The Autonomous Flying Boars: Toph, Opal, and the Meaning of Freedom

I think there’s a more profound point as to why Toph likes Opal a bit more than her other grandchildren—Opal, in particular, is the most liberated from the Beifong legacy, both figuratively and literally.

Baatar Jr. was always weighed down by the expectations of his parents, Suyin and Baatar Sr., and that eventually pushed him into Kuvira’s arms as he sought purpose outside their influence. Huan, while eccentric, seems content to remain within Zaofu, and Wing and Wei, despite their mischievous streak, are still deeply tied to their mother, almost functioning as extensions of Su rather than striking out entirely on their own.

Opal, though, is different. Like Toph once was, Opal yearns for freedom—she loves her family but also wants to leave Zaofu and forge her own path. She didn’t stay behind in her mother’s city or bend to its structure; instead, she joined the Air Nation, embracing a life of travel and purpose beyond her Beifong name. And it’s important to remember that Toph sees everything through the spirit vines—she knows, even from a distance, that Opal longed to be "away." Even if they hadn’t seen each other since Opal was a little girl, Toph would have been aware of her struggles, frustrations, and desire to break free.

Bolin: "You know what? Maybe I am scared. But what about you? I know that you want to go to the Northern Air Temple to train with Tenzin, but you haven't done it, because you're afraid too!" Opal: "You know what? You're right. I don't want to leave my family and disappoint my mom."

This idea of independence is also why I think Toph identified with and got along better with Suyin than with Lin, despite Su arguably being more of a “problem child” in her youth. Toph has always valued freedom above all else—she ran away from her overbearing parents, rejected traditional roles, and carved out her own life on her own terms. Suyin, in her own way, did the same thing. She made mistakes but ultimately escaped Toph’s shadow and built a life for herself. Toph understands and respects that kind of independence, which is likely why she forgave and reconnected with Suyin much more quickly than she ever did with Lin.

It probably doesn’t hurt that the two Beifongs Toph gets along with most—Suyin and Opal—are the ones who finally broke the family’s cycle. Toph rejected her parents’ control but ended up raising her own kids with a whole new set of issues. Lin became the dutiful, law-abiding daughter, much like her grandparents, while Su rebelled just like Toph. Then there’s Opal—a Beifong who found balance. She didn’t have to fight against her family or live up to its legacy; she chose her path because it was what she wanted.

Beifong family headcanons bc why not:

- Su taught Baatar how to dance. He realized how much she liked to dance and all he could do was a waltz, so one day he asked her what her fav dances were and to teach him so they could dance together. It took a while, but eventually he got there, Su loved every second of it

- Huan, despite being artistically inclined, cannot draw. He tried really hard but it always looks like it was drawn by a middle schooler. He’s also really into music.

- Opal always wished she had a sister and after Kurvira arrived she thought she finally got one, only to realize that she was the exact opposite of Opal and would rather hang out with her brothers. So, whenever she wanted to have a tea party she roped Wei and Wing into it, claiming that since she was their big sister they had to do what she said. (little did she know that they actually enjoyed it)

- Most people can’t differentiate between the twins and they’ve used it to their advantage several times. Suyin only knows about four times that they’ve done this.

- Also I feel like Su is the type of person to sing in the shower and also having a relatively good voice, like she’s not bad but karaoke is the only time she’d get away with it.

- Whereas Lin has an amazing singing voice, but rarely uses it.

ALSO THIS CHARACTER WILL NOT BE WEARING THOSE TIGHT RED AIRBENDING SUITS (just no 😀), just pretend you have something else on and a glider or you can fly or something 😭

The world was collapsing around us, dust and ash swirling in an insane dance as we fought for our lives against Kuvira. The ground trembled violently, as if it were writhing in anguish beneath them. All I could think about is if Wing is okay, if he is injured or dead. My mind filled with horrific thoughts, but what if they came true? The first time I witnessed the force of that cannon, I felt horrified. 

Here we are, sprinting throughout Republic City, fighting that metal monstrosity head on. The fight left every road flooded with the wreckage of buildings, and the surrounding air was filled with gas, dust, and pandemonium. 

