Pax’s eyes flutter open, xir consciousness floods in with a wave of rage crashing in behind it. “Get back!” Xe jumps up, hand flying to xir belt to unsheathe a sword, only to realize xe has none. “Where the hell am I?” The young druid whips xir head around the room, searching for their captors. Pax goes still when xe realizes nobody is there. Mind clearing ever so slightly,, xe scans the space around xim. Looking up, there is a seemingly endless white ceiling. Around him is what appears an austere, colorless yet shockingly shiny waiting room, as if xe was in some heavenly corporate office. Heaven, Pax thinks, what an odd word to pull out of my head when I have the feeling I was very recently living out my own hell. And a tsunami of memories falls over him, and war, and fire, and fighting, and screaming, and darkness, and pain, and that horrible stench of death—death. A sudden realization. Xe was burning. About forty seconds ago, xe was burning. Xe was dead But that wasn’t why Pax was furious. An image enters xir mind. A young woman stands in a disaster-filled scene, blade in front of her, eyes fierce and ready to die fighting to her lover. Three monstrous, shadowy figures close in on her, and she swings her blade. A disfigured limb falls to the floor. A second opponent lunges, and she turns, and there is a struggle, and fire crackles, and talons clash with elven steel, and there is pain—pain from the woman’s mind or the fire, Pax does not know which, for their link is too strong for xim to distinguish. “NO!” Xe shouts. Pain, the pain of struggling life, the pain of flaming death. A whisper, “No…” a breath, “my love…”

The memory fades, the panic does not. Pax fights the onslaught of tears gathering behind xir eyes. Xir breath is ragged, xir fists are tight. “Caraline.” Xe barely manages to exhale the word. Two emerald eyes see only a blind haze of lividity. A single tear trickles down a dirt-covered cheek. A guttural, animal cry echoes through a boundless purgatory.

A jaded voice laced with condescension and patronization echoes from all around. “Now, now, dear soul, no need to be so rude,” a bored sigh, “I don’t much like screaming.”

“Who the fuck are you,” xe half asks, half growls, “and what happened to Caraline?”

“How adorable, acting so dangerous. Why, I think you may know me already. I go by many names—life, death, creator of all, bringer of destruction, everything, nothing, savior, persecutor, peasant, god.”

“I’m dead.” A question, a statement.

“Why, of course! What else would you be, meeting god?”

“There are many gods, and many who speak to them.”

“Yes, but you don’t. Besides, I’m the one who decides who lives and who dies. I hold the power.”

“I don’t an eldritch horror’s shit who you are, what happened to Caraline?”

“Ta-ta-ta,” he scolds, “don’t get ahead of yourself. You aren’t in the afterlife just yet. You have a choice, my darling.”

“Of?”

“A fair trade, of course. Your life and another. Every soul gets to choose. You could die, dear, or take the place of another. You may come back to life, at the cost of one random living human or one with human ancestry.”

“I’ll do it. I have to save her.”

“So hasty! It could be anybody’s life, you know. Is it worth it? Another’s life for yours?”

“Not mine. For Cara’s.”

“Ah, yes, I forgot how irrational you mortals were. So driven by emotions, so controlled by that thing you call ‘love’.”

A floating scroll appears in front of Pax, its golden writing detailing a contract. A pearly quill pops into Pax’s hand. Without a second glance, Pax scratches xir signature onto the bottom. The scroll disappears, and in its place is goblet. In it are billions of orbs, each containing an image of a human or a person with the lineage of one. Agonizingly slowly, a single ball floats out, the picture with its back to Pax.

“I’ve always been fascinated human history, you know.” The voice drips with sliminess. A furious druid scowls at the goblet. “Did you know, a certain clan of elves has been known to include a human in their lineage every other generation? It strengthens their blood. What clan was it…let me think.” Pax stares at the orb. “Ah, yes—the T’sa’ay. Quite an interesting history.”

Pax’s face goes slack with shock and terror at their words and the image on the ball. Give them credit, the blow was perfectly timed.

