Some Drow Poisons and Their Effects
The link is here: http://www.candlekeep.com/library/articles/poison.htm
Velkyn Ogglin (“Invisible Foe”)
This rare poison is taken from the toxin sacs of the uncommon *dakhree* fish that swims in certain Underdark lakes. The brewer must remove the sacs with gloves on his hands if he wishes to avoid being poisoned himself. The sacs are located all over the fish's six-inch body, and are tiny, requiring a steady hand and delicacy to remove effectively, hence the rarity. The dakhree fish hunts by rubbing against its prey, releasing the toxin onto its victim. On most fish, the effect is instantaneous, though humanoids take longer. At the time of onset, the poison causes the victim to convulse as the potent substance attacks his nervous system. The victim begins grand mal seizures and suffers spinal damage, his back arching and twisting violently as his body jerks involuntarily.
(This poison is probably (definitely) based on ‘Nux Vomica’, more colloquially known as ‘Strychnine’.)
Khaless (“Trust”)
This is the famous sleep-poison of the drow, used on their crossbow bolts to immobilize an enemy so that he can be killed at leisure. The active ingredient comes from the spores of the oloth'arr mushroom. While the mushroom itself is fairly common, harvesting the spores is not an effortless chore. Still, it is common enough to be almost trademark. The poison attacks the central nervous system, causing the victim to fall asleep.
(Probably based on Opium Poppies)
Belbol d’Elghinn (“Gift of Death”)
This powerful poison, greatly prized by drow nobles for assasination, is also known as Elash Elghinn, "Silent Death", after the venomous water serpent of the same name. The venom takes effect immediatelty, causing damage to the victim's blood vessels and causing dramatic and extensive hemorrhaging. Within minutes, the victim will gush blood from his mouth, eyes, nose and ears. He will have time to develop bruises all over his body before he mercifully dies. Drow find death caused by this venom to be particularly entertaining. However, there are certain individuals who seem to be immune to Belbol d'Elghinn, and upon whom it has no effect at all. However, when it does work it causes a spectacular (if regrettably short) show.
(Definitely based on Boomslang venom. Also the practice of taking self-administered and non-lethal doses of poisons to build immunity is called Mithridatism.)
Orbb’st Ssrin (“Spider’s Kiss”)
This poison is brewed from venoms of five different spiders. As all spiders are sacred to Lolth, the venoms must be carefully harvested without killing the spiders. All of the spiders used are huge in size, allowing for more easy harvest of the venom. The collected venoms are then dried to a powder and added to a strongly-flavored food or drink, as it does have a slight sour taste. The poison causes chills, fever and prostration for several hours, and, if not halted by a neutralize poison spell, does permanent damage to the body's immune system. This makes the victim more susceptible to disease and poison in the future
(Gonna guess and say a combo of bites from a Brown Recluse, Noble False Widow, Hobo Spider (and two other non lethal but painful types). I haven’t included the Black Widow in the list or the Funnel Web because their bites would be much worse than just causing sepsis.)
Golhyrr del’Ilharess (“Trap of the Matron”)
This poison is the flesh of the rare krashyll mushroom. Successful administering of this poison to one's enemies is seen as quite a victory of cuel'a'cul (the drow ritual of slowly, over time, destroying one's enemy while remaining blameless). It must be given in six stages, its poison slowly building in the body, in doses no more than a two tendays apart. Since drow are a suspicious race, it is easy to see why success with this poison is greatly admired, worthy of the twisted, centuries-long plots of the Matron Mothers. It's name also suggests that it requires the power and subtlety of a Matron Mother to use effectively. After administering the sixth dose, death will strike its victim in half an hour, causing the throat to suddenly close up in massive anaphylactic shock. The victim dies of asphyxiation within minutes.
(The two best known cumulative poisons are mercury and lead. Others are PCBs (which can accumulate in fish fat and skin) and dioxins (which can be formed from burning wood, oil, fuel etc and can infect meat).)

CHAPTER FOUR
Noa studied the spring-green eladri as they cast a spell, calling light out of the air. Noa wished she had the innate magical abilities that most of the denizens of the Realm of Light had, if only just to look as beautiful as Diumer did casting their spell. Magic washed over the elven face like bliss. The light shivered through the space between Diumer, Noa, and Velkyn before settling on the right wrists of both Noa and Velkyn. With one great exhale, the light faded and twin silver tattoos linked the human girl and drow boy.
