Diary of a Junebug
Winter sports on Wuhu Island!
We’re kicking off the snowy season with winter sports! Since we had such a great time on Wuhu Island, I figured why not drop by for a short vacay during the holiday season? First, there’s the winter sports events - which I heard are super fun and awesome - and also we all need a bit of a break from the hectic holiday season.
Not to mention that there’s a big figure skating competition next week that’s a must-watch event! Also I know some friends who will be participating so another reason for the getaway is to hang out with them. It’s gonna be a lot of wintery fun!
First, there’s snowball fights at what’s usually the soccer field. We’re divided into teams of five and we throw snowballs at each other. There’s barricades scattered across the field and piles of snow where we make out ammo. All that running around easily makes you forget how cold it is! And in the end we get snow cones!
After some rest, the next event came up. Snowboarding! Thanks to the skateboarding amenity, I’ve been practicing a bunch of moves. Less wipeouts and a lot more cool tricks!
Haven’t got a perfect score yet but there’s still plenty of time for another round!
Ice hockey, by far, was the most intense event ever! We were slipping, sliding, chasing pucks, and knocking sticks - all in the name of friendly competition! I’ve gotten knocked around a few times, nothing too bad though. I’ve even made a few goals!
And our camp won! It was a close competition between the other camp. After that both teams celebrated with sushi and sake!
As advised by the locals, we spent the next day relaxing at the spa and onset. With all the fun we’ve been having, it’s easy to forget how strenuous sports can be! Wuhu Island is almost like a different place in the winter. Now I want to visit here during different seasons just to see what it’s like!
After a chill day, it’s back to sports!
The morning begins with a sledding race! We climb to the biggest hill on the island and it all goes downhill from there! It’s built like an obstacle course so it’s important to have good control of your sled. The slope’s just as intimidating as it looks!
I got seventh place out of twenty!
A break in between was spent at the bowling alley. I got a double strike and then a turkey on two different games! We also got fruit slushies that were the colors of the bowling balls that not only looked pretty, but also taste good.
Second event of the day is ice canoeing! I can barely move a kayak in water so a canoe in ice is gonna be…interesting. Luckily the chances of me and my team overturning is low (knock on wood). Here it goes!
Second to last place…not bad! And no canoes were overturned in this event so a double win!
And the latest is the skiing event in the mountains. The slope’s set up like an obstacle course with three different paths we can take - beginner, challenge, and extreme. As I’m no pro at skiing, I took the easy course first.
Then after getting kinda bored of that I took a gamble with challenge. It took several falls before I can go down that slope with full confidence that I’ll end up with my head in the snow at some point. It was tough, but a lot of fun once I started getting more comfortable with the skis.
Of course I had to give extreme a go - though maybe I probably shouldn’t. I took a pretty hard fall after getting one of my skis caught in one of the barriers. Luckily the ice kinda helped with the pain but I have a feeling that tomorrow I’ll be waking up with a sore back.
Good thing we’re hitting the hot springs tomorrow!
