ok so im reading through Almost Nowhere and i have Complaints about it's structure and wanted to vent but also not to the point of actually commenting on the thing itself. (its a Well-made story. this all comes from a place of admiration/love for the thing so i didnt want to put it in a public tag)
So after seeing you reblog the ending announcement i started reading it. current spot is chapter xxi, or sylvie vs hector's forces. (is sylvie just a jadesprite expy. is hector just a Dirk/Dave. is that what is going on. ugh it figures. anyway.)
pros: premise fills that timeline bullshit appetite, and has some fascinating evolutions of its timeline and the puzzle therein. the actual setup and climax of the Annes escape story was very exciting, and the notebooks are a fascinating conceit. and the entire story could be summarized as "hey aliens put everyone in mini The Matrix realities and people gotta figure out how to deal with that/escape?" which is a pretty good premise. the Annes were my favorite part.
cons:
due to being about timeline bullshit and specifically miscommunication causing disaster, it also is incredibly hard to parse even when it's trying to be clear. i get the multiple narrator conceit, and i get that Azad is glued to a thesaurus, but it feels like its getting in it's own way way more often than not. Its doing the "im using the more complicated word to sound smart rather than be accurate or communicate my message" thing, and its hard to parse how much of that is purposeful. I found it exhausting after a few hundred pages.
as time loops are a core aspect of the story, most of the characters feel like they have very little actual impact or agency on the plot. they're protagonists as designated, but grant and cordelia do very little of note- where i am now Grant's basically just a guy to get explained at and he got addicted to a sub-reality game for a while. he is important because sylvie is his dog, but beyond pining for Azad and getting things explained to him, Grant doesnt feel like he Does anything
however Grant is still my favorite character because he's the only one who actually says "what the fuck are you talking about, explain it better" which the entire text desperately needs.
its gotten to the point that the text's own coy obfuscation of itself has made me disconnect from caring about the characters- and that's Poisonous.
the story makes its Stakes either too big or too small. its either about a characters self doubts or its about finding a way to escape a reality by killing it's god. but theres very little in-between, or focuses on how one relates to the other. its hard to care when the stakes are too high (unrelateable), and its hard to care when theyre too low for too long (character feels whiny and passive).
its best done in the Annes story- her personal turmoil over her incredibly bizarre circumstances leading to resentment and action- killing her father-god- were united and flowed into each other. usually an escalation of stakes is accompanied by development of character. but beyond the Annes, i feel like there are no characters who have developed. theres no proactivity that feels like itll actually change things. its just characters that have been acted upon (not-entertaining). (and i get that time loop bullshit makes that point hard but its also sapping the enjoyment of reading the overall story itself and needs to be addressed.)
at this point i feel like the plot has become concerned with it's own telling, which is arguably what's actually happening- everything is being written because timeloop bullshit demands it and everyone caught inside is powerless to struggle against it, including the audience- but im not finding it entertaining anymore. I want to care about the characters more, but the text is reinforcing it's own disassociation-themes to the point where its getting unfun to read.
to be fair- i did read up to where i am over the course of two days, which is a Lot to take in at once. even on release this wasnt a story thats binge-friendly and im probably bouncing off of it's weirdness because i havent had time to digest it. However it's fascinating in its setups- in the questions it asks and the puzzles of the world, its just failing to provide characters that match. and maybe it has, and has just been presented deliberately obtusely and i missed the point- (which is an in-text theme! But also I can't explore that theme if the audience's participation is lost so it still is a Bad Thing!) which i would also argue is a Problem, not a success.
anyway anyway Flower that Bloomed Nowhere slaps and its mystery structure serves as a great device to convey the otherwise Intricate worldbuilding (and i like how said worldbuilding is usually introduced only as it has context to a Motive or as a Clue because it makes said worldbuilding feel meaningful which is nice) and im excited to see what happens next hope you have a good day byeeeee
hm- well, uh, i think a pretty good chunk of AN's readership is in my general orbit on here, so you're gonna get roughly the same effect as putting it in the tag, but-
i mean, the thing with AN is that... the main thing you're down on it for is sort of the whole game it's playing. first it introduces a concept in a bizarre, flowery, obfuscatory way that's playing around with language- and then it does that again, and again, from various angles, with different sorts of obfuscation, so you slowly get a picture of the concept through a sort of blind-men-and-the-elephant process. that's the fun of it, that's the game, doing a deep dive on the presentational tomfoolery to try and figure out what's going on before it just tells you.
that's what Grant's there for- he says "what the fuck are you talking about, explain it better", after it's already gone a few rounds of deliberately not explaining it clearly, and given you a chance to chew on it and try and piece it together for yourself. he's the answer key at the end of the puzzle, the way the story signposts "okay, so by this point you should pretty much Get this concept".
if you're just blasting through it to try to absorb the content as directly as possible, i can see the way the story presents itself kind of working against you, yeah. it's not trying to be obtuse for no reason- it's being obtuse because the process of grappling with the obtuse is the main selling point. if you don't like doing that, if it just bugs you when the story won't just say what it wants to say, yeah, it's not gonna be a good fit.
i kind of agree that some of the character arcs seem a little weak- like, i'm not entirely positive what Cordelia's doing here? what the point of her is? and- oh, god, don't tell Cordelia i said that, that's exactly what the poor thing doesn't need to hear.
but i think that's a product of... like, these aren't all supposed to be protagonists of a story. they're primarily lenses into the story, different perspectives on what's happening. they're part of the mechanics of the game, sources of new narration to use as part of the puzzle. grant doesn't really do anything, in-story, sure- but he's extremely active in nailing down concepts.