Korra launched rock missiles, and the other airbenders and I flew about Kuvira's robot like flies, hearing the giant's screeching attempts to hit us. Abruptly, the metal giant raised its hand and pointed the cannon straight toward Korra.

"Create a tornado and attack from the top! RIGHT NOW!" I quickly ordered. 

We all moved fast to get into position, whirling about and aiming at the giant's hand. 

We delivered our blow. When the monster lost its balance, the explosion destroyed the surrounding ground and its body fell onto a building. Laughing to myself, I quickly took off along with the others, watching as my brother Meelo disappear into the cloud of dust. I was about to tell him to get out until I realized it was Meelo. He can handle himself. 

The dust cloud disappeared and revealed the giant reaching to it's face to crush Meelo. He flew fast past us and in our direction. 

I saw the cannon pointed at us out of the corner of my eye. It was going to fire on my sister Jinora and me. I swiftly launched myself forward.

"JINORA, LOOK OUT!" I let out a scream and hurriedly moved forward to grab my sister.

Ikki and Meelo arrived to assist us as we began to descend. When the two of them realized they couldn't support our weight. I quickly grabbed the three of them before bending the air below us to form an air cushion and lowering us gently onto the hard pavement.

I hugged my siblings, not wanting to let go.  

"Are you three okay?" I asked, while clinging on.

"Yeah, don't worry Y/N we are," Ikki smiled in return. 

"Where's your boyfriend?" Meelo interrupted.

"I don't know." I heard my voice hurting, and my vision turned blurry. 

I looked up and watched a large chunk of a building fall upon the giant. Wait, Wing could be there.

"Jinora, bring them back to dad please. I'm going to go find my boyfriend." I instructed her, bending a tornado under me to hurry to Wing.

Behind me, I heard my siblings cheering me on. I chucked to myself. Seeing that the tornado wasn't moving fast enough, I propelled myself forward by bending the air below me. 

I hurried up to Korra as soon as I arrived. Taking hold of her and turning her to face me, I tried to figure out her feelings through her blue eyes.

"Korra, please tell me Wing is okay- where is he!?" I questioned as I recovered my breath from running so fast. 

Wing was attempting to knock down a structure. However, the cannon was then aimed at him. I understood the cannon was about to release. My heart was pounding and my stomach fell. And it let off a blast at that very instant. 

A violet ray of light blasted out. I couldn't tell if the beam struck Wing or his rope. No. NO. Please be fine, please be fine. 

A few seconds later, a figure in green and gray falls from the sky. Wing.

I leapt into action. I used my bending to launch myself to Wing. My body crashed against his, the impact sending shockwaves through my system as I wrapped my arms around him. We rolled along the ground.

Now that Wing is in my arms, he is safe. I lifted him up and allowed him to steady himself with my arms. I touched his face to see if there were injuries.

“Wing, are you okay? Are you hurt? We have to ge-”

Wing's fingertips found my chin, luring me into a gentle kiss. His hands traveled down to my waist and mine moved down to his chest. Wing's lips were soft and warm against mine, his hands tightened around my waist out of protectiveness. Even though we've kissed before, it always feels like our first. Our breathing synchronized, both of us clearly reluctant to let go. I felt the blast's scorching wind, knowing that we would die if we stayed any longer, but I didn't really care.

He softened his features and grinned a little as we both released our grips and stared into each other's eyes. His smile, his olive green eyes, my sweet Wing... He would have left me.

"Yeah, I'm alright, sweet pea."

"Are you sure? Nothing's hurt?

"Yes, my dear... You know you're adorable when you're worried. How your eyebrows knit together and how your eyes soften. I should get hurt more often." 

When he proposed the idea, he grinned. I felt a slight heat on my face. I'm not sure if it was his gorgeous smile or the fact that he thought I was cute.

"Wing, please don't." I answered.

With a smile on his face, he threw up his hands. I couldn't resist grinning as well. This man.

His hands gripped mine.

"Now we gotta go before that thing blasts another beam at us." He states, looking at the metal giant.

"Oh right, right, right, lets go." I reply

“ Just give me true love and understanding for the rest of my days.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “The Kyoshi warriors are there to help out people who need it.” the female's voice sounded distance. “Your gran–gran Suki was the best warrior out there and I'm sure you will be a great leader to the new generation of warriors just like her.”

