PSA pt2: when someone makes a racial joke, you don’t have to just laugh it off. Call them out. Question them. Make space for yourself. . . I appreciate all the love and support and indignation sent my way over this latest racial joke debacle. I’m gratified and reassured that I can still be included in cosplay as a person of color, and that to most people, race jokes wouldn’t even occur to them. . . That said, this kind of thing happens more than I can put into words. Every event I’ve been to, most every cosplay I’ve done, I get some comment or another about my race. . . As an Asian woman, society taught me to be small, not to make a fuss, to put others comfort ahead of my own, to be convenient and consumable. When people made jokes about my Asian features, I’d laugh as best I could, and hurry away at the first chance. I’m done with that. I’m done with making people feel comfortable about their prejudice. . . Living in New York, I found that the only way to ride comfortably on the subway between two manspreaders was to lean back, take a deep breath, and expand into my space until they were forced to give me room. I’m going to do that in my life too, not just on the subway, and I encourage everyone, women and POCs in particular, to do the same. . . This time, I called that person out for their comment. I was fair and calm, I don’t want to be rude, but I will not compromise my point to make others feel comfortable with their prejudices. . . Stand up to people when they make you uncomfortable. Call them out on their prejudices and microaggressions, even if it makes them uncomfortable, because we deserve space too. PSA: a person’s race isn’t a joke. Joking about people’s race isn’t funny or clever, I’ve heard it before, I’ve heard worse, and I’ve heard more imaginative. . . Here’s a little lesson: in a study conducted at USC’s Annenberg School, researchers found, of more than 800 recent Hollywood films, Asians represent only 1% of leading roles. Of the top 100 films in 2015, half did not include named or speaking roles for Asian characters. Asians comprise 3.9% of characters, so if I’m only allowed to cosplay Asian characters, well slim pickings, kids. . . When you joke about a person of color cosplaying a white character, you imply that people of color will always be a pantomime caricature, that our race makes us a humorous little aside, no matter what we do. It doesn’t matter that Padmé was the work of 2 years. It doesn’t matter that I taught myself hand dyeing, thermoplastic, and patterning to create a screen accurate cosplay. When you call me Queen Asiandala (can’t forget the 🤣🤣) you reduce all that work to a pre-1960’s racial slapstick, where people of color are bought and billed as entertainment for a white audience. . . If you wouldn’t say it to a white cosplayer, don’t say it to a person of color. White cosplayers dress as characters of color with impunity. To say that cosplayers of color cannot dress as white characters, that that road doesn’t go both ways, is a retrenchment of the neocolonial leeway for white people to appropriate space, culture, even other humans from the nonwhite world, but that people of color have to stay in their place, in the neat little box that makes you comfortable. . . My race is not a joke, it’s not clever or amusing or even new. I’m not overly sensitive. I didn’t take your joke the wrong way.
