Bought some cool older Xbox 360 games also, cheap on eBay and stuff I’ve always wanted to play, I don’t think they’re all compatible with the series X but the website and info about that is way too much of a pain to try and find out it’s easier to just test myself, and if they don’t work all I need is a 360 controller and to hook up my old one to play em

Video game console and case design
Today's hyperfixation is on the PLAYSTATION 5. Because I want one, but I really shouldn't buy one, so I am just looking up everything to do with games consoles and burning my brain out.
I used to be a proper xbox player, until I got my PC, then I never really touched by xbox again. I got a PS4 to play Persona 5 and since then it's been a blu ray player for my Adventure Time boxset, not much else. But the current gen - PS5, Series X - is arguably more powerful than my gaming PC, and I still have a lot of friends stuck on PS5, so I am considering investing in a unit.
Anyway is it me or did they really shit the bed with design in this generation?
Tumblr media
Look at these chunky fuckers! They do not fit smoothly under your television at all. There is no detail or decoration breaking up their unnecessarily large faces, which makes them look bland and ugly. They look like they're made of cheap plastic, with the two controllers being the highest quality thing about them. I can attest the xbox controller is unbeatable, but playstation really made their shot this generation. A shame I can never get used to the dualshock joystick positioning.
The Series S and the PS5 Slim are almost NO improvement on the base designs.
Tumblr media
For some reason they made the Series S look like a speaker???
Tumblr media
The new PS5 slim FINALLY has a line across that massive faceplate, but the half matte half glossed finish is not doing it any favours. I think it would've looked much better if, for example, the matte and gloss plates were different colours. Like black and white! It also has an even MORE out of place disc drive, which I think is part of Sony's agenda to go digital only, and the two tiny "feet" for its horizontal positioning are pathetic! Personally I like this more than the original but not significantly, disappointing since I was really looking forward to it.
I want you to compare these nasties to the previous generation - the PS4 and the XBOX One.
Tumblr media
....Now, what's hilarious about this image is the consoles look ALMOST IDENTICAL from this angle. And, I guess, that would be why Sony and Microsoft decided to make such a departure with the space heater PS5 and the fridge Series X.
But they both look very premium and advanced, and they fit very nicely in your living room.
The companies tried to look a bit more distinguished in their followup versions in the previous gen too. The white PS4 Pro looks a lot closer to PS5 with its quirkiness, but without the atrocious shiny plastic. Sony tended to add or remove a layer whenever they altered the PS4, I wonder what they would look like all stacked on top of each other.
Tumblr media
It's not just the games console designs that suffer - Look at the game cases! I know that the companies want to incentivise you to go digital, but Xbox Series X cases are just awful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So if you're confused - You should be!!! Microsoft have two kinds of case for the Series X. One of them is the EXACT SAME CASE as Xbox One, but with Series X printed on the front. The second newer version foregoes the sexy Xbox logo entirely and just has Xbox Series X printed in some default font. Awful awful awful.
Playstation is doing better, but barely.
Tumblr media
They are reusing PS4 cases with a different print on them. It doesn't look as horrible as Xbox's, and it at least has a different colour on the logo, but damn, the jump between PS3/360 and PS4/One was really impressive, and now they've stopped bothering because they want everyone to go digital. If your game cases look like shit, why bother with physical?
I want to contrast with physical media kings Nintendo, who did an outstanding job in 2017 with designing the case for the Nintendo Switch.
Tumblr media
These bad boys are mine. They're super thin, easy to stack, decent quality, and F U N. The red colour pallette makes them pop out. You can see one from across the store and go, "damn, that's a Nintendo Switch game".
Tumblr media
I just want a thousand of them.
I would say a disadvantage, especially compared to the Gamecube games next to them, and even compared to 3ds, is that you can't tell what game you're looking at without going right up to them. These cases are TOO uniform, and really tiny, so i have to triple check I am picking up Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and not Tony Hawk Pro Skater. Meanwhile you can tell exactly what Gamecube games I have by colour pallette alone. Like, you can instantly tell that's Windwaker.
Tumblr media
The switch in general is a very fun looking games console, much nicer looking than its predecessor the Wii U, though I'm not sure how I feel about the white of the OLED. But every time I see a Switch Lite in stores, even though I know it's worse than my Switch, I want to buy one. It just looks so FUUUUUN.
Tumblr media
And finally a special mention to the 3DS and its games case. The console itself was pretty stylish, if... rudimentary for its release period, but the games cases are high quality and almost make me want to have 3ds games just so I can have the cases.

