Bolachas Now Playing, a new music Spotify playlist updated every Tuesday.
Weâre back from Le Guess Who?, one of the few festivals in Europe where we could choose between four or five quality club nights in various venues or a packed Xylouris White gig post-midnight on a Saturday. We were lucky to get in and witness one of the best concerts of the festival, which doubled as a release show, since the duo composed of Greek singer/laouto player George Xylouris and Dirty Threeâs Jim White has just released their fourth album in six years, The Sisypheans. Plus: new tracks by Oiseaux-TempĂȘte, 10 000 Russos, Katie Gately, FKA twigs, SebastiAn, Moor Mother, Vanishing Twin, Gus Seyffert, Wolf Parade, Jeffrey Lewis, Jonathan Wilson, Itasca, Mount Eerie & Julie Doiron, The Delines, Twain, Sea Lion, and The Good Ones.
Bolachas Now Playing, 39/2019 (#209):

I have a list of ~900 albums from 2019 that I still want to eventually listen to / review [IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT ALERT]
For this project (already 125+ releases deep), which is just impossibly daunting and makes me head hurt. IDK how to streamline this process or is any âcriticâ out there really listening to âallâ the good music? Itâs impossible I guess... BUT needless to say, these have made this list from an even larger pool of music that I either listened to briefly and immediately dismissed or (gasp!) never even came across my radar (radar = many many music blogs I follow via RSS).Â
Anyway, because Iâll most likely never get to this (whatever this is, an Xgau parody or something)... Here is the list (please ignore some of my notations/typos):

Broken bodies all the time: Ian Mathersâ year in review
Since, letâs say, September, Iâve seen an increasing number of comments from people amazed at just how bloody long 2018 has been, pointing out that events that seem much further back (tide pods! an Olympics! that one political thing in the US, you know, the thing that feels like it was a decade ago!) actually happened this year. Iâm no more immune to that kind of horrified, exhilarated realization than any of my friends and loved ones, but I also have a personal one that I canât believe had fallen so far off my radar that I wasnât originally conscious of it when I was trying to sum up my year for Dusted.
This past January I went and had surgery to remove a âgrapefruit-sizedâ chondrosarcoma and a section of the three ribs on my left side where it had grown. Other than a noticeable lump in my chest thereâd been no other symptoms, one surgery (and about 6 weeks off of work, with pay thankfully) dealt with it cleanly, at least according to the follow-up scans Iâve had and will have twice-yearly until 2022 or so. If you have to get surgery-necessitating cancer, basically, mine was just about the best-case scenario you could hope for (especially here in Canada, where I didnât have to worry about bankruptcy as a result of medical costs). I donât want to, and havenât, made this entire essay about My Cancer Experience (in no small part both because I did have it relatively easy enough that I routinely feel guilty expecting any sort of accommodation for it, even when I was still very much knocked out by the surgery Iâd had, and because when everyone wants to know about it you quickly realize itâs kind of boring to talk about), but it does strike that itâd be almost disingenuous to talk about my experience of 2018 without mentioning it. I did allude to it in passing in my 2017 essay here (as well as my wifeâs diagnosis of a chronic autoimmune illness, something that honestly effects our day to day lives a lot more), but that was pre-surgery so I was too superstitious to give it a name in such a public forum. Now, when people who know me mention it, I almost have to remind myself that the scariest medical experience of my life to date happened not that long ago. Â
Iâve been thinking about it a bit more since reading on Bandcamp Daily that, while Low didnât really make this part of the narrative around Double Negative when it was being released, about eight months of that albumâs gestation happened after Alan Sparhawk had a ski injury involving broken ribs and punctured lungs, and that the recovery process was arduous and involved a lot of prolonged pain. And that got me thinking about context. There are positive and welcomed uses of context, of course; personally, to take a few examples from this year, I think both Leverage Modelsâ Whites and Zeal & Ardorâs Stranger Fruit are great albums that only gain from some of the context around their creations. But, crucially, it seems the creators involved agree with me, which is why that