notes: I included characters explicitly stated or heavily implied to be something other than human (vampire, etc.), therefore, for example, no witches (pannochka/the sotnik's daughter qualifies because of being undead)

The famous Japanese manga artist Mizuki Shigeru is one of the creators influenced by Gogol's short novel Viy and it's movie adaptation,he created a short horror manga "Dead Man's Possession"(死人つき) adapted from it in 1964,and that manga was further adapted into the two episodes of Gegege no Kitaro anime season 2 and 5.Dead Man's Possession describes a monk's experience during a vigil in a temple, the overall story is almost the same as the original:During three nights a dead women will come back to life and attack the monk along with other monsters, while he surrounds himself with a magic circle on the ground until the rooster crows that turns the women back into corpses.
Pannochka the witch from VIY and the dead women from 死人つき
Viy,the most important monster in the original, was replaced with an approximation of Japan yokai appearance in Mizuki's works. It has a single eye with thick eyelid which looks a bit like the yokai Hitotsume-kozo(一つ目小僧).Another difference from the original work is that the resurrected woman is not a witch, but is possessed by a yokai called Moryo(魍魎).It's a collective term for spirits and yokai, but also refers to a yokai that steals and eats the internal organs of human corpses like Kasha(火車)(Therefore there's an opinion that both have a evolutionary relationship in the culture),maybe that's why Mizuki chose to replace the plot of "woman resurrected for revenge as a witch" with possession by Moryo.
Viy from the movie and Mizuki's manga
The episodes adapted from 死人つき in Gegege no Kitaro season 2 and 5.
The famous mystery novelist Kyogoku Natsuhiko also wrote a novel with the theme of Moryo,Moryo no Hako. This story explores the boundaries between life and death in a disturbing way,and the possibility of human beings entering "the other world".Moryo isn't an entity, but a cultural concept proposed by the protagonist Kyogokudo to symbolize a specific phenomenon or psychological state, and the object it "possesses" is not dead bodies but minds of living people.Gegege no Kitaro s6e78 is also used Moryo as the monster of the week,in addition to elements from Dead Man's Possession,it's not difficult to find that a certain character's experience and relationship with the dead were inspired by that novel.

Horror Movie of the day: Viy (1967)
Few stories are said to spread terror among Cossack people like the one of the Viy: in a convent there’s a fairly misbehaved seminary student called Khoma Brutus. Nicknamed “the philosopher” to mock his lack of wisdom, his drunken ways get him lost one night in the middle of the grassy fields. When he tries to sleep at the stables of the distant farm, he managed to get refuge at, he’s met by a hag with magical powers. Managing to survive this encounter by beating the witch to near death with a stick, her real form is revealed to be a beautiful young woman, which makes Khoma run away in a fit of panic.
The next morning, the convent Rector calls for him. A rich man from a distant farm solicits his specific services. His daughter, who's on the verge of death, called him by name so he could pray for her dying soul for three nights.
Three nights he must stay alone with the witch's body in the chapel.
For being probably the only gothic horror film to ever come out of Soviet Russia, Aleksandr Ptushko’s mastery of fantasy imagery certainly puts the film on the same caliber as some of the best work of Mario Bava or Hammer productions. Between the painterly composition, exquisitely haunting color palette of ghastly blues, and outstanding visual effects it brings Nikolai Gogol's eponymous folkloric tale to life in a way that over 60 years later is still visually captivating.
Leonid Kuravlyov's performance as bumbling, humorously pathetic yet relatable Khoma certainly adds quite the human touch to this story of hubris and the supernatural; which starts slow but ramps up once the prayers start, culminating in a delightful nightmare of imaginative fantasy creatures lead by Natalya Varley's equally fantastic portrayal of Pannochka the witch.
A fairly overlooked gem, it's a must watch if you enjoy dark fairytales and colorful approaches to horror. Light in violence, but very creative in the audiovisual experience.

OH random thought but i forgot to mention it on here: made a sideblog separate from my normal one here so that im not constantly spamming my various 'inspiration' type posts on my regular blog and so that i can have a way more detailed tagging system for myself to refer to as far as what the inspirations of the post are to me, colors that stand out, art, photography, fashion etc etc, im still absolutely gonna post & reblog a lot of that on here too i just wanted a more organized space for whenever i wanna look at cool stuff and feel inspired or need creative motivation and all that.
the url is @carmillapannochka (named after two of my fave undead characters of course, Carmilla The Lesbian Vampire and Pannochka The Witch Who Looks Eerily Similar To Me Irl From The Movie Viy. lol); it's essentially for my own creative inspiration purposes but if you like artsy type creative inspiration blogs/moodboards/pages etc you are more than welcome to follow it too! eventually im gonna give it a proper desktop blog theme (i've done everything for it on my app so far) and probably make a pinned post as a sort of tag system index but right now i'm mostly spending a lil bit of time whenever i feel like it reblogging a bunch of stuff from my years worth of 'inspiration' tags on here over to that blog too, so its probably gonna be kinda spammy for a while, but. anyways ya that is all ok goodbye have a nice day i love u

Viy (1967) - Episode 64 - Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
“I summon the vampires! I summon the werewolves!... I summon Viy!” You’d think spending three nights with a witch's corpse would be enough of a trial. Join this episode’s Grue Crew - Chad Hunt, Whitney Collazo, and Jeff Mohr along with special guest Doc Rotten - for a trip to Ukraine to take in Viy (1967), the Russian, folk-horror classic based on a Nikolai Gogol tale.
Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Episode 64 – Viy (1967)

Your Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Grue-Crew has been trying to cover Viy for 2 years. When it finally showed up on the Shudder streaming service and a new Blu-ray was issued by Severin, they knew the time had come. The Blu-ray and Shudder streaming picture quality far exceed that previously available. Their general recommendation is you should see this film!
Doc tipped off the Grue-Crew to this film so it seems only natural that he join them to discuss Viy and he goes into detail about his love for the film. From beginning to end, he is fascinated by the culture, the Gogol-created folklore, the cinematography, the special effects, and the unique visuals present in Viy. Whitney is entranced by the magical quality of the film and admits she sometimes gets sucked-in by stories built around witches and folk tales. Chad really, really, really, really loves this film and his interest was aroused by the framework of the lead character having to spend 3 days locked in a church with a witches’ corpse. He also dives into Gogol’s source story and its genesis. Viy is a must-own for Jeff, having stayed up late into the night on the release date to be sure to get a copy of Severin’s new Blu-ray edition. The entire Grue-Crew discusses the escalation of the witch’s efforts over the three days and what they liked about each day.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era is part of the Decades of Horror 3-week rotation with the 1970s and 1980s. In three weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be The Body Snatcher (1945), a Val Lewton production directed by Robert Wise and starring Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, and Henry Daniell.
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans: leave them a message or leave a comment on the site or email the Decades of Horror: The Classic Era podcast hosts at [email protected]
To each of you from each of us, “Thank you so much for listening!”
