A lot more, recently! I used to avoid playing D.Va because I was bad at her, but recently I’ve started to pick up more hours on her. I’m getting better at timing her ult, which is nice.

McCree is literally my second most played hero and he’d have become my first very quickly if Sigma hadn’t come out. I have damn good accuracy as him and I’m really proud of that.

Any of them!!! I love McCree so much, I’m able to rock as him no matter the map I’m on. I still remember the first time I got a team kill with his ult, though, on Gibraltar. Man. Maaan, that was a good one.

I usually have this Van Helsing skin equipped because I love the way he says ‘Hail!’ for hello, but I switch skins based on the map I’m on. Darker colors for darker maps, yknow. I have everything for McCree except his golden gun ( because i just don’t play comp rip ) so i change a LOT.

I won’t lie, I’m into him and Hanzo but I hate the way that most portrayals of that ship are written so I never really… Look into it or read fic or anything of them. 

I like the idea of two gruff, been-through-hell older men trying to find redemption and see someone hurting in a similar way. Bounty hunters, mercenaries, men just trying to get by and make room for some good in the world. They were my first Overwatch ship because of a particular piece of art I saw before I owned the game that showed them as rugged, tired men and kind of made me biased toward the relationship before I even knew who they were.

( like, literally, i knew mccree was an overwatch character but i didn’t know who he was and i’d never seen hanzo before. i showed the art to a friend and she told me who they were. sddgdsdgfd. )

Otherwise, I love his platonic ships and his relationships with people like Sombra and Ashe and the entire Blackwatch group.

Hanzo finds McCree in the balcony outside after waking up to the empty coldness beside him. When he finally sees him he sees how his hands are laced together, his thumb scratching his nails absently, an unlit cigar loosely between this lips. He looks lost somewhere beyond the city he appears to be staring at. Slowly Hanzo opens the door, closes it and stands beside him in silence.

Two minutes of silence passes without McCree acknowledging his presence but he pays no mind to it and Hanzo waits. Five minute pass and Hanzo wonders briefly if McCree just wanted to be alone after all and his presence was unwelcome. Six and he makes to the door before he's stopped by a hand and a barely audible don’t go. He turns and leans against the rail besides the other, shoulders touching. The hand that was scratching at his nails eventually moves up to his hand and laces their hand together.

They watch the night pass in the city. There's barely life in it, a few cars driving by is the only light source in between the hotel and apartment buildings that surround the area. It’s not much of a view but the air is nice and cold in their face. Eventually McCree and lights the cigarette that’s been in his lips, slipping his hand away from Hanzo’s to hold it instead.

What feels like hours pass without any talk. The lack of sleep is starting to weight heavy on Hanzo, his brain too foggy to try to come up w any conversation that isn't the obvious. He finds himself wishing he could go back to sleep in the warm covers of their bed.

“You don't have to stay”. McCree eventually says, there's a soft laugh to his words and Hanzo wonders if he was speaking out loud just now. He really is tired and at his older age he can no longer afford lack of sleep like their time in Overwatch.

“I want to.” He replies, and its true or at least true enough.

McCree smiles and leads Hanzo by the hand to the small loveseat that they kept in their balcony and wraps his arm around Hanzo, slowly leading his head to his shoulder. “Sleep.”

Before he can protest McCree is wrapping his serape around them for cover and he’s humming some song Hanzo recognizes but not enough to name it. He doesn't fight it, instead he welcomes the warmness that McCree radiates.

Eventually the humming stops and Hanzo realizes he's been slowly falling asleep. He's not sure when it happens but he startles awake when McCree whispers into the air, “am I a terrible person?”

Hanzo's hand finds McCree's waist despite the awkward position and he pulls him closer. He wills his brain to work but now his brain is foggy with sleep and he can't think of anything helpful to say. He wonders if McCree wants comfort or is simply speaking out loud. Few times Hanzo doesn't know what to do and yet he feels completely helpless in that moment.

“No.” He says eventually, sitting up again and turning to see McCree in the eyes. “You're a good man Jesse. You hear? You…” he trails off trying to search for something to describe McCree but not a single word makes him justice. “You're stubborn and, and you’re so loud, all the time and somehow that hideous sense of fashion is still the same even now.”  McCree laughs at that but doesn't argue like he always does that its unique which makes it all the better.

“You're the embodiment of warmth,” he continues before McCree can protest, “and home and safety.”  He hesitates for a second because he'd said this a million times to him and he worries for a moment that the words hold no meaning after all its use. “Jesse.” he breathes. “You're the most thoughtful, friendly, most compassionate person I've ever known. Your past doesn't define you. You've grown, you've done better than when you were young.”

“Yeah.” McCree says flatly. It sounds to Hanzo like he'd not said enough nor the right things.

Instead he turns toward McCree so he's facing him and pulls him into hug so tight it almost hurts. McCree’s faces rest by his neck perfectly like the other had done for him before. There's a moment of confusion before Hanzo feels McCree holding him just as tight. It’s silent again but this time it doesn't feel suffocating like before, there's no more expectations of talk. Holding each other is enough for now if the tightness around him is any indication.