The horrified face of one Caraline T’sa’ay, wishing for her life to just end, fighting only because she knew her deceased lover would want her to, is in front of the horrified face of one Pax Mors, wishing to go back to xir life being ended, having made a deal with xir soul only to save xir lover.

Pax had unwittingly done the complete opposite.

Percy and Sally are Puertorican-Brazilian, xe’s been trilingual since a child, though it took some time to separate the three, since they were spoken in tandem around the house when xe was little.

Before Gabe, the apartment complex they lived in had an old Mexican lady next door to them, who mostly spoke Spanish. Her name was Aitana, but Percy and Sally always called her abuela Aitana. Percy was quiet around her at first, but then she asked then about their hyperfixation at the time (poisonous plants), and they were off.

They lost contact with her after Sally married Gabe and they moved, but a little after Gabe ‘disappeared’ they went to try and find her at their old address. She was thankfully still there, hugged them both, and they caught up. Now she babysits Estelle and gets invited over for meals.

Sally’s dad was Brazilian, her mom Peurto Rican. Her dad had an older brother already in New York, who was the uncle that raised her. 

Percy loves rain and the ocean, and rainy days at the beach. Though sometimes the ocean loses its appeal since, yk, greek myths and stuff

status effects are like!! so there’s several kinds of mods, some of which are permanent, some of which only last a season, and some of which are like. have a chance to fade. Elsewhere is one of the ones that has a chance to fade, like each time the player that’s Elsewhere would normally have a turn there’s a chance that they’ll show back up. MaX got sent Elsewhere late in the season and we didn’t make it to the playoffs, so xe didn’t return before siesta and won’t have a chance to return until next season the Echo modification is permanent, but it only activates in Feedback and Reverb weather (w/ the Echo copying the modifications of the opponent team in Feedback and the mods of their team in Reverb) and when it activates it just like. I....I’ve been dealing with a lot lately? The stress of being nearly homeless, moving, living with Roxas, and having no less than three mental breakdowns in the last three days. But on TOP of that, I’m also... thinking a lot about my gender, introspective-wise? 

I only recently came to the conclusion that “hey, maybe I’m an nb woman” which felt right. But, I dunno, like when I came out as a “””””bi guy””””” I’m feeling it’s maybe a gateway to whatever my soul actually wants to get out of its system? 

I’m starting to wonder if IDing as a trans woman is just... a mean to an end for me. I’m dysphoric about my amab body, for sure, and I want to do away with it as quickly as possible. Having all the trappings of being on estrogen is nice, I like the boobs, and fat redistribution, softer skin, etc etc etc. But... I don’t... know if I’m a girl?

Which feels AWFUL to say. Not because of dysphoric reasons, but I guess... guilt? I’ve clawed my way here, fought tooth and nail, and so many other people have supported me coming out as a woman and it’s been so fucking inspiring, and to be like “Eh maybe I’m not” feels... so fucking disrespectful, to them, to my journey. And maybe it’s just my BPD, or my DID! I have shifting thoughts CONSTANTLY that rearrange my personality near completely, so it’s possible this is just one fo those episodes.

But I guess, even if it is.. is that valid? Is this something that’s worth putting mental and emotional energy into? 

And if I’m not a trans woman, what the hell am I? I’m sure as FUCK not a cis guy, the thought makes me sick to my stomach. But I’m not completely divorced from masculinity, I guess. I hate “he/him”, and “they/them” is starting to feel more ME than “she/her”. I mean maybe other pronouns too, but I don’t really....... know any other than “xe/xir” which are fun but I don’t know if I have any emotional attachment to them.

I always think to myself that if I had been born afab I’d still be trans. I don’t think, even with the body I strive for now, that I’d be happy with who I was. I don’t know if it’s self-deprecation, or the desire to be somewhere closer to the middle of the gender spectrum, or... I dunno what the hell it is. 

Um.. I dunno. I think it’d be transphobic to say “I want to be a nb trans guy who only uses they/them and she/her”? Especially being amab. That sounds...... really wrong and bad and stupid. I don’t know.. it all feels weird. Tomorrow I’ll wake up feeling completely different, I’m sure, but I just.. needed to get this out. 

