

Bunny? Hare-brain

Kitten? Fuzzball

If its an animal/bird/etc that he calls you in terms of nicknames, he might even refer to you as the scientific name of the animal, or a breed in that category because he thinks its funny to watch you fully stop in your tracks and process what he's just said.

Picks you up at any given opportunity.

Often people say, "he would not fucking say that" or "this makes me back button out of a fic" but my question for you as someone who has read everything on Al Gore's green AO3 is, what's something you read in a fanfic that makes you start hooting and hollering for joy? Like what in a fic will activate you immediately and make you go HELL yeah babey let's GO!!! and then you experience an unmatched earthly delight?

as everyone knows, i'll read in basically any fandom indiscriminately--definitely any rpf fandom, but i can't even tell you how much voltron fic i've read without having any real understanding of the canon. mama HAS to read a little romance before she falls asleep, and i am NOT picky about who's doing the romancing.

the thing that will make me absolutely apeshit in any fic of any scenario is a misunderstanding that is just absolutely nailed. like, misunderstandings are my fucking KRYPTONITE and they're so so so hard to do well because the temptation is often to write someone bullheaded, you know. someone who is being given clues and is determinedly ignoring them past the point of believably. i think when people say they hate misunderstandings in fic, they're often talking about that kind of thing--where someone is saying "the sky is green. it's green. i know it's green. i don't care if we're all standing outside and i'm looking up at it. i know it's green." that kind of shit can be sooooo frustrating.

but when someone nails it. my god. when i am able to read something where someone says, "and of course. you know why i'm saying that." and the other person goes very very still. feels a flush rise on the back of his neck. the mortification hot in his veins. you know why he repeats back in his head, cradling each jagged word. you know why. and he know. he knew it even as he hoped--stupid. it was stupid to hope anything different. "yeah," he manages. "sure."

BUT KASPER HE DON'T KNOW. HE DIDN'T KNOW. HE DIDN'T KNOW THE WHOLE TIME. KASPER THE THING HE'S SO SURE THE OTHER PERSON IS SAYING ISN'T RIGHT!! KASPER, HE'S BEEN LOVED AND WANTED AND CHERISHED AND HE THINKS HE'S NOT!!!!!!

hand in hand with that is saying--i really like it when people make a point to describe the physical effects a feeling has on the person's body rather than just naming the feeling. i activate BIG time when i'm reading about someone's blood pressure or their muscles tensing, or sweat at their temples rather than "he was stressed" or "he was upset."

@vivathewilddog and i often talk about the chuck palahniuk "thought verbs" essay which both of us were really influenced by. my FAVORITE style of writing now cuts way down "he thought" which really does make such a huge difference in the IMPACT of everything you're doing. especially if you're working with something with heightened emotions. it's SO delicious to read someone working so hard not to think something rather than letting them think it.

Izzy canonically thinks that Ed and Stede have been banging since at least the Run Me Through moment on-deck and possibly longer. And that Ed is the ensorcelled victim of Stede's magic dick. I would have loved for the proverbial penny to drop for Izzy that at that the time when Ed renounced Blackbeard/piracy/every cornerstone of his life with Izzy to save Stede's life, he had never even touched Stede's lips with his own, let alone had carnal knowledge of him. I think it's hilarious. Tim Drake spent much of his Robin Career being the cool, relatable, 90s nerdy teen. He chugs energy drinks. He skips school. He skateboards. He's the main character of a 90s teen sitcom. It is immensely funny to me that this theoretically-on-paper normal, oddly charismatic nerd loses most of his closest friends, his father figure, his title, the trust of his family, etc etc within the in-universe span of, what, a year and a half? Like it is SO funny to me that the universe just decided out of the blue "yo we gotta shit on Tim Drake RIGHT NOW" and then it happens in rapid and dramatic succession.

And keep in mind Tim is already unhinged (NOBODY NORMAL WOULD EVER DO THE FAKE UNCLE THING) so the fact that he he decides to go all in into an edgy new persona is like, comparatively reasonable and normal. But he's so uncool about it that he reuses another one of Jason's castoffs and doesn't change the name, because the idea of someone calling him something other than 'Robin' makes him want to curl up and die. It's the funniest, most dramatic way to do a cry for help.