Some tears fall. Hanzo's not surprise, knowing that McCree's nightmares must had been from his days in Deadlock before he’d started using the name Jesse McCree for that question to come out out loud. Though he's not sure exactly which dream  nor how bad it was. He'd told him some over drinks with an almost slur but not enough to call him drunk but he also knows McCree had kept some to himself. It doesn't bother him, he understands from experience.

The tears dont last long this time but the tightness of the hug remains constant and Hanzo knows better than to be the one to pull away first. So he holds him and hope it's still helpful in a meaningful way.

“You want to talk about it?” he asks  in a whisper despite it all. If anything so he doesn't have to face it all alone in his mind. If anything because perhaps despite it all he would want to talk this time.

‘I just...” McCree says after a long pause and even after it he can hear the uneven inflection. “No,” he ends up saying after a prolonged silence.

“Okay.”

He wishes he could do more but words seem meaningless and empty that night so he keeps them to himself. Instead, he pulls a hand out of the embrace to start doing circles in McCree’s back, humming one of McCree’s song he’d learned in what feels to be another lifetime when they were still active agents. It takes a few minutes for McCree to relax to the movements and sound but eventually he can feel the tightness set in his shoulder dissipate.

“How have you not left me yet”. It's a whisper but he hears it all the same above his own humming.

It hurts to hear it, it always does when the words surface again. Hanzo hugs him tighter, wishing he could convince him truly once and for all that he will never leave him but he knows it doesn't work like that.

“I'm never leaving you hon. Ever,” he says pulling out of the hug so he can hold his face and make eye contact. It doesn't look like he's convinced despite the intensity he adds to the words. “No matter what, I promise you.”

“Okay.” He says simply. At least he sounds hopeful and Hanzo wants to believe he at least wants to believe it. He wants to believe that he trust him enough to know that he always keeps his promises, like he’d always done. “I hear ya.”  

Eventually McCree pulls him back into the hug, laying his head in Hanzo’s shoulder. Hanzo resumes the humming and the circles on his back.

“I love you, Hanzo Shimada. I swear on my mama’s grave I do.”

“Me too, Jesse McCree.” Hanzo replies. “I’ll always love you.”

Sometimes when Jesse and Gabe are away from each other for long periods of times do they ever risk a little time to tell each other they love each other? Maybe even phone sex or Skype sex?

I feel if they don't have time, they won't risk it. They both understand their jobs, though if a mission feels too risky they don't hesitate calling the other even in the middle of the field to say "you know i love you, right?" Because they don't know if they will live to say it in person. The first to do it was McCree, he got a bad feeling during a mission once and he switched to a private comm and said those words. At first Gabe was silent and asked why is he saying it in the moment . "In case i dont make it out of it; this just feels wrong." In came an ambush, luckily both did live, but ever since then, they do that when they feel a mission's about to go south. Just those 3 words, and the other responds with 4 before hanging up.As for phone/skype sex, if the one that's away finds sometime alone, he will start sending messages (McCree's so predictable, he always starts with "what are you wearing?" ) If Gabe calls right after, he was just as needy and missing Jesse just as much. If not, it only takes a few more messages and what Jesse would do to him if they were together to make the call.They take their time; one talks and orders while the other opens himself up. Then is almost like they're close enough from how well they know each other's body. Jesse can feel Gabe's teeth over his collar bones and Gabe feels Jesse's breath over his neck as both breathe into the phone. When its through skype, whoever's at base rides a toy for the other to see as they call for each other. Usually the one watching can come with out touching himself and they love it because their lover is so beautiful and they love each other so much, they can't wait to get together again.

December is usually suppose to be a wonderful time of year, full of magic, snow and candy- canined possibility. But, for the newly patched together and rickety version of Overwatch in the middle of rock in the balmy Mediterranean the holiday season might as well just been sugar plum infused fever dream.

Especially for the person souly in charge of trying to set up Overwatch's new medical wing out of what as literally an old storage room in a forgeten corner of an abandoned base.

Angela let out a long patient sigh as she eyed the furry green garland snagged around her ankle. " Lena...Genji... " She glanced over at the box of holiday decorations and fake snow that seemed to have exploded in the middle of the path. The young pilot and her former patient had taken on the task of trying to bring a little bit of the holiday spirit to the base. Although Lena always seemed to have enough of that to power a Christmas village on her on. " Could you... maybe start decorating the space shuttle for a bit first ? "

Lena glanced over and dropped tape gun the moment she saw the trapped doctor, " Oh! Sorry about that, love And Winston is already working on that.!" She giggled as she zipped over and untangled Angela's black boot from the garland. " Didn't realize how much of a mess we made . "

" I can see that...." Angela lowered her foot and looked around at the little courtyard just outside the area Winston's office was . The normally industrial looking cluster of buildings was had been magically transformed while she had been using Athena to help her figure out how to recover some old medical files from the older headquarters data bases . The bunker-like buildings and metal towers were now glittering in wreaths, lights, bows...and Angela even spotted a little silver menoria decoration in one of the frosted over windows of the data building.