“I still think this is bullshit,” Velkyn scowled as Diumer opened their eyes. He lifted his right wrist, and the intertwining silver tattoo lines shimmered as if they were real metal, reminiscent of a manacle, but prettier.
Diumer flashed their hypnotic smile at the linked pair, and said, “As the two of you can’t seem to get along-” interrupted by Noa’s protests.
“Hey, he was gonna kill me yesterday!”
“And you thought the best course of action was to double down and try to kill him?” The electric blue eyes made Noa uncomfortable. She looked down at her feet.
“I suppose pushing Val off into the river wasn’t the answer…” she replied, and softly added, “But it was funny.”
The drow scowled at her and said, “My name is Valeraelio Velkyn Vaundrey, and I swear on my proud name that death is too sweet for you; I will spend this shared time making you miserable!”
“Yeah, try your best, Val,” she snarled. Velkyn made a fist and tried to move toward her.
“Please, young people, try to get along. Especially now that you are bonded.” “Thanks for that,” both Noa and Velkyn snarked at the eladri.
Distinguished Diumer smiled as bright as the sunlight streaking through the trees. “This bond ensures that whatever pain one of you encounters, the other will share. Perhaps you two will learn empathy for one another while you literally feel each other's pain.” The drow snorted. Diumer fixed an electric gaze on Velkyn and added, "As long as you stop trying to kill one another, your time here will be peaceful."
"Do we get the injuries too?" Noa asked, studying her own encircling tattoo.
"No, young one. Only your physical pain is linked."
“Wonderful,” Noa scowled.
“Any other enlightening information?” Velkyn asked, arms crossed, hood low over his temple.
The eladri’s eyes twinkled. “It is a bond. Broken only when you want to keep it,” and both human and drow glowered at the cryptic comment. Diumer turned to leave the clearing, but stopped. “Oh yes, and the further apart you are, the more uncomfortable the magic link will become.”
A moment passed as the two youths processed the implications of their magical manacles. “You suck,” Velkyn stated.
“Yeah! I mean no disrespect, Distinguished Diumer,” Noa chimed in, “but this is stupid. Why should we try to get along? He literally tried to kill me twice!”
Diumer closed their eyes in thought for a moment before replying, “Learning to get along is how the two of you can repay me for keeping you out of jail.” With that, the quilt-like cloak swished as Diumer left the youths standing dumbfounded.
Feeling slightly dizzy and deranged from the drastic shift of her life, Noa pinched herself in the arm, hard. As she did so, Velkyn gasped and moved his hand to the corresponding spot on his arm. “What the shit?!” he cursed.
“Seriously? You felt that?”
Velkyn snarled, “Fool! We just finished hearing about how our pain is linked. How has someone as dense as you survived this long?”
“No thanks to you. Why were you even throwing knives in that bar?”
Velkyn bent down to fix the lace of one of his boots as he slowly replied, “That night was my first time in the Realm of Light, and I was looking to establish myself.”
“By killing someone?”
“It would’ve established me as a villain, wouldn’t it?” Velkyn said with an evil glint in his silver eyes. As he stood, he produced a knife from his boot.
Noa took a sudden breath and felt her heart begin to speed up in her chest. “I thought they took your dagger yesterday…” Noa managed to say as she started to back up.
Brandishing the blade and taking a step forward, he whispered, “They did,” and lunged!
Faster than the sunlight he reflected in her eyes, Velkyn closed the distance in one heartbeat, knife bared. He crashed into Noa, pressing her back against a tree, dagger at her throat. Noa stared wide-eyed at the hood-darkened features sneering at her.
“You are a pathetic child, and I won’t let you slow me down,” he hissed, pressing the blade hard against Noa’s throat. A drop of blood welled up. “I have endured pain beyond anything you could imagine,” his warm exhale pushed the blood down Noa’s neck. He pressed harder still, and she held her breath, head growing dizzy. “Keep up, or get out of my way.”