"the plot has become concerned with it's own telling"- yep. that's what it's doing. it's kind of always been doing that. personally, i like that!
i might have a bias here due to... having been following it on a serial basis for years since chapter 1? like, that's a format that lends itself well to the way the story wants to be engaged with, the slow and meticulous reading that leaves lots of time for contemplation. i'm not sure if i can evaluate how well that all works archivally- whether this is just a matter of differing preferences in how to consume fiction, or if structurally it's somehow encouraging a shallower reading that it doesn't reward as much.

Notre Dame welcomes arrival of 3 new bells, restoration underway
Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, whose historic bells fell silent after a devastating fire in 2019, will soon sound again with a fresh echo.
Three new bells were delivered to the Gothic landmark on Thursday, including the one used at the Stade de France during this year’s Paris Olympics.
The Olympic bell, donated by the Paris 2024 organising committee, will be installed along with two smaller bells, named Chiara and Carlos, above the altar where they will be rung during Mass, officials said.
Their arrival ahead of Notre Dame’s December 8 opening will mark a milestone in the painstaking restoration and modernisation of the 861-year-old cathedral, made famous around the world by Victor Hugo’s novel “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”
During the 2024 Games in Paris, the Olympic bell was rung by every track and field winner. It bears the inscription “Paris 2024” and the other two are decorated with a circular symbol combining an image of Notre Dame’s iconic rosary window and the monstrance, the religious vessel that takes centre stage in the cathedral’s altar.
The bells, made at the renowned Cornille Havard foundry in Villiers-le-Poelay, Normandy, embody France’s distinguished bell-making tradition. The bells will replace three bells that previously stood next to Notre Dame’s 19th-century spire, which collapsed during a fire that engulfed the cathedral’s rafters and roof.
Officials said the new bells will be placed elsewhere in the cathedral, where their return will add to the soundscape of Notre Dame’s daily life. They will join the eight historic bells from the cathedral’s north tower, which were reinstalled in September after being cleaned and repaired. These bells – Gabriel, Anne-Geneviève, Denis, Marcel, Etienne, Benoît-Joseph, Maurice and Jean-Marie – were originally cast in 2013 for Notre Dame’s 850th anniversary.
The bells survived the terrible fire
Notre Dame de Paris remains closed after a fire about four years ago. The catastrophe on the night of April 16, 2019 did not destroy the monument, but caused significant damage.
The cathedral’s two large bells remained intact in the south tower and were not damaged by the fire, officials added. More than 250 companies and hundreds of skilled craftsmen were involved in the reconstruction of Notre Dame.
The spire of the cathedral, built in the XIX century by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, and the 100-metre high roof of the nave, which rested on a unique 300-tonne structure made of oak beams, built in the XII century, modified in the XVII and stood until the beginning of the XXI century without any serious damage, were irretrievably lost.
Thanks to the actions of French firefighters, the walls and stained glass windows were saved. The sculptures of saints surrounding the collapsed spire remained intact – they had been removed for restoration long before the fire.

Important Headcanons to Consider
Chosen: Anne Robins
CAN THEY USE CHOPSTICKS - yes. With both hands. She hasn’t caught a fly yet, but she’s trying.
WHAT DO THEY DO WHEN THEY CAN’T SLEEP - She’ll usually work out. Her first choice would be to do target practice, but that would wake everyone else up.
WHAT WOULD THEY IMPULSE BUY AT THE GROCERY STORE - . hummus, carrots and lollipops. It’s a strange combination that she quite enjoys.
WHAT ORDER DO THEY WASH THINGS IN THE SHOWER - Usually shoulders, down to hips, face (miraculously doesn’t get her hair wet), then legs and face again. Then face once more in the sink.
WHAT’S THEIR COFFEE ORDER - Whatever everyone else is having. She’s too scared/polite to say anything otherwise.
WHAT SORT OF APPS WOULD THEY HAVE ON THEIR SMARTPHONE - messenger, tumblr that sits unused,, duolingo cause she wants to speak more than English, and whatsapp to message El.
HOW DO THEY ACT AROUND CHILDREN - she loves them. She acts... the same?
WHAT WOULD THEY WATCH ON TV WHEN THEY’RE BORED AND NOTHING THEY REALLY LIKE IS ON - something on SBS. She’ll slowly get addicted to whatever’s on.

“I never saw your beat for making mistakes, Anne.”
"Marilla, isn't it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?" "I'll warrant you'll make plenty in it," said Marilla. "I never saw your beat for making mistakes, Anne." "Yes, and well I know it," admitted Anne mournfully. "But have you ever noticed one encouraging thing about me, Marilla? I never make the same mistake twice." "I don't know as that's much benefit when you're always making new ones."

So I accidentally posted this early and then panic-deleted it, so I lost the original post I was responding to, but here are my thoughts on an Amphibia tarot deck.
I'm going to be assigning these based on of both the visuals of the cards and their interpretations. On that note, I've decided to use the Marseilles deck, because I think in the places where it diverges, the imagery matches better.
Oh, and like, this is how I interpret the meaning of each card, which might not necessarily line up with the way other people do, so be aware of that.
Fool - Sprig. New beginnings, opportunity, spontaneity, innocence.
I Magician - Maddie. Manifestation, creation, turning dreams into reality.
II Popess - Valeriana. Mystery, wisdom, spirituality.
III Empress - Lady Olivia. Femininity, motherhood, stability.
IV Emperor - Grime. Fatherhood, authority, law and order, leadership.
V Pope - Hop Pop. Tradition, education, wisdom, family values.
