please indulge me for a moment:
in sports dates world there would definitely be heated debates over who the greatest football couples of all time are. on a footballing level and power couple level.
on the footballing side people would argue that it’s about how strong the two players were together how did they elevate the team/country while others would value how they elevated each other’s play more. The synergy the two had. Basically pound-for-pound who were the strongest vs the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
To illustrate this let’s take two well known football couples in this universe: Kane & Son and Reus & Gotze.
Kane & Son: this one is easy. Kane is very good. Son is very good. Together they are very very good. Club or country together or apart they can deliver. Definitely one of football’s more recent power couples. That’s not even going into the brand power. Voted Football’s Most Marketable Couple for four years in a row now by a panel of industry experts. Currently there’s a bill on the floor of the South Korean National Assembly that would make July 18th national KaneSon day. Support is picking up steam!
Reus & Gotze: at dortmund they were unstoppable. And such a lovely couple too. But apart they never seemed to reach the highs they had together. But fans would say that isn’t the point. They argue it’s what the couple does *together* for each other how they mesh synergize etc that matters. What it means to be footballing *couple*. A bit like the peak vs longevity argument in actual football (lol).
Obviously Xavi and Iniesta are undisputedly number one on any list. They are the crowning achievement in Barcelona’s long and storied history of football couples: Cruyff and Neeskens, Figo and Guardiola (also one of football’s most dramatic divorces), Xavi and Iniesta… Some might argue it’s a part of Barca’s footballing philosophy, ingrained in their DNA as much as tiki-taka or free flowing football is La Masia? More like La Marriage Registry! (Real Madrid, not so much. If there were any couples they happened in spite of Florentino Perez.)
There are experts on football couples. Possible relationship synergy is Definitely a factor in transfer strategies. Not the main one, since modern football tactics have devalued pure partnerships but. It’s still considered. There’s an algorithm that shows a likelihood of love between two players. Highly important for CB duos, Midfields, etc. xK (expected kisses) and all that.
Which makes the Joaos a mystery! The algorithms had them at a whopping 15.1%. Yet somehow here they are… there are conspiracy theories but only on the most madridista of forums.
#none of this is relevant but it’s fun to write#sometimes u just have to write whatever#joao squared

Spain Beat England To Win Euro 2024 Final With Late Oyarzabal Goal
Substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scored a dramatic late winner as Spain triumphed in Sunday's Euro 2024 final, beating England 2-1 to confirm their re-emergence as a force on the international stage and end their opponents' dreams of winning a first title in almost six decades.
Spain lost influential midfielder Rodri to injury at half-time, but shrugged that off to take the lead within two minutes of the restart through Nico Williams, who was set up by his fellow star winger, Lamine Yamal.
England came from behind as they have done so often at this Euros, as substitute Cole Palmer drove in the equaliser on 73 minutes, moments after entering the fray.
But their resurgence in the game was cut short as Oyarzabal, the Real Sociedad forward, turned in a cross in the 86th minute to hand Spain a record fourth European Championship crown, and a third in the last five editions.
They previously won in 1964, 2008 and 2012, the last two titles coming either side of their triumph at the 2010 World Cup during the golden era of Xavi Hernandez, Xabi Alonso and Andres Iniesta.
Whether this generation, led by the brilliant Yamal who was playing here a day after his 17th birthday, manage to repeat the achievements of that magnificent side remains to be seen, but theirs was a fitting victory.
Spain have been comfortably the best team over the last month in Germany and were not intimidated by the atmosphere at the Olympiastadion, where the majority of the crowd were given over to England's cause.
England had hoped to finally claim a first men's international title since their fabled victory at the 1966 World Cup, but fell just short in their first ever final on foreign soil.
After the agony of their defeat on penalties to Italy three years ago, they are the first side ever to lose back-to-back Euros finals.
Captain Harry Kane, meanwhile, is left at the age of 30 still looking for the first trophy of a career so rich in goals, this defeat coming after a season in which he also won nothing with Bayern Munich.
It was always likely that Spain would control this game, and England spent most of the first half chasing the ball.
Spain controlled the game from the off, but it took until stoppage time at the end of the first half for either team to manage a shot on target, with Phil Foden's effort from a Declan Rice free-kick delivery being easily saved by goalkeeper Unai Simon.
But it was just before that in which Rodri hurt himself, sliding into teammate Aymeric Laporte on the follow-through as he blocked a Kane shot.
Spain's outstanding holding midfielder was unable to continue, and made way for Martin Zubimendi at the restart.
It felt like the loss of such a presence in the middle of the park could completely throw Spain off course, and yet they wasted no time in opening the scoring.
England were braced for the danger to come from Spain's two wingers, and it was they who combined for the goal, as Yamal collected a Dani Carvajal pass and darted inside.
He released a pass for Williams, who scored with a controlled, low first-time shot across Jordan Pickford and into the far corner.
England would now need to come from behind, but then again that was exactly what they had done in each of their three previous knockout games.
Southgate took off his talisman Kane on the hour mark and sent on Ollie Watkins, a repeat of the substitution that won the semi-final against the Netherlands.
Spain had chances to increase their lead and their fans began to greet every successful pass with an 'ole', as Southgate tried to turn the tide by sending on Palmer for Kobbie Mainoo.