context is presented up-front in the material around those albums. Itâs different when itâs something that, while you might acknowledge its real effects (as Alan does above), you suspect people will blow out of proportion to make the only important fact surrounding what youâve made. It got me thinking about my own resistance to people - people who love and care about me! - ascribing aspects of my behaviour or actions to the cancer and/or the surgery (and it definitely did have some effects⊠to take a pretty surface-level one I listened to a lot more records in 2018 than I did in 2017, but didnât write quite as much). It got me thinking about David Bowie not wanting his last record to be received, at least initially, as his last record. Â
And while Alan doesnât make a big deal of it in that piece, I can see why he might want people to absorb the startling, abrasively gorgeous Double Negative (along with Whites, which I could describe in very similar terms, my favourite/most important record of 2018) on its own terms rather than our narrative-seeking minds possibly turning it into being just âaboutâ his injury (and, not incidentally, wiping out the contributions of the others who worked on the album). Those listeners who did find themselves responding to the record probably wouldnât be changed that much by the extra information, but goodness knows that every piece of art that gets released has to deal with some dumb, reductive takes, and how would it feel to have those responses taking on (and inflating the importance of) something so personal and literally painful? Â
2018 also potentially sees a bigger and less personal loss of context in the music/music criticism world, though. As much as I will maintain all day every day that the more consensus you get when it comes to things like records of the year the more boring you intrinsically have to get, I still felt an absence knowing that the Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics poll was going to vanish with the Voice itself. The interesting thing about every yearâs poll was almost never the top ten most acclaimed albums and singles (not necessarily a shot at the quality of that music, just that weâd all been talking about them all year; inevitably, they were all very known quantities), it was seeing what had placed in the lower reaches of the standings, digging around in the votes of friends and colleagues, tracing odd connections and seeing how your own lesser-known favourites were regarded, if at all, by the larger group. And even more than that, Iâd argue, what was fascinating and valuable about Pazz & Jop was the way it functioned as a kind of historical record, so that you could look back at a year from decades past and see, not what were the best or even longest-lasting records from that year but what the people who were engaged in listening to and thinking and writing about music thought was important and engaging. I say âpotentially,â though, because I had just enough time to realize I was mourning an institution Iâd kind of taken for granted (and to be fair, again, each yearâs findings at the top seem kind of ploddingly obvious at the time) when I got a new ballot. It looks like some sort of continuation is happening, although only time will tell if this is a genuine resurrection or a last gasp. Â
Either way, I havenât yet tried to narrow things down to lists of 10 (and given that thereâs still over 10 hours of music left in my playlist of 2018 releases I havenât gotten to yet), so here is 25 of the records Iâll be thinking about as I try to figure that ballot out, strictly in order of when I added them to my list, with links to the ones Iâve written about on Dusted. (I didnât have as much time to go over reissues as Iâd like, but probably my favourite was the gorgeous one of the overlooked late Bark Psychosis album ///Codename: Dustsucker, which I reviewed here.)Â

Le Guess Who? Festival reveals full 2019 lineup
New additions include the premiere of AEAEA (Patrick Higgins & Nicolas Jaar), Aldous Harding, Deerhoof & Tigue performing Friend Opportunity, Quelle Chris, a special collaboration between William Tyler and Mary Lattimore, and new project âHidden Musicsâ
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/155e380ee97d6ab51a937f0897feabc2/f4f35ce6ea574bf2-20/s540x810/b5b730854ebd3cb3cb40e782e7ee4fb415e7f54b.jpg)