It's game over for 2023. Time to talk about the best games I played during the year. I finished many enjoyable titles on various platforms, crossing genres and time to visit even decades old games. I finished a total of 38 games this past year. And because I apparently didn't have enough choice for devices to play all these games on, we got an Xbox Series X to our household on Christmas week.
Anyhow, here are the winners of my personal Game of the Year 2023 awards. *drumroll*
1st place: Vampire Survivors (PC)
My addictive substance of choice. Doesn't shine in the graphics department with modern tech. Doesn't try to impress with thought-provoking narrative. The incredibly simple yet satisfying gameplay however is engineered to perfection. A true masterclass of game design.
+ Infectiously fun, action-filled reverse bullet hell roguelike gameplay. Just one more run! + Bold artistic identity. + Humorous touch in character/enemy design and fun nods to other videogames. + Superb soundtrack. + Tons of quality content for an incredibly cheap price. Free updates and paid DLC with even more content. - The flashing effects can go a little overboard and cause discomfort. - Later stages of game can lag even decently powerful hardware.
See my posts about Vampire Survivors
2nd place: Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (Wii U Virtual Console, originally on Game Boy Advance)
A classic Castlevania that holds up nicely even 20 years from release and on a big screen. With a bit more memorable music and a small quality of life improvement, Aria of Sorrow would have earned the coveted 5/5 stars in my book.
+ Balanced and fun gameplay with a good sense of progression. + Top tier level design with a concise map. + Nice art style in environments, sprites and character portraits. Great animation and enemy design. + Fitting music and audio. + Good story. - Lacks item to warp to last save room or outside castle.
See my posts about Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
3rd place: Touhou Mystia's Izakaya (PC)
Chill vibes managing your restaurant, gathering ingredients and talking to characters by day turn into frantic cooking and serving action by night. This game got its recipe right.
+ Fun, rewarding gameplay loop mixing leisurely action and challenges testing your attention. + Enjoyable story with funny events. + Wonderfully cute pixel art. + Catchy music. + Lots of content for a low price. - Starts slow, even a bit boring in the beginning before you get special customers and unlock more recipes. - Final battle had annoying RNG. - English translation could use a little polish.
See my posts about Touhou Mystia's Izakaya
Honorable mention: Crimson Shroud (Nintendo 3DS)
This surprisingly challenging table-top RPG inspired game impressed me with its quality and satisfying gameplay. This is a hidden gem worth visiting.
+ Challenging gameplay with long and brutal battles make for a rewarding experience. + Good, well-written story with two endings. + Cool art direction with 3D models mimicking table-top RPG figurines, pretty illustrations. + Great music. + Game's length is just right to keep player invested. - Overall difficulty is higher than usual for JRPGs and Game Over wasn't a rare occurrence on my playthroughs. Slight frustration ensued due to having to retry the long battle from the beginning. - Confusing equipment UI (comparison of current vs new gear).
See my posts about Crimson Shroud
Honorable mention: Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (Nintendo DS, played on 3DS)
Unique experience with tricky chain reaction puzzles and fantastic characters. Prominently fluid and amazing animations - I can't believe it's a Nintendo DS game! This is no trick - it's a treat.
+ Inventive gameplay and mechanics, perfect fit for touch screen. + Interesting story that definitely doesn't forget humor despite the grim subject. + Memorable characters (Cabanela and Missile were my favorites). + Awesome art style and marvelous animation quality. + Great music throughout the game. - I almost lost interest at some point and got impatient to finish the game. - I guessed one of the key plot twists but luckily that didn't put a dent on the ending.
See my posts about Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
Honorable mention: Gears of War 2 (Xbox 360, played on Xbox Series X)
Entertaining cover shooter with varying missions. The game never had a boring moment and the length of the single player campaign was just right. I'm looking forward to playing Gears of War 3 next!
+ Fun gameplay that sets expectations for other shooters. + Interesting setting and story with some cool events. + Fun dialogue that made me chuckle many times. + Good music and great English voice acting. + The challenge on Normal difficulty was just right for me. - AI controlled companions got stuck occasionally, leaving you alone in dangerous enemy territory. - I didn't always understand the mission objectives in the hectic situations. - Cutscenes can't be skipped (thankfully this is not a Kojima game).
Honorable mention: Signalis (PC)
Atmospheric sci-fi survival horror paying homage to older games. Puzzles are different from usual and require attentive skill and logical thinking to solve. This game deserves a sequel.