Don't get me wrong, it's also extremely sad. However, I am a firm believer that things can be very sad and very funny at the same time. That's life, babey.

Within the context of my "everyone needs to do a 1-year stint in comics fandom" tags, the way I pick and choose my Tim canon is that I pile on every single ridiculous, over-the-top, dramatic and sad event, smash them all together, and shove them at a boy whose coping mechanisms start at "lie your ass off" and end at "blow shit up." This creates a very sad character. It also creates a very funny character. Yeah, giving Tim the love and support he needs is great, but also making him do increasingly elaborate cries for help without realizing he's crying for help is even better.

Anyway, Red Raven by PlotlessWanderer is the greatest Tim Drake fic of all time.

I'm not asking for a human au (for now), but maybe if you have any Jalice headcanons in a human universe that you'd like to share with the class?? I have a pretty random one (it isn't Jalice but it's basically canon for me at this point) that is basically Jasper being an older brother. Like, he has a BIG older brother vibe. And not only an older brother, but one for a sister. And his sister is little girl whose he's basically the primary caregiver, once (and this is the second part of the headcanon) they both were raised in foster care. Or have a dead parent and the other is absent. Jasper also has big absent parent's child vibe. All of this, of course, is prior to his drug addiction (the third part of the headcanon)

I only call it 'bonus' and 'unconfirmed' because it isn't in the twilight official illustrated guide but it was information given to fans by stephenie meyer back in the 2005/2006 era. but human!aus are always fun to read about! I really enjoyed reading Midnight Run back when it was being updated on ff.net, and I know @goldeneyedgirl has written a lot about human!jasper in different fics over the years, but I don't think you're alone in the 'jasper is an older brother' camp in the fandom. plus, with the way he ran away to join the army as a teen, you could headcanon all sorts of home-life dramatics for him, whether it's canon-compliant or in an AU setting! that's what's so fun about fandom and fanfic!! you can headcanon it all babey!

Oh, just the vague idea is that they're BUSY. Most of them have multiple commitments per day, depending on the season (ie swim and basketball season during winter VS no school in the summer.) It varies depending on which boy you're lookin' at, but most of them have things to do most, if not all, days of the week, and they like it that way. They've also just kinda been doing this their whole lives (due to always having so much gd energy and always wanting to do every thin g,) so it feels normal to them. Doing multiple things in a day and being busy from, like, 7AM to 9PM (with some breaks in between!) would typically feel reasonable and manageable to all of them. There are certainly days that are LESS busy but they tend to live chaotic lives overall.

Please note that all of them are free to quit any extracurriculars at any time, which their Dad has always been vocal abt because he DOES worry about them getting burnt out, and they have dropped things in the past (Leo used to take piano lessons! Donnie did debate team for a while!) but they all really like all the activities they currently do and luckily they all have stupid mutant super soldier genes behind them to take it all on. Donnie probably attends to least, like, practices and meetings and engages in the least structured/social activities, but he arguably does the MOST when you take into account how much solo time he puts into all his various hobbies, be it engineering or coding or dance or gymnastics. Mikey is probably also slightly more on that side of the spectrum, just due to the nature of a lot of his hobbies (ie art, cooking, skateboard, etc.) Leo and Raph are both a lot more inclined towards things like team sports or social activities, with Raph arguably being the most 'social' of the bunch in this regard since he not only teaches children, not only engages in multiple team sports, but also LEADS multiple team sports (captain of the football team, babey, AND the basketball team, AND the swim team--) but Leo is the one who craves "being busy" the most, I think. Other kids and parents watch on in awe and horror.