VI Lovers - Sasha, Anne, and Marcy. While the Lovers can be about romance, it's also the card that represents all kinds of relationships. It also symbolizes a crossroads, an important choice that needs to be made.
VII Chariot - Polly. Confidence, willpower, determination. Overcoming conflicts and pushing onward.
VIII Justice - Yunan. Justice, fairness, balance, responsibility.
IX Hermit - Wally. Introspection, self-reflection, solitude.
X Wheel of Fortune - The Calamity Box. Luck, destiny, chance, ups and downs.
XI Fortitude - Mrs Croaker. Inner strength, courage, perseverance, patience.
XII Hanged Man - Marcy. Sacrifice, suspension, metamorphosis.
XIII (Death) - Anne. The end of one phase and the beginning of another. This isn't just about death and endings, but it's also a card of transformation and change, letting go of the things that are holding you back.
XIV Temperance - Felicia. Balance, harmony, moderation.
XV Devil - The Night. Enslavement, temptation, fear, being trapped.
XVI Tower - Sasha's fall from Toad Tower perfectly encapsulates this, both visually and symbolically. It's catastrophe, destruction, an unexpected and dramatic change.
XVII Star - Bessie. Inspiration, hope, renewed power and strength.
XVIII Moon - Andrias. Deception, manipulation, illusion.
XIX Sun - Ivy. Happiness, optimism, joy, success.
XX Judgement - Calamity Anne. Judgement, rebirth, reflection, reckoning.
XXI World - To match the card, I'd probably just make this one the world of Amphibia. Conclusion, fulfillment, achievement, harmony. Enlightenment.

Mistakes & Regrets XXI
Summary: When a trip to your Dad’s hometown of Hawkins goes wrong, you end up in the year 1983, and have to learn how to cope with being stuck in the past.
Pairing: Steve Harrington / Future!Reader (like, a really slow burn)
Warnings: Swearing, violence
A/N: Definetaly not my favorite chapter, but we need to keep moving and i was having writer’s block :/
• • •
Your dad and pa always said to stay yourself.
There was always something about the exact words they used. About never changing who you were for others that always stayed in your head, repeating itself occasionally. But you hadn’t thought about them in a long time.
You changed for a lot of people since you got here. You’d gone from the very loud outspoken girl in all of your classes who cracked jokes and got in trouble frequently to a quiet and reserved shy girl now. Except for around Steve. You weren’t afraid to be annoying around him. And others picked up on it.
So then came the question, was everyone else like the kids you went to school with most of your life except for Steve, or was there something else more there?
Well, you’d cried in front of Joyce, and Jonathan, and even Nancy in the past year. Yet, you kept your composure around Steve. He made you feel stronger than you really were. Like he boosted your confidence or something.
Hearing the kitchen door open, you were up on your feet and heading to the kitchen table, where everyone else was already beginning to gather.
Hopper had a pen and a ripped piece of paper.
You were looking over Lucas and Dustin’s shoulders. “I think he’s talking, just not with words.” He began to draw small circles and a long line. Morse code. You only knew it because for some reason your dad had wall art in the house, showing it for each letter. And while you never memorized it, you knew what it looked like.
“What is that?” Steve asked from beside you.
The boys and you all answered.
“H-E-R-E”
“Here.” You repeated it as a word, everyone else doing the same. Everyone knowing the simple four letters.
“Will’s still in there. He’s talking to us.” Hopper came to the conclusion.
Soon enough they were back in there, leaving Steve, Nancy, you and all of the kids but Mike in the house.
Hopper had his walkie in the shed, repeating back the code that Will was tapping on the side of his chair, letting the kids figure it out, while Nancy wrote it. You had a terrible feeling, and kpt exchanging looks with Steve every few seconds.
“Close gate.” You finished as Nancy wrote the last letter. “He wants us to close the gate.”
It was an obvious fix. But to do so, you probably needed Eleven. And if done so, you’d never see home again. You’d never graduate in the year you were supposed to. But you’d only resigned yourself to that fact. So while it still hurt, you knew it needed to be done.
The kids and nancy all looked at you, Lucas and Nancy by far having the saddest looks on their faces, but Steve looked at everyone, seeing their gaze was fixed on you, and he too, saw how your arms were crossed and how you looked at nothing in particular.
But the phone rang.
“Shit!” You turned on the ball of your foot, rushing to the phone. It was loud. And you knew that if you couldn’t fall asleep because the one in your apartment was too loud to drown out even with three pillows pushed against your ears, that they could hear it from the shed.
Dustin passed you, grabbing the phone from the receiver and putting it back on.
You stopped next to the phone, looking back and seeing everyone staring with wide eyes, Nancy still holding the notepad and red crayon.
The very beginning of the next ring, you grabbed the receiver, tearing it off the wall and holding it to your chest like you would with an infant you were trying to shush.
“Do you think he heard that?” Max inquired.
“It’s just a phone. It could be anywhere. Right?”
Shrugging, you looked down at the blue phone. “How many phones is that now? Four?” You questioned, looking at Nancy. Who only shrugged and shook her head, a silent ‘why does it matter?’
But you heard that noise. It was in the distance but you still heard it. “Fuck.” You murmured. You tossed the phone to the ground watching as everyone from the shed ran back, Jonathan carrying Will and running to one of the bedrooms to set him down.
“What happened?”
“He heard the ringing.” He explained as the kids looked out the window.
“Hey! Away from the windows!” Hopper bellowed. Walking into the living room. He looked at Jonathan, holding up a hunting rifle. “You know how to use this?”
Without a word, Steve grabbed your hand, taking you a few steps further into the living room with him, letting you go while Hopper tossed the rifle to Nancy instead.