" .... Why is in one Torbjorn's turrets up on the bridge? "

Genji chuckled as he started winding up a cord lights, " It was Lena's idea . "

" We're going to make it snow!" She explained, happily, " There's going to be another one right outside your office too, Angela! Figured it would be nice to bring a home right outside your window. And im having Emily work a few surprises for everyone too. I'll being those later in the week. "

" That's really isn't nessary, Lena ...but thanks for the thought. Just, do me a favor and check to make sure Torbjorn actually turned the turned off fire-arms mode. The last thing I need is Genji asking me for healing again when I dont even have beds in the infirmary yet. "

Angela laughed and shifted the stack of files in her arms, " well, I'm going to sort some of these out ans see where we are on supplies. so if anyone needs me , I'll be over in my office . " She took a few steps down the road and stopped before looking around the little makeshift village square again.

" Lena, are you getting a tree too?"

Tracer nodded as she tosses a next of blaming fairy lights over a giant supply box, " Of course! Brigette and Reinhardt should be back with it soon. I was going to send Jesse, but you know with the whole bounty-thing.....", Lena instantly drifted off as soon as she realized what she was saying and quickly looked over at Angela like she has ran over her cat as Genji quickly stopped to listen," oh, love im Sorry.."

" Lena, stop it's alright. " Angela instantly stopped her , although there was still a thread of awkwardness threading under her understanding tone.

It wasn't like her and Jesse were bitter exes who wanted to burn the room down at the mere mention of the others name-- the truth was, she actually always understood WHY he left overwatch-- But.. it was still awkward between them now. Even though they were both in the deep end of their thirties by now, Angela sometimes felt like a teenager again with trying to figure out where they stood with each other after ...everything. She didn't want to admit it, but sometimes she did make excuses up about setting up equipment or files just so she could avoid him for a bit or give him space. And, if she still knew jesse mccree as well as she use to , she probably would be surprised to find out he was doing something similar.

But the thought of actually unpacking 6 years of what ifs or..whatever lay between them now was....

Angela quickly clamped down on the thoughts before they wrapped around her like the garland.

She sighed and gave Lena a smile, " I'll be fine. We're a team, right ? And adults. Jesse and I will figure something out. Now, I really do need to get this files done. " Angela could practically feel Genjis gaze on her , even behind his visor as she walked off and knew he be at her office later for another talk.

She made a mental note to make some of her valkyrie's flight for that.

Dexterous. Careful. Conniving. They are the hands like what you’d expect of a trained thief, a hacker, or a ninja in his case. His fingers are worn in some aspects, but nothing that you notice when he’s always, constantly touching you.

Genji never seems to stray from your side for long unless he needs to, and on down-days that seems to be a rarity. He’s some odd combination of partner and service cyborg, and sometimes seems more attentive than you are for your own mental health. You’ve learn to trust his words as much as your own, often falling into his arms whenever he opens them for you. 

The two of you have dealt with hurt in your own ways, but there’s something calming about being together. Something sweet about how he’s always touching you, always holding your hand, as if he’s afraid you’ll wander off. His hugs are tight, firm, grounding you to the moment and his heartbeat.

Nights are often spent with him stroking your cheek, watching you fall asleep.

Hanzo

Though he seems unmovable, Hanzo always seems so shy when he indulges in the common moments of physical comfort. Unsure. Inexperience is nothing more than an initial misunderstanding, and it takes some time for you to realize that his hesitation is often from his worry in overwhelming you. Irony aside, his moments of physical comfort are honest and true--his hands touch you with gingerness, and his arms wrap around you like the winds of a storm: powerful, full of awe and wonder. 

Much like the feeling of protection of being buried in a blanket in the wake of a rainstorm, Hanzo’s hugs are firm and tight, seemingly endless in the moments when he doesn’t want to let you go. Sometimes in the dead of night, the two of you in bed together, even he shares in some of the tears and emotions. He’s healing too, past wounds you can’t begin to understand, but loving you helps just like the way you love him.

He is the loving storm.

This is mostly based off of a personal experience but how do you think Hanzo would react to Jesse taking him to his first ever Pride Parade? Out of curiosity tbh, no offense or anything :)

okay okay so,,,, the LGBT+ situation in Japan is not so good and it’s even worse in such an old world organization like the Yakuza, so Hanzo likely had not experienced any kind of open acceptance in his homeland. also he’s canonically a reserved man who prefers his private affairs (like sexuality) to remain just that– so i think that it’s very likely that he kept his sexuality very close to his chest and had never celebrated it before. ALSO he is, canonically, a man who loves fun; jokes, drinking, teasing, etc.!