You hands played with your set of fans while sighing. Even after so many years, you still had your mother's comment rounding your mind every now and then.

She was the daughter of Sokka and Suki, born a waterbender, she was never forced to follow her mother's path nor her father's career, but after Suki's passing she decided to keep her legacy alive as much as she could before her own descendants could. Your mother always wanted to have children, but had the bad luck to have a hard time conceiving, so she decided that it would be best to adopt. She would have the child she always wanted and would give one a family.

She had always said how it was an instant connection when you two first met. Seeing a little you coloring on a book with such concentration and determination made her heart warm and after that it was history.

You didn’t know by that time that you were an earthbender, but your green eyes had told on you to be from the Earth Kingdom, your mother said how –even if you weren't blood family– she could see Suki on you, it was almost like she came back to live. And so you were taught the Kyoshi warriors culture, she made sure to let you know how if you didn’t want to follow with it that would be okay, but you always said how you will continue the legacy. That was what you've been doing all this years.

You've been living in the Kyoshi island since reaching your teenage years and only after your training with them finished and finally named a warrior you were able to come and go from the island as you wish. In one of those trips, you met Wing.

The Kyoshi warriors were split and sent to recognition of the most important points of the Earth Kingdom first and your group was sent to Zaofu. When you arrived the matriarch received all of you with open arms and such a sweet aura that made you feel welcomed, Suyin said how excited she was to finally meet the Kyoshi warriors after hearing stories about them when she was younger and showed everyone around.

At your arrival to what it seemed to be a training area with big metal pieces, you could spot two boys, twins to be specific. While you were looking around that area and Suyin was explaining what it was, green eyes were set on you with a special brightness in them; Wing felt as if he was just struck by an arrow when he saw you giggle at a joke made by his mother.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “Think fast!” Wei screamed throwing the disk at him, he was too distracted and got hit with the object at the side of his face. With a loud groan he felt sat on the floor. “My spirits, you are an idiot.”

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “Boys!” the older woman exclaimed terrorize by the sudden accident.

Everyone was quick to get closer to them, you had tell that you'd check on the hurt twin since you knew about first-aid. “Hey, are you okay? Can you hear me well?” you asked after crouching in front of him.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “I think the disk made him stupid.” the other twin said laughing when Wing took too long to answer clearly distracted by you, his mother hit him in the shoulder.

At first he was mumbling a little bit at your sight that made you frown. “Pretty... I mean! Yeah, I can hear you!” Wei exploded in laughter and you could feel your face warmer.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “That's great,” you made sure he was seeing well by asking him to tell you the amount of fingers you were holding. “Can you tell me what your full name is?” your hands touched the skin in his face looking for any wound open.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “Wing... Wing Beifong.” he answered feeling tickles in each spot your fingers were touching. “What's yours?” you smiled and presented yourself, he made sure to burn your name in his brain.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “What day are we in, Wing?” he answered with the date, feeling his heart skip a beat at how his name sounded on your voice. “Okay, I'm sure you're fine, just don't take any naps right now for precaution.”

Suyin sighed and took her other twin's ear. “You and I will talk about your way of playing.” you looked at the exchange with a smile and when you turned back to Wing, he was still staring at you with such curiosity.

And after that interaction, Wing was obsessed. He loved the way your touch felt on his skin, how sweet his name sounded on your voice, how your green eyes had this cute brightness on them that made them shine like they were a pair of the most beautiful emeralds, how your Kyoshi make-up looked so good on you and made your eyes the center of attention.

Wing looked for you in any chance he had, always bringing you gifts, taking you on small walks on the city, asking you on spontaneous dates which you gladly accepted to ever single one of them and after some time on the city, the warriors needed to visit a different one so Wing took the opportunity to ask you out formally a day before leaving.

A couple of years had gone by since that, sometimes you would visit the family on Zaofu or he would meet you at Republic City, the relationship was just great.