+ Intriquing sci-fi story with an impactful ending (there are multiple endings too). + Great art direction, appealing PS1 era inspired retro graphics with skillfully crafted pixel art. I very much enjoyed the nod to Ghost in the Shell. + Unique, well-designed puzzles and good level design. + Great atmosphere. - A bit clunky combat. - Tiny inventory space forced me to backtrack more than I would have liked. - Annoying design choice to not include a map in a couple of areas.
See my posts about Signalis
Nominees for my personal Game of the Year 2023
Only games I have finished in 2023 have been included (looks like I played a lot of games starting with the letter T).
An Arcade Full of Cats (PC) Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (3DS) Assassin's Creed: Revelations (PS3) Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea DX (Switch) Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (Wii U Virtual Console - GBA) Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (3DS) Crimson Shroud (3DS) Detective Pikachu Returns (Switch) Dordogne (PC) Fitness Boxing (Switch) Gears of War 2 (Xbox Series X - Xbox 360) Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (3DS) Immortality (PC) Kuru Kuru Kururin (Wii U Virtual Console - GBA) Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk (PC) Liberation Maiden (3DS) Need for Speed: Most Wanted U (Wii U) Piofiore: Fated Memories (Switch) Pokémon Art Academy (3DS) Pokémon Rumble World (3DS) Scorn (PC) Shadows Over Loathing (PC) Signalis (PC) Sticky Business (PC) Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Switch) Tekken 7 - Definitive Edition (PC) Toem (PC) Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction (PC) Touhou Mystia's Izakaya (PC) Toukiden 2 (PS Vita) Trinity Trigger (Switch) Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion (PC) Umurangi Generation Special Edition (PC) Unpacking (PC) Vampire Survivors (PC) Volcano Princess (PC) We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie (PC) Ys: The Oath in Felghana (PC)
Wishing you all a fabulous New Year 2024 with happiness, health, success and cool gaming experiences!

I’m not a complicated girl.
A bit of cheap nostalgia is more than enough to get my attention, and cheap nostalgia is what Mythforce promised as it encroached upon my radar. The problem is, I want cheap, not the bottom of the bargain bin, and when it comes to nostalgic trappings, I need something a little more heartfelt than paper thin aesthetics.
Mythforce presents itself as a roguelite action game steeped in the flavoring of 80s Saturday morning cartoons. Within seconds of playing, it exposes itself as a clumsy half-baked mess for which the cultural research couldn’t have extended beyond watching half an episode of Masters of the Universe.

ATLAS FALLEN - REVIEW ROUNDUP!
This action-RPG developed by Deck13 Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment has had a few days out on the dunes and is now ready for its review roundup! The result? Rising from the dust is not an absolute MUST, but it is a somewhat fun kind of sand-glide ride!
IGN - 7/10
"Atlas Fallen is a solid open-world action RPG with plenty of platforming and large monsters to fight. Putting aside its weak story and the console versions’ gritty graphics there’s a hidden gem of excellent combat, robust exploration, and surprisingly deep customization to uncover in the sinking sands of its arid wilderness."
Eurogamer - 3/5
"Mindless, pointless, and mind-numbing are all probably descriptors that sound too harsh for Atlas Fallen because, again, it's mainly good old simple fun. Sure, it takes itself way too seriously and the loot chase can get monotonous, but everything outside of the monster-slaying is just an excuse to get right back to the monster-slaying. Or make the monster-slaying cooler with upgrades."
HardcoreGamer - 3.5/5
"Atlas Fallen is far from a perfect game, but the important thing is that it’s still a fun game. Even when it can feel like it’s throwing a kitchen sink at you, there’s always something enjoyable to find in Atlas Fallen, mainly its impressive combat that leads to a lot of challenging, enjoyable battles (albeit with a few that could use tweaking), and its visually striking landscapes that allow for a ton of fun sand sliding."
Destructoid - 7/10
"I do think there is reason enough to experience Atlas Fallen. Especially if you are a fan of the action RPG genre. It may not leave a lasting impression once you’ve completed the adventure. But it will be enjoyable enough along the way to hold your interest."
GamesRadar - 2.5/5
"This is Atlas Fallen in a nutshell, though. It isn't a disaster. It's proficient in some respects, adequate in others, and manageable at worst. But that leaves a creative void in its world and the way you interact with it that calls into question the value of the whole endeavour."
PushSquare - 7/10
"Atlas Fallen is a valiant effort from Deck13 Interactive that will go down as its best game so far. With fantastic traversal and a fun, engaging combat system, the developer has nailed the gameplay in every sense. What holds the experience back, though, is a lack of polish to iron out the technical issues and potentially long load times."