Also, they sure do!!! Mikey's therapist is named Catherine Neopolitan. Donnie's therapist is named Mossy, but I haven't given her a last name yet;;;

okay so this is another kind of complicated question, because the answer--as is the answer to a lot of things regarding haruhi--is that it depends.

i would say yes without hesitation, personally, because while the anime is a phenomenal adaptation there are several things that are by necessity lost in translation with the adaption to screen; and some stories have minor or major changes (see: remote island syndrome being very different, due to legal issues preventing a direct adaptation from ever airing on TV).

kyon's narration in particular is something that is very much cut down in the anime, which is an obvious thing to happen when you take a first person book and make it into a TV show. namely the things he says and the fact that you absolutely should not trust him at face value get lost.

so, let me break down each storyline and whether it has major or minor changes; without spoiling what those differences are any more directly than that. if you really want to jump into a new story, this should at least help you know where things will probably be noticeably different and what you could potentially skip over (at least for now).

the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya - minor changes, outside of the aforementioned narration and book-specific quirks (something that will be true of pretty much all the light novels. if any of them contradict this i will note that instead).

the sigh of haruhi suzumiya - minor changes (though i do stand by its light novel order place of 'right after melancholy even though that's not when it takes place at all' is incredibly important and the anime moving it to the end was most definitely a mistake).

the boredom of haruhi suzumiya - minor changes. this one is more visually interesting in the anime anyway, honestly; if you're going to skip some of them, you could probably come back to this later for the couple of funny moments i don't think made it into the anime.

bamboo leaf rhapsody - pretty similar, but also why would you ever skip bamboo leaf rhapsody. it's bamboo leaf rhapsody.

mysterique sign - only minor changes. again, like boredom, this was more interesting to watch in the anime. not required reading if you want to jump ahead.

remote island syndrome - as i mentioned earlier, this one has major changes! definitely read it regardless of what you do otherwise, it's different enough; those changes don't have major effects on anything to date, but things that didn't happen in the anime do occasionally get referenced in later material (most notably in the tempo loss bishop exchange of haruhi suzumiya, the koizumi pov short story by sou sagara--as a bit of a tangent, if you want a new story, i would recommend it; it seems to take place somewhere in the vicinity of disappearance even if its canonicity is somewhat debatable). i like certain aspects of the anime's rendition of remote island better, but i also prefer certain things from the light novel; it's hard to pick a favorite.

disappearance - very minor changes, to my memory. the disappearance of haruhi suzumiya is, for better or for worse, one of the single most faithful adaptations i have ever seen; and it's nothing short of a masterpiece in my mind in either form. it is absolutely worth reading the book (and it's actually the shortest of the long-form light novel stories, which makes its status as the third-longest animated film absolutely absurd to me), but you're not really missing out on anything if you save it for later.

live alive - minor changes. this one's also technically skippable, but i would highly recommend going back to it at some point; if only because it really does function as a much more pleasant epilogue to sigh.

adventures of mikuru asahina episode 00 - minor changes. this is another one where i honestly prefer the anime version, because a visual medium just makes it feel far less tedious.

(if you're wondering why someday in the rain is absent, that's because it was an anime original. it should be probably counted as canon considering it was written by nagaru tanigawa and slots in nicely as a prelude to disappearance and nothing has ever contradicted its events to date, but it's not adapted from the light novels; so it's irrelevant to this conversation.)

in conclusion: the only one i would say is for sure required reading if you want to jump ahead is remote island syndrome, because it has notable variation from the anime adaptation; and the light novel version is, as you might expect, the one considered canon to the light novels. the rest is (for the most part) absolutely worth revisiting, but you won't be missing out on too much jumping in at the new stories in rampage and wavering. the thing they rely most heavily on is disappearance, and that was easily the most direct page-to-screen adaptation.

I totally agree with you on reader insert fics. I think that's why I usually avoid them too (the clunkiness of them) they just usually don't feel as though they flow as well and the actual stories being told don't really capture my attention as much as they tend to lack depth (This isn't me yucking anyones yum tho! I hope everyone reads whatever they enjoy!!) Also I hope your real-life obligations are going well despite being more demanding than they used to be!