that being said, I think his first reaction to pride would be shock and possibly a little fear. like lbr, everything is LOUD and BRIGHT and BEAUTIFUL and GAAAAAY at pride and yes, Hanzo expected this but holy fuck he did NOT expect this. i think it would very much be a whole “i know what this is like” and then “i had no clue what this was like im an Idiot” situation. i think he’d be overwhelmed (but in a GOOD way) at how open everyone is at pride and how truly happy they are to be themselves. like yes, he’s seen people comfortable and public with their sexuality before, but never on such an enormous scale. 

i think his second reaction would be apprehension. he’s canonically a cautious man– it comes with being a sniper– so while he can appreciate others being loud about their sexuality, i think Hanzo would need to be coaxed a little bit. referring back to his aloof nature, i don’t think he’d be comfortable with outright blasting his sexuality from the start, if at all. McCree understands this, i think. McCree is canonically an empathetic man, so i think he’d be perfectly okay with Hanzo just wanting to watch and not really be in the thick of it. dancing off to the side, holding hands, cheering for others– these are all things Hanzo is comfortable with doing.

but once Hanzo is accustomed to his surroundings and to the pride vibe, i think he would 100% want to have as much fun as possible! most of all, i think he would enjoy being someplace with jesse where he doesn’t have to feel like it’s taboo or it’s inappropriate to be affectionate. :>

Reyes finally gives in to McCree. 

In Blackwatch they’re called deathgrams.

All operatives are kitted out with the standard GPS beacons, but some take it a step farther. Internal monitoring equipment is not required - it can show up on invasive scans, which can be difficult to explain during undercover work.

But for some soldiers, when their heart stops, they want it to be known. Death triggers a virtual intelligence to initiate any number of protocols, everything from warning brothers-in-arms against rushing into danger to recover a mere corpse to remotely deleting sensitive information from datapads. Sometimes agents with families use it to send goodbye letters to loved ones.

Four days after McCree fails to meet his check-in Gabriel gets an automated message in his personal inbox.

Hey Boss.

Feel weird writing this. Always figured that anyone lucky enough to get me would get you to, but in case your still kicking around then I wanted to say sorry. I aint a fortune teller so I got no way of guessing what does me in, but I know your probably pissed as hell about it. do me a favor and make sure the asshole who got me gets his, alright?

I aint gonna let this get to heavy. It wouldnt be fair to unload all that on you since you cant exactly answer back. Point is, you know how I felt. I never said it outright, but I’m not any more subtle than you are stupid. And since regs don’t much matter now, I just wanted to let you know that I love you. Always did, always will. I could tell you cared about me too, so dont fret about me going to my grave without knowing it.

I never had much religion in me, but if there is an after Ill keep a seat open up at the bar for you. Just dont rush to get here.

Gabriel reads it twice over. He commits the message to memory, complete with McCree’s lack of understanding of basic punctuation principles. The words, he keeps with him. The meaning, he’ll deal with later. Someday.

He purges the message from Overwatch’s server, then gets back to coordinating the recovery mission.

“You’re a son of a bitch,” Reyes grumbles at McCree’s bedside just a couple days later.

The cowboy is unconscious, pallid, and missing an arm. He might lose a leg too, but Zeigler is hoping to save it. But McCree is stable, and though his future with Overwatch is up in the air, he will live.

Oh, he’ll live. He’ll live to pay for putting me through that, a wayward voice in Gabriel’s head huffs. He’s so emotionally exhausted that even the relief of Jesse’s survival hasn’t fully hit him yet. Happiness will come later, after sleep.

The drill sergeant in Gabriel who usually stomps out thoughts like that instead lays off this time.

Less than two months. That’s all the time it takes before McCree is up and walking on his own legs, barely acquainted with the artificial arm prototype but already begging to get back to work. He’s got some healing to do yet and then has to be evaluated, but it’s looking to Reyes like he’ll be fine to return to Blackwatch. Angela really is a miracle worker.

“Say,” McCree starts slowly, and Gabriel has been waiting all day for this. McCree’s been helping out with clerical duties in his office (not without complaint of boredom, but still). Recently the cowboy’s been hung up, trying to talk about something uncomfortable but afraid to spit it out. “While I was MIA, you didn’t happen to, uh, get any weird messages?”

Reyes plays it cool. “Weird messages?”

“Hell, I only ask ‘cause I had one of them chips that kicks on when it don’t detect no life signs. Thing is, chip was in my arm. So, well, I found out that when the arm got taken off, the VI went ahead and sent off some… premature e-mails.”

Reyes sets his datapad down. This conversation has been a long time coming, yet he still doesn’t know how he wants to answer. If McCree wants to stay in Blackwatch then Gabriel has to not have seen the man’s dying declaration. He could lie, say the message never got through, and they can continue maintaining the indefinite holding pattern of “don’t ask, don’t tell”. He’d be saving both their careers from going down thanks to gossip and scandal at best, fraternization charges at worst.

On the other hand, he’d nearly lost Jesse.

“What’s the date?” Gabriel feigns completing some paperwork. McCree will understand. After a short pause the subject is allowed to drop.

“It’s the fourteenth, Boss.”