Pulling the pistol from your jeans, you turned the safety off, already knowing you’d reloaded it when you got to the house.
The kids stayed behind most of you, and Hopper had a rifle. The kind police or military would use. An automatic, you were pretty sure.
“Stay behind me.” Steve told you, swinging the bat around in a brief circle.
Nodding, you took a step back, holding your gun up and aiming towards the door as the screeching from the creatures outside got louder.
You heard another one come from the other side of the house, and in a split second, you all turned to it, still holding your weapons. You couldn’t hear anything now except for your own heartbeat and drowned out thoughts.
You all turned back to the front of the house again, you did it because you were following their every move, but something kept you from being completely alert, like you weren’t completely in danger. Like you were somehow safe. “Don’t be scared.” It was Anne’s voice in your head.
You took her word, and felt your ears toon back into what was being heard by everyone else from outside. Those things screeching, but what also sounded like crashing. As if they were being thrown into things. And one completely stopped. Before the window shattered, and it seemed to be thrown in.
Grabbing onto Steve’s arm, but ending up with a firm grip on his shirt, you aimed the gun over his shoulder, looking at the creature that was laying on the hardwood, limb and unmoving. You knew that everyone was on edge, and scared, but just by looking at it, you knew it was dead.
“Holy shit.” Dustin mumbled.
“Is it dead?” Hopper pushed it’s head back with his foot, and nothing happened but the creaking of the front door, which had everyone turning back to the front.
You lowered your gun when the bolt turned, even though everyone else who had weapons, brought them back up. The door’s chain latch was undone as well, and slowly it opened, and in came a very familiar face, in very unfamiliar clothing and makeup.
“Jesus christ, El.” You murmured to yourself.
You watched with a small smile on your face as Mike and Eleven hugged each other, after almost a year of being apart, after a year of Mike thinking she was dead.
“Is that the girl-”
“Yeah,” You interrupted Steve, in a hushed whisper. Turning the safety back on of the pistol and putting it back, looking down at the crayon drawings under your feet.
You were happy, and a little envious. But you knew that they hadn’t made their peace with being apart. You’d made yours with being apart from your family.
“That you were okay?” Looking back up to the scene in front of you, you saw Hopper take a step forward.
“Because we wouldn’t let her.” Hopper gave you a quick glance, before turning back to Mike who turned to him at that point. It was true that you were partly responsible for telling he she shouldn’t contact Mike at any point.
“El, where have you been?” You questioned, walking over, not caring if any one of the kids were mad at you. You only really socialized with them when you took Will to the arcade or one of these events happened.
She allowed you to embrace her for a split second before she looked at Hopper. “Where has he been?” Her voice was laced with venom, but the only thing you could really think was that her hair smelled of heavy duty hair gel. The kind girls used in ROTC.
But she still allowed Hopper to pull her out your arms and into his.
“You two have been hiding her.” Mike sounded angry, and because you weren’t the one facing away he came over and shoved you.
“What the fuck, Mike? Wanna fucking go?” Before you could approach the 13 year old, Steve had come over, and Hopper’s attention was taken away from El. Steve was facing you and had an arm against your torso, hand on your side, keeping you from getting closer to Mike.
“Y/n, you’re not going to fight-”
“I will throw fucking hands, Steven, I will beat this scrawny little asshole to a fucking pulp!” You were exhausted, and already agitated and overthinking about everything, and Mike shoving you? Everything felt like coming to a breaking point.
Hopper grabbed Mike, and took him away, while Steve took you further from the two, closer to the door than anything else. “Stop picking fights with people.” He told you, his hand still on your side, thumb against your ribcage from over the t-shirt you’d worn.
“What?”
He gave a look, eyebrows raised and head tilted. “You’ve gotten into fights with a few teachers, me, one other student last year, Kieth earlier this week, and now you’re trying to fight a kid-”
“Who told you about my fights with Mrs. Jensen and Mr. Larn?”
The look only got worse. “Stop trying to pick fights.” He said again, still fully knowing that he deserved the punch the year before, and the tiny little scar on the side of his nostril from it. “I get we’re all a little on edge, You’re tired, I can tell. Just… don’t fight literal children.”
“They’re only two years younger than me, Steve.”
“Dude-”
“Okay!” You said in a defensive tone, finally relenting.
You looked behind Steve, and saw how Eleven and the two other boys reunited as well. But quickly your gaze shifted to Jonathan and Nancy who were staring at both of you. But not at either one of you in particular. Which was when you realize that while this position with STeve didn’t feel unusual, or weird, or anything other than friendly to you, it wasn’t to others.
He still had his hand on your side, which is also when you noticed that while over your shirt, as it should be, it was under the jacket he’d lent to you. And you had a hand on his arm, more specifically right under his elbow.
In a split second it became very overwhelming and very obvious to you how close he was, just like when you were in the apartment. And even though the smell of detergent on his clothes was still faint, it was mostly gone. Instead he smelled like deodorant and dirt.
Maybe Jonathan was onto something.
“What’s wrong?”
You were snapped out of your thoughts, and your eyes focused on Steve’s face. His brows were furrowed and the question hung shallowly in the air around you.
“Nothing.” You lied.
Jonathan was onto something. And it terrified you.
• • •
It was bittersweet in a sense. Knowing how this would turn out. Knowing that everyone in the long run would be fine, but also knowing everyone would be traumatized, even just a little.
You could barely cope with what happened over a year ago when you were in the Upside Down, and you couldn’t even remember most of it. Just bits and pieces. Feelings.
“Y/n.”
Looking at Eleven you watched as she took a step away from Mike, and toward you, reaching into her jacket and pulling a small box out, handing it to you.