I guess mostly I’m just glad “Echo” is such a gender neutral name. I love names that are barely names, mostly just words, so we can ascribe whatever meaning we want onto them. It’s malleable, like me.

(hark! a disclaimer: this features things that i experienced for the first time in 2017, not necessarily things that were released in 2017, because i live literally underneath a rock and it’s a bit out of step with the zeitgeist down here)

Books

Nominations: Neuromancer by William Gibson, The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin, The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

Winner: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. Neuromancer was good but this fic did it better. The Fifth Season was excellent and beautiful-- if you’ve read Jemisin’s previous trilogy about gods, there were aspects and elements from those stories that were really brought into perfect focus here; it’s a testament to her growth as a writer and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next two books in the series.

But The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet takes home the title because it is pretty much everything I want in a space opera. Everything. A galactic civilization that isn’t just an echo of European colonization. Interspecies conflict that isn’t a thinly-veiled allegory for racism. Aliens that are truly alien, different from humans and different from each other, with societies and cultures and values that logically follow from these differences. Lush worldbuilding (universebuilding?) that never sacrifices the plot or the characters. An artificial intelligence who sidesteps or directly refutes every frustrating AI trope in the book. Three-dimensional characters! Found family! ‘Xe’ being used as the linguistically-normal gender-neutral pronoun! A lesbian relationship between a human and a reptilian!

Movies

Nominations: Rogue One, Thor: Ragnarok, And Then There Were None

Winner: Thor: Ragnarok. Stop the fucking presses, I saw a movie less than a month after it was released. This has only happened, like... twice in the last decade. Literally.

Anyway. Rogue One was good, but I’m not a huge fan of the war stars universe. I’m even less a fan of the marvel cinematic universe, especially what it’s become since cap2, but Thor: Ragnarok just fucken blows everything out of the water. No contest. It’s hilarious, it’s epic, it’s the first movie to get Thor’s characterization right. It loses points for including B******t C*********h, but it gains more points for everything described in this post, especially the way it specifically called out the way that societies built on imperialism try to cover up or whitewash the shameful bloody parts of their history. (“Proud to HAVE it. Ashamed of how he GOT it!!”)

Video Games

Nominations: Space Pilgrim Saga, VA-11 Hall-A, Fallen London

Winner: Fallen London. Confession time: I played a lot of video james this year, kind of went wild at the steam summer sale, and it was really hard to narrow it down to three nominations. Ultimately, though, Space Pilgrim Saga was nominated for humor and space and an endgame relationship between a gray-ace woman and a bisexual woman. VA-11 Hall-A was nominated for design and good music and queer representation and me being super gay for Dana.

But Fallen London wins because I’ve never played something that so naturally and regularly validates my gender identity and queerness. Not only do you get to choose a nonbinary option when creating your character, you also get to choose how the game addresses you and change it whenever you want, however many times you want. It’s always there (being referred to as a ‘gentleperson’ or any one of several non-gendered titles) but it’s never the defining aspect of your character or the subject of scrutiny/ridicule/whatever by any NPCs. Similarly, every point at which a romance is ‘required’* provides you with a male and a female option (and, as far as I’ve seen, the option to romance them both at once, too) and your choice of these is never determined or impacted by your character’s gender. Despite the ‘historical’ setting.

*in scare quotes because it’s needed to advance some stories and unlock others, but you do have the option of just. not doing them. or seducing the character for money or social status or some other personal gain, and not love. i'd like it if there was a non-romance option to advance these storylines, but eh.

It’s also just really well-written and interesting and funny and free to play-- there are storylines that cost money, and I’ve got my eye on several, but you never have to spend anything to advance. Even just keeping to the free storylines, there’s a ridiculous variety of things to do for whatever sort of person you want to play as. Go sign up now! Beware of wells! Don’t go North!!

Nominations: Harrow County vol. 3 “Snake Doctor”, Bitch Planet vol. 2 “President Bitch”, Ms. Marvel arc “Mecca”

Winner: “Mecca”

Okay.