Within three minutes England were level as Bukayo Saka’s ball in from the right was laid off by Jude Bellingham for Palmer, who found the net from range with a low first-time effort into the corner.
However, Spain grabbed the winner with four minutes to go thanks to their own super-sub.
Oyarzabal played the ball out to Marc Cucurella on the left before racing into the middle to turn his teammate’s low cross into the net, staying just onside in the process.
Spain then held on, although only after a vital clearance off the line from Dani Olmo to deny Marc Guehi at the death.

Spain Clinches Euro 2024 Title with Last-Minute 2-1 Victory Over England
Substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scored a dramatic late winner as Spain triumphed in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday, beating England 2–1 to re-establish themselves as a powerhouse on the international stage, ending England’s dream of securing their first title in nearly six decades.
England, as they had done throughout the tournament, came from behind when substitute Cole Palmer scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute, shortly after entering the game.
However, England’s resurgence was halted when Oyarzabal, the Real Sociedad forward, converted a cross in the 86th minute, securing Spain’s fourth European Championship and their third in the last five editions. Spain had previously won in 1964, 2008, and 2012, with the latter two titles bookending their 2010 World Cup victory during the golden era of Xavi Hernandez, Xabi Alonso, and Andres Iniesta.
While it remains to be seen if this generation, led by the brilliant Yamal who played just a day after his 17th birthday, can replicate the achievements of their predecessors, their victory was well-deserved.
Spain was the standout team throughout the tournament in Germany and remained unfazed by the predominantly pro-England crowd at the Olympiastadion.
England had hoped to secure their first men’s international title since their historic 1966 World Cup win but fell just short in their first-ever final on foreign soil. Following their penalty shootout defeat to Italy three years ago, they became the first team to lose back-to-back Euros finals.
Spain Overcome Rodri Injury
Spain dominated the game from the start, with England spending most of the first half chasing the ball. Neither team managed a shot on target until stoppage time at the end of the first half when Phil Foden’s effort from a Declan Rice free-kick was easily saved by goalkeeper Unai Simon.
Rodri’s injury occurred just before this, as he collided with teammate Aymeric Laporte while blocking a Kane shot. Spain’s standout holding midfielder was replaced by Martin Zubimendi at the restart.
Despite the potential disruption from Rodri’s absence, Spain quickly opened the scoring. Yamal, collecting a Dani Carvajal pass, darted inside and set up Williams, who scored with a low first-time shot across Jordan Pickford into the far corner.
England, needing to come from behind as they had in their previous knockout games, saw Southgate substitute Kane for Ollie Watkins, replicating the semi-final strategy against the Netherlands. Spain had opportunities to extend their lead, prompting their fans to chant ‘ole’ with each successful pass.
Southgate introduced Palmer for Kobbie Mainoo in an attempt to shift the momentum. Within three minutes, England equalized when Bukayo Saka’s cross was laid off by Jude Bellingham for Palmer, who scored with a low first-time shot.
Spain’s winner came four minutes from time, thanks to their super-sub Oyarzabal. He passed to Marc Cucurella on the left before racing into the middle to convert his teammate’s low cross, staying just onside.

Engeland tweede finalist. Nederland - Engeland 1-2

England besiegt Niederlande in dramatischem Halbfinal-Krimi
Minute früh in Führung brachte.

Ollie Watkins' Dramatic Goal Secures England's Spot in the Final
As tensions soared at the BVB Stadion, the unexpected hero of the night emerged from the bench. Ollie Watkins, with a brilliant strike, secured England's first final on foreign soil, highlighting Gareth Southgate’s masterful substitutions. In a thrilling match, England faced an early setback when Xavi Simons scored a stunning goal for the Netherlands. England’s response came through Harry Kane’s penalty, but they struggled to maintain momentum in the second half. When Southgate replaced Kane with Watkins, no one foresaw the game-changing impact. This goal, coupled with a strong defense, sent England to the final. The game started under dramatic conditions, with a torrential downpour failing to dampen the spirits. The Dutch fans turned the famous Yellow Wall into a sea of orange, setting the stage for an intense match. England's structural issues were apparent early on. Marc Guéhi’s headed clearance led to Declan Rice losing possession to Simons, who advanced and struck a powerful shot past Jordan Pickford. England, now behind for the third consecutive game, maintained composure with Kieran Trippier urging calmness. England, arranged in a 3-4-2-1 formation, showed promise with Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka leading the charge. Kane, looking rejuvenated, tested Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. Saka’s persistent efforts led to a foul by Denzel Dumfries on Kane, resulting in a penalty. Kane confidently scored, leveling the match. As the game progressed, England pushed forward, with Trippier and Kyle Walker supporting the attack. Phil Foden nearly scored from long range, while Dumfries cleared another attempt off the line. The Netherlands’ defense wavered under pressure. Southgate’s tactical changes, including introducing Luke Shaw for better balance, initially seemed to lack urgency. The Dutch, compact in defense, made it difficult for England to find space. Pickford made crucial saves, keeping England in the game. England's energy waned as the match neared its conclusion. Southgate responded by bringing on Palmer and Watkins. The Netherlands continued to press, with Cody Gakpo posing a threat. Yet, England’s defense, led by Guéhi, stood firm. The breakthrough came as the match approached the 90th minute. Palmer’s precise pass found Watkins, who turned and scored, sealing England’s victory. The team now heads to Berlin to face Spain in the final, carrying a spirit of resilience and determination. This victory, marked by Watkins' heroics, adds to England’s series of defiant performances, including Bellingham’s spectacular goal against Slovakia and the penalty triumph over Switzerland. England's journey to the final is a testament to their depth and resilience. Read the full article