“What is this?” You asked, hearing Jonathan and Nancy get into the car, while Hopper opened the driver’s door to his own car.
“Someone told me to give it to you.” It didn’t clear anything up, even as she walked away to Hopper’s car getting into the passenger side.
The box looked like a ring box you’d see in jewelry stores, but it was far lighter. And you could hear a rattling of the expensive cardboard.
The two vehicles drove off. Leaving you and Steve with the kids. All except for Will and Eleven.
You put the box in the jacket pocket, not wanting to open it right then and there. “We should head back in.” You reached out to Mike, grabbing his shoulder, and to your surprise, he stepped back into your arm, letting you rest it on his shoulders.
Even though you’d threatened to beat him into a pulp.
And while you didn’t quite know how, with in ten minutes of getting back into the house, you were advocating for interdimensional arson.
“Y/n,” Mike tried, while you stood next to Steve, hands on your hips and eyes trains on the point where the tunnels all met. “What do you think?”
“Y/n, we promised to keep them safe-”
“I’ve always wanted to set something on fire.” You shrugged. “Besides this thing?” Turning to Steve you pointed at the meeting point. “Kinda deserves it!”
“What?”
“She was in the Upside Down.” Dustin clarified. Your eyes snapped over to Dustin. You hadn’t shared that with Steve for very specific reasons
“Wait, what?”
“Yeah, why do you think I was always being picked up by the chief from school, dude? We were going to the lab with Mrs. Byers and Will.”
“You never mentioned it before-”
“It was never brought up before. I’m all for setting this bitch on fire.” You quickly defended.
“No! We’re not doing this! We’re waiting for the starting team to do their job-”
“This isn’t a stupid sports game-” Mike interrupted.
“We’re not doing this! Does everybody understand that?”
No one could answer before the sound of an engine revving and coming towards the house was heard. Max left the hall, going towards to window and looking through it, with Lucas going right up next to her. “It’s my brother.” The way she said it made you feel cold. Like he wasn’t a good person. “He can’t know I’m here. He’ll kill me. He’ll kill us.”
“Steve. . .”
“I’ll handle it, you guys stay here.” He told you, heading for the door. He was out of the house within seconds, but something about the situation made you feel wrong. You’d never even heard your aunt Maxine ever talk about a brother.
“Guys, get away from the window.” You told the group of kids, who had gathered after Steve left. But the second you said that, the kids all jumped away.
“Shit! Did he see us?”
“Guys! Get over here!” You told them, gesturing towards yourself. They all came over like ducklings and stood behind you, which only made you more nervous, especially from how Max stood right behind you, almost as if you were a great hiding spot.
The door slammed open, and an older boy walked through, his hair permed and cut into a mullet. He looked like the kind of person who would have made fun of you in school. His red button down almost all the way undone and tucked into his jeans.
“Well, well, well.” Behind him, you could barely see Steve on the ground, clutching his stomach before the door was slammed shut.
You understood why Max was so afraid the moment you laid eyes on him. He smelled like beer, cologne, and cigarettes.
Lucas got behind you as well, and almost instinctively you had an arm to the side covering him.
“Lucas Sinclair. What a surprise.” He took long yet slow strides toward you, not giving you much space, and towering over you. He looked over your shoulder. “I thought I told you to stay away from him, Max.”
It wasn’t hard to put together that this was the new guy every girl at school was swooning over. And you couldn’t understand why. He was terrifying.
“Back off, prick.” You told him.
It seemed as if he only registered your presence then. He eyed you for a second before turning his attention back to his sister. “You disobeyed me. And you know what happens when you disobey me.”
“Billy. . .” Max’s voice was afraid and cautious.
“I break things.”
You didn’t have time to process anything before Billy shoved you away and grabbed Lucas by the collar of his jacket. Shoving him into the kitchen and slamming his body against a shelf.
Max, Mike, and Dustin all started yelling and you moved after them in a heartbeat. Trying to grab onto Billy’s arm to get him to let go of Lucas.
“Get off of me!” Lucas shouted.
“Since Maxine won’t listen to me, maybe you will-”
You tried to pull him off, but he shoved you into the kitchen table, your hip slamming up against it, and surprisingly the table was far heavier than you imagined, and far more sturdier as well, because you landed against it harshly, and the pain shot through your hip.
“Stay away from her. Stay away from her! You hear me?” It wasn’t hard to tell that Billy’s motive wasn’t to protect Max. You’d seen protective siblings, you’d been one for Daniel, this was racially motivated. And from how he’d completely ignored Mike and Dustin gave it away.
“I said get off of me!” Lucas brought his knee up and against Billy’s groin, stunning Billy and making him let go of him. Billy took a few steps back before looking back up at Lucas. “You’re so dead, Sinclair! You’re dead!”
You saw the familiar figure coming in from the living room and you grabbed Lucas’ arm, pulling him towards you.
Steve grabbed Billy by the shoulder while you took Lucas over to his friends, with you once again acting as a shield in case Billy got the upper hand and tried to get any of them again.
You could hear the punch before you even turned around, but when you did, you saw how amused Billy was and when he started laughing was when you were confused. He looked insane.
“Looks like you got some fire in you after all, huh? I’ve been waiting to meet this King Steve everybody’s been telling me so much about.” He had a drop of blood on his upperlip from his nose as he spoke.
And Steve wasn’t into the games he wanted to play. “Get out.”
Billy swung and Steve dodged. “Steve!”
“Kick his ass, Steve!” Dustin encouraged.
“Get him!”