It did flow being read all in one hit! I liked the sound of the, I think it was the third fic that I saw first? Noticed it was part of a series so was like I should probably read it in order then I noticed the dates and was going back and forth on reading it in the order you wrote them or the order they you had placed them like chronologically and decided to go chronologically and there was no indication that you hadn't written it in that order. I did love going to the comments especially of the prequel and people being like "I can't wait to see her with the cannibal for the first time" and I was like witH THE WHO??? Also yeah there's a lot of chapters but they're needed!! I really love the way you have created a character that really does feel like they could belong in the canon and the edits you make to the story to fit her character feel so realistic (There's never enough chapters of this story and I'll be reading them all hehe)

I can definitely understand what you mean. Reader insert fic is, incredibly generally speaking, not designed to be sustained long enough for any kind of extensive plot, given that this inevitably requires the protagonist to develop personal characteristics in response to scenarios and choices made in-text. I love that Reader fic provides an immersive experience, but it is only really fully so if it is kept as neutral as possible, to prevent a breaking of said immersion. Giving the Reader a canonical family member, a physical characteristic, even a personality trait can arguably alienate parts of the prospective audience to different degrees (some of which are very much valid and pertinent critiques of reader-fic that diverge from neutral territory). Thus, it is not a mode that people intent on keeping strictly to form will use to write a long-fic. And thus—it can be argued, though agreement is obviously a personal choice here—Reader fic doesn’t generate the same possibilities for storytelling compared to your traditional OC fic, and therefore not as much audience attachment to original characters therein. I’ve had a fair amount of anxiety over the way I’ve chosen to write my own work, given that it is essentially an OC fic using no name and told in second-person POV, which diverges from the standard of acceptable reader-fic. It was largely an experiment that grew uncontrollably and now I’m in too deep to change it, haha. I have been very fortunate that this has accepted by the vast majority of my possible audience, or at least it has not been made a significant point of issue; I try to make it clear as much and as often as I can that I bear no ill intention in assigning identifying attributes to the MC, nicknamed ‘Babey’ to help further separate her from the ever-divergent-from-‘Reader’ vibe I’ve created.

The way I wrote it was an absolute mess, so I am beyond glad it reads chronologically, lol! I think I started with the second chapter of the third instalment, went back and wrote Chapter 1, went to Chapter 3 and continued, got halfway through and switched to the second instalment, wrote that, went back to the third instalment and wrote the second half, wrote the fourth instalment, fifth, then rewrote the second instalment (changed pacing, edited and added three extra chapters for better plot), wrote the first instalment, and now onto the sixth instalment. Absolutely ridiculous of me, I know. I’ve tried very hard to make sure it all fit, and I did have to retcon a few things as I went along. Luckily, from here on out it should be pretty much all chronological, thank feck. I’ve always been very much aware that my fic is a spin on the classic “added OC to canon” trope, and so I’ve tried where I can to not always show the exact same scenes playing out as they do in the show; where I can I will make adjustments or diverge slightly or cut away from the ‘main scene’ to focus on Reader’s inner dialogue. It’s not inventive, no, but my thought is that if it is canon adjacent and well-written, it can serve as a sort of coping mechanism for the fuckery I see on-screen. Reinterpreting The Horrors for my fanfic will definitely help me deal with the inevitable depressing ending of the Dance, lol, and potentially it might do the same for any readers? I’ve always personally liked canon adjacent fics, even if some rag on them. It is important to me that Babey feels like she is part of the universe, and I like doing that by building on existing scenes and events in the show to further enmesh this new character into the world and make it seem like a possible reality. That is not to say everything will happen exactly the same, clearly! But I want my fic to echo similar themes so that it really feels like it could have been an ‘alternate interpretation’ of the in-world history. If that makes sense! I’m writing this at 1am, lol.

