CHAINSAW MAN SPOILERS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I read Yogen no Nayuta while not very far in the csm manga, but I donโ€™t know how I never pieced together that he updated Nayuta to become the next control devil. Or I guess sheโ€™s always been like Nayuta but was raised by the government and didnโ€™t get any love, so she turned out different. I know it was probably obvious to other people considering they have the same name, but I only just realized this today.

Yโ€™all already know what time it is!
I will say that with Barem specifically calling Nayuta a witch instead of a demon/devil or any other word is very interesting. Fujimoto has gone on to say that he is very specific with the wording in his works, which is why thereโ€™s not instance of Christianity being used despite some symbolism and references.
But the word โ€œwitchโ€ was also used in Fire Punch. The Ice Witch, Sulya, who was the antagonist with a main goal of watching the last star wars movie (almost as goofy as saving the world for Pizza). Could be a reference to Fire Punch given how Nayuta is now undoubtedly a reference to Yogen no Nayuta where she was the harbinger of doom said to end the world. Even in Yogen no Nayuta, one of the few ways Kenji (her older brother) and her bonded was through food.

I really like how Chainsaw Man #147 makes a clear callback to Tatsuki Fujimoto's earlier one shot, Yogen no Nayuta.
It's clear that a lot of the early concepts around the nature of the protective relationship between Kenji & Nayuta heavily influenced the relationship dynamic between his main characters in Chainsaw Man, with Denji & Makima (Nayuta), but that facets of those roles were expanded to Aki & Power and differentiated in important ways, like Aki being more of an older sibling & Power being the horned feline-like juvenile sibling, allowing the protective attachment relationship between Denji & Makima to be something very different before it came into its current form.
It's clear that the way violence gets amplified by fear mongering and disconnections in communication styles were laid out there in ways that have been a central element of Chainsaw Man, and have only been growing since then. Given the extremely complex examination of the role of the figurehead that took place in his other manga Fire Punch, which also formed due to traumatic attachment and distorted bonds of a severed protective sibling relationship, it's been fascinating how he's made Denji & Chainsaw Man both powerless to the groups that they influence while ONLY having that bond left.
I feel like Tatsuki Fujimoto's writing captures a very specific nuance of both individual and societal maladaptive coping mechanisms to trauma in a way where even these big, insane events will always pull back into a tiny individual scope โ€” but one which never disconnects itself from the continuum of the larger environment in which it takes place.

The Fire Devil
One thing I love about the devils in Chainsaw man part 2 is how creative they've gotten. Everything with the Falling devil and now with the Fire Devil.
It's such a clever misdirect cause not only is about how the chainsaw man church spread but also passion and desire. Fire spreads astonishingly a fast just like how the CSM Church spread to Canada and China and most of Japan. It's also the desire and passion to fight for chainsaw man, although this has twisted into the absolute maximum. As the numbers grow, the battle is only gonna get more intense. And its spreading given the amount of fuel (contracts).
It's so much more than physical fire.
Also, theory for the handful of people who read Fire Punch.
Seigi Akoku, one of the named members of the Devil Hunting club at school and one of the students trapped in the aquarium, is my top pick for the fire devil. Seigi means "righteousness" or "justice", with the justice devil being revealed in 146 to be the fire devil not only that, Yuko said that the Justice Devil was at their school and Yuko also burned her neighbor during Chapter 106: Bonfire.
This is beyond a stretch but Agni (Fire Punch) and Seigi look very similar (even missing the same right eye). This also wouldn't be the first time Fujimoto put a reference from another of his works in (I.E. Nayuta coming from Yogen no Nayuta)

Oh shit. Yogen No Nayuta.
I LITERALLY JUST POSTED THIS LMAO THAT WAS MY FIRST THOUGHT TOO. i was kinda waiting for this to happen tbh especially since nayuta has been lifted straight out of her original one-shot. barem calling her a *witch* is a fascinating choice tbh. also the irony of denji now being chased as a chainsaw imitator..... peace is no longer possible, which was the whole point tbh. now at this point everyone will suspect one another of being a possible devil or devil contractor! chaos and horror and bloodshed! your neighbor could be a devil, so why don't you kill them first? and of course the devil hunting national exam..... sounds like a licence to kill indescriminately tbh especially now. private actors enlisted by the state to enforce violence and rule.
nayuta being designated as a main target also means that public safety can try to pressure denji into giving her up so that she is "safe" with them. i assume she'll no longer be able to go to school or have the normal life he desperately wanted her to have. he's been back into a corner just like barem AND public safety wanted it.
(also FASCINATING that barem flat out called her the former makima, which once again makes me wonder just how much nayuta knows or remembers about makima and her former incarnation... and considering denji is what she seems to care about most, and how much knowledge she has of the situation re the other horsemen..... i'm wondering what moves of her own she will be making. maybe she will grieve that possible life denji tried to give her; maybe she'll tell him she was only going through the motions to make him happy. we'll have to see)
sidenote but quanxi breaking her legs...... sick but also a brutal reminder that it's not just denji who views his body as a tool and will accept unimaginable pain as long as he can get the job done. the hybrids are absolutely key in all of this, both thematically (they *cannot die*, they are tools and objects for higher masters, they are struggling between loyalties and seem to have lost what matters most to them) and in terms of plot relevance. we didn't get reze this week either but i'm hoping she's still in the cards--it would be wild if she of all the hybrids doesn't return, especially considering her place in part 1.
