Industrial Garnet Market Insights: Size, Share, and Growth Factors
Industrial Garnet: A Versatile Abrasive Mineral Garnet is an industrial mineral that plays a vital role in numerous manufacturing processes and consumer products. Though not as well-known as other gemstones, garnet has become indispensable in several modern industries due to its unique hardness and abrasive properties. Let's explore the many uses of garnet in greater detail. What is Garnet? Garnet refers to a group of silicate minerals that form in various crystalline structures. The three most common garnet varieties used industrially are almandine, spessartine, and pyrope. Garnet forms within metamorphic and igneous rocks under conditions of high temperature and pressure deep within the earth's crust. Major garnet deposits exist worldwide, with top producers including India, South Africa, and the United States. The defining attribute of garnet is its hardness of 6.5-7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, which falls between quartz and topaz. This considerable hardness combined with its angular crystal structure makes garnet highly effective for grinding, blasting, water-jet cutting and other abrasive applications. Garnet's durability and chemical inertness further contribute to its versatility across industries. Applications in Abrasives Given garnet's hardness and durability, it sees widespread use as an abrasive material. Garnet accounts for over 90% of all industrial abrasives and over half of all mined garnet is processed for use in abrasives. - Abrasive Blasting: Garnet is the preferred mineral for abrasive blasting due to its sharp edges that efficiently remove paint, rust, and coatings from surfaces. It is used to prepare surfaces for painting or coating, clean industrial garnet equipment, shape stone and ceramic materials, and more. - Abrasive Powders: Crushed garnet is produced in precise mesh sizes for use in abrasive powders for sanding, grinding, cutting and polishing of metal, stone, wood and other hard materials. Its sharp crystals provide an optimum cutting effect. - Waterjet Cutting: Finely pulverized garnet is forced through ultra-high pressure water jets to precisely cut even very hard substances like titanium or composites. Due to garnet's durability, it produces long-lasting waterjets. - Abrasive Wheels: Bonded wheels containing garnet grit are used for cutoff and grinding of concrete, masonry as well as ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Garnet wheels ensure precise shaping and surface finishes. - Abrasive Paper/Cloth: Manufactured abrasive papers and cloths containing garnet are used for stock removal, polishing and deburring applications. Garnet's consistent grit helps produce scratch-free results. Industrial Filtration Garnet plays an important role in filtration processes across many industries: - Water Filtration: Its durable angular crystals serve as effective filters for municipal and industrial water treatment plants to remove particles and impurities from raw water sources. - Oil and Gas Filtration: Garnet filters protect sensitive drilling and pumping machinery from sediments and debris in oil/gas pipelines and reservoirs. It withstands high pressures and temperatures. - Food and Beverage Filtration: Finely ground garnet is used in cross-flow filtration systems to filter beer, wine, juices and other liquids to clarity without altering flavors. - Pharmaceutical Filtration: Its chemical inertness makes garnet suitable for precise micron-rated filtering of medical injections, vaccines and other pharmaceutical products. - Foundry Filtration: Garnet effectively filters slurries and removes inclusions from molten metals to improve cast part quality in foundries. Thanks to its hardness, precise sizing, and chemical stability, garnet remains the top choice mineral for critical filtration applications. Its reusability further adds to overall cost-effectiveness.

Australia at risk of 'economic coercion'
1. Foreign Direct Investment to Australia (FDI)
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is advantaging the economy of Australia. FDI not only helped Australia enhance existing industries, but it was also providing capital to finance new industries. FDI brings in new business with connections in different markets, which opens up exporting opportunities and increases the employment rate. FDI helps Australia to boost its infrastructure as the higher growth supported by FDI pays dividends for Australians, which increase the tax revenues for federal and state government to spend on infrastructure like hospitals, schools, roads, and other essential services with the increased funds. FDI also encourages competition in the Australian market which can increase business innovation by bringing new technologies and services (The Benefits of Foreign Investment, n.d.). In contrast, FDI also brings disadvantages to Australia. Australia has experienced unexpected inflation increases with more foreign firms investing (Faeth, 2010, p. 147). It will cause reducing in purchasing power of some Australians due to uneven prices rising and distorting purchasing power for recipients and payers of fixed interest rates over time. (Oner, 2022). Malaysia and Australia Free Trade Agreement (MAFTA) help Australian to export goods to the Malaysia market more accessible, for example, Australia has the opportunity to ship their agricultural product to capitalize on the demand of Malaysian which bring money into the Australian economy (Five Benefits of MAFTA, 2019).