Feeling like her head was about to pop off, Noa jerked her knee up into his crotch and immediately regretted it. Both Noa and Velkyn pulled away and fell to the mossy ground, curling up and groaning. She breathed through the pain, both her own and Velkyn’s, before she noticed someone standing over them both.
The figure had hands on hips, and said in a low voice, “What in forsaken worlds are you two doing?!” The large humanoid stood a head and a half taller than Noa, had sharp yellow eyes, and broad shoulders made of solid muscle. "Distinguished Diumer suggested I check in on you young folk, being that you just had yourselves a binding, but damn! Already back to trying to kill each other?"
Velkyn was first on his feet, breathless but confident. “Just… setting some boundaries,” he said between breaths.
“Is that another knife?” the newcomer blustered. Noa tried to remember his names, but couldn't think through the pain. The hairy humanoid with three long braids held out a meaty hand to Velkyn. “Give it ‘ere, c’mon now.” Reluctantly, the drow placed the blade on the other’s palm. The bubu man nodded. “Alright, go and get yerselves some lunch,” he said with his husky voice. “Maybe you’ll be less cranky,” he added, and mumbled, “and maybe I’ll tell Jen not to put out any knives…”
The hairy bubu man began to walk away, and Noa carefully got to her feet. Velkyn trudged past her, and with a smirk whispered, “I have three more knives.”
After the drow was gone, Noa sighed and wiped the blood from her neck with one hand. Her other hand was still in her pocket, gripping the small pistol tightly.

Get to Know the Author
@bosstoaster has been tagging me all night :P
1. How did you come up with your username and what does it mean?
I’ve had the name ‘Karma’ for about 17 years now? I don’t even remember where it came from. The ‘Velkyn’ got added a little over 10 years ago when I decided I wanted to get back into fic writing. But I was still in that phase where you think you’re supposed to ‘grow out’ of fandoms and writing fanfiction, so I didn’t want any of my friends to know I was doing it. I was embarrassed. It was silly. I picked a different handle, VelkynKarma, which actually means ‘hidden Karma.’ Later I just liked the name and also got over my embarrassment for fic writing and just started using it everywhere.
2. Which fanfic of yours has the most feedback? (bookmarks/subscriptions/hits/kudos).
No matter what statistic you look at, Routine Maintenance wins across the board by a large margin. Parasite Knight only has 1 less subscription, though, so I guess it’s a fair contender on subs.
3. What is your AO3 profile icon, and why did you choose it?
Same as my tumblr icon, it’s one of my OC’s, Morrigu Lovel. He is a little smartass and I love him.
4. Do you have any regular/favourite commenters?
Oh for sure, there’s a few lovely readers that come back every time and always have something to say. I love you guys :) And a few others that don’t comment on every chapter or every work, but the comments they leave are always phenomenal and make my day.
5. Is there a fanfic that you keep going back to read again and again?
Depends on my mood, and I don’t necessarily read the entire fic, just the paragraphs/scenes/chapters that really stick out to me. But yeah, I’ve got some favorites I return to a lot.
6. How many stories are you subscribed to? How many do you have bookmarked?
Oh geez. This one’s hard to say since I watch stuff on AO3 and FF.net. A lot? I think a lot of those fics are dead now though.
7. Which AU do you find yourself writing the most?
Mmmm I don’t really have a tendency to stick to any particular series or AU for very long? I guess in terms of general themes I’ve done zombie AU’s the most, between Age of Heroes for Young Justice and Road Trip to End Times for Voltron...something about zombie apocalypse scenarios just fascinates me, especially since it can be done so many different ways.
8. How many people are subscribed and bookmarked to you in total? (you can view this on the stats page)
252 user subs, 444 work subs, 2039 bookmarks. I didn’t even know that until now, huh
9. Is there something you’d like to write about but are afraid of people judging you for it? (Feeling brave? If so, share it!)
There’s some character interactions that are such hot-button topics in the VLD fandom I’m cautious about approaching them because I don’t want to deal with people complaining or begging for things to get escalated. Like, I love Keith and Lance’s interactions in canon, but don’t have much fic centered around them because ship lashback is real.
10. Is there anything you would like to be better at? Writing certain scenes or genres, replying to comments, updating better, etc.