I don’t remember if I ever posted it anywhere, but when this arc was being released earlier this year I had a Debate(TM) with myself about escapist storytelling vs. storytelling that holds up a mirror during rough times--how can you write escapism when hiding from problems does nothing? how can you write realism when the world already does so much to grind us down?--and I eventually settled that we need both, to read and to be written. Realism to show us how to fight. Escapism to help us rest so we can get back up.

This arc is so real it hurts, especially when you can only read it in monthly installments, but it’s the same hurt as pressing on a sore muscle. It’s necessary. There’s not a single aspect of this story that isn’t directly related to what’s happened this year, and what will go on happening next year, and the difficulty of resisting it, and the importance of continuing to do so anyway.

Also G. Willow Wilson appears to be the only Marvel writer who remembers that hydra is literally a splinter group of fuckng nazis so like

Nominations: Archive 81, Wolf 359, The Magnus Archives

Winner: Archive 81. What can I say? It’s precisely my shit. In fact, it’s so much my shit that it’s kind of hard to believe I’ve only known about it for a few months. Time is fake? I’ve already written in depth about how much I like this podcast over here, so I’m not gonna repeat myself.

Has to be said though that The Magnus Archives was a very close second. Like, when I started writing this post a few weeks ago, I had most of the winners already chosen, but this one was a last-minute decision. Especially when episode 81 (*EXTREMELY LOUD TWILIGHT ZONE THEME SONG*) was released and marked the first time in my life I’ve ever related to a male main character. Maybe a main character, period? At some point I’ll post a list of sampler episodes you can listen to without being too spoiled for the main plot to see if you wanna invest in a thing that’s got 86 installments so far.

so there we go! that’s been a sample of my year’s experience in fiction. see you all on the other side of this arbitrary dividing line that’s only marginally related to physical reality!

a post about the wedding.

i think we’ve mentioned before, but it was when nika and ethan cofronted that we decided it had to happen. they’re both very excited, and very ready. for both of them, it will be a re-affirming of relationships that they’ve been steadily invested in over the course of this lifetime and the last. a natural follow-up to the events preceding it, and an excuse to celebrate something very important to them. i think that more than anyone else, it’s nika’s event. many other people in system feel more detached from it.

kayden and trysten both feel like... it’s something that they want to happen, and something they’re excited for, but it’s so far beyond their expectations that they don’t feel like they can claim it as “theirs”. i’ll be trying to convince them that it’s theirs as much as nika and ethan’s, but we’ll see if they’ll believe it.

cilla approves of the idea. i don’t think she makes much distinction between different members of gh0st’s system but she views them universally as an ally and a safe person.

azdien and jody are both like.. they haven’t talked about it until now that we’re asking, but now that we’ve asked they’re quite intense about it. jody says this was always a stretch goal in the Plan, but they weren’t sure it would be able to happen, that the timing would ever be right. azdien views it as a form of ownership over nerii, which vae’s excited about.

ailecent also seems to see it as an ownership thing, but not in quite as pleasant a way.

nitexx really wants to mc the reception and is kind of upset that ze can’t. ze’s pretty aro, so while ze doesn’t disapprove of it, ze doesn’t consider it anything to do with zir. 

also in the “not against it but not personally involved camp” are vyrn, tobias, yacinthe, jace, perien, haze, amelia, floret...

or like.. vyrn knows that xe’ll get along well with gh0st but feels weird about hanging around before ne knows xyr. tobias is somewhere between that boat and one full of anxiety. perien is like wistfully happy for us. haze thinks marriage as a concept is overrated. amelia and floret are only dating each other, and view events outside of our system as not their business.

remm has some really unpleasant things to say about all this but i didn’t fucking ask and i’m not about to.

nessie is also not personally involved but in her weird feud with joey, views this as a victory.

raliel is like, “this is a really weird human custom but i’m glad me and karkat are allowed to participate in it”

riley has some Complicated Feelings. si always assumed as a kid that if si ever got married it would be to iwaizumi, but now si’s about to get hitched with typha instead and si’s not against the idea but si is a bit worried that things are moving too fast.