2. Emerging International Trade Trends
2.1 Import Trends
Figure 2: Total Import of Australia
In January 2023, the total imports of Australia grew by 20.9%, which shows an increase of 10.8% compared to the previous month and recorded 26.7 billion USD (CEICdata.com, 2018). Machinery and transport equipment are Australia's main imports, holding 40% of total imports, followed by road vehicles, which represent 12%. Australia also imports petroleum, manufactured goods, chemicals, and related products. Australia's main import partners include China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Germany, and Malaysia. Among these countries, China holds Australia's most significant import, representing 23% of total Australian imports (TRADING ECONOMICS, n.d.). The top item Australia imports from China is electrical and electronic equipment, valued at $16.22 Billion in 2022. Australia's imports from China had a total value was $83.73 billion in 2022 (TRADING ECONOMICS, n.d.). The advantage of importing is to get good quality products by importing high-quality products from the originated sources. There is also a currency risk for Australia to import too much from other countries. It will cause the Australian currency rate drops in the international market, and other countries will load it over (Overseas, 2020).
2.2 Export Trend
Figure 3: Total Export of Australia
Total export in Australia reached 12.5% in January 2023, which is an increase of 21.4% compared to the previous month ((CEICdata.com, 2018). Iron Ore, Coal Briquettes, Petroleum Gas, Gold, and Wheat are the top exports of Australia, and Australia mainly export to China which represent 40.3% of total export followed by Japan (13.7%), South Korea (8.58%), India (5.99%) and Chinese Taipei (3.86%). Australia has become the world’s biggest exporter of Iron Ore, which will value $118 billion in 2021(Observatory of Economic Complexity, 2022). Australia is the fifth more prominent wine exporter in the world. There are over 18000 different wines exported from Australia to more than 100 destinations worldwide (Australian Trade and Investment Commission, n.d.). Exporting wine, and has increased profits in Australia from new sales channels as exporting is giving opportunities for exporters and winemakers to look to new markets for generating more profit. On the other side, it needs additional costs for shipping, and there are many additional costs to be considered for exporters, from manufacturing to documentation, administration, expenses, distribution, risk management, and marketing (Understand the Benefits and Risks of Exporting Wine, n.d.).
3. Social-Political Issue
youtube
Based on the newspaper article 11 points out that Australia lacks trade diversity and is an overreliance on China. This has led to socio-political issues in Australia, which contribute to the low income of the producers and exporters. Due to Australia’s position on an independent international Covid-19 inquiry, China has applied sanctions on Australia. The Chinese government used trade as a politically sanctioned weapon against Australia by blocking the import of wine, barley, cotton, copper, coal, sugar, and lobsters from Australia. This shows that overreliance on China has brought Australia a severe risk in the economy significantly decreasing the income of the producers and exporters. There is a noticeable drop in revenues in Australian wine and lobster exports. Before 2019, in Australia, more than 40% of all wine export was exported to China, but it is now fallen near to zero exporting Australia wine to China (Wilson, 2020).
Moreover, the export sales of lobsters also fell as China used to occupy 96% of the total export sales of Australian lobsters. It affects the income of fishermen and wine producers as the demand has decreased. Before China Australian trade restriction, Australian fishermen could sell per kilogram of lobster for around 80 dollars, but because of the trade restriction, the price of lobster dropped, and the value of lobster worth 25 dollars per kilogram or even worse. Beef and barley industries also occurred similar situations (Winners and Losers: The Real Consequences of the China-Australia Trade War, 2021). Therefore, overreliance on China in exporting has imperiled Australia's economy and caused a decrease in the income of the producers and exporters.
