Another piece of lost Old Salem history. This empty lot, which is now a garden, at the intersection of East Bank Street and South Church Street was the location of the house of Frederick Belo's daughter (circled area on the map). Which daughter, I do not know. Frederick Belo is known for building the Fredrick Belo house back in 1849 and 1860, which is located at 455 South Main Street. His daughter's house, third photo, was built circa 1895. Unfortunately, his daughter's house was demolished back in the late 1990s. This is the photograph that the fractal fabric/textile printing was based on: the 9ft x 4ft mural “The Creation of Man” painted on neon velvet and Installed at Kindred Spirits

The fractal of the above photo was printed by a small batch company in Durham. I had wanted to try fabric reproduction for a while, but had never been given the chance. I thought the colors were so vibrant! When I’m reproducing some aspect of my art, I like to use that as an opportunity to rethink the image. In this case, I wanted to create something abstract and something incredibly detailed. I consider myself something of a realist surrealist if you know what I’m saying 😮‍💨

This past weekend we were visiting with family in North Carolina and took a late afternoon stroll through Old Salem Museum & Gardens in Winston-Salem. This is the John Vogler House, which was built in 1819. It was built in imitation of the many fine examples of Federal style architecture John Vogler had seen on occasional trips to and from Pennsylvania. Vogler, born in 1783, became known as the most talented silversmith in Salem (he also repaired clocks but did not make this his primary occupation, since he would have been in direct competition with Lewis Eberhardt). The prominent hood over the main entrance contains a painted clockface, which was Vogler’s trademark. John Vogler died as a widower in 1881. The home remained in the Vogler family until it was given to Old Salem, Inc. in 1952 by Vogler’s great granddaughter, Pauline Bahnson Gray.
