Huawei’s Honor Play Gaming Phone - Better than POCO F1?

There’s plenty of buzz about Xiaomi’s new Pocophone F1 which I covered last week, but little do people know Huawei had already released the Honor Play - A Killer Gaming Phone using the 10nm Kirin 970, AI Cameras and a smaller notch than Poco F1! The Honor Play is available for $319 right now and myself and a few others beleive it’s as good if not better value than POCO F1. Let me tell you why.

First of all, the Honor Play was specifically launcehd as a Gaming Phone by Huawei and was the first to support the GPU TURBO Tech I covered in a special video here.

This Huawei beast is powered by their 10nm flagship Kirin 970 which is found in the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro! Thanks to the GPU Turbo tech Huawei built the Kriin 970 can take on Snapdragon 845 in PUBG and actaully deliver a better gaming experience and consume less battery.

Apart from the obviously powerful chip and GPU Turbo, the Honor Play boosts a large 3750mAh Battery and 18W Quick Charging. Naturally, gamers want the biggest screen possible and the Honor Play features a 6.3-inch 19:9 display with a smaller notch than the iPhone X and, yes POCO F1! Thinner side and bottom bezels is another big win for the Honor Play, as is the better sunlight visibility measured by my collegues from GSM Arena.

Another area where Honor Play beats the F1 is in storage speeds. All Huawei phones pack custom storage chips which deliver far better Random Read and Write speeds than any Xiaomi phone out there. Likely, the Honor Play’s storage performance even exceeds that of the Mi 8 and Mi MIx 2s. Updates are very important for the users and Honor Play has been geetting monthly updates so far and is confirmed to receive Android 9.0 Pie as part of the big EMUI 9 upgrade by the end of the year.

Another neat features is the inteligent Vibration feedback which provides what Huawei call 4D Gaming (not realy 4D though). 4D is enabled so far in PUBG and Asphalt 9 making your phone vibrate with the lenght and precision of key game moments, so you feel more immersed. Kinda like the latest Playstation controllers. All this is possible thanks to the NPU chip inside the Kirin 970, which also helps optimizing efficiency and performance in your daily tasks. EMUI is just better than MIUI with the Kirin 970. Huawei make really awesome use of their custom tech like the NPU and the i7 sensor chip inside to give keep the power down, performance up and invent new ways to enjoy games.

Regarding Honor Play’s cameras, Huawei did a dual camera on the front and back but it’s not as high-end as the POCO F1, due to the f/2.2 aperture lenses. While daytime shots will rival if not best the F1, low-light shots will come out better thanks to the f/1.9 aperture and 1.4 Pixel size of the IMX363 in the Pocophone.

While I cannot prove that Honor Play is better, and to some of you it won’t be, but it’s definitely a great value gaming phone with everything you need and boasts cool stuff like the GPU Turbo tech and a real AI NPU inside. The only real downside to the F1 is the slightly lower benchmark scores and inferior cameras.