When the whole Kuvira situation took flight, you made sure to be by your boyfriend's side as much as you were allowed too and when it ended, you had an idea.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “You want us to visit the Kyoshi island?” he asked carefully, making you nod with a little of slowness.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “I thought... Uhm, since this whole thing took a toll on everyone that... Maybe you can come to the island and have tiny vacations... Just if you want! I'm not pressuring you to anything! If you don't want that's okay.” you talked a little too fast for his liking, but he smiled with such calm before cupping your face in his palms.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “We would love to, my love.” he answered giving you a tiny peck on the lips.

Another thing he loved from you was your personality. Even if when you were fighting people you looked intimidating, at any calm interaction with new people, you would almost make yourself smaller. He knew after your third date how you didn’t like being in such places with large groups of people and he made sure to take you to places were you felt comfortable. When he introduced you to his family formally, he answered every single question for you and the way how he always was thinking of you and your well-being made you fell more in love with him... If that was even possible.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “We are!?” an excited Opal asked at the dinner table, a big smile on her face.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “I asked for permission and was granted,” you nodded. “It's a little vacation trip I want you to have to relax and also as a thank you for teaching me how to metalbend.” your voice got lower at the last part, a little bit withdrawn, your face started to feel warm.

Your boyfriend took your hand in his, smiling. “Nonsense, darling, you were already a natural when you came here!” Suyin exclaimed. “We just helped you activate your potential.”

Plans were made and not even a week later, the whole Beifong family was at the entrance of the Kyoshi island, looking around amazed by it. Even after all those years, the island was restricted to just the people on the village and the warriors, so almost no one in the modern age knew how it looked.

You had asked one of your teammates to do the tour for you and after that, a small welcome dinner was held.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “Uh, sorry–.” you tried to speak to get their attention, Wing made a gesture that he would handle it.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “Family!” he exclaimed loud enough for them to stop talking, once in silence, he smiled. “Thank you, you can go now.” the last part he said your way.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “Hi, sorry, I would like to thank you all for accepting my invitation here.” your fingers were drumming slightly on your side after standing up. “It really means a lot to me to have all of you here, I appreciate you for taking me in as one of your own and... I hope you enjoy the island.” a nervous smile took place on your face.

After that the whole family burst in cheerings clapping at you and smiling with such fond aura. Wing got closer to you after sitting down. “That was sweet, honey, I love you.” he said, a soft kiss was exchanged between you two.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍‍ “Ugh, that's disgusting! We're eating!” Wei exclaimed in a jokingly way, throwing pieces of bread at his brother.

im thinking angsty Kuvira thoughts

some of it is canon, some is not

Since Vira became a big character in my fic, ive been thinking about her a lot and her story is already sad but my brain makes it even worse.

So I feel like all Kuvira wanted from Suyin was to be loved by her, just like she saw her love the rest of her children. She started creating the Earth Empire only to try to prove to her that she could do something meaningfull. She got eaten up by all that power in the end but at the same time, she felt she wouldn't do well enough if she didn't finish "uniting" the Earth Kingdom.

Because nobody ever made Kuvira feel like she was good enough.

Suyin's kids didn't consider her their sister;

Su didn't quite treat her like her daughter;

Toph took some interest with her when she saw her being a talented bender but at some point just dissapeared;

Her parents just left her in Zaofu and she never heard from them again;

Just think about how traumatized she was. She wanted a family, parents, somebody to take care of her when she wad a child but nobody did that. What proves it more is the fact that she got with Baatar Jr. Like, IF THEY CONSIDERED EACH OTHER SIBLINGS THAT WOULD NOT HAPPEN (im still angry at bryke that it happened, tho)

And then, Korra gave her a chance to redeem herself, to prove she only wanted to do good. Even then she was the type to get to the goal no matter what but Suyin kept her from doing stupid shit that would have bad concequences later. She also listened to Su pretty easily, she still trusted her after all that happened. She was so happy when Suyin offered to take her back home, too.

I think that being in Zaofu would still be hard for her. She'd train with Wing and Wei, spend some time with Baatar Sr. but it wouldn't be enough. It still wouldn't feel like home because her relationship with the Beifong family was still fucked up.

The guilt kept eating at her because she almost killed them all yet they still managed to be kind to her. Not to mention that if she hurt Wing or Wei by accident she'd go into full panic mode because she was afraid to hurt any one of them ever again.

Idk, she's a really sad character and I can't keep my mind off of it.