PlayStationUniverse - 7.5/10
"Atlas Fallen suffers a few mishaps along the way, with enemies able to do cheap shots, modernized fast travel limitations, and a rather empty map. At the same time, there's a fun story here that keeps you moving forward, and combat itself feels visceral without being over-demanding. This is a great entry point for newcomers to the genre."
When all's said and done, if you're looking for a solid game to fill your time between now and the next big release then these review scores mostly suggest Atlas Fallen is your bet!

Help me decide on which console to buy (please)
Help me decide on which console to buy (please) Hi Everyone,My wife and I are looking to purchase a new consoleBut here's the problem...We currently have a PS4 and we realized that out of the 80+ games in our libraryWe genuinely play about 5 of them now...And we honestly only enjoyed maybe 15 of the 80Both of us feel the selection and quality of games was WAY better back on the PS2 than with the PS4. So, now we're trying to find a console that has a good selection of good games that we'll enjoy. We can't justify spending a potential $500 on a new console (plus games) if we're not going to enjoy it long term anyway. So, should we get:The PS5.The Xbox Series X or S.A Nintendo Switch.Or should we just buy an Xbox 360/PS3/Nintendo Wii/Nintendo Wii U and buy a ton of games with it because those games are really cheap now days (well, most of them anyway). Is there a particular console that you personally favor based on its selection of games? Edit: Me, my wife and our children will use the new console, so if there's some kid friendly games or games that are fun to play as a family, that's definitely a bonus! Edit edit:For context:My favorite games: Metal Gear Solid.Splinter Cell.Horizon Zero Dawn.XCOM 2.Fallout 4.My wife's favorite games:Heavy Rain.South Park and the stick of truth.Fall Guys. The Sims 4.Our children's favorite games: Fall Guys.Minecraft.Portal Knights.Hello Neighbor.Five Nights At Freddy's. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge’s Dimension Shellshock DLC Review (Xbox Series S)
Tumblr media
For our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge’s Dimension Shellshock DLC Review, we discover Chaos! The Neutrinos crash the Turtles’ latest pizza party! The teenagers from Dimension X are in dire need of help: Shredder is seeking to conquer the multiverse itself! Our heroes need to jump between dimensions and stop Shredder once and for all!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge’s Dimension Shellshock DLC Review Pros:
- Same beautiful pixel art graphics. - Adds new game type - survival mode. - In survival mode, you collect shards and crystals to fight the boss of the void. - Unlock all-new power-ups and color palettes for characters. - The Survival mode is a rip into the Multiverses so anything or anyone can appear. - Each character has their own list of unlockable power-ups and palettes, you can see a preview of them. - Two new playable characters - Karai and Usagi. - Online leaderboards for survival mode showing name, rank, score, and how many dimensions cleared. - Survival mode supports six players both online and offline. - All characters start at level 0 in the survival mode. - The new characters really add another layer and are great additions. - With the DLC a patch dropped for free adding a handful of new palettes for each character including the Gameboy skin. - All new cutscenes and story elements. - The fights take place anywhere including all-new comic book-style backdrops complete with animations and environmental hazards. - At the end of a wave in Survival, you pick one of two items/power-ups that can be good or bad, This also acts like a fork in the road pick your route mechanic. - Shards drop from enemies randomly. - The combo system is still in play. - Survival mode is on iron-man mode levels of difficulty with you having one life and you have to beat a dimension to keep collected shards. - At times you can play as characters not actually playable in the game, Shredder for example. - Every dimension is basically a different period of time during the turtle's universe, they can have the same backdrop over and over but different characters in the background or use day and night. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge’s Dimension Shellshock DLC Review Cons: - No additional achievements. - You never really know what item you are picking during the end of Wave selection. - Can be hard to make out environmental hazards in the new comic book-style backdrops. - Being Wave-based opens up a lot more cheap offscreen attacks from enemies. - The Survival mode is a very harsh one, you get one life and only keep collected shards if you beat a dimension. - Just gets frustrating when you put in time and at any point you lose everything. - At times I've had very few drops happen making it a bad run and a waste of time. - Survival mode offers no difficulty options. Time and time again I see a game I’m interested in available on Xbox Game Pass and when I try to download it, my console says it’s running out of space and I’ll need to make room by deleting games I’ve already installed. What makes things easier, and cheaper, is plugging in the WD Black C50 Expansion Card, starting at 512GB for…