He feels himself frowning. February fourteenth. Valentine’s Day.

Gabriel Reyes was not a man who put much stock in signs from the universe, but even he had to admit it was one hell of a coincidence. Especially since they’d found McCree, busted up but still breathing, on Christmas Eve.

“Can you believe we’re finally doin’ this?” Jesse asks in a hoarse whisper, eyes drifting blissfully closed while Gabriel kisses down the curve of his shoulder.

The commander chuckles against Jesse’s skin. He’d said finally. Not “actually” or “really”, but finally - like it was inevitable that they end up half-undressed and rubbing cocks like horny teenagers. And shit, maybe it was inevitable. In nine years while everyone else in his life had broken his trust, Jesse was the only one determined to be at Gabriel’s side. He was the only one Gabriel couldn’t afford to lose.

He rolls his hips, pinning Jesse down to the couch. Every repressed fantasy about bending McCree over his desk, all the nights spent with his hand down his sweatpants, thinking of his second’s pouting lips have nothing on the real thing. Gabriel meets Jesse’s upward bucking in time, and they’re both too damn hard to do anything but hang on for dear life.

“Say you’re mine,” Gabriel moans, throat dry and completely, utterly heedless of it.

“Yours, darlin’. You got me. Always did.”

He says it like a promise, and in their clumsy rutting Jesse pulls Gabriel to him. He seals it with a kiss that tastes like bitter cigar smoke.

For the first time in decades, Gabriel gives himself over to it.

the torbcourse, version 2.0

around 2 weeks ago, i made a very long post about the amount of hate/types of hate being directed @ the character Torbjorn from overwatch.  I actually never expected it to gain much traction, given i only had about 100 followers at the time it was posted.  

thats the backstory.  it now has over 7,000 notes on it. if you never actually saw it going around on tumblr, here’s the permalink to it if you’re interested in what i said on it.  the tl;dr of it though, is that most of the hate has some root in ableism.  

Torbjorn has dwarfism.  i got too many people asking for the source on that, and so i’ll just say it up front. someone who medically has dwarfism is beneath the full grown height of 4′10.  Torbjorn is only 4′7.  regardless of any and all references and poking at world of warcraft “dwarves”, as dwarves dont exist in the real world this classifies him as the very first little person who is a playable character in a videogame, to my knowledge.

I should clarify before I begin with v. 2.0, as i should have then, that im not referring to how he’s annoying in game to play against.  the amount of responses i got that “i only dislike him because i dont like playing against him” is overwhelming.  I’m referring to comments about how he’s unshippable, the complete and utter lack of him in fanart and fanwork, to calling him ugly or claiming that he’s undeserving of any of the things has has, from his family to his wife to his friends.  those things are entirely unrelated to gameplay, and entirely related to how people producing and consuming overwatch fandom content perceive him.

I am gonna put the rest under a “read more” bc mom, holy fuck, this is a long, long read, but i tried to be as concise and answer the various rebuttals i’ve gotten over time that weren’t total nonsense.  Additionally, if you could spread this that would be nice, because, damn.  If i leave one good thing on this fandom without a doubt I do want it to be a reevaluation of how we treat certain characters.  

i think that deflection is actually a good bouncing point to start off with.  So many people say that “I only hate him because of gameplay” and i just want to say that is very much patently wrong. The most hated character to play against in overwatch, to my knowledge, is Mei.  Symmetra is quickly coming in as a close second because of how overpowered she’s become after the massive buff blizzard gave her.  And yet, you see tons of fandom content with both mei and symmetra.  Yes, originally, torbjorn was a very hard character to counter because of hero stacking, but after both nerfs hit and there was the elimination of hero stacking, he’s become far more manageable to play against and has been entirely eliminated from the meta.  The same is true of bastion- who also is included in overwatch fanworks frequently.

I cant say for lower ranking players at all how that works, but as i am a diamond player the meta is pretty close to what i actually play.  Frustrating? sure, but no more so than bastion, who is also difficult to play against in the short turn but if you counter correctly isn't much of a hassle.  Its actually to the point both bastion and torb need a bit of a nerf to bring back onto the player map.

However, there is an unprecedented amount of hate directed at him considering all of these factors, essentially I’m saying he’s actually less frustrating than other characters who receive more content than him and another character hated for the same reason also doesn't get the same treatment as torbjorn.  the reason im saying that is, is unconscious ableism.  I’m not saying you’re consciously thinking “he’s ugly, im going to add more hate onto an issue because of that,” im saying that there is a complex process where your anger and frustration towards his playstyle is aggravated by an unconscious bias against disabled people.  