I really do appreciate your messages so much. It can get a little lonely out here in the mean streets of Tumblr.com, haha, and there is a small delicate part of me that still squees and gets weepy and full-of-love-and-sunshiney at scraps of praise and validation. The anxiety is real, but ultimately I’ve gotten to a place in my life where I’m no longer willing to sacrifice my own source of happiness to seek universal approval; I love writing, I love my little universe, in my head it is real and thriving and my personal canon because it’s what came from my head and I love that I’ve done that. My life has gotten so much healthier from it. I have suffered from binge eating disorder and insomnia and clinical depression for a very long time, and I am so enthused and distracted by my writing that it has curbed my obsessive tendency to stress/comfort-eat, and so exhausted after clacking at my keyboard in the evenings that I fall right to sleep. Overshare. Yikes. But still, these things are true, and it is just really a super cool bonus that people happen to enjoy what I write! Your support means a helluva lot to me. Thank you.

y'all are so funny to me over here panicking and stressing meanwhile my state of delusion runs so deep that I simply refuse to accept canon if it differs from my prediction and I predict an angry sandray makeout at the music club BABEY!! Sand ain't holding rays shirt that tight whilst ray grips tf outta him for no reason. Also these are the faces of men who are toRn between a carnal desire to claim the other and another desire to shove him away and scoff in his face. ITS DELICIOUS. like look at how desperate rays expression is, he's trying to come off fierce but it's so clear how much he needs sand to reaffirm he still wants ray. Its like his face is begging sand to hold him and dig his claws in right back and kiss him hard even as he knows sand will likely shove him off and tell him to get lost.

Sand looks like a man on the edge between desire and spite, theres this pained look like he's fighting a losing battle. It's evident part of him wants to push ray around a little and yell at how stupid and selfish he is but another part is seeing the ray he's grown to care for, seeing those hollow eyes searching over him for hope and part of sand wants to crumble and give ray what he needs. Even if ray doesn't know how bad he needs it. Sand always wants to give ray what he needs. It's something he's growing to despise in himself whilst still being unable to resist the pull of. Now personally, I could be sad and frustrated or I could sit back and enjoy the yummy angsty meal JoJo is serving me about the hold love has on us and the ugly ways it can make us act.

Look, love is often glamorised to us as this beautiful wholesome thing that always mends and completes you. And sure love is that. But narratives often neglect to present the other side of love too, it can be selfish, possessive, confusing, desperate, all consuming, jaded, frustrating. It's a breath of fresh air to finally see a show, particularly a BL at that, highlighting the complexities of catching feelings and being in love whilst still capturing the hope that lingers and the beautiful moments mixed in when you see the best in someone as well as the worst. It reminds me a lot of The Priests speech on Love from the series Fleabag:

It's in The way that by the point you see them showing an ugly side it doesn't matter because they're already beautiful to you. It makes you fight for them to show up for themselves and you, even in moments you'd rather walk away and wash your hands of it. I have no idea if they'll get their happy endings. But I know that part of the fascination of watching sandray for me is that I have been that person, unable to give up on a love against all odds because what if I never love the same way again.

Anyways strap in for today's ep everyone and good luck recovering from the emotional rollercoaster it'll take us on. Remember to drink a hot cocoa, curl under a blanket, maybe cry and scream a little but try to laugh too and remember that the point of entertainment like this is to take us on a journey. There has to be bad and fighting in the trenches before there can be light and good. The mess and damage won't be this severe on the characters till the end just for a part of the duration of their growth.

If you're feeling hopeless just keep in mind that characters like Ray and Boston can't grow emotionally and get to any place where a hopeful ending is possible unless they travel to a very low dark point first, they're going to become worst versions of themselves before they can be the best and that will hurt people around them. But I truly believe JoJo wouldn't take these characters to those points unless he was going to use it to form some self realisations and repentance. Everyone will recover eventually because that's just life, we all have to. It has been said that characters must go to uncomfortable places to start contending with truths about themselves that allow an anti hero or antagonist to become something more of a vigilante or at least a better morally good (mostly) version of themselves and as a writer I know that often is a very effective method of characterisation.

You will get through this, your favourite ship will get through this. Dissect and enjoy the journey but don't let it haunt your mind to the detriment of your own whimsy and wishful thinking. Shows are made to be excited for each week. When you start dreading if the ending you hope for can happen it's time to take a breather. Don't let it affect your experience of a character or pairing and make it a negative one! That's what fix it fic is for or shows where these actor duos do get a happy satisfactory end. JoJo may write this story a certain way but you get to choose where you think the end works for you. Love you all, stay safe out there. Happy watching!!