4. Negative Implication of low income
Figure 4: Negative Implication
The low income of the producers and exporters is impacting their living conditions and health condition as they are limited in access to basic needs such as food, housing, and healthcare. Low-income people are suffering from financial stress as they struggle to make ends meet and pay bills. Therefore, the rates of tobacco and alcohol use increase among people with the pressure of living on a low income, increasing the risk of health problems (Cunningham, 2018). Additionally, low-income families in Australia have difficulty with food security typically, which cannot afford satisfactory qualities of food. This led to health issues as they cannot get enough nutrition to maintain good health (Rosier, 2011). Instead of physical health, lower incomes also affect mental health. Lower-income people have less access to health-promoting goods and services and cannot maintain control or security over their lives (Isaacs, Enticott, Meadows & Inder, 2018 p. 2). Australia has high distress among low-income people, which is around 1 in 10 individuals, over one-fifth of Australians (Isaacs, Enticott, Meadows & Inder, 2018 p. 1). Low-income people also have a problem in difficulty sleeping (Cunningham, 2018).
Moreover, low-income communities will cause increasing government expenditures as Australian low-income individuals may need to rely on government assistance programs. Low-income households are especially at an expanded hazard of encountering budgetary lodging push. Therefore, Australia has provided housing assistance to low-income families to improve their quality of life (Housing assistance in Australia, Housing assistance, n.d.). This has to increase Australian government expenditures as the government has to spend cots on maintaining and providing public housing including the cost of construction of housing units, maintenance fees, and management cost. The Australian government expects to spend around $8.4 billion to help low-income communities with housing problems as the Australian government is responsible for improving the life quality of low-income communities (Housing | Department of Social Services, Australian Government, n.d.).
5. Export Diversification Policy
Figure 5: Export Diversification Policy
Australia should implement Trade diversification of Australian exports to gain new opportunities in Australia's emerging markets. Australia's trade is currently focused on four critical needs, which are China, Japan, the United States, and South Korea, especially China is its biggest trading partner of Australia (Varrall et al., 2020). However, Australia needs to create more chances for Australian exporter to reach new market and export diversity. Australia can export their product diversly such as export welding machines to Africa, beauty products to Mexico, shipping wine to Jamaica, and mining services to Peru (Trade diversification of Australian exports, n.d.). By export diversity, and it helps Australia to diminish an economy's powerlessness to adverse external shocks (Hong, 2021, p. 2).
Moreover, Australia can move its export trade into the Indian market. As India has a large population (1.408 billion), which is slightly less than China, India is fast growing in economy, which sustains by a youthful, optimistic, and tech-smart consumer base. In the long term, Indian urbanization will raise the livelihoods and mechanical movement needs huge demand in numerous segments (Go west – the case for moving into the Indian market, n.d.). Australia has opened the lithium-ion battery market to India. Australia plans to export lithium to India to look to diversity away from a single marker as Australia only used to export lithium to China (Koshy, 2023).
youtube
Australia can refer to Canada as Canada is a great example which export diversification. Fifteen free trade agreements Canada has signed with 49 countries, including CUSMA, CPTPP, and CETA. Canada has invested in 36 foreign investment and protection agreements (FIPAs) to broaden overseas exports, and there are still many negotiations in progress around the globe for Canada to reach more countries (Canada, 2018). However, Canada is not only export to diversity destination, but it also exports product diversity. Canada exports coal, iron, copper ore, wood, canola, cereals, and fish which value at least $1 billion in export these products. It also exports aircraft, mineral fuels, precious metals, machinery, and pharmaceuticals. The export diversification strategy helps Canada to avoid uncertainties and reduce potential disruptions that Canada may face in future international trade (Canada, 2022). Therefore, Australia can learn from Canada to stable the economy from Chinese government sanction.