Think of it in a different context- you are in a checkout line at the grocery store.  The cashier is going slow, because they are moving slow because, say, they have downs syndrome or are perhaps are an amputee.   the issue is yes, they’re being slow and you, in a humans inherently selfish manner, care about your time as well.  there’s that disconnect in your mind because you dont want to call someone the r-slur or point out that they are having trouble bagging because they dont have full use of motion.  (though some might not share your unwillingness, lord knows i’ve heard grocery store employees get harassed before).  But you are still irritated with them in a way they are undeserving of receiving.  Even if you keep it quiet while interacting, sometimes as I’ll hear my mother say after she leaves, “I understand they’re trying to be inclusive, but does it have to get in my way like that?”  Rather than being irritated at being slow, it transforms into irritation that they are disabled and therefore getting in your way.  

the tl;dr of that is that yes, even though you’re not necessarily angered/made upset by the disability it can become an aggravating factor in response to another irritant.

Moving on- the “creepy” trope as applied to torbjorn.  I would personally like to thank @necromin for this comment, even though I cannot tag you in this?  

It is true!  There is a massive trope and history surrounding the idea of dwarfs/little people as being depraved or perverse, or imp-like.  Our willingness to apply how some people use torbjorn to the character itself is not a thing that just happens in a void.  How fandom interprets the intent of his voice lines also does not occur in a void.  

Another commonly said thing in the tags was that oh, i only hate him because he hates omnics!!! and as many, many other people pointed out, that in itself is a fallacy, because plenty of characters in overwatch dislike omnics.  From Zarya (who outright threatens both Zenyatta and Bastion), to Junkrat (Also makes threatening lines towards the Shambali monastery), to Reaper (tin cans, a dime a dozen), there is a long history of hating omnics for a variety of reasons. Interestingly, he’s not even so much a “violent racist” as some would have him made out to be.  His line to bastion (I hate working with those talking tin cans!) actually does make some sense, because he did have to fight against them in the war, and can you blame him for not wanting to go into the Shambali monastery or Numbani after seeing what large numbers of omnics grouped together can do?  Far more violent omnic “racist” lines are Junkrats- (If these bots want to go into the light, I'd be more than happy to help), and (So we're delivering a bomb to scrap some bots and I'm getting paid for it. My kind of job!)

However, much like how characters who are also “annoying” to play again dont receive the same amount of flack, there is a hypocrisy in that a lot of the people who claim not to like torbjorn because of this, love and produce content of other characters like reaper, or zarya, or junkrat.  and so the question that lies therein, is “why does torbjorn get hated for this reason more than those other characters?”  the answer is back at the end of the second paragraph.  

And a lot of people call it “omnic racism”, but as a poc blogger who can state it far more elegantly than i can, racism is a very inadequate, if not inappropriate word to describe the relations between omnic and human in the overwatch world because of why omnics are hated.  they started a worldwide war that threatened the very existence of humanity, caused total chaos for an undetermined amount of time.  Racism is an inappropriate word because this implies that racism as we know it has a cause that is justifiable,  since “omnic racism” is rooted in a very much justifiable history. and thats just not true.  The same can be said of x-men being used as an allegory for racism, because there is a fear that is understandable, when in irl racism it is very much not.

but that is just a sidenote, and not really the focus of this.  

a lot of people also asked if this was a joke.  or treated it like a joke.  I am very much serious about this, and a lot of people agree with me that it got very much out of hand, and some people who were guilty of falling into the ableist route of mocking torbjorn for being ugly/unshippable apologized for it or admitted this opened their eyes some to their own internal biases.  Others still insist that hating him is just a meme.  Then, Lets move onto what i am talking about that i count as hate, but is a bit less obvious to see unless you’re looking for it- which is, the erasure of torbjorn’s character in fanworks.  first i’ll start with the math of it, and then i’ll go into other things of note.

If it is just a meme- than riddle me this-why can you quantitatively conclude that he has significantly less content of him than practically any other character in the game? 

The overwatch archive of our own has over 10,000 fanworks on it now.  The two most common pairings on it are mchanzo and reaper76, each steadily on their way to 2,000 works apiece. The 3 most-tagged characters are all original members of overwatch- McCree, Reaper, and Mercy.  8 of the 10 most tagged characters if you include Amelie and Fareeha, had some major relation to the original overwatch or were members.  9 if you include hanzo, being genji’s brother.  Each of them have over 1,000 fics apiece where they are tagged, and really more like 1,500-2,000+ fics apiece where they are tagged.  (Jesse with almost a whopping 4,000 fics where he’s tagged)

Torbjorn only has 437 fics where he’s been tagged.  Of those fics, he’s not in any of the top 10 most tagged relationships.  Compared to any of the other 5 founding members of overwatch that we know of, that is very strangely low.  Reinhardt is tagged in roughly 1,100 fics, Ana, 1,200 fics, 76, over 2,000, and reaper with over 3,400 fics tagged.  

As a side note, the only character with less fics than him is Bastion, who only has about 240 fics where they are a tagged character.  But this isnt necessarily not understandable- they have no spoken lines whatsoever that arent some sort of robotic onomatopoeia, or omnicmatopea, as i might call it.  Even sombra has more fics than him by a slim margin, but it strange considering she’s the new character, and he was one of the very first ones to be released.