Short fic. What is brevity even? I can’t do zines or commissions because I can’t figure out how to manage a damn word count.
11. Do you write rarepairs or popular ships more often?
Nope! I don’t write any ships at all. I just write platonic interaction. Though I guess I wouldn’t be adverse to a platonic ‘rarepair’ as long as I liked the characters’ interaction potential.
12. How many stories have you posted on AO3 to this day (finished and unfinished)?
So far, 25. 23 of those are Voltron, 1 is Young Justice, and 1 is Supernatural (experimenting with cross-posting on both of those last two, some fandoms are just hard to break into or not on certain sites).
13. How many stories do you have saved in/with your writing program?
Oh boy. In progress? I wanna say 3. Notes? A lot, lot more.
14. Do you write down story ideas, or just keep them in your head?
I jot down notes! Or email myself ideas if I’m at work/out and about. Or speak them into a little portable digital tape recorder I keep next to my bed, if it’s the middle of the night and I have an idea, but lack dexterity to type.
15. Have you ever co-authored a story?
Not in a long, looong time.
16. How did you discover AO3?
Through TVTropes. Every time I finished a new series I’d swing by to read tropes pages and see if there were any decent fic recs. At first they all went to Fanfiction.net or livejournal but, over time, this ‘Archive’ thing kept showing up. I made an account to lurk or subscribe to things but didn’t actually start posting to it until at least a year later.
17. Do you consider yourself to be a popular or famous author in your fandom(s) on AO3?
Moderately well known in the platonic corner of it probably assuming people know bosstoaster and I are not actually the same person lol but probably not well known outside of that. Once upon a time I was a Big Name in the One Piece fandom, but after the timeskip I fell out of the fandom and lost my pirate king throne. That’s okay, it was fun while it lasted.
18. Do you have a nickname or fandom name for your readers?
No but you all are too kind
19. Was there an author who inspired or encouraged you to write?
In terms of ‘official’ authors, Brandon Sanderson is everything I ever aspire to be as a writer, and I take a lot of inspiration from that. For fic? My buddy BlackFriar was super helpful during the Young Justice era. More recently in the VLD fandom, @maychorian was big for just...getting me to stay in the fandom at all? One of her fics got me hooked and I stuck around, and then felt compelled to write, instead of just drifting off to the next interesting thing. And the Think Tank ( @bosstoaster @butteredonions @ashinan @mumblefox ) have all been huge for getting me to keep writing, between writing sprints and interesting discussions and a lot of encouragement, so that’s been huge for me this past year.
20. What writing advice would you give to a beginning author?
At the risk of sounding like that one video...just do it. It’s scary to put yourself out there, but just do it. You learn by doing. You also learn by absorbing new things around you, so read a lot and try new stuff; you never know when something completely random or a personal experience might actually add a lot to your story. And finally, write for you, first. Write the stories you want to see. Writing for comments/bookmarks/reblogs only goes so far. It means your motivation is reliant solely on people liking your work, which means you start writing for other people and not for yourself...and if reception is lackluster, it can kill your ability to finish a project, which hurts your practice at follow-through. It’s a slippery slope and starts to make the whole thing a lot less fun and a lot more of a chore. Write things you want to read, and if you feel like sharing them after, other people might like them too, but it’s important that you like it, first.
21. Do you plot out your stories, or do you just figure it out as you go?
Has to be plotted completely. If I try to wing it I meander or get hung up on trying to keep track of details. Turns into total garbage.
22. Have you ever gotten a bad comment on a story? If so, what did you do?
A few times, sure. Happens to everyone. Most often, it’s people begging, demanding, or insinuating that my platonic fics should include a ship, especially if the fic focuses on the interactions of two specific characters. Those are very frustrating because I’m always upfront about the fic being friendship only, and there are usually a million other ship fics already out there. Leave my platonic fic alone! I usually ignore the comments, or just politely remind people it’s friendship only and will remain that way. In one bewildering instance in a different fandom I had somebody who had been thoroughly enjoying the fic up until the climactic battle, whereupon they were furious at how it was resolved, and took great pains to tell me just what they thought. That one stung. I had to sit on it for a few days before I worked up the nerve to respond, and chatted with a few friends over it too. In the end I realized that it was more comparable to a fan really enjoying a canon work but being mad about a sudden twist that just didn’t seem right to them. It happens. I thanked them for reading, explained that I disagreed with their comments but did hear them, and thanked them for their time. Best I could do.