Economic survey of Italy
Following World War II, the Italian economy was among the poorest in all of Europe. Today, it is among the strongest. The nation's diverse industrial base is mostly fueled by the production of high-end consumer goods. Its metallurgical and engineering sectors are its strong suits, while a lack of raw resources and energy sources are its limitations. Today, it is the world's ninth-largest economy and Europe's third largest economy. The nation is a major exporter of rice, tomatoes, and wine and a leader in the production of olive oil worldwide. In this paper, we are going to take a look at some of the major macroeconomic variables that play a major role in the economy of the country. In the graphs that will be seen below , the years will be in descending order starting from 2021 and going back to 2012. So the data shown will be for a time period of 10 years.
GDP GROWTH RATE
According to the International Monetary Fund, Gross Domestic Product is used to measure the monetary value of final goods and services produced in a country during a given period of time. It accounts for all the output produced inside a nation's boundaries. GDP is made up of products and services generated for market consumption as well as certain nonmarket production, including government-provided defense or educational services.
The Covid-19 Pandemic forced the world into a lockdown so as to curb the spread of infections. As a result production within the economy stopped and so obviously the GDP did fall to new levels in many economies. The same happened to Italy. The Italian economy shrank by more than previously thought during the second quarter as a result of lockdown restrictions imposed to curb the coronavirus pandemic. The Covid-19 pandemic significantly affected the Italian economy, with GDP declining by 8.9% in 2020. The global financial crisis and the sovereign debt crisis both caused successive shocks, and employment and investment levels were yet to fully recover. Despite modest growth up to 2008, per capita incomes have stayed below 2,000 levels for the past 11 years.
An sudden decline in GDP in April 2020, which led to a GDP contraction of 8.9% in 2020—one of the worst in the OECD—reflected the severity of the first and subsequent lockdowns. This was caused in part by the structure of the Italian GDP: Compared to other major European nations, the economy of this country is dominated by contact-intensive services.
About 6% of the GDP is directly attributable to tourism, while 13% is indirect. Similar to the majority of OECD members, 42% of domestic activity is accounted for by foreign tourism. Activity decreased in all COVID-related industries, including those that were less severely limited.
By year's end, the Italian economy had recovered the majority of the output losses brought on by the pandemic, growing by 6.5% in 2021. However, prolonged supply problems and dramatically rising energy prices cast a shadow over the near-term picture. In particular, consumer services, declining purchasing power and waning consumer confidence are anticipated to restrain real GDP growth in the near future.
EXPRTS OF GOODS AND SERVICES
The value of all goods and other market services offered to the rest of the world is represented by exports of goods and services. They consist of the cost of goods, freight, insurance, transportation, travel, royalties, licence fees, and other services like government, financial, informational, communication, construction, and other related fields. They do not include transfer payments, investment income (formerly known as factor services), or employee remuneration.
The graph shows a gradual increase in the amount Italy exports from the year of 2012 to 2019 up until the time of the pandemic when the exports fell. Italy exports by the end of 2020 was$558.92B, a 12.07% decline from 2019 . Italy exported a total of €454.7 billion. Metals and metal products (13%), and precision machinery (18%), are Italy's two top exports. It is also a well-known exporter of automobiles, textiles, and footwear. Regarding exports, Italy is ranked tenth in the world. In comparison to 2019, exports decreased by roughly 7.3% in 2020 (€421.8 billion in July) as a result of the pandemic. Consumer goods, which include both durables and non-durables, were negatively impacted (-3.8%). Additionally severely impacted were capital goods (-5.4%) and intermediate products (-9.8%). Italy's biggest commercial partners, the UK (-9.5%), Germany (-5.3%), France (-6.1%), and the US (-5.4%) saw a fall in exports.