Both Mike and Dustin were acting as hype men while Steve got Billy further into your grandmother’s kitchen, eventually with Billy landing against the sink,
“Steve!” Was all you could get out when the plate shattered over his head, the shards of ceramic on the floor
Steve was trying to find his balance, backing up and needing a moment, You back the kids against a wall as Billy continued to follow him.
Billy grabbed him by the shirt. “No one tells me what to do!” You’d never actually seen someone head butt someone else in a fight, this was a first. And Steve was now on the ground by the couch, with Billy still going after him. Just by how enraged Billy was and how out of it your best friend was, you knew Billy wouldn’t stop until he was dead.
“Stop it!” You yelled, going over to the two teenage boys, trying to grab Billy and get him off of Steve, but to no avail. All he did was push you off of him again.
You were on the ground now as well, but against the a wall, you could see the blood coming from both Steve’s mouth and nose. Small cuts around his face from where the plate shattered and cut him.
You jumped a little when Max stabbed her brother in the neck. But when she stepped back, you could see the syringe sticking out.
That was enough to stop him, and have him off of Steve, and the second he was on his feet and facing her, you made your move over to Steve.
It was all becoming very real within a matter of seconds. His eyes were closed and he was completely limb on the ground.
“Steve.” You mumbled to him, grabbing his cheeks and making him look at you. At least his body wasn’t stiff.
Tears were welling up in your eyes as you looked down at him. Sure, you’d seen him with blood on his face before, but it was never this bad. The last time he deserved it.for being an asshole. All he’d done this time was try to protect everyone. He was always doing that, wasn’t he?
“Steve, Steven- wake up.” Your voice cracked, and you didn’t even flinch when Billy collapsed only a few feet away.
But you did flinch at the sound of metal digging into the hardwood. Looking over you saw Max with the nail bat, between Billy’s legs. “Say you understand! Say it! Say it!” She screamed at him.
He mumbled it under his breath. “What?” Maxine demanded.
“I understand.”

I don’t know where this came from, I was just rewatching episode 4 of Gentleman Jack (as I do) and felt the need to write (even more) about the last scene. No one asked for it but who cares, I’m stuck at home with too many thoughts. So...
The last scene in episode 4 is all about consent. Anne’s: “I’m taking it as a no” wants to highlight the fact that if the ‘yes’ is not explicitly said then, it’s not a ‘yes’: the uncertainty of a positive answer makes it so that the only admissible answer is ‘no’. We all know this is the main way to interpret the scene, especially considering what comes after, once we learn what happened with Ainsworth.
But, this is the message for the XXI century audience, this is our take away.
So, in this post, I don’t want to focus on that. Here, I’m interested in trying to understand what that whole exchange means for the characters. I’m fascinated by what Anne Lister is actually trying to say, then and there, with the: “I’m taking it as a no.” and with the “Well, it isn’t a yes.” that seems to reinforce the same concept.
Let’s rewind a little bit. Ann Walker sent a note to Anne Lister that said: “I have written the words ‘yes’ and ‘no’ on a slip of paper and put them in a purse. If you still think it better to decide today, the paper you draw out first must be the answer”. – Before going to Ann Walker, Anne Lister has, in fact, done what Ann Walker asked of her: to draw from that purse. And she draw a ‘no’. Going with what Ann Walker wanted, well, the answer is ‘no’.
When Anne Lister arrives at Crow Nest, she’s there (heartbroken, upset, sad) to let Ann Walker know that she doesn’t like to have her “future happiness decided by fate”, that she would have liked a proper answer and that that was not it.
But at the end...well, at the end she just says: “I’m taking it as a no”. – “Ann, if you don’t give me a proper answer, I’ll take it as a no anyway. Regardless of what’s written on that piece of paper.” And what happens next?
(but actually it is, it is a ‘no’, AL drew a ‘no’)
Ann Walker’s first instinct is to say that, no, it is not a ‘no’ (she doesn’t want it to be a ‘no’) – but, well, it is a ‘no’: Anne did what Ann Walker asked and the answer is no.
The way she turns around, the way she opens her arms in that what-am-I-supposed-to-do / what-do-you-want-me-to-do way, speaks volumes. She’s not only reinforcing what she said earlier – that for her a not-yes is basically a no – but she’s also letting Ann know that the paper she drew “isn’t a yes” – “I did what you wanted. It isn’t a yes. So, what are we going to do Ann? Because if we have to go with your idea, well, your answer is ‘no’.”
Look how Ann’s expression goes from panic (she’s scared to lose Anne) to realization. She’s realizing that Anne did do what she asked in the note she sent her, and that the answer was a negative one. You can see the exact moment Ann goes: “Oh, Anne did draw from the purse, and it was ‘no’”. And now what? She’s gonna lose Anne anyway if the situation stays like this, her (Ann’s) answer is and will stay ‘no’ if she doesn’t explain herself.
The point I’m trying to make here is this: Ann Walker knows that Anne Lister drew a ‘no’, and when she’s faced with the reality of it, she realizes how scary and impossible it is for her to think about her life without Anne Lister in it.
I will not analyse the whole scene because a) I already wrote a long-ass post about it and b) ...
.... going back to the “Well, it isn’t a yes” line. I love it, and this post is basically just about my love for that very specific line. Anne is not simply saying – “Well, I drew a ‘no’, so, it is a ‘no’” – no, that line is not that simple. It’s not there to say just one thing, it is so layered. With just one line she’s saying that she wants a serious, committed, felt answer, and if that is not the case then “it isn’t a yes”; she’s letting Ann know that she did draw from that purse – as Ann Walker wanted – and “it isn’t a yes”, fate chose ‘no’; and she’s also teaching us a lesson about consent, “it isn’t a no” is not enough, “it isn’t a no” does not equal ‘yes’, “It isn’t a no” isn’t a ‘yes’.