23. Is there a certain type of scene that you have a hard time writing? (action, smut, etc..)
I am straight-up incapable of romance, period. Even so far as to slide into ‘fake’ romance (I once got prompted for fake marriage/dating and literally couldn’t envision how to do it? It’s just so foreign to me). Or flirting. I can’t even identify flirting IRL. Basically anything in that general area of writing is completely out of my league. I can write intense scenes that are intimate in non-romantic, non-sexual ways, but those are really difficult for me to do too and I’m constantly second-guessing myself in case it’s maybe too much.
24. What story(s) are you working on now?
If I told you I’d have to kill you. But no, srsly, I don’t like to share ideas in progress until it’s almost done, just in case. Sometimes I share and then immediately lose interest, but I’ve already raised peoples’ hopes, and that’s just a dick move.
25. Do you plan your next project(s) before you finish your current ongoing story(s)?
I’ll have outlines, or sometimes need to plan around prompts. I don’t usually do series, so I never really need to plan too far ahead though. Sometimes if I’m plotting a crossover/AU I’ll obtain the source material and read/watch/play it to start gathering notes for that fic while working on a different fic, so that by the time I’m done writing the current story, the AU’s skeleton is plotted out and I have a place to slot in all the characters.
26. Do you have a daily writing goal set for yourself?
No. I’ve gotten better habits since working with the Think Tank but I still tend to be more of a ‘burst’ writer (no activity for days or weeks, and then suddenly word vomiting 100K in a month).
27. Do you think you’ve improved as a writer since you first started?
By a HUGE margin
28. What is your favorite story that you’ve written?
Oooh, that’s a toss-up between Phantasmagoria and Prince of Memory. The former because I love writing horror and it’s an idea I’d wanted to tackle for a while. The latter because it was a personal writing challenge to myself that I honestly wasn’t sure was going to go over all that well, but the response was stunning, and I was quietly surprised.
29. What is your least favorite story that you’ve written?
Caged Bird, from a different fandom. I make it a personal rule to never delete stories that I’ve posted, but ooh man, I wanted to get rid of this one really bad. I was happy when LJ gutted it. I actually don’t have any real dislike for any of my Voltron stuff.
30. Where do you see yourself (as a writer) in 5 years?
Still writing because I’d die if I stopped. Like a shark. But with writing.
31. What is the easiest thing about writing?
That flash of inspiration, when you get an idea and suddenly it’s building itself almost too fast for you to keep up. Dialogue. Action sequences.
32. What is the hardest thing about writing?
Getting started. Titles. Editing. Research. Any particularly emotional moment.
33. Why do you write?
Because fandoms are fun but I have so many questions after. “What if X happened? What if Y was a factor? Why not Z?” I try to hunt down answers to these questions in fandoms and if the fic isn’t already written, I write it. Also to challenge myself to do things that haven’t been done in the fandom yet, or to tackle things I haven’t tried yet.
I think everyone’s been tagged already so...feel free to play if you want, I guess!

for the GW2 ask thingy. 1,2, 4, 5, 789, 101112, 20,21, 24, 25, 31,32,33,34, 48.
*cracks knuckles* Alrighty! Here we go!
1. Fave race? Sylvari, always. I’m completely enchanted by them, and relate most with them.
2. Fave profession? Tempest. I’ve always loved the instant versatility of elementalists, but when they added the Tempest elite specialization, it knocked that class out of the ball park.
4. Least fave race? It’s a tie between Charr and Humans. Charr can be frustratingly unnecessarily aggressive and cranky. And humans. Humans are really cranky in GW2 too, which they have a lot of reasons too, but I hate playing cranky characters because it rubs off on me. X) 5. Least fave profession? That’s actually kind of hard, I love each profession for different reasons, but perhaps warrior? Only because my warrior is the only class that I haven’t had time to level to 80 and learn how to use yet, but I have a feeling that I’m going to like Berserker too when I get there.
