HAPPY RELEASE DAY ANNIVERSARY
Tumblr media
That’s no tribe it’s your fandom and they all love you all very very much! I for sure love the Xeno2 fam all the way to heck!
It has been one year since Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was released and I have officially logged over 400 hours into the game. I JUST got super back into it and spent all day yesterday playing it.
It is an AMAZING game and worth all of the investment you can imagine. The DLC was the gift that kept on giving and even now I have yet to hit up every possible thing I can do though I am getting close!
This game is just so great and fun with a great story, cast and world. It sucks you in and never lets go.
Thanks MonolithSoft for an incredible game! Here are some more Level 3 Blade Combo screenshots cause that is some awesome stuff!

THE SYMBOLISM OF COLOR IN XENOBLADE CHRONICLES 2
Tumblr media
There’s a lot to criticize about Xenoblade 2′s character design, but I actually found something positive that I wanna talk about. It took me four hours to write, and its definitely not as deep as I think it is, but... y’know... blood from a stone and all that.
(WARNING: END OF GAME SPOILERS)
Tumblr media
Whilst playing Xenoblade 2, I made a pretty cursory observation about the progression of Pyra's color scheme. As she changes through her 3 forms, the order of the colors matches the order of wavelengths in the visible light spectrum: red to yellow to green. I thought it could just be coincidental, but then I switched the dialogue to Japanese and learned Mythra's original name: Hikari (translation: light).
This was originally supposed to be a post to the Xenoblade subreddit. I thought I’d go “hey, isn’t that kinda neat” and get two upvotes and get on with my evening. But then, while trying to type it out, I made a realization, and then another, and then another, and then it was four hours later... and here we are.
Initially, the connections I kept making were pretty surface level. For example, each of Pyra's transformations also adds more white to her color scheme. White light, like the kind produced by the sun, contains all wavelengths within the visible spectrum at an equal intensity. Her third form's ability to change the elemental color of her specials could be a reference to this.
Kinda cool... not all that interesting.
The real revelation came when I decided to ponder the meaning behind the only color present in all three of her color schemes: Green.
Tumblr media
While green is most notably the defining color of her Pnuema form, its also present in both her original form and Mythra form as an accenting highlight. It's also the color of her Aegis core. I decided to come up with a concrete reason for why this hint of color is so pervasive.
I first thought the green could be symbolic of Elysium, the Japanese name of which, Rakuen, can be directly translated as 'Garden'. It could be said that, from her initial introduction, Pyra represents the promise of new life; an escape from the dying world of Alrest. Rex sees her as the personification of his people's salvation in a lush green paradise. I think, for the games first few chapters this symbolism is apt, but I think there’s something much more interesting about this color choice the further we dive into the story of Pyra’s origin.
Tumblr media
Take a second look at the green of Pyra's core crystal. It's not really a shade of green one usually associates with plants. This specific luminescent green is more aptly associated with something much more potent: radiation. We owe this association to the glow of radium, one of the most commonly occurring radioactive substances. In popular culture, radium green has become widely associated with all forms of nuclear research, specifically the harmful effects of exposure to radioactive materials. Ever see somebody in a cartoon get dumped in radioactive waste? What color do the glow? exactly.
Tumblr media
My point is this: I believe the use of green in Pyra's color scheme is meant to hint at her role as an ultimate weapon, not unlike an atomic bomb. Her genesis as a tool created by Klaus, an atomic researcher, lends a lot of credence to this.
Tumblr media
Within the world of Alrest, The Aegis is constantly referred to as a source of untold energy and potential, capable of both creation and destruction. Its power is sought after by individuals, terrorist groups, and sovereign nations alike. It doesn't take much of a leap of logic to make a connection to our own struggles with atomic energy and weaponry, and perhaps no culture better understands both the destructive power and the constructive benefit of nuclear energy than the Japanese. Not only is it the only country ever hit by an atomic strike, it is also the country with the third highest concentration of nuclear reactors. Culturally, this theming makes a lot of sense.
Tumblr media
Not convinced? Consider this: Malos' Aegis core color, dark purple, is the color of light produced by gamma radiation, the kind released during an atomic explosion. His self-declared role as a 'death-bringer' corroborates that symbolism. Fittingly, the translation of his Japanese name, 'Metsu', is 'destruction'. The purple of his core crystal represents the destructive potential given to him by his hubristic human creators. The black of his armor represents the cold death of space, the state of inertness he believes it is his duty to bring about. His final attack, a giant screen-filling fireball called Prometheus, may be an allusion to the Greek myth of the same name, where a mortal man is sentenced to eternal punishment for trespassing in the territory of the gods to bring the gift of fire to humanity. One could say that Malos is an embodiment of mankind's inevitable self-imposed extinction at the hands of its own creation.
That begs the question: if Malos' color scheme is meant to represent the destructive potential of nuclear energy, what is Pyra's color scheme meant to represent? What is she meant to embody? Life or death? Potential or Destruction? I think the answer lies somewhere in the middle.
Tumblr media
While it helped me to come to deeper realizations about the nature of this game's symbolism, I realize now that my initial theory about Pyra's forms representing different wavelengths of visible light was false. I find it much more telling to think of each of her forms as representing another level of heat energy: the warm red of fire, the blinding white and gold of sunlight, and the unearthly green glow of atomic radiation. Each of these energy sources, when harnessed by human innovation, is capable of incredible destruction...
... but this is not their only application.
Tumblr media
Just as we can use fire to destroy a home or heat it, or harness a nuclear reaction to either level a city or power it, the true potential of the aegis lies with the intentions of its wielder. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 posits that it is the duty of mankind to decide the true intentions of its creations. Rex's love for Pyra and forgiveness of Malos symbolize an ideal relationship between mankind and its own scientific potential. We alone shape the true nature of our innovations, and only righteousness and love, not only for each other but for the pursuit of innovation itself, can save us from destruction at our own hand.
Tumblr media
So yeah, there's a lot to learn by looking at colors... I'm also pretty aware that this the explicit moral of the narrative and that they try to make this point directly through dialogue more than once... Maybe if they had done a better job of saying all this stuff outright, I wouldn't have to figure it out by looking at costumes for 5 hours. Whatever, more on that in my full review... whenever that happens.

I originally beat Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on January 15th 2018 after about 110 - 120 hours of total playtime.
Now, May 3rd 2018 I have gone through the entire adventure once again in the Advanced New Game Plus mode and this game remains for the the best game of 2017 and the best game I’ve played since the original Xenoblade Chronicles. Nothing else even comes close to this incredible game.
320 hours of total playtime now and I’m only going to add to it as I challenge the last half of the superbosses and pick up all those quests I skipped while playing NG+
This game is PHENOMENAL
And I shall always take the time to giving Zeke a shout out for confirming the Rex and Pyra canon. Those dern kids are in love and after the end of this crazy adventure, they can be happy and at peace which is truly the best reward ever. Of all time.