“History’s about to get overthrown“
Trailer of the show
Today I am going to talk about a recent musical, that became quite popular in only 2 years: Six the musical.
The songs are performed by “the 6 wives“ of Henry the VIII, each of them sings her biography and her point of view of her relation with their common husband. The show isn’t as long as a regular show on Broadway, because it is more like a concert than a Musical. It was written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, and premiered in Edinburg in 2017. Since then, the show went from Scotland to London, and was to premiere on Broadway 6 months ago (but thanks to Covid19, it didn’t).
Like for Hamilton, the producers and the performers are part of the new generation; they took the risk to present something new, and it worked.
As I said, it’s more of a concert than a musical. The songs are pop and catchy. The singers are like rockstars on stage. It’s a whole performance, the costumes imitate the one that iconic divas from the XXIs century wear during their concerts.
The band is only composed by women, and “the queens“ are portrayed by different kind of profile (for exemple Catherine Parr, Anne of Cleves and Catherine of Aragon are black).
There is a lot to say about this show but I am going to talk about one major event linked to this musical. On the 31 August 2019, the cast organized a flashmob in front of the Tower of London.
A large amount of people were reunited to share this moment, the performers themselves were there. The fact that people answered to the call, testifies how an audience can influence the impact of a movement.
I am talking about “movement“ because this flashmob was not that innocent. When you look at the context it’s a bunch of people singing and dancing over a song that critics the British monarchy, at the location were some of those wives have been executed (Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard). The aim of that musical, is to point the maltreatment of the women in court. It gives a “voice“ to those women, who have been lost in history. People remember them as the wives of Henry the VIII and that’s all. We have an other version of History, and we learn a bit more about them. They finally have the tribute that they deserved.
A flashmob doesn’t seem like such a tribute, but the message from that musical, is to tell that in history and in the royal family, women aren’t respected and that it is still the case today. Elizabeth II’s jewelry is in the Tower of London, bringing this crowd together in front of it, is highly symbolic. Because it’s like if the song was addressed to the Queen and the whole monarchical system.

My Heart’s At The Wheel Now (Part 1)- Today’s A Day Like Any Other
AO3 Link
Title Inspiration: Everything Changes from Waitress
hi so part 2 isn’t written but i have like no impulse control so here we are!!!
trigger warnings: mentions of needles
This had been a terrible idea.
Granted, Catherine was aware of that the moment she’d heard it. Tattoos never seemed like a good idea to her, but everyone else had been quite excited when Kath suggested the idea of matching tattoos to the band, and she’d rather not bring the group down. Besides, she had taken a liking to the idea herself.
Now though, standing there watching as Aragon got hers, she felt a shiver crawl up her spine as anxiety began to settle in her stomach. Her band mate tried to be subtle about it, but Catherine could see the occasional blinks and slight frowns- it hurt.
Not that she didn’t already know that. But the confirmation only added to her nervousness and, dare she say it, fear, for her turn.
Normally, she wasn’t the kind to be scared of new technology, none of them were. Getting the chance to be reborn as children and to grow up in the XX or XXI century was probably the cause of this. Still, she couldn’t help the way her body tensed as she watched from the doorway.
So yes, Catherine Parr wasn’t the biggest fan of tattoos. More specifically, needles. She’d figured that out as a child, due to mandatory vaccination, something she was extremely impressed and grateful for as someone who had to live through a time where there wasn’t even a cure for these diseases. Still, said feelings didn’t ease her nervousness back then, and she couldn’t use them now.
A little after Boleyn’s turn to get hers started, Catherine quietly excused herself from the room, going to stand outside the shop by the doorway. She wasn’t sure just how long she stood there, but she was jostled out of her thoughts by a hand setting on her shoulder.
“Yo, you okay?” She turned around to find none other than Boleyn, looking oddly concerned. “You seemed uncomfortable.” Catherine read her expression, hesitating on whether or not to talk about it, especially with someone like Boleyn. But then again, she knew she needed to open up more to them.
“I don’t like needles.” She explained quietly, staring at the street ahead of herself. “I still want to do this, though. Just… I dunno.” She ended up mumbling, silently cursing herself and her difficulty with expressing herself as she shoved her hands in her pockets.
“Hey, it’s chill.” She looked up as Anne spoke, raising an eyebrow. “Tell you what, I’ll stick by you, and we can rant about whatever. It’ll help get your mind out of it.” Catherine paused as Anne offered, thinking over it.
“Hell, won’t hurt to try.” Anne laughed, lightly wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “C’mon, let’s go. Your turn’s probably soon.”
-----///-----
Later that night, Catherine was jostled out of her daze by heavy footsteps- definitely Cleves’s- coming up the stairs. She blinked as she glanced at the clock she left on her table- 1:24 AM, and yet she’d only heard… four of the queens go to bed?
Catherine was used to staying up until long after the others, but very rarely did she have any company past 1 AM. So when she made the connection, she set her pen down, turning to stand up. She headed downstairs, towards their living room. The large glass door there was still wide open, and Catherine made her way out through it towards the garden.
Near immediately, she spotted Anne, silently sitting on the grass with her knees curled up to her chest, arms folded and resting on top of them with her chin supported by her arms. And for a moment, she didn't know how to react. That was, before Anne spoke up.
“Are you just gonna stand there like a creep?” There was no bite to it, more so a quiet amusement, and Catherine gave her a small smile as she walked over, sitting cross legged beside her.
“Usually I don’t have company this late.” she didn’t elaborate further, and thankfully Anne didn’t ask her to. They sat in comfortable silence for a while, before Anne laid on her back, patting the spot behind her to invite Catherine to join her, before folding her arms over her stomach.