7. Your first character’s name? My first character is currently named Tealandra Swiftstep, though she was originally named Vanyliel. I changed her name when I start RP’ing because she looks vastly different from my main (Tempest Vanaliel) and I wanted to use her to RP as her own character.
8. Your first character’s race? Sylvari, naturally. I fell in love with GW2 when I asked my husband to make a character on his account, then go through the story and tell it to me. So he sat me down and let me do the character creation, which launched me directly into the sylvari opening story, and I wouldn’t him have his game back until we bought me my own account that same night. I haven’t put the game down since.
9. Your first character’s profession?Ranger/Druid, and the poor girl has been left to the wayside since I discovered elementalist. Rangers are just incredibly boring to play compared to the other professions, in my own opinion.
10. Your main character’s name? Vanaliel. I like to keep things simple lol. I made her to replace my ranger and cranky human elementalist and be the character closest to myself. She has since evolved from that into more of her own person.
11. Your main character’s race? Sylvari
12. Your main character’s profession? Tempest! Woot! She has full ascended zerker’s gear and hits like a truck. That’s on fire. An oil tanker that’s on fire. I’ve also recently made a mesmer version of her for her personal storyline. I plan on building mesmer Vani as a glass cannon too because I enjoy the ‘kill everything faster than they can kill me’ approach to gameplay.
20. Your favorite map?Ooh another hard question, GW2 is just such a beautiful game. I love Auric Basin, but I think Tangled Depths is starting to be my new favorite as I start to learn how to navigate it. I just love how much there is to Tangled Depths. It’s easy to loose yourself and I feel there’s always more to explore.
21. Your favorite major city?I think The Grove is the prettiest, but I enjoy being in Divinity’s Reach most. It feels the most like a city with all of the streets and alleyways, and there are always roleplay going on so it feels the most alive, even if I’m too shy to engage in the RP in DR cuz people tend to get a little nuts or too serious there.
24. How many alts do you have? I have a total of 12 characters. 2 versions of Vanaliel, 4 other sylvari, 3 humans, 1 norn, 1 charr, 1 asura, and at least one of each class.
25. How many level 80′s do you have? 9/12 are level 80. The last three are mesmer Vani, who’s level 52, my sylvari warrior (20), and my second human guardian (20) who I just made as a snarky butler to a friend’s loveably snarky noble. Bonus: Faceshots of all of my characters, they are:Vani (dps tempest and mesmer), Daedrimir (chronomancer), Captain Shayza (scrapper), Duskaiah Sunheart (herald), Lily Vanderhol (healer tempest), Nikita Winterfrost (theif), Zazirin Nightshade (Necro), Wintson Pierce (guardian), Tealandra Swiftstep (druid), Velkyn Winnryder (guardian), Gedonnis (warrior)
31. Your favorite character from personal story?Magister Seiran and Warmaster Forgal are in a tie.
32. Your favorite character from Living Story & HoT?Taimi :) She’s adorable, competent, sweet, optimistic, clever, and funny, all in one tiny lovable package.
33. Your favorite ship?I think the general Trahearne/the Commander ship is cute, but otherwise I stick more to shipping people’s OC’s. X)
34. Have you ever cried because of the story?YES. I cried about Seiran, Forgal, and Trehearne. I then cried again over a private RP about a ship between Trahearne and a sweet OC non-commander sylvari girl and what happened when Trahearne didn’t come back. *gets a shaky bottom lip thinking about all of these beloved characters*
48. Post last screen you took in game. I cheated a little cuz the actual last screenshot I took was of a chat log of both an in-depth conversation with a talented friend, and of a cute RP moment with another guild mate. I take a lot of those cuz I love to go back and read through them and possibly reference them for story journals. Instead, you get this one, which I grabbed really quick during guild missions yesterday when I realized just how beautiful Langmar’s Estate is. You also get an action shot of Shikaah!
Thank you so much for the ask!

//So, I made my muses on a dollmaker instead of doing productive things XD Or, most of them, at least. I tried to make Wax but there weren’t any sideburns??? So that was a deal breaker.
On a slightly related note, I’m thinking of adding in 2-3 new characters on here. 1 OC and 1-2 Canon characters from the Kingkiller Chronicle? So there’s that possibility.
