Repost from @africanstylediary
Her voice is so dreamy but you see that click sound—it is mind-blowing! 🤯
The legendary South African singer Miriam Makeba performs her interpretation of Qongqothwane, also known as ‘The Click Song’It’s a traditional wedding song of the Xhosa people of South Africa.
Xhosa is a tonal language best known for its click consonants. At the beginning of many performances, Makeba gave an intro in which she gave a little background on her native language and the song she was performing. Introducing her heritage to the rest of the world with every performance

Miriam Makeba’s portrait greets and grounds you near the entry of Africa Fashion.
Makeba’s emergence as a singer on the global stage coincided with the emergence of an independent African continent. Her songs blended popular musical styles like Jazz with indigenous South African melodies, often incorporating Swahili, Xhosa, and Sotho lyrics. Well-known globally for her songs Pata Pata and Qongqothwane (the Click Song) Makeba’s music and self-fashioning embodied African liberation and identity.
For many Africans, her music gave voice to the dawn of a new independent era and the liberation struggles that remained. Affectionately referred to as Mama Africa by her legions of fans, Makeba came to embody a forward-looking Pan-Africanism and Black Power.
See this portrait of Makeba and hear her singular voice as part of the African Cultural Renaissance that welcomes you in #AfricaFashionBkM.

Laduma Ngxokolo for MAXHOSA AFRICA
Fall/Winter 2015
Laduma Ngxokolo founded South African knitwear brand MAXHOSA AFRICA in 2012. Ngxokolo became interested in fashion design as a teenager when his mother, also a designer, bought a knitting machine for the home. Ngxokolo remarks this move ‘changed my direction in life forever’.
The two pieces here offer fine examples of the distinctive patterns that run through MAXHOSA, with the confidence of design and craftsmanship dominating the look, emphasizing the Xhosa aesthetic. The black and white shawl, which can be worn in a multitude of styles and shapes, is the first garment that Ngxokolo made to be worn by both men and women. The black and white colourway of the garment brings out the boldness of MAXHOSA design through its inherent focus on the Xhosa patterns, which are reminiscent of Xhosa beadwork. Here, the shawl is paired with red shorts, which was modeled at the 2015 Johannesburg Fashion Week.