“I miss how many stars there used to be.” Catherine didn’t need to ask her what she meant- the drastic contrast was clear to see in her mind. “Whenever things got too much, I’d wait until it was dark and then head out on my own to just look at them.” She sighed, and Catherine raised an eyebrow at that.
“Lizzie loved them too.” Ah. “Whenever me and Henry argued, which was… a lot, she’d get worked up and I’d take her with me and talk to her about the different constellations.” She paused, smiling sadly, and Catherine would’ve frowned at how drastically her behavior had changed if it weren’t for the subject at hand.
“She was the brightest little girl, you know? Could speak before she turned two, in both French and English.” Catherine could very easily notice the pride in her voice, the same way she could when Anne successfully proved someone wrong, but it was softer this time, it didn’t have the same edge it usually did. She blinked as her train of thought was interrupted by Anne speaking up again. “Ah, but you already knew that. You were really involved in her education, right?”
Catherine nodded, giving her a small nod. “I didn’t take on many students back then- I’m lucky I took on any at all back then. But I must admit, Lizzie was easily the brightest student I ever met, taught by me or not.” She chuckled lightly. “She still loved the stars, even as a teenager. Whenever I’d wake up in the middle of the night and couldn’t find her, I’d go outside and there she’d be, staring at the sky. We’d sit together and she’d talk about them for ages.” She smiled, closing her eyes for a moment before opening them again and looking at Anne. “Said she used to do it with you. That she didn’t have a lot of memories with you, but of the ones she did have, that was her favorite.”
Anne looked away, then looked back at her with a small smile, tears pricking at the corner of her eyes for a moment before Anne noticed them and hurriedly wiped them away. “You’re a special one, Catherine Parr.” She began softly. “Lizzie got close to you, right? She didn’t do that with anyone but me and some of my ladies in waiting. Not even her own father managed to break that, but you did.”
Catherine smiled softly at that, but it quickly faded as her mind wandered to what he did to her. It happened much too often when she thought of Lizzie, of how they could still had a good relationship had it not been for Catherine’s unwillingness to believe someone she loved would do such a thing. And it cost her heavily. It cost her all she had built up with Lizzie, who she thought of like a daughter.
She was jostled out of her train of thought by Anne speaking up. “Penny for your thoughts, Lady Parr?” They both gave a light chuckle, although it was quite mirthless in Catherine’s case. She sighed, turning her head to look away from Anne.
“I’m sorry.” She finally spoke, continuing before Anne could reply. “For what happened to her.” The two stayed quiet after that, and then Anne spoke.
“Most of us regret stuff we did, or didn’t, do in our past lives. I regret being the reason Aragon and her Mary got cast out of court, and likewise, Jane regrets being reason me and Lizzie got cast out, or in my case, killed.” Anne sucked in a sharp breath, then continued.
“I was angry about it when I found out, I’ll admit it. But I’ve had enough time to sort my feelings out and accept that a grudge over 500 years long, on something you didn’t even do? That’s not a grudge worth keeping.” She sighed, and Catherine felt a tap on her shoulder, a silent request for her to face Anne. She did, and Anne gave her a small smile. “And from what I’ve read, Lizzie didn’t resent you either. So, Lady Catherine Parr, I think it’s high time you quit blaming yourself over that.”
Catherine scanned her face for any signs of resentment, of hidden meanings she needed to look for, but she found nothing, and slowly, she gave Anne a sheepish smile. “You’re being oddly soft night.” Anne chuckled, raising an eyebrow. “And you’re being oddly open. We’re both in rare states.” Catherine laughed softly, then stopped when she heard footsteps from the inside.
“Guys, Cassandra wants to talk to all six of us.” She looked up when she heard Kath’s voice, but only soon enough to watch her walk back inside. She frowned once she’d processed her words- Cassandra rarely called them without having nothing going on, and especially not this late. Anne seemed to have the same thought, because she sat up, looking much more serious than usual. “Something’s definitely up.” Cath nodded, sitting up and moving to stand, but before she could, Anne set a hand on her shoulder. She turned to look at her, finding her with her hand held up, showing the tattoo she’d gotten today- a green crown, with five sparkles around her, each one the color of one of the other queens.
Assuming she wanted a high five, Catherine held up her own hand, showing her tattoo (essentially the same, but the crown being blue and one of the sparkles being green), but before they could high five, Anne lightly tapped their wrists together, letting their tattoos touch. Anne grinned, then hopped up and offered her hand.
The pair headed inside and to the kitchen, where the others were all sitting. Kath was at the head of the table, in front of her phone. Anne stayed by the entrance, but Catherine went over to Kath, who she could see was in a video call with Cassandra.
“You said you had some people you wanted us to meet?” Kath spoke, and Cassandra nodded, opening her mouth to answer before looking up when someone off camera talked to her. She nodded, then looked back at Kath and Catherine.
“One of them wants to talk to you, so I’m just gonna pass the phone over to them.” Her hand moved to cover the camera as she passed the phone over, and Catherine and Kath exchanged a curious look. When they looked back at the screen, however, they both froze.
Catherine recognized the girl on the screen, or at least she thought she did. Fiery red hair, gentle brown eyes, freckles spread across her face, and a terribly familiar smirk all tugged right at her heartstrings. Her suspicions (and judging by the girl’s expression, Kath’s as well) were only further cemented when the girl spoke, her smirk turning into an awkward smile. “Hey. Yeah, it’s me.” The pair exchanged a look again, and then spoke the only thing in their minds.
“Lizzie?!”
