Alphys and Mettaton EX in the Wolf3D boss style. These aren't for anything in particular, I just thought it was a funny idea.

If Doom (1993) was made now, I bet the soundtrack would sound like ULTRAKILL's.

wolfalt.wad: wolfalt MAP01 (-3904, 1608, 0) Author: Chris Shepardson Date: 1995-04-05 Description: This was has been designed using the 1st level of the wolfenstein 3d as played in doom2, level31 While the layout of the map has remained basically unchanged, creatures from doom2, as well as varied hights in levels, stairs, lightin and textures have been added to give it the look of an updated Wolf3d level. All the secrets have been kept, as well as adding new ones (can you find the plasma rifle?) THe level will support deathmatch and cooperative battles, but was meant to be a single player level. I have so far found no problems. If you have any comments let me know.

DAWN 3D - a Dusk mod for Doom [GZ, Zand] v0.99
Description:
A few days ago I started this new side project, a not-so-faithful adaptation of DUSK for GZDoom and Zandronum that aims to have a more classic 2D sprite look (the 3D in the name is semi-ironic as well as a nod to Duke3D and Wolf3D, which had sprites and not models), for now some features are sort-of missing like dual wield weapons and a more Superhot-like timestop, and I've taken a few creative liberties as well, I also have a Heretic patch planned for the future, the mod should also work on Deathmatch gamemodes and multiplayer but that hasn't been fully tested outside of offline skirmishes with bots, future updates will add some cut content and balance the mod more.

Here's a blast from the past. I played a lot of Doom growing up but my first FPS was a game called Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold.
Back in the early 90's common home computers couldn't render a true 3D environment very well so ID Software developed a game program that would give the illusion of 3D by putting you in a first person perspective.
Their first big hit was Wolfenstein 3D which was a re-imagining Castle Wolfenstein which was a stealth game from the 80's. ID wanted to implement a bunch of the stealth elements like hiding bodies and disguising yourself in enemy uniforms but they decided the game worked better as a run and gun. The story was that you were an American spy being held prisoner in a Nazi castle during WWII and you had to fight your way out.
When Wolf3D came out in spring of 1993 it was a huge hit. Other game developers started coming up with a bunch of "wolf clones" that used the same basic software with different graphics and audio and a different "story" to suit whatever setting they want. I put "story" in quotes because video games of the time tended to give you a little lore on a text file but you didn't get much of a progressing story line as you played.
So Apogee Software (Later known as 3D Realms) made Blake Stone, a game about a British intelligence agent who flies around in space destroying armies of human guards, robots, and mutants. The game added a lot of innovative features over the original Wolfenstein.
Blake Stone added a map feature that let you see where you were going, where you've been, and make some guesses of where you can find hidden secrets.
Where everything that moves in Wolfenstein was your enemy there were some NPCs in Blake Stone that were somewhat passive. Some will offer advice and even give you stuff while others will threaten and attack you if you talk to them.
The guns in wolfenstein just fired progressively faster with no other real use. In Blake Stone we started seeing some versatility such as a silenced pistol for stealth kills, machine guns having better penetration to destroy ceiling turrets, and an energy grenade launcher that deals splash damage. For that matter Wolf 3D didn't have splash damage at all so that was another innovation.
Blake Stone also introduced a rudimentary currency system where you could collect tokens and use them in vending machines.
One of my favorite features was that you could return to previously completed levels if you wanted to look for more treasure or if you were REALLY desperate for supplies.
Unfortunately Blake Stone wasn't a very big hit because just one week after it came out ID Software would release Doom which came with a whole new software engine that was even bigger and badder. Moving forward the market would see a bunch of Doom clones essentially leaving the Wolfenstein engine obsolete. Still for what Blake Stone did with such a basic engine was impressive for it's day.

Hey, how come even though we had a (FULLY FUNCTIONAL!) official sourceport for DOOM/DOOM II that id Software decided wasn't good enough, we still haven't gotten any official sourceport for Wolf3D? (I'd ask for a remaster/re-release/sourceport for Commander Keen, but that ain't fucking happening anytime soon. I think modern id Software wants us to forget about Keen)
I dunno, maybe it's because id Software doesn't have any current plans for the Wolfenstein franchise, but, Wolf3D is just as much an important piece of video game history as DOOM & Quake are, even if it's much less technically impressive than even those two are today.