The other interesting thing of note is the dramatic drop off in fics after Winston, who also has a relatively small number of fanfics compared to his role as one of the main characters of the series.  of the 7 characters who have less than 1000 fics to their name, 4 of them are women, 3 are woc, and 2 have confirmed disabilities that are unconventional in video games on top of being amputees.  

but please, tell me again that people aren’t interested in torbjorn because he’s a white man.  say it to my face while we both can see the enormous amount of content for Junkrat, Reinhardt, and 76.  

Its harder to quantify this, but when you read as much overwatch fanfiction as I do, you start to pick up on a few trends that are subtle but important to denote nonetheless.  First off, is that when in fics where the “original” members of overwatch are a friend group, Torbjorn is oddly left out.  Second, in the fics that take place prior to overwatch’s fall and there is some sort of science/ engineering/ mechanical fix involved, the role usually is given to Winston- even if it doesnt make sense timeline wise to have Winston even be there, in Overwatch.  

as another side note, an easy benchmark is this- in your overwatch fanwork, if Fareeha Amari is under the age of 18, then Tracer, winston, and genji aren’t yet members of overwatch.  Tracer and winston are both younger than Fareeha by a handful of years (tracer by 6 years, winston by 3) and Genji joined after he turned 25 (if Fareeha is 18, then genji is only 21)

Ok, but if Winston isnt a member, then who would be the one to do the fixes and technological stuff in Overwatch?  that should be easy, given that Torbjorn is both an original member of overwatch and a world class, genius engineer who is stated in canon to be the designer behind a great deal of Overwatch’s technology.  So why do i see time and time again that he’s just not present in these fanworks?  (See the end of paragraph 2).

The same is true in fanart.  He is mostly not included in comics where it would make complete and utter sense for him to be there.  If its a comic about the golden 7- dont exclude Torbjorn from it. (the golden 7 being, gabriel, jack, ana, reinhardt, mercy, mccree, and torbjorn).  As another person pointed out, he’s likely considered practically family to people like Mercy or Reinhardt or Pharah and Ana.  If I see a comic with 6/7 of them in it, and I dont see torbjorn, i do wind up very, very suspicious.  Not of the artist purposefully saying “I dont want to draw torbjorn because he’s ugly / disabled”, but of unconsciously devaluing his character and place in the series because of those aforementioned biases and so erasing him from the fanwork altogether.  

The same thing with him being “shipped” in fanwork.  I referenced this anecdote in the original post, and the numbers confirm that essentially no one is producing content with him in a relationship in fanwork.  It is not always so overt as people saying he’s disabled and therefore unattractive, but rather people finding him unattractive because he’s short, because he’s disabled.  

and lastly, returning to the point of him being a WOW dwarf and him being an uninteresting character for the special kind of ignorant-

“they just dont care about him so they dont bother reading about him, believe me, most people who make fun of torbjorn think hes a fantasy kind of dwarf rather than a character with dwarfism lol

im not saying that fandoms have not disliked a character purely because of their disability before but seriously, its kind of blizzard’s fault for making a character with dwarfism look literally a stereotypical fantasy kind of dwarf without a very interesting backstory or personality.”

Im not tagging this person, im not interested in “callouts”, but this person had both the accusation that people who dont like him because they dont care about him, and so they dont bother reading about him and then say explicitly they just dont care about torbjorn because they believe he’s without a interesting backstory or personality.

From literally everything about his character, how on earth can you conclude he’s not an interesting character with a good personality/backstory?  He was one of the 6 founding members of overwatch, of the 6 he was the only one with any sort of background in causing the crisis, even though he voiced disapproval of intelligent AI to businessmen who were looking to make profits over the safety of others.  In his profile, it says that his worst fears were confirmed when the omnic crisis began.  How come there arent a ton of fics about him seeing his worst fears come to light when that clearly would be a very interesting topic of fanwork- and a very common theme in Overwatch canon and fanon.  (Ie, mercy fanfics and addressing her resurrecting Gabriel, Hanzo’s regret about listening to orders and murdering genji.)  Thematically, the idea of your past coming back to haunt you places torbjorn in with the other characters very well. Similarly, in recall fics, torbjorn seeks out even now, post-fall of overwatch to right the wrongs he made in his youth with the creation of the omnics that are huge.  Storywise, torbjorn is actually both incredibly important and intriguing.  Thematically, his character also fits right in with the various themes established in the lore amongst the older characters.  

Overall, though, this person is correct, because yeah.  People dont read about him because people dont care about him.  But the question is why don’t people care about him enough to know that he’s actually a character who fits right in with everyone else?

And the answer to that question, is on some level, undoubtedly, ableism, due to his disability making him “unattractive” and therefore “unshippable” and therefore unworthy of most attention in fanworks, or his disability making him “unattractive” and “unworthy of friendships” and therefore not included in platonic works with the characters.  

Anyways.  I’m still tired.  Hopefully I communicated calmly what I meant + more people will be receptive to understanding what I’m trying to get across- that regardless of intent or the original reason of why they hated torbjorn, his physical disability is worsening insults and magnifying dislike of him, and causing him to be erased altogether in both fanart and fanfic.