GNI GROWTH RATE
Gross National Income (GNI) is the sum of all the money that a country's citizens and enterprises have made. It is used to gauge and chart a country's wealth through time. As a measure of wealth, gross national income (GNI) is an alternative to gross domestic product (GDP). In place of output, income is calculated. GNI measures the overall revenue that a country's citizens and businesses have generated, including investment income, regardless of where that income was generated. It also includes funds obtained from overseas, such as grants for economic growth and international investments.
Italy's GNI growth rate has been averaging around 1% annually in recent years, which is comparatively slow. The nation's GNI growth rate has been impacted by economic difficulties such high levels of debt, sluggish economic growth, and high unemployment. However, due to governmental changes and economic measures intended to spur growth, the rate has been gradually improving in recent years. The broad lockdowns and limitations implemented to stop the virus's transmission resulted in a substantial reduction in economic activity, which decreased the nation's GNI.The epidemic particularly hard-hit Italy's service sector, which makes up a substantial share of the country's economic activity. Reduced consumer spending, business closures, and interruptions to global supply systems all contributed to a decline in the GNI during the year of 2020. The pandemic had a devastating effect on the nation's tourism industry, which is a vital source of income. Many tourists postponed their travel plans. As a result, there was a deficiency in the amount of foreign currency entering the economy. Structural reforms such as labour market reforms, pension reforms have helped boost growth, investments in public infrastructure has provided economic activity to the people resulting in flow of cash within the economy and tax cuts especially for business to enopurage investment are some of the measures the government took that has helped increase the GNI of the country .
INFLATION GDP DEFLATOR
The increase A gauge of an economy's price level and how it has changed over time is the GDP deflator. It is measured as the difference between nominal GDP and real GDP, which represents the value of goods and services generated in an economy at current prices (the value of goods and services produced in an economy valued at constant prices).
In recent years, the inflation GDP deflator in Italy has been between 1 and 2 percent annually. However, a number of variables, including monetary policy, global commodity prices, and shifts in consumer behaviour, have an impact on the rate of inflation. Due to disruptions in the supply chain and changes in consumer spending habits, the COVID-19 pandemic has also had an impact on Italy's inflation rate.
The Italian government's response to the epidemic, which included monetary policy changes and fiscal stimulus measures, has also helped to lower inflation. Prices have decreased, and the GDP deflator has decreased as a result of the government's attempts to support the economy and the pandemic's effects on demand and supply.
CONSUMER PRICE INDEX
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) tracks variations in the cost of a variety of household-consumed goods and services.
The CPI in Italy has an increasing overall trend from 2012 to 2021, while there were notable variations in the rate of increase. The Italian CPI's annual growth rate was generally consistent from 2012 to 2016, averaging between 1% and 2%. The pace of rise rose to roughly 1.5% to 2% in 2017 and 2018.The COVID-19 epidemic and the global economic recession, however, had an adverse effect on the Italian economy in 2019 and 2020, which decreased consumer spending and, in turn, the rate at which the CPI increased. The Italian CPI increased at an annual rate of -0.2% in 2020.The rate of growth in the Italian CPI improved to 1.3% in 2021 as consumer spending increased and the economy began to recover from the pandemic.
Life Expectancy AT BIRTH
Based on current age-specific death rates, life expectancy is the average number of years a person can anticipate to live. From 2012 to 2021, Italy's life expectancy increased on average.
The life expectancy in Italy grew from from 82 years to 83 years between 2012 and 2016. In 2017 and 2018, this trend persisted, and the average age of death rose to about 83 years. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted Italy's life expectancy in 2019 and 2020, resulting in a brief drop in life expectancy as a result of higher mortality rates.
Italy's life expectancy started to rise in 2021 as vaccination rates increased and COVID-19 cases and deaths dropped. Preliminary data indicate that life expectancy may perhaps have increased somewhat from the previous year. Overall, Italy's life expectancy has increased over the years as a result of advancements in healthcare and medical technology. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has briefly lowered Italy's life expectancy, highlighting the need of responding to public health emergencies to protect and improve population health.