Le Guess Who? has announced the full line-up for the 2019 edition, following the announcement of the curated programs by Fatoumata Diawara, Iris van Herpen & Salvador Breed, Jenny Hval, Moon Duo, Patrick Higgins, and The Bug. Le Guess Who?, taking place in Utrecht on November 7-10, is the Netherlandsâ most forward-thinking festival, dedicated to boundary-crossing and genre-defying music from all over the world. Take a look at some of the newly announced artists and the full lineup below... AEAEA AEAEA is the new duo from composers and performers Patrick Higgins and Nicolas Jaar. Utilizing instrumental performance and live digital resampling, the aim of the group is to develop immersive musical environmentsâsonorous desert islands that both react to, and redevelop against, the live compositions. Both Higgins and Jaar will be using computer processes to resample and reprocess each otherâs instruments in real time, unfolding a new vision of modern ritual music and electro-acoustic experimentation. Le Guess Who? is proud to present the premiere of this new project by two of todayâs most acclaimed musical visionaries and explorers. The name AEAEA derives from the mythical Greek island of Circe, where Homerâs Odysseus was trapped without time or history.  Hidden Musics In collaboration with producer Ian Brennan and Glitterbeat Records founder Chris Eckman, Le Guess Who? presents the first installment of a new program entitled Hidden Musics. The project aims to present global music traditions that normally donât reach our shores, often from more remote parts of the world. This is music that has been developed with little to no Western influence, but with a very rich, and often centuries-old, history.  Performing as part of Hidden Musics is the all-female Greek vocal ensemble Isokratisses, who uphold and reinterpret one of the worldâs oldest remaining folk music traditions, the polyphonic music of the Epirus regionâa force of celebration and hardship for centuries, passed down generation by generation; as well as Pakistanâs Ustad Saami, the last living khayĂĄl master, which is a precursor of the ancient, Islamic devotional music of qawwali; and Mexicoâs mystical La Bruja de Texcoco (The Witch of Texcoco), who reinvigorate the canon of Latin American folk by creating an astonishing tapestry of traditional Mexican music, baroque, and jazz. Final program additions Other final additions to Le Guess Who? 2019 include the arresting voice of New Zealand songwriter Aldous Harding; Not Waving & Dark Mark, a new collaboration between Italian electronic musician Alessio Natalizia and alt-rock minstrel Mark Lanegan; producer/lyricist/beatsmith Quelle Chris and his singular blend of punk rock, poetry, and experimental hip-hop; veteran avant-garde indie rock band Deerhoof performing their seminal album Friend Opportunity, joined by percussion trio Tigue; Ghanaian duo FOKN Bois, who highlight social and political issues with an infectious mix of satire, shocking sloganeering and performance art; Xylouris White, the alliance between Greek musician Georgios Xylouris and drummer Jim White (Dirty Three); Argentinaâs Los Siquicos Litoraleños, whose music is a unique triumph of homegrown rural psychedelia; Russian collective Shortparis, who obscures the boundaries between audiovisual theatre, techno raves and punk rock performance; and the streamlined proto-goth of Hollandâs The Sweet Release Of Death. Previously announced for Le Guess Who? 2019 Previously, Le Guess Who? revealed curated programs by the pioneering voice of Mali, Fatoumata Diawara; Dutch fashion radical Iris van Herpen & sound artist Salvador Breed; Norwegian multi-disciplinary artist Jenny Hval; psychedelic/kraut mystics Moon Duo; New York avant-garde composer Patrick Higgins; and shape-shifting electronic producer The Bug. Other artists performing at Le Guess Who? 2019 include Ethio-groove legend Ayalew Mesfin & Debo Band; award-winning jazz vocalist and space disco icon Asha Puthli; Atlanta art-punkers Deerhunter; Holly Herndon presenting her pioneering new album âPROTOâ live; Danish pop adventurers Efterklang; Nivhek, the new project of Grouperâs Liz Harris; Swedish prog/psych/counterculture trailblazers TrĂ€d, GrĂ€s och Stenar (TrĂ€den); juggernaut industrial/metal outfit Godflesh; and many more. The full program for Le Guess Who? 2019 can be found below. Tickets Tickets for Le Guess Who? 2019 are on sale now. Tickets for the Thursday program are âŹ43; tickets for Friday, Saturday and Sunday are âŹ48. 4-Day Festival Passes are available for âŹ148. All prices include service costs.  Le Guess Who? cooperates with The Dutch Council for Refugees for the âGrant an Entryâ initiative, which gives visitors the option to buy an additional day ticket for a refugee residing in The Netherlands who would like to visit Le Guess Who? but does not have the financial means to do so. More info via www.leguesswho.com. Xylouris White: nuovo disco il 19 gennaio