Robin - tiefling maga (the class name is actually magus but Robin is a she so) with the skirnir archetype (the base class equivalent of the prestige class of the Eldricht Knight, but with the archetype that makes her a shield mage basically) - Angst™  - wants to do the right thing and she will do it - her favourite Overwatch character would be Pharah or Reinhardt - she has a shield and she’s not afraid to use it - always stressed af does she even sleep - always hears the voices of her devilish inheritance - praying conforts her a little tho - a very religious person - well she was raised by a priestess of the god of love and compassion, so - yea she was abandoned as a child bc her parents were nobles and you can’t have a tiefling daughter that would be A Bad Thing - so a priestess adopted her and teched her how to be a rlly good person and to protect the innocent - “I BELIEVE IN U o wait did u just killed an innocent now im gonna Fuck You Up™”  - “a sex drive what is that where is sex driving does it have a license”

Ume

- sea elf shaman (hybrid class between the witch and the oracle) - like,, indecision but as a person - has an hawk as a familiar wihich is pretty strange bc she is really tied with the spirits of the sea - looks like a cinnamom roll is actually a cinnamom roll - “do you prefer red or blue” “I LOVE BOTH OF THEM U CAN’T MAKE ME CHOOSE” - the kind of fangirl who has way too many ships - likes swimming - except for that one time when she almost drowned she didn’t like swimming in that moment - Moana vibes - yeah u know moana was so good and im so weak that’s why she lives in an island and talks to the sea sometimes - there was that one time when she flirted back at Ikaro and he almost died for the surprise - she was, like, the Best Shaman Apprentice on the island but she wasn’t really sure wheter become shaman or not bc if she accepted her role she wouldn’t be able to see the world - but at the same time she loves her island and her people so - yeah she kinda gets homesick a lot - but she got to see the Arcanum and the big cities and the Moon Mountains and the Ramil Desert so there’s that - her hawk is cute, she screm - witch shaped like a friend

Ikaro

- the Human Token™, a gunslinger - dat boi - son of a gun - jesse mccree but as a pirate - birate - lovechild of Han Solo and Jesse McCree  - “im not a pirate im a buccaneer” - the fuckboiest fuckoi that ever fuckboied - tried to flirt with Ume and got a “stop embarassing yourself!” from Taro - “the loser had it coming” –cit. @eldrich-archivist - has seen some shit - stole some of that - and murdered some other - he doesn’t regret killing people, but that doesn’t mean he likes doing so - “i’m not good, i’m not bad, but i sure as hell ain’t ugly” - travelled on a pirate ship for many years - he feels like he is searching for something, in the vast seas of Gaea, but even he doesn’t know what, or who - has a Dark Past™, that’s why he’s on the run - not the captain on the ship he’s on - just one of the many men on board - (his captain is a very badass aasimar lady maybe i’ll give a backstory to her later) - sinnamom roll - flirted with Kevin and Lem almost stabbed him - then flirted with Lem and Kevin almost killed him with a lightning - also likes flirting with death - kinky af, probably into bondage - lowkey a furry

- dwarf sorceress/bard but a dancer - she’s mute, so she casts spell while dancing - travelled with a travelling circus - ran away from her home in the Underworld bc she’s transgender and feared that her father wouldn’t understand - her powers come from the storm (stormborn bloodline) - Taro’s nickname for her is “Lady Thunderdwarf” - Taro is also a very good friend of her, he sings for her and she dances - sometimes when she dances she summons the rain unconsciusly - her name means “happy” or “cheerful” in Italian - cinnamom roll, too good for this world, too pure - hates little and close spaces - has a birthmark that is suspiciously similar to the holy symbol of the god of the wind but?? maybe it’s a coincidence??? maybe not??? who knows - at first she can only talk with Kevin bc he’s the only one in their “party” that knows sign language but then they teach it to everyone - she and Kevin are really great friends bc they both know how it feels to be an outcast - didn’t believe in love at first sight until she met Zero - “ALLEGRA STOP THROWING MAGIC AT MY DOG HE’S BITING THIN AIR YOU’LL MAKE HIM FEEL SAD” - never came out to her dwarven family, and she regrets that a little - but she’s still scared, so she doesn’t write to them - she has two brother (one older and the other younger; the former has died) and a younger sister; her mother died when she was little so she doesn’t remember much - she doesn’t know, but her father cares deeply about her, even if he still thinks of her as a “him” - family is very important to dwarves, and she feels that Ume and Kevin and the other are like a family to her now - before she met Taro, when she was still travelling with the circus, she danced on the music of Kakeru, a young bard from the Eastern continent that is the Kukize that is very good at playing the shamisen and teached her how to read his native language and told her the myths and the legends of his land. she teached him the sign language and how to read dwarven runes - she can forge things bc that’s a thing that every dwarf learns, but she is no master of that art - i love her so much asklabaksdsksfgagsds
