I was telling my partner about how, back when "the Babadook is gay" first became a meme, I saw a small amount of stupid tumblr/twitter discourse to the effect that the meme was homophobic because it associated being gay with being a monster or horror antagonist. And they agreed this was an overly touchy complaint, but also mentioned that it had never occurred to them to think of "the Babadook is gay" as either mean-spirited (he's gay because he's a monster, and both those things are Bad/Other) or humorous-because-absurd-and-random (as I'd thought of it, being as it was inspired by the movie getting erroneously listed as LGBTQ Cinema).

Instead, they said they thought it was because repressed queerness functions pretty much the same way as repressed grief. It will haunt you no matter how hard you try to deny its existence or its need for expression, and the more you deny it, the more threatening and catastrophic it will seem to you-- the more likely it is that your fear will influence your behavior in ways that harm and alienate people around you. The closet will Babadook ya!!!

Batman Villain Movie Ideas, Part XII: Two-Face

Harvey Dent AKA Two-Face is yet another one that's gotten pretty decent dues in the live-action movie treatment, although, I suppose, Billy Dee Williams's version was only Harvey, Tommy Lee Jones's was only Two-Face, and while Aaron Eckhardt's version did delve into both, he was vastly overshadowed by the Joker. So, there's some room for improvement. We all know his drill, a formerly good man and friend of Bruce and Gordon, hiding a mild case of D.I.D. until an accident with acid disfigured his face and caused his cruel and violent alt persona to surface in full force. He then became a crime boss, using a damaged coin to balance his two sides in all decision-making.

Origin Movie: I suppose an origin would be similar to The Dark Knight, with Harvey forming a partnership with Gordon and Batman to combat the more run-of-the-mill criminals like Falcone or Thorne. The movie would then delve into Harvey's psyche, with him quietly battling Two-Face for control until an accident brings Two-Face out much stronger than before. This sucks a little with the full-on villain only being a third-act character, but it would still work fine.

Sequel Movie: This one paces it better, letting you introduce Harvey in the first movie, and possibly end it with him getting disfigured during the final battle, and then use the sequel to focus on Two-Face coming out in full force. Not like in Batman Forever though, where Two-Face was basically just a glorified Joker. There should be a constant and ever present struggle between his two sides all throughout the movie.

Finale Movie: This might even pace it better. Use the first to establish him as a major supporting character, have Bruce realize his internal struggles in the second and have him suffer his accident, and then get a full-on Two-Face in the finale. Or you could bring in the Judge persona. That works too.

Supporting Villain: Honestly, the biggest problem with Harvey's portrayals so far is that they've had to be co-villains with someone else. But, the nature of his villainous turn does require at least one villain to spend most of the film's time on before his accident. Or there's "The Long Halloween." That one is possible too.

Overall, here is my ranking of them:

Sequel Movie: Sequel and finale are tied, they both fill out the main crux of his story well.

Finale Movie

Origin Movie: Scrunches his plot down a bit, but it's still fine.

Supporting Villain: That one has been overdone.
